Coordination chemistry in fused-salt solutions

Spectrophotometric work on structural determinations with fused-salt solutions is reviewed. Constraints placed on the method, as well as interpretation of the spectra, are discussed with parallels drawn to aqueous spectrophotometric curves of the same materials.

An application of artificial intelligence to the interpretation of mass spectra.

Description of the DENDRAL (Dendritic Algorithm) project, the objectives of which were to base the computer program on an alogorithm that generates an exhaustive, nonredundant list of all the structural isomers of a given chemical composition, and to devise a computer program that would perform an organic structure determination, given a molecular formula and a mass spectrum. This program is called 'Heuristic DENDRAL' and it operates by using the known structure/spectrum correlations to constrain the DENDRAL isomer generator to produce a single isomer for that composition. The collaboration of chemists and computer scientists has produced a tool of some practical utility from the chemical viewpoint, and an interesting program from the viewpoint of artificial intelligence.

Evaluation of optimal control type models for the human gunner in an Anti-Aircraft Artillery (AAA) system

The selection of the structure of optimal control type models for the human gunner in an anti aircraft artillery system is considered. Several structures within the LQG framework may be formulated. Two basic types are considered: (1) kth derivative controllers; and (2) proportional integral derivative (P-I-D) controllers. It is shown that a suitable criterion for model structure determination can be based on the ensemble statistics of the tracking error. In the case when the ensemble tracking steady state error is zero, it is suggested that a P-I-D controller formulation be used in preference to the kth derivative controller.

Search for solid conductors of Na/+/ and K/+/ ions - Five new conductors

Five new conductors of positive Na and K ions, for use as separators in high energy secondary batteries, have been discovered. They include: (1) the pyrochlores NaTaWO6 and NaTa2O5F; (2) the bcc form of NaSbO3; and (3) the niobates 2Na2O-3Nb2O5 and 2K2O-3Nb2O5, with the alkali ions probably in open layers of the completely determined structure. On the basis of approximately 40 structure types, generalizations have been made regarding the relation between structure and ionic transport.

Effects of fragments

Methods used to determine structural damage caused by fragments from accidental explosions are outlined. Structures considered include launch facilities for liquid propellant rockets and metal plates and sheets. Penetrating and nonpenetrating fragments were considered.

Vehicle Steering control: A model of learning

A hierarchy of strategies were postulated to describe the process of learning steering control. Vehicle motion and steering control data were recorded for twelve novices who drove an instrumented car twice a week during and after a driver training course. Car-driver describing functions were calculated, the probable control structure determined, and the driver-alone transfer function modelled. The data suggested that the largest changes in steering control with learning were in the way the driver used the lateral position cue.

Configurational and system requirements for control of large space systems

Control of large space systems, modeling, and control difficulties are discussed. Ground based analysis of spaceflight data are presented to determine structural dynamics characteristics for the purpose of revising control laws, and to trim the surface contour. Systems identification for adaptive control and automatic surface control are also considered.

The use of frequency methods in rotorcraft system identification

A new approach to model structure determination is examined. Flight data from the Rotor Systems Research Aircraft (RSRA) are transformed into the frequency domain and truncated to provide band limiting. The stepwise regression technique is then used to identify a quasistatic state-space model from the transformed data. The data processing requirements for both time domain and frequency domain identification are discussed and the results of the two techniques are compared.

Materials for high-temperature thermoelectric conversion

High boron materials of high efficiency for thermoelectric power generation and capable of prolonged operation at temperatures over 1200 C are discussed. Background theoretical studies indicated that the low carrier mobility of materials with beta boron and related structures is probably associated with the high density of traps. Experimental work was mainly concerned with silicon borides in view of promising data from European laboratories. A systematic study using structure determination and lattice constant measurements failed to confirm the existence of an SiBn phase. Only SiB6 and a solid solution of silicon in beta boron with a maximum solid solubility of 5.5-6 at % at 1650 C were found.
