Interaction effects between solar wind and comet Bennett

Observations of the solar wind and the comet Bennett made during the period from Mar. 23 to Apr. 5, 1970 are considered. During this period the position of the comet had been comparatively close to earth at a distance of about 0.7 AU. Plasma data from four space probes and photographs of a number of observatories are taken into account. The relation between a sudden change in the velocity of the solar wind and the occurrence of a pronounced disturbance in the cometary tail is investigated.

Effects of turbulence in a planetary atmosphere on radio occultation

A formulation is given for the correlation functions for the log-amplitude and phase fluctuations of both spherical and plane waves propagating in a turbulent medium whose correlation function for refractive index fluctuations is described by the product of a function of the average coordinate and a function of the difference coordinate. The results are applied to radio occultation of a flyby space probe by the atmosphere of Venus, assuming that the turbulence in the atmosphere exists as a layer, that it is localized, isotropic, and smoothly varying, and that the localized turbulence is described by the Kolmogorov spectrum. Closed-form solutions for both variances and frequency spectra of the log-amplitude and phase fluctuations are obtained using Rytov's method, and it is seen that the shape of the frequency spectra depends greatly on the characteristics and extent of the turbulence.

Theory for the effects of turbulence in a planetary atmosphere on radio occultation

Rytov's method is used to formulate the correlation functions for log-amplitude and phase fluctuations for both spherical and plane wave propagation in a turbulent medium whose correlation function for refractive index fluctuations is described by the product of a function of the average coordinate and a function of the difference coordinate. The results are applied to the study of radio occultation effects due to the atmosphere of Venus in the case of a flyby space probe. It is assumed that turbulence of isotropic and smoothly varying characteristics occurs in the Venusian atmosphere.

Reflecting heat shields made of microstructured fused silica

Heat sheidls constructed from selected monodisperse distributions of high-purity fused-silica particles are efficient reflectors of visible and near-UV radiation generated in shock-layer of space probe during atmospheric entry.

Determination of dynamic corrections to point coordinates of photographs obtained by the Zond 6 and Zond 8 spacecraft

The linear and angular motions of the Zond 6 and Zond 8 spacecraft imaging camera during the exposure cause displacements of the optical image points. In the case of instantaneous exposure of each individual point and the nonsimultaneous exposure of the complete frame, this leads to finite geometric shifts of the points without causing blurring of the photographic image. Therefore, when measuring the resulting photographic pictures, the problem arises of reducing the picture point positions to a common instant of time. This reduction is performed by means of dynamic corrections to the measured picture point coordinates. These corrections are found by using formulas of dynamic photogrammetry. Their use with the Zond space probe photographs is described.

Infrared remote sounding

Atmospheric radiation was measured as a function of wavelength, position, angle, and time. Radiation was determined by temperature, cloud (aerosol), composition, and surface emissivity measurements. The theory of radiative transfer is reviewed, along with retrieval methods. Instruments onboard space probes for infrared remote sounding of planetary atmospheres are also described.

X-ray and gamma-ray astronomy

Accomplishments in the fields of X-ray and gamma ray astronomy are discussed. Data obtained from IMP and OGO satellites are analyzed to determine the sources of interplanetary radiation bursts. The energy spectrum of cosmic gamma ray bursts as observed by IMP-6 is described. The application of cooling blackbody techniques as a method for examining cosmic gamma ray bursts is reported. The experimental results and theoretical interpretation of high energy diffuse gamma rays are investigated. The structure of the SAS-2 satellite is depicted and the accomplishments are examined. Other sources of gamma radiation to include galactic fermi, Cygnus X-1, supernovae, and the planet Jupiter are proposed. Data obtained from the Pioneer 10 space probe are presented in graph form.

The complex magnetic field of Jupiter

An analysis of the characteristics of the magnetic field of the planet Jupiter is presented. The data were obtained during the flight of Pioneer 11 space probe, using a high field triaxial fluxgate magnetometer. The data are analyzed in terms of traditional Schmitt normalized spherical harmonic expansion fitted to the observations in a least squares sense. Tables of data and graphs are provided to summarize the findings.

MARS as viewed by Mariner 9

Photographs of the surface of the planet Mars which were obtained by the Mariner 9 space probe are presented. Areas of investigation during the Mariner 9 flight involved television coverage, ultraviolet spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, infrared radiometry, S-band occultation, and celestial mechanics. Descriptions of the photographs are provided to further identify the surface features and the coordinates of the area photographed are included. Emphasis is placed on the visual evidence of the effects of wind in shaping the Martian surface. Photographs of cloud formations and dust storms are analyzed.

Goddard earth models (5 and 6)

A comprehensive earth model has been developed that consists of two complementary gravitational fields and center-of-mass locations for 134 tracking stations on the earth's surface. One gravitational field is derived solely from satellite tracking data. This data on 27 satellite orbits is the most extensive used for such a solution. A second solution uses this data with 13,400 simultaneous events from satellite camera observations and surface gravimetric anomalies. The satellite-only solution as a whole is accurate to about 4.5 milligals as judged by the surface gravity data. The majority of the station coordinates are accurate to better than 10 meters as judged by independent results from geodetic surveys and by Doppler tracking of both distant space probes and near earth orbits.
