Developing and Running Quantum Algorithms for Chemistry and Materials (QAChMat) (Final Technical Report)
The goal of the project is to design, develop, and execute new computational methods on practical quantum computing platforms to simulate hard problems in chemical and materials sciences. We exploited the two leading quantum computing platforms of trapped atomic ion and superconducting qubits, established in laboratories at Duke University and the University of Maryland, to discover new simulation and computational methods for the study of quantum chemistry and materials.
Flattop Free-Run [Slides]
Objectives: Awareness of the Flattop critical assembly design and intent; Obtain a working knowledge of how changes in reflector geometry can affect the criticality of a system; and, Observe the effects of temperature-dependent reactivity feedback.
LAW Glass Formulation to Support Melter Runs with Simulants
The major objective of this work was to prepare and characterize glass formulations in order to develop and select formulations that are compliant with contractual and processing requirements to support melter tests with each of the LAW Sub-Envelopes. Glasses that cover composition ranges of interest were prepared and characterized to ensure that selected glass compositions can tolerate expected composition variations resulting from process errors without adversely affecting processing characteristics or product quality. Glass compositions that are expected to result during transitions from one waste stream to another were also prepared and characterized. Other objectives of the work included preparation and characterization of glasses with respect to the properties of interest, optimization of sulfate loading in the glasses, evaluation of ability to achieve waste loading limits, testing to demonstrate compatibility of glass melts with melter materials of construction, and identification of glass formulation issues with respect to contract specifications and processing requirements.
Survey on Efficient and Productive Use of Electricity In Women-Run Small Businesses in Uganda
In Uganda, women make up a large portion of the service sector, notably in informal small and micro businesses such as retail shops, food preparation, tailoring, sewing, beer brewing, basket weaving, healthcare, and hairdressing. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), and USAID, in partnership with the Clean Energy Enthusiasts (CEE), a local implementer in Uganda, designed and conducted a participatory survey to collect baseline data and information on the current state of benefits to energy access. The study included data on the uptake of efficient and productive electric (EPUE) equipment, business skills, and financial needs among small and mid-size women-led businesses in Uganda. The objective of the survey was to build evidence and identify economic activities where access to electricity has a positive impact on women’s empowerment by helping them develop new and existing businesses, improve productivity, and increase their income. The survey included questions about the type of electric equipment used and needed, electric consumption patterns, alternative sources to electricity, and business and capital barriers related to increased access. The survey results provided the basis for designing a training program tailored to the need of women entrepreneurs in the region.
