A study of the utilization of ERTS-1 data from the Wabash River Basin

The author has identified the following significant results. The identification and area estimation of crops experiment tested the usefulness of ERTS data for crop survey and produced results indicating that crop statistics could be obtained from ERTS imagery. Soil association mapping results showed that strong relationships exist between ERTS data derived maps and conventional soil maps. Urban land use analysis experiment results indicate potential for accurate gross land use mapping. Water resources mapping demonstrated the feasibility of mapping water bodies using ERTS imagery.

Hydrofoil controls outfall effluents in rivers and oceans

System, which consists of vertical semispan hydrofoil anchored in water bed and set at angle of attack with respect to ambient water flow, works by keeping pollutants concentrated within long trailing vortex generated by hydrofoil and either deflecting vortex away from sensitive regions or sweeping it from side to side for rapid dispersion.

Land use/vegetation mapping in reservoir management. Merrimack River basin

This report consists of an analysis of: ERTS-1 Multispectral Scanner imagery obtained 10 August 1973; Skylab 3 S190A and S190B photography, track 29, taken 21 September 1973; and RB-57 high-altitude aircraft photography acquired 26 September 1973. These data products were acquired on three cloud-free days within a 47-day period. The objectives of this study were: (1) to make quantitative comparisons between high-altitude aircraft photography and satellite imagery, and (2) to demonstrate the extent to which high resolution (S190A and B) space-acquired data can be used for land use/vegetation mapping and management of drainage basins.

Use of the LANDSAT-2 Data Collection System in the Colorado River Basin Weather Modification Program

The author has identified the following significant results. The LANDSAT data collection system has proven itself to be a valuable tool for control of cloud seeding operations and for verification of weather forecasts. These platforms have proven to be reliable weather resistant units suitable for the collection of hydrometeorological data from remote severe weather environments. The detailed design of the wind speed and direction system and the wire-wrapping of the logic boards were completed.

A study of the utilization of EREP data from the Wabash River basin

The author has identified the following significant results. The study of the multispectral data sets indicate that better land use delineation using machine processing techniques can be obtained with data from multispectral scanners than digitized S190A photographic sensor data. Results of the multiemulsion photographic data set were a little better than the multiband photographic data set. Comparison results of the interim and filtered S191 data indicate that the data were improved some for machine processing techniques. Results of the S191 X-5 detector array studied over a wintertime scene indicate that a good quality far infrared channel can be useful. The S191 spectroradiometer study results indicate that the data from the S191 was usable, and it was possible to estimate the path radiance.

Interdisciplinary applications and interpretations of EREP data within the Susquehanna River Basin

The author has identified the following significant results. Photography from the S190A and S190B sensors was compared, for terrain analysis. The S190B photographs were used for terrain mapping of three test areas selected as being representative of major physiographic regions in Pennsylvania. Skylab photography was superior to both LANDSAT imagery and high altitude aircraft photography for purposes of accurate location of lineaments. Analysis of Skylab imagery has shown that long lineaments originally plotted on LANDSAT images are actually made up of shorter segments. Correlation of lineaments with ore deposits was determined following the preparation of a Pennsylvania mineral deposit map. Digital wave number analysis (spatial filtering) was attempted to determine if it can be used to enhance certain subtle features, and in particular, to locate and verify lineaments. Various spectral bands and channels of the MSS digital data were evaluated for their value in the classification and thematic mapping.

A parametric study of the value of hydrological information for irrigation and hydropower management of the Feather River

A case study analysis is presented of the relationships between improvements in the accuracy, frequency, and timeliness of information used in making hydrological forecasts and economic benefits in the areas of hydropower and irrigation. The area chosen for the case study is the Oroville Dam and Reservoir. Emphasis is placed on the use of timely and accurate mapping of the aerial extent of snow in the basin by earth resources survey systems such as LANDSAT. The subject of benefits resulting from improved runoff forecasts is treated in a generalized way without specifying the source of the improvements.

Interdisciplinary applications and interpretations of ERTS data within the Susquehanna River basin

The author has identified the following significant results. The full potential of high quality data is achieved only with the application of efficient and effective interpretation techniques. An excellent operating system for handling, processing, and interpreting ERTS-1 and other MSS data was achieved. Programs for processing digital data are implemented on a large nondedicated general purpose computer. Significant results were attained in mapping land use, agricultural croplands, forest resources, and vegetative cover. Categories of land use classified and mapped depend upon the geographic location, the detail required, and the types of lands use of interest. Physiographic and structural provinces are spectacularly displayed on ERTS-1 MSS image mosaics. Geologic bedrock structures show up well and formation contacts can sometimes be traced for hundreds of kilometers. Large circular structures and regional features, previously obscured by the detail of higher resolution data, can be seen. Environmental monitoring was performed in three areas: coal strip mining, coal refuse problems, and damage to vegetation caused by insects and pollution.

Application of remote sensing in estimating evapotranspiration in the Platte river basin

A 'resistance model' and a mass transport model for estimating evapotranspiration (ET) were tested on large fields of naturally subirrigated alfalfa. Both models make use of crop canopy temperature data. Temperature data were obtained with an IR thermometer and with leaf thermocouples. A Bowen ratio-energy balance (BREB) model, adjusted to account for underestimation of ET during periods of strong sensible heat advection, was used as the standard against which the resistance and mass transport models were compared. Daily estimates by the resistance model were within 10% of estimates made by the BREB model. Daily estimates by the mass transport model did not agree quite as well. Performance was good on clear and cloudy days and also during periods of non-advection and strong advection of sensible heat. The performance of the mass transport and resistance models was less satisfactory for estimation of fluxes of latent heat for short term periods. Both models tended to overestimate at low LE fluxes.
