Implications of the Gaia sausage for dark matter nuclear interactions

The advent of the Gaia era has led to potentially revolutionary understanding of dark matter (DM) dynamics in our galaxy, which has important consequences for direct detection (DD) experiments. In this paper, we study how the empirical DM velocity distribution inferred from Gaia-sausage, a dominant substructure in the solar neighborhood, affects the interpretation of DD data. We survey different classes of operators in the nonrelativistic effective field theory that could arise from several relativistic benchmark models and emphasize that the Gaia velocity distribution could modify both the total number of events as well as the shape of the differential recoil spectra, the two primary observables in DD experiments. Employing the Euclideanized signal method, we investigate the effects of the Gaia distribution on reconstructing DM model parameters and identifying the correct DM model given a positive signal at future DD experiments. We find that for light DM with mass ~10 GeV, the Gaia distribution poses an additional challenge for characterizing DM interactions with ordinary matter, which may be addressed by combining complementary DD experiments with different targets and lowering the detection threshold. Meanwhile, for heavy DM with mass above ~30 GeV , depending on the type of DM model, there could be a (moderate) improvement in the sensitivity at future DD experiments.

Light new physics in XENON1T

We examine the recently-reported low-energy electron recoil spectrum observed at the XENON1T underground dark matter direct detection experiment, in the context of new interactions with solar neutrinos. In particular we show that scalar and vector mediators with masses $\lesssim 50$ keV coupled to leptons could already leave a visible signature in the XENON1T experiment, similar to the observed peak below 7 keV. This signals that dark matter detectors are already competing with neutrino scattering experiments such as GEMMA, CHARM-II and Borexino. If these results from XENON1T are interpreted as a new signal of such physics, the parameters which fit the excess face challenges from astrophysics which seem very difficult to overcome. If they are rather viewed as a constraint on new couplings, they herald the start of an era of novel precise probes of physics beyond the standard model with dark matter detectors.

Axial and pseudoscalar form factors from charged current quasielastic neutrino-nucleon scattering

We study the scattering of neutrinos on polarized and unpolarized free nucleons, and also the polarization of recoil particles in these scatters. In contrast to electromagnetic processes, the parity-violating weak interaction gives rise to large spin asymmetries at leading order. Future polarization measurements could provide independent access to the proton axial structure and allow the first extraction of the pseudoscalar form factor from neutrino data without the conventional partially conserved axial current (PCAC) ansatz and assumptions about the pion-pole dominance. The pseudoscalar form factor can be accessed with precise measurements with muon (anti)neutrinos of a few hundreds MeV of energy or with tau (anti)neutrinos. The axial form factor can be extracted from scattering measurements using accelerator neutrinos of all energies.

Revisiting the dark matter interpretation of excess rates in semiconductors

In light of recent results from low-threshold dark matter detectors, we revisit the possibility of a common dark matter origin for multiple excesses across numerous direct detection experiments, with a focus on the excess rates in semiconductor detectors. We explore the interpretation of the low-threshold calorimetric excess rates above 40 eV in the silicon SuperCDMS Cryogenic Phonon Detector and above 100 eV in the germanium EDELWEISS Surface detector as arising from a common but unknown origin, and demonstrate a compatible fit for the observed energy spectra in both experiments, which follow a power law of index α = 3.4 3 - 0.06 + 0.11 . Despite the intriguing scaling of the normalization of these two excess rates with approximately the square of the mass number A 2 , we argue that the possibility of common origin by dark matter scattering via nuclear recoils is strongly disfavored, even allowing for exotic condensed matter effects in an as-yet unmeasured kinematic regime, due to the unphysically large dark matter velocity required to give comparable rates in the different energy ranges of the silicon and germanium excesses. We also investigate the possibility of inelastic nuclear scattering by cosmic ray neutrons, solar neutrinos, and photons as the origin, and quantitatively disfavor all three based on known fluxes of particles.

Multidifferential study of identified charged hadron distributions in Z -tagged jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =13$ TeV

Jet fragmentation functions are measured for the first time in proton-proton collisions for charged pions, kaons, and protons within jets recoiling against a Z boson. The charged-hadron distributions are studied longitudinally and transversely to the jet direction for jets with transverse momentum 20 < p T < 100 GeV and in the pseudorapidity range 2.5 < η <4. The data sample was collected with the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.64 fb –1 . Triple differential distributions as a function of the hadron longitudinal momentum fraction, hadron transverse momentum, and jet transverse momentum are also measured for the first time. This helps constrain transverse-momentum-dependent fragmentation functions. Differences in the shapes and magnitudes of the measured distributions for the different hadron species provide insights into the hadronization process for jets predominantly initiated by light quarks.

Search for the e + e − → η b ( 1 S ) ω and e + e − → χ b 0 ( 1 P ) ω processes at s = 10.745 GeV

We search for the e + e − → η b ( 1 S ) ω and e + e − → χ b 0 ( 1 P ) ω processes at a center-of-mass energy of 10.745 GeV, which is close to the peak of the ϒ ( 10753 ) state. We use data collected by the Belle II experiment during a special run, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.8 fb − 1 . We reconstruct ω → π + π − π 0 decays and use the ω meson’s recoil mass to search for the signals. We do not find evidence for either process, and set upper limits on the corresponding Born-level cross sections of 2.5 pb and 7.8 pb, respectively, at the 90% confidence level. The χ b 0 ( 1 P ) ω limit is the result of a combination of this analysis and a previous search using full reconstruction. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Higgs boson width and couplings at high energy muon colliders with forward muon detection

We propose a novel method using the ZZ-fusion channel and forward muon detection at high energy muon colliders to address the challenge of the Higgs coupling-width degeneracy. Our approach enables inclusive Higgs rate measurement to 0.75% at 10 TeV muon collider, breaking the coupling-width degeneracy. Results indicate the potential to refine Higgs coupling to subpercent levels and estimate its total width within (–0.41%, +2.1%). Key insights include the effectiveness of forward muon tagging in signal-background separation despite broad recoil mass distribution due to muon energy reconstruction and beam energy spread. The study emphasizes the significance of muon rapidity coverage up to |η⁡(μ)| < 6, enhancing measurement precision. Our findings highlight the unique capabilities of high energy lepton colliders for model-independent Higgs coupling determination and lay the groundwork for future advancements in muon collider technology and Higgs physics research.

Accessing the gluon GTMD F 1 , 4 in exclusive π 0 production in e p collisions

We demonstrate that the longitudinal single target-spin asymmetry in exclusive π 0 production in e p collisions can give access to the imaginary part of the gluon generalized transverse momentum distribution (GTMD) F 1 , 4 . Such a longitudinal spin asymmetry that results from the Coulomb-nuclear interference effect, leads to a characteristic azimuthal angular correlation of sin 2 ϕ , where ϕ is the azimuthal angle between the scattered lepton transverse momentum and the recoil proton’s transverse momentum. We also present a numerical estimate of the asymmetry for the kinematics accessible at EIC and EicC. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Direct detection of light dark matter charged under a 𝐿 𝜇 − 𝐿 𝜏 symmetry

A possible extension of the Standard Model able to explain the recent measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon consists in adding a gauged 𝑈⁢(1) 𝐿𝜇−𝐿𝜏 symmetry. If the dark matter particle is charged under this symmetry, then the kinetic mixing between the new gauge boson and the photon induces dark matter-electron interactions. We derive direct detection constraints on light dark matter charged under a 𝑈⁢(1) 𝐿𝜇−𝐿𝜏 symmetry with electron recoil experiments and explore prospects with XLZD and OSCURA to close in the parameter space able to explain simultaneously the recent measurement on the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon and the observed relic density of dark matter. We further discuss the spin-dependent scattering contribution arising in this model, which was ignored previously in the literature.

Search for dark matter annual modulation with DarkSide-50

Dark matter may induce an event in an Earth-based detector, and its event rate is predicted to show an annual modulation as a result of the Earth’s orbital motion around the Sun. We searched for this modulation signature using the ionization signal of the DarkSide-50 liquid argon time projection chamber. No significant signature compatible with dark matter is observed in the electron recoil equivalent energy range above 40 eV ee , the lowest threshold ever achieved in such a search. Measurement of the B 8 solar neutrino flux using the full SNO + water phase dataset

The SNO+ detector operated initially as a water Cherenkov detector. The implementation of a sealed cover gas system midway through water data taking resulted in a significant reduction in the activity of 222 Rn daughters in the detector and allowed the lowest background to the solar electron scattering signal above 5 MeV achieved to date. This paper reports an updated SNO+ water phase 8 B solar neutrino analysis with a total livetime of 282.4 days and an analysis threshold of 3.5 MeV. The 8 B solar neutrino flux is found to be (2.3⁢2$^{+0.18}_{-0.17}⁢$(stat)$^{+0.07}_{-0.05}$⁢(syst))×10 6 cm -2 s -1 assuming no neutrino oscillations, or (5.3⁢6$^{+0.41}_{-0.39}⁢$(stat)+$^{0.17}_{-0.16}$⁢(syst))×10 6 cm -2 s -1 assuming standard neutrino oscillation parameters, in good agreement with both previous measurements and standard solar model calculations. The electron recoil spectrum is presented above 3.5 MeV.

Neutrino electromagnetic properties and the weak mixing angle at the LHC Forward Physics Facility

The LHC produces an intense beam of highly energetic neutrinos of all three flavors in the forward direction, and the Forward Physics Facility (FPF) has been proposed to house a suite of experiments taking advantage of this opportunity. In this study, we investigate the FPF’s potential to probe the neutrino electromagnetic properties, including neutrino millicharge, magnetic moment, and charge radius. We find that, due to the large flux of tau neutrinos at the LHC, the FPF detectors will be able to provide more sensitive constraints on the tau neutrino magnetic moment and millicharge than previous measurements at DONUT, by searching for excess in low recoil energy electron scattering events. We also find that, by precisely measuring the rate of neutral current deep inelastic scattering events, the FPF detectors have the potential to obtain the strongest experimental bounds on the neutrino charge radius for the electron neutrino, and one of the leading bounds for the muon neutrino flavor. The same signature could also be used to measure the weak mixing angle, and we estimate that sin 2 θ W could be measured to about 3% precision at a scale Q ∼ 10 GeV , shedding new light on the longstanding NuTeV anomaly. Appraising constrained second-order power corrections in HQET with Λ b →Λ c Ι⁢ν

We derive the Λ b →Λ c form factors for the Standard Model and beyond at second order in heavy quark effective theory, applying the recently proposed residual chiral expansion to reduce the set of unknown subsubleading hadronic functions to a single, highly constrained function, that is fully determined by hadron mass parameters at zero recoil. We fit a form factor parametrization based on these results to all available lattice QCD predictions and experimental data. We find that the constrained and predictive structure of the form factors under the residual chiral expansion is in excellent agreement with lattice QCD predictions and experimental data, as well as prior heavy-quark-effective-theory-based fits.

Signal processing and spectral modeling for the BeEST experiment

The Beryllium Electron capture in Superconducting Tunnel junctions (BeEST) experiment searches for evidence of heavy neutrino mass eigenstates in the nuclear electron capture decay of 7 Be by precisely measuring the recoil energy of the 7 Li daughter. In Phase III, the BeEST experiment has been scaled from a singl superconducting tunnel junction (STJ) sensor to a 36-pixel array to increase sensitivity and mitigate gamma-induced backgrounds. Phase III also uses a new continuous data acquisition system that greatly increases the flexibility for signal processing and data cleaning. Here, we have developed procedures for signal processing and spectral fitting that are sufficiently robust to be automated for large datasets. Furthermore, this article presents the optimized procedures before unblinding the majority of the Phase III dataset to search for physics beyond the standard model.

Search for inelastic boosted dark matter with the ICARUS detector at the Gran Sasso Underground National Laboratory

We present the result of a search for inelastic boosted dark matter using the data corresponding to an exposure of 0.13 kton · year , collected by the ICARUS T-600 detector during its 2012–2013 operational period at the INFN Gran Sasso Underground National Laboratory. The benchmark boosted dark matter model features a multiparticle dark sector with a U ( 1 ) ′ gauge boson, the dark photon. The kinetic mixing of the dark photon with the Standard Model photon allows for a portal between the dark sector and the visible sector. The inelastic boosted dark matter interaction occurs when a dark matter particle inelastically scatters with an electron in the ICARUS detector, producing an outgoing, heavier dark sector state which subsequently decays back down to the dark matter particle, emitting a dark photon. The dark photon subsequently couples to a Standard Model photon through kinetic mixing. The Standard Model photon then converts to an electron-positron pair in the detector. This interaction process provides a distinct experimental signature that consists of a recoil electron from the primary interaction and an associated electron-positron pair from the secondary vertex. After analyzing 4,134 triggered events, the search results in zero observed events. Exclusion limits are set in the dark photon mass and coupling ( m X , ε ) parameter space for several selected optimal boosted dark matter mass sets and cover previously unexplored parameter space. Study of Quasielastic Barrier Distributions as a Step towards the Synthesis of Superheavy Elements with Hot Fusion Reactions

The excitation functions for quasielastic scattering of Ne 22 + Cm 248 , Mg 26 + Cm 248 , and Ca 48 + U 238 are measured using a gas-filled recoil ion separator. The quasielastic barrier distributions are extracted for these systems and are compared with coupled-channel calculations. The results indicate that the barrier distribution is affected dominantly by deformation of the actinide target nuclei, but also by vibrational or rotational excitations of the projectile nuclei, as well as neutron transfer processes before capture. From a comparison between the experimental barrier distributions and the evaporation residue cross sections for Sg ( Z = 106 ), Hs (108), Cn (112), and Lv (116), it is suggested that the hot fusion reactions take advantage of a compact collision, where the projectile approaches along the short axis of a prolately deformed nucleus. Overall, a new method is proposed to estimate the optimum incident energy to synthesize unknown superheavy nuclei using the barrier distribution.

Multigluon Correlations and Evidence of Saturation from Dijet Measurements at an Electron-Ion Collider

In this work, we study inclusive and diffractive dijet production in electron-proton and electron-nucleus collisions within the color glass condensate effective field theory. We compute dijet cross sections differentially in both mean dijet transverse momentum P and recoil momentum Δ , as well as the anisotropy in the relative angle between P and Δ . Our results cover a much larger kinematic range than accessible in previous computations performed in the correlation limit approximation, where it is assumed that | P | &raquo | Δ | . We validate this approximation in its range of applicability and quantify its failure for | P | ≲ | Δ | . We also predict significant target-dependent deviations from the correlation limit approximation for | P | > | Δ | and | P | ≲ Q s , which offers a straightforward test of gluon saturation and access to multigluon distributions at a future Electron-Ion Collider.
