FY22 Development of Improved Grout Waste Forms for Supplemental Low Activity Waste Treatment

About 54 to 56 million gallons of radioactive mixed waste is currently stored in underground tanks at the United States Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Hanford site in the State of Washington. This waste will be separated into low- and high activity waste fractions, which will then be vitrified respectively into Immobilized Low Activity Waste (ILAW) and Immobilized High Level Waste (IHLW) products for subsequent disposal. The ILAW product will be disposed of in an engineered facility at the Hanford site while the IHLW product is designed for acceptance into a national deep geological disposal facility for high level nuclear waste. Treatment of the tank waste will take place in the Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP), which is under construction. However, since the WTP Low Activity Waste (LAW) Vitrification Facility was not designed to process the entire inventory of Hanford LAW, up to half of the retrieved Hanford LAW will require supplemental immobilization. Immobilizing LAW in a cementitious waste form known as Cast Stone has been investigated as a possible candidate supplemental immobilization technology

Novel multi-channel skipper-CCD packages for dark matter searches

The next generation of skipper Charge Coupled Device (skipper-CCD) experiments for rare-event searches will bring new challenges for the packaging and read-out of the detectors. Scaling the active mass and simultaneously reducing the experimental backgrounds in two orders of magnitude will require a novel high-density Silicon-based package, that must be massively produced and stored. In this work, we present the design, first production, and testing of multi-channel Silicon packages with photon shielding, along with the outlook for the next steps toward producing 1500 wafers that will add up to a 10 kg skipper-CCD detector.

Application of Multiharmonic QCM-D for Detection of Plasmin at Hydrophobic Surfaces Modified by β-Casein

Plasmin protease plays an important role in many processes in living systems, including milk. Monitoring plasmin activity is important for control of the nutritional quality of milk and other dairy products. We designed a biosensor to detect the proteolytic activity of plasmin, using multiharmonic quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D). The β-casein immobilized on the hydrophobic surface of 1-dodecanethiol on the AT-cut quartz crystal was used to monitor plasmin activity. We demonstrated detection of plasmin in a concentration range of 0.1–20 nM, with the limit of detection about 0.13 ± 0.01 nM. The analysis of viscoelastic properties of the β-casein layer showed rapid changes of shear elasticity modulus, μ, and coefficient of viscosity, η, at plasmin sub-nanomolar concentrations, followed by modest changes at nanomolar concentrations, indicating multilayer architecture β-casein. A comparative analysis of viscoelastic properties of β-casein layers following plasmin and trypsin cleavage showed that the higher effect of trypsin was due to larger potential cleavage sites of β-casein.

Transonic transport study, summary

The effects of possible increases in cruise speed over present-day transport aircraft were investigated. Increased cruise speed is desirable not only because of a possible competitive market advantage, but also because of the resulting increase in aircraft productivity. Aircraft designed to cruise at Mach numbers greater than those of present-day transports but less than those which produce a sonic boom on the ground were studied. The purpose of the study was three-fold: (1) to compare, on an equal basis, the performance and economics of advanced commercial transport aircraft designed to cruise at Mach numbers 0.90, 0.98, and 1.15; (2) to determine the sensitive technical areas affecting the performance and economics of the aircraft; and (3) to assess the impact of advanced technology, particularly the supercritical wing and advanced composite materials on the performance and economics of the aircraft.

Flight feeding systems design and evaluation. Supplement 1: Production guides

The requirements for processing, packaging, testing, and shipment of foods selected for use in the Apollo food system are presented. Specific foodstuffs chosen from the following categories are discussed: (1) soups; (2) juices; (3) breads; (4) meat and poultry products; (5) fruits and nuts; (6) desserts; and (7) beverages. Food procurement for the mobile quarantine facility and for Apollo preflight and postflight activities is also discussed.

Composite materials. Volume 3 - Engineering applications of composites. Volume 4 - Metallic matrix composites. Volume 8 - Structural design and analysis, Part 2

This volume discusses a vaety of applications of both low- and high-cost composite materials in a number of selected engineering fields. The text stresses the use of fiber-reinforced composites, along with interesting material systems used in the electrical and nuclear industries. As to technology transfer, a similarity is noted between many of the reasons responsible for the utilization of composites and those problems requiring urgent solution, such as mechanized fabrication processes and design for production. Features topics include road transportation, rail transportation, civil aircraft, space vehicles, builing industry, chemical plants, and appliances and equipment. The laminate orientation code devised by Air Force materials laboratory is included. Individual items are announced in this issue.

Arrow-wing supersonic cruise aircraft structural design concepts evaluation. Volume 4: Sections 15 through 21

The analyses performed to provide structural mass estimates for the arrow wing supersonic cruise aircraft are presented. To realize the full potential for structural mass reduction, a spectrum of approaches for the wing and fuselage primary structure design were investigated. The objective was: (1) to assess the relative merits of various structural arrangements, concepts, and materials; (2) to select the structural approach best suited for the Mach 2.7 environment; and (3) to provide construction details and structural mass estimates based on in-depth structural design studies. Production costs, propulsion-airframe integration, and advanced technology assessment are included.

Block 4 solar cell module design and test specification for intermediate load center applications

Requirements for performance of terrestrial solar cell modules intended for use in various test applications are established. During the 1979-80 time period, such applications are expected to be in the 20 to 500 kilowatt size range. A series of characterization and qualification tests necessary to certify the module design for production, and the necessary performance test for acceptance of modules are specified.
