Morphology of poly-p-xylylene crystallized during polymerization.

The morphology of as-polymerized poly-p-xylylene grown between -17 and 30 C is found to consist of lame llar alpha crystals oriented with the (010) plane parallel to the support surface. The crystallinity decreases with decreasing polymerization temperature. Spherulitic and nonspherulitic portions of the polymer film consist of folded chain lamellas with the chain axis parallel to the support surface. The results were obtained by small- and wide-angle X-ray measurements, electron and optical microscopy, and differential thermal analysis.

Crystal structure of alpha poly-p-xylylene.

A crystal structure of alpha poly-p-xylylene is proposed with the help of data of oriented crystals grown during polymerization. The unit cell is monoclinic with the parameters a = 8.57 A, b = 10.62 A, c = 6.54 A (chain axis), and beta = 101.3 deg. Four repeating units per cell lead to a calculated density of 1.185 g/cu cm and a packing density of 0.71. The probable space group is P2 sub 1/m.

Integrated p-channel MOS gyrator

Several circuits can be integrated into one chip for applications which require more than one gyrator. They can also be integrated with other p-channel MOS circuits to eliminate need for external connections. Devices can operate at economical low-power levels, because they use FET amplifiers that do not degrade with decreases in supply.

Rigorous precision p-wave positron-hydrogen scattering calculation

Rigorous lower-bound p-wave positron-hydrogen phase shifts are calculated below the positronium pickup threshold. The wave function is expanded in terms of the two linearly independent D functions each multiplied by an associated Hilleraas-type radial function with two parameters. Adiabatic and nonadiabatic corrections have been included. The results are found to be larger than Armstead's (1968) in all cases near the upper edge of his estimated uncertainty.

Effects of intrinsic region width in Si/Li/ p-i-n diodes

Description of certain effects related to the width of the intrinsic region produced in a silicon p-i-n diode by lithium ion drifting. It is found that for wider intrinsic regions at large forward biases there is a larger ohmic drop across the region and a correspondingly smaller current. Moreover, the recovery time decreases with increasing intrinsic region width. Conversely, the decay phase time increases with increasing intrinsic region width and with increasing current levels.

Real-time simulation of the TF30-P-3 turbofan engine using a hybrid computer

A real-time, hybrid-computer simulation of the TF30-P-3 turbofan engine was developed. The simulation was primarily analog in nature but used the digital portion of the hybrid computer to perform bivariate function generation associated with the performance of the engine's rotating components. FORTRAN listings and analog patching diagrams are provided. The hybrid simulation was controlled by a digital computer programmed to simulate the engine's standard hydromechanical control. Both steady-state and dynamic data obtained from the digitally controlled engine simulation are presented. Hybrid simulation data are compared with data obtained from a digital simulation provided by the engine manufacturer. The comparisons indicate that the real-time hybrid simulation adequately matches the baseline digital simulation.

Effect of a 180 deg-extent inlet pressure distortion on the internal flow conditions of a TF30-P-3

The measured effects of inlet pressure distortion on the internal flow temperatures and pressures of a TF30-P-3 afterburning turbofan engine are reported. Extensive inner-stage instrumentation combined with stepwise rotation of pressure distortion provided a high degree of circumferential resolution in the data. The steady-state spatial variation in pressures, temperature, and calculated flow velocity and the amplitude and extent of the distorted sectors are given. Data are presented for runs of 77 and 90 percent of low-speed-rotor design speed at pressure distortion levels two-thirds of that required to stall the engine. These data are compared with data taken at clean-inlet conditions. Results indicate that the inlet pressure distortion was quickly attenuated within the compressor, except at the hub of the low-pressure compressor. The distorted sectors also swirled and varied in extent as they passed through the engine. Average velocities within the compressor were about equal to the clean-inlet values.

Modeling and analysis of the TF30-P-3 compressor system with inlet pressure distortion

Circumferential inlet distortion testing of a TF30-P-3 afterburning turbofan engine was conducted at NASA-Lewis Research Center. Pratt and Whitney Aircraft analyzed the data using its multiple segment parallel compressor model and classical compressor theory. Distortion attenuation analysis resulted in a detailed flow field calculation with good agreement between multiple segment model predictions and the test data. Sensitivity of the engine stall line to circumferential inlet distortion was calculated on the basis of parallel compressor theory to be more severe than indicated by the data. However, the calculated stall site location was in agreement with high response instrumentation measurements.

Analysis of distortion data from TF30-P-3 mixed compression inlet test

A program was conducted to reduce and analyze inlet and engine data obtained during testing of a TF30-P-3 engine operating behind a mixed compression inlet. Previously developed distortion analysis techniques were applied to the data to assist in the development of a new distortion methodology. Instantaneous distortion techniques were refined as part of the distortion methodology development. A technique for estimating maximum levels of instantaneous distortion from steady state and average turbulence data was also developed as part of the program.

Error Analysis of the Shuttle Orbital Maneuvering System P-V-T Propellant Gaging Module. Mission Planning, Mission Analysis and Software Formulation

An investigation of the shuttle orbital maneuvering system (OMS) pressure-volume-temperature (P-V-T) propellant gaging module has revealed that the gaging errors due to the combined effects of random instrumentation measurement errors, propellant loading uncertainties, and simplifying assumptions in the software are non-linear over the range of the usable propellant quantity gage (0-100%), with the largest error being at the zero point. When the OMS propellant tanks in the orbiter vehicle pods are filled to contain 100% of the maximum usable propellant, the gaging error at the zero point was determined to be 9.5% for the fuel and 9.5% for the oxidizer. When the OMS propellant tanks initially contain 50% of the maximum usable propellant, the largest gaging error is still 9.5% for the fuel and 9.5% for the oxidizer.

Circumferential distortion modeling of the TF30-P-3 compression system

Circumferential inlet pressure and temperature distortion testing of the TF30 P-3 turbofan engine was conducted. The compressor system at the test conditions run was modelled according to a multiple segment parallel compressor model. Aspects of engine operation and distortion configuration modelled include the effects of compressor bleeds, relative pressure-temperature distortion alignment and circumferential distortion extent. Model predictions for limiting distortion amplitudes and flow distributions within the compression system were compared with test results in order to evaluate predicted trends. Relatively good agreement was obtained. The model also identified the low pressure compressor as the stall-initiating component, which was in agreement with the data.

Studies of silicon p-n junction solar cells

Single crystal silicon p-n junction solar cells made with low resistivity substrates show poorer solar energy conversion efficiency than traditional theory predicts. The physical mechanisms responsible for this discrepancy are identified and characterized. The open circuit voltage in shallow junction cells of about 0.1 ohm/cm substrate resistivity is investigated under AMO (one sun) conditions.

An investigation of impurity redistribution in diffused layer on /n+/-p silicon solar cells parameters

Recent calculations by Wang et al. (1974) have shown that the short-circuit current for silicon solar cells is sensitive to the impurity distribution in the diffused and base region. In the present work, these theoretical results were verified by experimentally investigating the impurity profile and sheet resistance of the diffused layers of (n+)-p silicon solar cells fabricated by normal diffusion processes and at subsequently various drive-in times. Impurity profiles of the n+ diffused layer, measured by differential Hall and resistivity technique, resemble the erfc distribution. The junction depth is larger as drive-in time increases. Measured short-circuit current is in agreement with calculated ones. Open-circuit voltage is independent of drive-in times, and its calculated values are consistent with capacitance-voltage measurements.

A first order theory of the p/+/-n-n/+/ edge-illuminated silicon solar cell at very high injection levels

A first order theory of the edge-illuminated p(+)-n-n(+) silicon solar cell under very high injection levels has been derived. The very high injection level illuminated J-V characteristic is derived for any general base width to diffusion length (W/L) ratio and it includes the minority carrier reflection by the n-n(+) high-low junction. The beneficial effects of the high-low junction are shown to be significant until extremely high injection levels are reached. The theoretical dependencies of Jsc and Voc on temperature, incident intensity, and base resistivity are derived and discussed in detail. Some experimental results are given and these are discussed in relation to the theory.

Measurement of material parameters that limit the open-circuit voltage in P-N-junction silicon solar cells

The greatest gains in solar energy conversion efficiency of p-n-junction silicon solar cells come from increasing the open-circuit voltage V sub OC; it is important to understand and characterize the material parameters that limit the V sub OC. Strong experimental evidence exists to support the assertion that either an anomalously large minority carrier charge storage or an anomalously small minority carrier lifetime in the quasi-neutral emitter region limits the open circuit voltage. A method is presented for measuring charge storage and effective lifetime. Static and transient measurements are analyzed using physical models of the solar cell characteristics. This analysis yields the emitter charge storage and life-time, which then can be related to the various physical mechanisms, such as energy band gap shrinkage, that have been proposed earlier as responsible for limiting V sub OC.
