Measurement of electrons from heavy-flavour hadron decays as a function of multiplicity in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The multiplicity dependence of electron production from heavy-flavour hadron decays as a function of transverse momentum was measured in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV using the ALICE detector at the LHC. The measurement was performed in the centre-of-mass rapidity interval -1.07 < y cms < 0.14 and transverse momentum interval 2 < p T < 16 GeV/c. The multiplicity dependence of the production of electrons from heavy-flavour hadron decays was studied by comparing the p T spectra measured for different multiplicity classes with those measured in pp collisions (Q pPb ) and in peripheral p-Pb collisions (Q cp ). The Q pPb results obtained are consistent with unity within uncertainties in the measured p T interval and event classes. This indicates that heavy-flavour decay electron production is consistent with binary scaling and independent of the geometry of the collision system. Additionally, the results suggest that cold nuclear matter effects are negligible within uncertainties, in the production of heavy-flavour decay electrons at midrapidity in p-Pb collisions.

Inclusive, prompt and non-prompt J/ψ production at midrapidity in p-Pb collisions at $ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $ = 5.02 TeV

A measurement of inclusive, prompt, and non-prompt J/ψ production in p-Pb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy √ s NN = 5.02 TeV is presented. The inclusive J/ψ mesons are reconstructed in the dielectron decay channel at midrapidity down to a transverse momentum p T = o. The inclusive J/ψ nuclear modification factor R pPb is calculated by comparing the new results in p-Pb collisions to a recently measured proton-proton reference at the same centre-of-mass energy. Non-prompt J/ψ mesons, which originate from the decay of beauty hadrons, are separated from promptly produced J/ψ on a statistical basis for p T larger than 1.0 GeV/c. These results are based on the data sample collected by the ALICE detector during the 2016 LHC p-Pb run, corresponding to an integrated luminosity L int = 292 ± 11 μb –1 , which is six times larger than the previous publications. The total uncertainty on the p T -integrated inclusive J/ψ and non-prompt J/ψ cross section are reduced by a factor 1.7 and 2.2, respectively. The measured cross sections and R pPb are compared with theoretical models that include various combinations of cold nuclear matter effects. From the non-prompt J/ψ production cross section, the bb¯ production cross section at midrapidity, dσ bb¯ /dy, and the total cross section extrapolated over full phase space, σ bb¯ , are derived.

Observation and branching fraction measurement of the decay J / ψ → p ¯ Σ + K S 0 + c . c .

The first observation of the decays J / ψ → p ¯ Σ + K S 0 and J / ψ → p Σ ¯ − K S 0 is reported using ( 10087 ± 44 ) × 10 6 J / ψ events recorded by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. The branching fractions of each channel are determined to be B ( J / ψ → p ¯ Σ + K S 0 ) = ( 1.361 ± 0.006 ± 0.025 ) × 10 − 4 , and B ( J / ψ → p Σ ¯ − K S 0 ) = ( 1.352 ± 0.006 ± 0.025 ) × 10 − 4 . The combined result is B ( J / ψ → p ¯ Σ + K S 0 + c . c . ) = ( 2.725 ± 0.009 ± 0.050 ) × 10 − 4 , where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The results presented are in good agreement with the branching fractions of the isospin partner decay J / ψ → p K − Σ ¯ 0 + c . c . Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Elucidating the Location of Cd 2+ in Post-synthetically Treated InP Quantum Dots Using Dynamic Nuclear Polarization 31 P and 113 Cd Solid-State NMR Spectroscopy

Indium phosphide quantum dots (InP QD) are a promising alternative to traditional QD materials that contain toxic heavy elements such as lead and cadmium. However, InP QD obtained from colloidal synthesis are often plagued by poor photoluminescence quantum yields (PL-QYs). In order to improve the PL-QY of InP QD, a number of post-synthetic treatments have been devised. Recently, it has been shown that InP post-synthetically treated with Lewis acid metal divalent cations (M-InP) exhibit enhanced PL-QY; however, the molecular structure and mechanism behind the improved PL-QY are not fully understood. Here, to determine the surface structure of M-InP QD, dynamic nuclear polarization surface-enhanced nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (DNP SENS) experiments were employed on a series of InP magic size clusters treated with Cd ions, InP QD, cadmium phosphide (Cd 3 P 2 ) QD, and Cd-treated InP QD (Cd–InP QD). With the use of DNP SENS, we were able to obtain the 1D 31 P and 113 Cd NMR spectra, 113 Cd{ 31 P} rotational-echo double-resonance (REDOR) NMR spectra, and 31 P{ 113 Cd} dipolar heteronuclear multiple quantum correlation (D-HMQC) sequence. Changes in the phosphide 31 P chemical shifts after Cd treatment provide indirect evidence that some Cd alloys into the sub-surface regions of the particle. DNP-enhanced 113 Cd solid-state NMR spectra suggest that most Cd ions are coordinated by oxygen atoms from either carboxylate ligands or surface phosphate groups. 113 Cd{ 31 P} REDOR and 31 P{ 113 Cd} D-HMQC experiments confirm that a subset of Cd ions are located on the surface of Cd–InP QD and coordinated with phosphate groups.

Spontaneous mesostructure formation produces optically transmissive Ni–P films that are catalytically active for the photoelectrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction

Ni–P films that are catalytically active for the hydrogen-evolution reaction were electrodeposited onto photoactive Si substrates between 20 °C and 80 °C from an aqueous solution. Ni–P films deposited at 20 °C and exposed to acidic environments spontaneously developed deep cracks. A substantial increase in optical transmission to the semiconducting substrate resulted without affecting the catalytic performance of the film. In contrast, Ni–P films deposited at 80 °C only developed minor surface-level cracks and did not exhibit a substantial increase in optical transmission. During electrodeposition of the Ni–P films at low temperatures, the uptake of parasitically evolved hydrogen generated partially defective Ni–P, causing crack formation. Increases in the temperature of the electrodeposition bath increased the faradaic efficiency of Ni–P deposition and consequently reduced the uptake of parasitically generated hydrogen. The defective Ni–P films were converted to a crack-resistant material by thermally desorbing the excess hydrogen that was absorbed during the low-temperature electrodeposition process.

Effects of Co substitution on the structural and magnetic properties of Sr ( Ni 1 - x Co x ) 2 P 2

Although SrNi 2 P 2 adopts the common ThCr 2 Si 2 structure for T ≥ 325 K, being in an uncollapsed tetragonal state rather than a collapsed tetragonal version, it is a special case for the ThCr 2 Si 2 class: on cooling below 325 K it adopts a one-third collapsed orthorhombic phase where one out of every three P rows bonds across the Sr layers. On the other hand, SrCo 2 P 2 only exhibits the uncollapsed ThCr 2 Si 2 structure from room temperature down to 1.8 K. Regardless of their low-temperature structures, neither SrNi 2 P 2 nor SrCo 2 P 2 manifests magnetic transitions down to 50 mK and 2 K, respectively. In this work we report the effects of Co substitution in Sr(Ni 1 - x Co x ) 2 P 2 , which allows for tuning the transition between the one-third collapsed and the uncollapsed structure. We find a rapid decrease of the one-third collapsed structural transition temperature with increasing Co fraction, until reaching full suppression for x ≥ 0.1. Substitution levels in the range 0.11 ≤ x ≤ 0.58 show no signs of any transition down to 1.8 K in the magnetization or resistance measurements in the range 1.8 ≤ T ≤ 300 K. However, different magnetically ordered states emerge for x ≥ 0.65, and disappear for x ≥ 0.99, recovering the known paramagnetic properties of the parent compound SrCo 2 P 2 . Further, these results are summarized in a phase diagram, built upon the characterization by energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, temperature-dependent resistance, and field- and temperature-dependent magnetization measurements done on single crystals with different Co fraction. Both the magnetic and structural properties are compared to other systems with ThCr 2 Si 2 structure that exhibit magnetic ordering and collapsed tetragonal transitions. The magnetic ordering and moment formation are well described by Takahashi's spin fluctuation theory of itinerant electron magnetism.

Tuning the structure and superconductivity of SrNi 2⁢ P 2 by Rh substitution

The compound SrNi 2⁢ P 2 is unique among the ThCr 2 ⁢Si 2 class since it exhibits a temperature-induced transition upon cooling from an uncollapsed tetragonal (ucT) state to a one-third-collapsed orthorhombic (tcO) state where one out of every three P-rows bond across the Sr layers. This compound is also known for exhibiting bulk superconductivity below 1.4 K at ambient pressure. Here, in this paper, we report on the effects of Rh substitution in Sr⁢(Ni 1-x ⁢Rh x ) 2 ⁢P 2 on the structural and superconducting properties. We studied the variation of the nearest P-P distances as a function of the Rh fraction at room temperature, as well as its temperature dependence for selected compositions. We find that increasing the Rh fraction leads to a decrease in the transition temperature between the ucT and tcO states, until a full suppression of the tcO state for x ≥ 0.166. The superconducting transition first remains nearly insensitive to the Rh fraction, and then it increases to 2.3 K after the tcO state is fully suppressed. These results are summarized in a phase diagram, built upon the characterization by energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, resistance, magnetization, and specific heat measurements done on crystalline samples with varying Rh content. The relationship between band structure, crystal structure, and superconductivity is discussed based on previously reported band structure calculations on SrRh 2 ⁢P 2 . Moreover, the effect of Rh fraction on the stress-induced structural transitions is also addressed by means of strain-stress studies done by uniaxial compression of single-crystalline micropillars of Sr⁢(Ni 1-x ⁢Rh x ) 2 ⁢P 2 .

Observation of strangeness enhancement with charmed mesons in high-multiplicity p Pb collisions at s NN = 8.16 TeV

The production of prompt D s + and D + mesons is measured by the LHCb experiment in proton-lead ( p Pb ) collisions in both the forward ( 1.5 < y * < 4.0 ) and backward ( − 5.0 < y * < − 2.5 ) rapidity regions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of s NN = 8.16 TeV . The nuclear modification factors of both D s + and D + mesons are determined as a function of transverse momentum, p T , and rapidity. In addition, the D s + to D + cross section ratio is measured as a function of the primary charged particle multiplicity in the event. An enhanced D s + to D + production in high-multiplicity events is observed for the whole measured p T range, in particular at low p T and backward rapidity, where the significance exceeds six standard deviations. This constitutes the first observation of strangeness enhancement in charm quark hadronization in high-multiplicity p Pb collisions. The results are also qualitatively consistent with the presence of quark coalescence as an additional charm quark hadronization mechanism in high-multiplicity proton-lead collisions. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Study of Λ b 0 and Ξ b 0 Decays to Λ h + h ′ − and Evidence for C P Violation in Λ b 0 → Λ K + K − Decays

A study of Λ b 0 and Ξ b 0 decays to Λ h + h ′ − ( h ( ′ ) = π , K ) is performed using p p collision data collected by the LHCb experiment during LHC Runs 1–2, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb − 1 . The branching fractions for these decays are measured using the Λ b 0 → Λ c + ( → Λ π + ) π − decay as a control channel. The decays Λ b 0 → Λ π + π − and Ξ b 0 → Λ K − π + are observed for the first time. For decay modes with sufficient signal yields, C P asymmetries are measured in the full and localized regions of the final-state phase space. Evidence is found for C P violation in the Λ b 0 → Λ K + K − decay, interpreted as originating primarily from an asymmetric Λ b 0 → N * + K − decay amplitude. The measured C P asymmetries for other decays are compatible with zero. © 2025 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2025 CERN

Search for Time-Dependent C P Violation in D 0 → π + π − π 0 Decays

A measurement of time-dependent C P violation in D 0 → π + π − π 0 decays using a p p collision data sample collected by the LHCb experiment in 2012 and from 2015 to 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.7 fb − 1 , is presented. The initial flavor of each D 0 candidate is determined from the charge of the pion produced in the D * ( 2010 ) + → D 0 π + decay. The decay D 0 → K − π + π 0 is used as a control channel to validate the measurement procedure. The gradient of the time-dependent C P asymmetry Δ Y in D 0 → π + π − π 0 decays is measured to be Δ Y = ( − 1.3 ± 6.3 ± 2.4 ) × 10 − 4 , where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic, which is compatible with C P conservation. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

High foliar K and P resorption efficiencies in old-growth tropical forests growing on nutrient-poor soils

Resorption is the active withdrawal of nutrients before leaf abscission. This mechanism represents an important strategy to maintain efficient nutrient cycling; however, resorption is poorly characterized in old-growth tropical forests growing in nutrientpoor soils. We investigated nutrient resorption from leaves in 39 tree species in two tropical forests on the Guiana Shield, French Guiana, to investigate whether resorption efficiencies varied with soil nutrient, seasonality, and species traits. The stocks of P in leaves, litter, and soil were low at both sites, indicating potential P limitation of the forests. Accordingly, mean resorption efficiencies were higher for P (35.9%) and potassium (K; 44.6%) than for nitrogen (N; 10.3%). K resorption was higher in the wet (70.2%) than in the dry (41.7%) season. P resorption increased slightly with decreasing total soil P; and N and P resorptions were positively related to their foliar concentrations. We conclude that nutrient resorption is a key plant nutrition strategy in these old-growth tropical forests, that trees with high foliar nutrient concentration reabsorb more nutrient, and that nutrients resorption in leaves, except P, are quite decoupled from nutrients in the soil. Seasonality and biochemical limitation played a role in the resorption of nutrients in leaves, but species-specific requirements obscured general tendencies at stand and ecosystem level.

Clathrate BaNi 2 P 4 : An Interplay of Heat and Charge Transport Due to Strong Host–Guest Interactions

Heat and charge transport properties of the metallic unconventional clathrate BaNi 2 P 4 , hosting Ba cations in oversized Ni 8 P 16 cages, are investigated. A novel method of single-crystal growth was developed, yielding 2–3 mm sized crystals of BaNi 2 P 4 . We also developed a setup to accurately measure thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity of the synthesized single crystals in a wide temperature range avoiding crystal remounting. BaNi 2 P 4 has a metallic temperature dependence of its electrical resistivity (decreasing with decreasing temperature) and manifests an unconventional T 2 power law for 50 K < T < 300 K; below 50 K, the power-law exponent increases gradually such that below 10 K the power law is T 5 , a predicted but extremely rarely experimentally observed dependence for peculiar electron–phonon interactions. Furthermore, electronic band structure calculations, consistent with measurements of de Haas–van Alphen oscillations, show large band dispersions with significant contributions of Ba orbitals to states near the Fermi level, which is atypical for clathrates. The thermal properties of BaNi 2 P 4 were probed using a combination of variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments, heat capacity measurements, first-principles phonon dispersion calculations, and inelastic neutron scattering measurements. BaNi 2 P 4 exhibits significant hybridization of the Ba-guest and Ni–P-framework vibrational modes, which may be enhanced via the detected split of the Ba position, which results in strong Ba-framework interactions.

Probing of the Noninnocent Role of P in Transition-Metal Phosphide Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Electrocatalysts via Replacement with Electropositive Si

Transition-metal phosphides (TMP) have been identified as promising electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Despite recent computational investigations identifying P sites as being crucial for hydrogen adsorption, the main mode of optimization for TMPs has been focused on changing the metal sites. Here, to experimentally verify computational hypotheses and provide a route for HER electrocatalyst optimization via ternary compounds, we performed systematic experimental studies of structurally related NiSi 1–x P x phases, namely, Ni 2 SiP, Ni 5 Si 2 P 3 , Ni 3 SiP 2 , and Ni 7 Si 2 P 5 , which are ordered derivatives of the NiSi structure (Pnma, oP-8, MnP structure type). We found that P played a significant role in modulating HER activity in an acidic electrolyte because the incorporation of P in NiSi reduced the overpotential at current density j = 10 mA/cm 2 from η 10 = 529 mV (NiSi) to η 10 = 97 mV (Ni 2 SiP). Ni 2 SiP outperformed the current state-of-the-art Ni5P4 electrocatalyst prepared and studied in identical conditions both in terms of activity and stability, which is attributed to the presence of covalent Ni–Si bonding in the structure. Within the family of ternary Ni–Si–P compounds, electrocatalytic activity correlates with the number of Ni-3d states at the Fermi energy.

Probing Phosphorus Solubility and Its Effect on Critical Temperature ( T c ) in the Helical Superconducting Magnet RbEuFe 4 As 4– x P x

RbEuFe 4 As 4 exhibits a rare combination of high-temperature superconductivity and noncollinear magnetism, originating from the FeAs and Eu layers, respectively. In order to fine-tune its superconducting and magnetic properties, we studied P-doped RbEuFe 4 As 4–x P x . To determine the value of x for which RbEuFe 4 As 4–x P x exists, members of the series have been synthesized in the form of relatively large-sized single crystals by a high-temperature flux growth technique using RbAs flux as well as polycrystalline powder by direct combination reactions between RbFe 2 As 2 and EuFe 2 As 2–x P x . The flux crystal growth reactions indicate that RbEuFe 4 As 4–x P x forms with the values of x ≤ 0.12, which is corroborated by the Rietveld refinement analysis on the products obtained from direct combination reactions. The solubility limit exists primarily due to the preferential site As(2) occupation by P in the RbEuFe 4 As 4 crystal structure. Finally, as x increases in RbEuFe 4 As 4–x P x , magnetization measurements reveal that the superconducting critical transition temperature (T c ) decreases, while the magnetic ordering temperature (T N ) remains almost unchanged in comparison to undoped RbEuFe 4 As 4 .

Synthesis and Electrocatalytic HER Studies of Carbene-Ligated Cu 3– x P Nanocrystals

N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are an important class of ligands capable of making strong carbon-metal bonds. Recently, there has been a growing interest in the study of carbene-ligated nanocrystals, primarily coinage metal nano-crystals, which have found application as catalysts for numerous reactions. The general ability of NHC ligands to positively affect the catalytic properties of other types of nanocrystal catalysts remains unknown. Furthermore, we present the first carbene-stabilized Cu 3–x P nanocrystals. Inquiries into the mechanism of formation of NHC-ligated Cu 3-x P nanocrystals suggest that crystalline Cu 3–x P forms directly as a result of a high-temperature metathesis reaction be-tween a tris(trimethylsilyl)phosphine precursor and an NHC-CuBr precursor, the latter of which behaves as a source of both carbene ligand and Cu + . To study the effect of the NHC surface ligands on catalytic performance, we tested the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolving ability of the NHC-ligated Cu 3–x P nanocrystals and found they possess superior activity to analogous oleylamine-ligated Cu 3–x P nanocrystals. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the NHC ligands minimize unfavorable electrostatic interactions between the copper phosphide surface and H + during the first step of the hydrogen evolution reaction, which contributes to the superior performance of NHC-ligated Cu 3–x P catalysts as compared to oleylamine-ligated Cu 3–x P catalysts.

Understanding the Stability of Etched or Platinized p-GaInP Photocathodes for Solar-Driven H 2 Evolution

The long-term stability in acidic or alkaline aqueous electrolytes of p-Ga 0.52 In 0.48 P photocathodes, with a band gap of ~1.8 eV, for the solar-driven hydrogen-evolution reaction (HER) has been evaluated from a thermodynamic, kinetic, and mechanistic perspective. At either pH 0 or pH 14, etched p-GaInP electrodes corroded cathodically under illumination and formed metallic In 0 on the photoelectrode surface. In contrast, under the same conditions, electrodeposition of Pt facilitated the HER kinetics and stabilized p-GaInP/Pt photoelectrodes against such cathodic decomposition. When held at 0 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode, p-GaInP/Pt electrodes in either pH = 0 or pH = 14 exhibited stable current densities (J) of ~-9 mA cm -2 for hundreds of hours under simulated 1 sun illumination. During the stability tests, the current density-potential (J-E) characteristics of the p-GaInP/Pt photoelectrodes degraded due to pH-dependent changes in the surface chemistry of the photocathode. This work provides a fundamental understanding of the stability and corrosion mechanisms of p-GaInP photocathodes that constitute a promising top light absorber for tandem solar-fuel generators.

Structure of amorphous materials in the NASICON system Na 1+x Ti 2 Si x P 3−x O 12

Abstract The structure of glasses in the sodium (Na) super-ionic conductor (NASICON) system Na 1 + x Ti 2 Si x P 3 − x O 12 with x = 0.8 and x = 1.0 was explored by combining neutron and high-energy x-ray diffraction with 29 Si, 31 P and 23 Na solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The 29 Si magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectra reveal that the silica component remains fully polymerized in the form of Si 4 units, i.e. the silicon atoms are bound to four bridging oxygen atoms. The 31 P{ 23 Na} rotational echo adiabatic passage double resonance (REAPDOR) NMR data suggest that the 31 P MAS NMR line shape originates from four-coordinated P n units, where n = 1, 2 or 3 is the number of bridging oxygen atoms per phosphorus atom. These sites differ in their 31 P- 23 Na dipolar coupling strengths. The results support an intermediate range order scenario of a phosphosilicate mixed network-former glass in which the phosphate groups selectively attract the Na + modifier ions. Titanium takes a sub-octahedral coordination environment with a mean Ti–O coordination number of 5.17(4) for x = 0.8 and 4.86(4) for x = 1.0. A mismatch between the P–O and Si–O bond lengths of 8% is likely to inhibit the incorporation of silicon into the phosphorus sites of the NASICON crystal structure.
