Study of fluoride corrosion of nickel alloys

Report contains the results of an investigation of the corrosion resistance of nickel and nickel alloys exposed to fluorine, uranium hexafluoride, and volatile fission product fluorides at high temperatures. Survey of the unclassified literature on the subject is included.

Improved high-temperature-strength nickel-base superalloy

Nickel-base superalloy has a strength of 20,000 psi at 2,200 degrees F, approximately double the strength of the strongest available cast nickel-base alloys. It is not subject to the formation of embrittling phases upon long time exposure at intermediate temperatures.

Radiation-induced nickel deposits

Low cost, photographic process uses surface coating of nickel hypophosphite sensitive to X-rays and electron radiation. Exposed coated surface can be amplified to produce permanent visible image of wide tonal gradation in grays. Coating may be sodium, ammonium, or lithium hypophosphite or sodium phosphite, with nickel supplied in developer.

Development of uniform and predictable battery materials for nickel-cadmium aerospace cells

Battery materials and manufacturing methods were analyzed with the aim of developing uniform and predictable battery plates for nickel cadmium aerospace cells. A study is presented for the high temperature electrochemical impregnation process for the preparation of nickel cadmium battery plates. This comparative study is set up as a factorially designed experiment to examine both manufacturing and operational variables and any interaction that might exist between them. The manufacturing variables in the factorial design include plaque preparative method, plaque porosity and thickness, impregnation method, and loading, The operational variables are type of duty cycle, charge and discharge rate, extent of overcharge, and depth of discharge.

Improved plaque materials for aerospace nickel-cadmium cells

Improved cadmium electrode substrates with precisely controlled microstructures for possible use in aerospace nickel-cadmium cells were prepared. The preparative technique was a powder metallurgical process in which a fugitive pore-former and a nickel powder were blended, then isostatically compacted, and subsequently sintered. Cadmium electrodes prepared from such substrates were cycle tested using an accelerated tortuous test regime. It was discovered that plaques of 60% or 80% porosity prepared with a 25 micron pore-former were better than state-of-the-art electrodes in terms of efficienty and/or mechanical strength. The 60% structures were particularly outstanding in this respect in that they had efficiencies only 5-10 percentage points lower than state-of-the-art electrodes and vastly superior mechanical properties. This added strength was observed to eliminate cracking and physical degradation of the electrodes during processing and cycling. The cadmium electrodes prepared from the 80% porous substrates proved to be the best electrodes made during the course of the work from the point of view of highest efficiency. Three-point bend tests were used to measure mechanical properties of the plaques produced and also as a general characterization tool. In addition, the BET surface areas of selected specimens was determined. The SEM was used for judging microscopic uniformity and quantitatively determining the induced pore size and various other fine structures in the substrates. The technique of X-ray radiography was used to follow the bulk uniformity of the substrates at various stages of their processing.

Nongassing nickel-cadmium battery electrodes and cells

The failure of nickel-cadmium storage batteries due to severe gassing during charging is discussed. In order to increase the life of such cells, nongassing positive and negative electrodes are used. The gassing characteristics of nickel electrodes were evaluated as a function of their loading, charge rate, and charge temperature.

Oxidation and thermal fatigue of coated and uncoated NX-188 nickel-base alloy in a high velocity gas stream

A cast nickel-base superalloy, NX-188, coated and uncoated, was tested in a high-velocity gas stream for resistance to oxidation and thermal fatigue by cycling between room temperature and 980, 1040, and 1090 C. Contrary to the behavior of more conventional nickel-base alloys, uncoated NX-188 exhibited the greatest weight loss at the lowest test temperature. In general, on the basis of weight change and metallographic observations a coating consisting of vapor-deposited Fe-Cr-Al-Y over a chromized substrate exhibited the best overall performance in resistance to oxidation and thermal fatigue.
