Nb$_3$Sn Superconducting Radiofrequency Cavities: a Maturing Technology for Particle Accelerators and Detectors

Nb3Sn superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) cavities have substantial potential for enabling new performance capabilities for particle accelerators for high energy physics (HEP), as well as for RF cavity-based detectors for dark matter, gravitational waves, and other quantum sensing applications. Outside of HEP, Nb3Sn SRF cavities can also benefit accelerators for nuclear physics, basic energy sciences, and the industry. In this contribution to Snowmass 2021, we overview the potential, status, and outlook of Nb3Sn SRF cavities.

Visual, Optical and Replica Inspections: Surface Preparation of 650 MHz NB Cavity for PIP-II Linac

Surface preparation of niobium superconducting RF cavities is a critical step for achieving good RF performance under the superconducting state. Surface defect, roughness, and contamination affect the accelerating gradient and quality factor of the cavities. We report surface inspection methods used to control the surface processing of 650 MHz cavities designated for the pre-production and prototype cryomodules for PIP-II linac. The cavity surface was routinely inspected visually, with an optical camera, and by microscopic scanning of surface replicas. This article covers details on the surface inspection methods and surface polishing process used to repair the surface.

Microstructural Characterization of Nb$_3$Sn Thin Films Using FIB Tomography

The accelerating gradient of N b3Sn superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) cavities is currently limited, and the underlying cause remains an open question in the field. One leading hypothesis attributes this limitation to the presence of tin-deficient regions within the N b3Sn coating, which can suppress the superheating field. Due to the relatively large coherence length of N b3Sn, defects near the surface may significantly interact with the RF field. However, these subsurface defects have proven difficult to characterize. This research aims to investigate the structure and distribution of subsurface Sn deficient regions to better understand their influence on cavity performance. We employ focused ion beam (FIB) tomography to analyze the subsurface microstructure of N b3Sn thin films. This technique enables threedimensional reconstruction of both the tin distribution and the grain structure within the film. By correlating Sn content with grain structure, we find that Sn deficient regions are more prevalent that previously thought. However, the Sn deficient regions are consistently located below the surface of the film where RF fields are strongly attenuated by supercurrent screening and are likely not a limiting factor for cavity performance

Magneto-optical study of Nb thin films for superconducting qubits

Among the recognized sources of decoherence in superconducting qubits, the spatial inhomogeneity of the superconducting state and the possible presence of magnetic-flux vortices remain comparatively underexplored. Niobium is commonly used as a structural material in transmon qubits that host Josephson junctions, and excess dissipation anywhere in the transmon can become a bottleneck that limits overall quantum performance. The metal/substrate interfacial layer may simultaneously host pair-breaking loss channels (e.g., two-level systems, TLS) and control thermal transport, thereby affecting dissipation and temperature stability. Here, we use quantitative magneto-optical imaging of the magnetic-flux distribution to characterize the homogeneity of the superconducting state and the critical current density, $j_{c}$, in niobium films fabricated under different sputtering conditions. The imaging reveals distinct flux-penetration regimes, ranging from a nearly ideal Bean critical state to strongly nonuniform thermo-magnetic dendritic avalanches. By fitting the measured magnetic-induction profiles, we extract $j_{c}$ and correlate it with film physical properties and with measured qubit internal quality factors. Our results indicate that the Nb/Si interlayer can be a significant contributor to decoherence and should be considered an important factor that must be optimized.

Understanding the Role of Extrinsic Impurities in Bulk Nb SRF Cavities

High gradient and high quality factor superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) cavities are essential for efficient particle acceleration in next-generation accelerators. This work demonstrates that the superconducting performance of bulk niobium can be enhanced through a controlled introduction of interstitial oxygen and nitrogen. Thermal and chemical surface treatments modify the concentration and distribution of these impurities, enabling systematic tuning of SRF cavity performance. By combining cavity RF measurements with quantitative materials characterizations, we isolate the impact of impurity concentration on BCS surface resistance and identify the mechanisms by which interstitial impurities alter the superconducting properties of niobium. We find that nitrogen is an order of magnitude more effective than oxygen in reducing BCS resistance at 16 MV/m and that the reduction arises from a combination of mean free path optimization and superconducting gap enhancement. Using these insights, we develop a predictive model that estimates cavity performance directly from room temperature sample material studies, reducing the reliance on full-scale cryogenic tests for surface treatment development. We then apply this model to explore co-doping strategies, demonstrating that combining interstitial oxygen and nitrogen achieves a synergistic reduction in BCS resistance. These results establish co-doping as a viable path for the development of surface-engineered niobium for future high quality factor SRF applications.
