Short-interval estimations of trigonometric parallaxes

A technique for estimating trigonometric parallaxes in a matter of days or weeks is presented. The technique relies on the discrepancy between the instantaneous proper motion and the proper motion of a star. The main sources of error in the method are the standard error of the individual observations (0.004 arcsec) and the arbitrary limit placed on the observation interval. The parallactic motion of an MO dwarf of known parallax and a blue magnitude of 11.2 is determined. The slope inferred is within 10 percent of the value (0.555 arcsec) derived from a 1.5-year study of Barnard's star. It is concluded that the technique, if used on the same time scale as conventional techniques, would yield results of much higher accuracy.

The mechanism of erosion of metallic materials under cavitation attack

The mean depth of penetration rates (MDPRs) of eight polycrystalline metallic materials, Al 6061-T6, Cu, brass, phosphor bronze, Ni, Fe, Mo, and Ti-5Al-2.5Sn exposed to cavitation attack in a viscous mineral oil with a 20 kHz ultrasonic oscillator vibrating at 50 micron amplitude are reported. The titanium alloy followed by molybdenum have large incubation periods and small MDPRs. The incubation periods correlate linearly with the inverse of hardness and the average MDPRs correlate linearly with the inverse of tensile strength of materials. The linear relationships yield better statistical parameters than geometric and exponential relationships. The surface roughness and the ratio of pit depth to pit width (h/a) increase with the duration of cavitation attack. The ratio h/a varies from 0.1 to 0.8 for different materials. Recent investigations (20) using scanning electron microscopy to study deformation and pit formation features are briefly reviewed. Investigations with single crystals indicate that the geometry of pits and erosion are dependent on their orientation.

NTF: Soldering Technology Development for Cryogenics

The advent of the National Transonic Facility (NTF) brought about a new application for an old joining method, soldering. Soldering for use at cryogenic temperatures requires that solders remain ductile and free from tin-pest (grey tin), have toughness to withstand aerodynamic loads associated with flight research, and maintain their surface finishes. Solders are used to attach 347 Stainless-Steel tubing in surface grooves of models. The solder must fill up the gap and metallurgically bound to the tubing and model. Cryogenic temperatures require that only specific materials for models can be used, including: Vasco Max 200 CVM, lescalloy A-286 Vac Arc, pH 13-8 Mo. Solders identified for testing at this time are: 50% Sn - 49.5% Pb - 0.5% Sb, 95% Sn - 5% Sb, 50% In 50% Pb, and 37.5% Sn - 37.5% Pb - 25% In. With these materials and solders, it is necessary to determine their solderability. After solderability is determined, tube/groove specimens are fabricated and stressed under cryogenic temperatures. Compatible solders are then used for acutual models.

Japan's participation in space station design: Feasibility study of GaAs solar cells for space station applications

The report gives the results of feasibility studies and a cost analysis done on GaAs solar battery cells for space stations. The studies and their results are as follows: (1) Cell size - The 2 x 4 cm cell size was found superior to the 4 x 4 cm cell; (2) Manufacturing technology - Overall, LPE crystal growth was found more suitable than MO-CVD. Current technology for post-growth processes and applying large-area cover glass can be used with few or no modifications; (3) Cell assemblies - Tests for mechanical and thermal stresses encountered from assembly through operation are recommended; (4) Procuring materials - Steps should be taken to avoid sharp price increases due to a speculative gallium market. There are no problems with arsenic materials; (5) Production facilities - The capital investment needed remains to be determined, but a working area of 4000 m2 will be required; (6) Cell costs to be determined; (7) Cell development-supply plan - Two-year lead time will be needed to develop the necessary technology and prepare for production.

Compressive creep behavior of alloys based on B2 FeAl

Alloys based on FeAl are attractive alternate materials for environmental resistance at intermediate temperatures. Addition of small amounts of Nb, Hf, Ta, Mo, Zr, and B were shown to improve the compressive creep of this alloy at 1100 K. Boron, in particular, was found to have a synergistic effect along with Zr in providing properties substantially better than the binary alloy. This improvement seems to be related to the higher activation energy found for this alloy, suggesting a modification in the diffusion behavior due to the alloying additions.

Integral processing in beyond-Hartree-Fock calculations

The increasing rate at which improvements in processing capacity outstrip improvements in input/output performance of large computers has led to recent attempts to bypass generation of a disk-based integral file. The direct self-consistent field (SCF) method of Almlof and co-workers represents a very successful implementation of this approach. This paper is concerned with the extension of this general approach to configuration interaction (CI) and multiconfiguration-self-consistent field (MCSCF) calculations. After a discussion of the particular types of molecular orbital (MO) integrals for which -- at least for most current generation machines -- disk-based storage seems unavoidable, it is shown how all the necessary integrals can be obtained as matrix elements of Coulomb and exchange operators that can be calculated using a direct approach. Computational implementations of such a scheme are discussed.

Thermal regimes in the detachment fault environment as deduced from fluid inclusions

Extensional tectonism, which dominates middle- and late-Tertiary geology in western Arizona, southeastern California, and southern Nevada, is characterized by normal regionally extensive, low-angle detachment faults. The decollement movement of Fupper plate rocks relative to lower plate assemblages created extensive zones of dilatency, including synthetic and antithetic listric normal faults, tear faults, tectonic crush breccias, shatter breccias, and gash veins in lithologic units above and below the detachment. The tectonically enhanced permeability above and below the detachment fault permitted mass migration of large volumes of hydrothermal solutions along the fault zone during and following upper plate movement. Major quantities of MgO, CaO, K2O, FeO/Fe2O3, SiO2 and CO2 were added to rocks in and near the detachment and related structures. Also introduced were varying amounts of trace elements including Mn, Cu, S, Mo, Ba, Au, Pb, Zn, U and/or Ag. Minerals containing fluid incusions were collected from all of these loci at locations in detachment faulted terranes in western Arizona and southeastern California.

The effect of variations of cobalt content on the cyclic oxidation resistance of selected Ni-base superalloys

Cobalt levels were systematically varied in the Ni-base turbine alloys U-700 (cast), U-700m(PM/HIP), Waspaloy, Mar-M-247, In-738, Nimonic-115, U-720, and SX-R-150. The cobalt levels ranged from 0 wt % to the nominal commercial content in each alloy. The alloys were tested in cyclic oxidation in static air at 1000, 1100 and 1150 C for 500, 200 and 100 hr respectively. An oxidation attack parameter, Ka derived from the specific weight change versus time data was used to evaluate the oxidation behavior of the alloys along with X-ray diffraction analysis of the surface oxides. The alloys tend to form either Cr2O3/chromite spinel or Al2O3/aluminate spinel depending on the CR/Al ratio in the alloys. Alloys with a ratio of 3.5 or higher tend to favor the Cr oxides while those under 3.0 form mostly Al oxides. In general the Al2O3/aluminate spinel forming alloys have the better oxidation resistance. Increased cobalt content lowers the scaling resistance of the higher Cr alloys while a 5.0 wt % Co content is optimum for the Al controlling alloys. The refractory metals, particularly Ta, appear beneficial to both types of oxides perhaps due to the formation of the omni-present trirutile Ni(Ta,Cb,Mo,W)2O6. Both scales break down as increasing amounts of NiO is formed.

The development of gamma-gamma-prime lamellar structures in a nickel-base superalloy during elevated temperature mechanical testing

The kinetics of the formation and subsequent development of the directional coarsening of the gamma-prime precipitate in model Ni-Al-Mo-Ta superalloy single crystals are examined during tensile creep under various stress levels at 982 and 1038 C. Special attention is given to the gamma and gamma-prime relation to creep time and strain in order to trace the changing gamma-gamma-prime morphology. Directional coarsening of gamma-prime is found to begin during primary creep and its rate is shown to increase with an increase in temperature or stress level. The length of gamma-prime thickness increased linearly with time up to a plateau reached after the onset of steady state creep. The raft thickness, equal to the gamma-prime size, remained constant at this initial value up through the onset of the tertiary creep. The interlaminar spacing indicates the stability of directionally coarsened structure.

Aspects of the 40-50 day oscillation during the northern winter as inferred from outgoing longwave radiation

One-point correlation statistics and extended empirical orthogonal function analysis are used to show the existence of a principal mode of oscillation in the intraseasonal variability (ISV) of tropical convection. The data analyzed were derived from NOAA Outgoing Longwave Radiation data covering seven 6 mo periods from 1974-83. The data is filtered to remove fluctuations on time scales under 5 days and by subtracting a least-squares parabola to eliminate seasonal means. The previously-known 40-50 day oscillation is found to be the most prevalent component of the ISV of tropical convection. An E-W dipole forms and propagates over the equatorial Indian Ocean, then stalls and intensifies over Indonesia and the equatorial Indian Ocean, then stalls and intensifies over Indonesia and the equatorial central Pacific. Various anomalies generated in association with the dipole and dependent on its exact location when stalled are discussed.

Effect of multiple strain-anneal cycles on the 1000 C creep behaviour of gamma/gamma prime-alpha

Various multiple strain-anneal cycles (1000 C) were imposed on specimens of the directionally solidified eutectic (DSE) alloy gamma/gamma prime-alpha to identify thermomechanical processing methods (TMP) which would improve the creep behavior. Specimens of the Ni-32.3Mo-6.3Al wt pct alloy were grown with a modified Bridgeman technique. Some of the cylindrical specimens were alternately heat-treated at 900 C, then strained, or heat-treated only, while other specimens were annealed at 900 C after swaging and then worked at ambient temperature. The specimens were all examined microstructurally using transmission electron microscopy, some before and after being exposed to constant-load compression tests at 1000 C. The creep strain increased for all TMP specimens for strain rates of at least 2 millionths per sec. Strain rates of about 2 ten millionths per sec were only improved with strain annealing with 13 percent work at ambient temperature. A slight improvement, compared to as-grown materials, was observed in the 1000 C creep behavior of materials annealed at 900 C. Strain-annealing was found to introduce three-dimensional dislocation networks into the gamma-prime matrix.

High temperature properties of equiatomic FeAl with ternary additions

The aluminide intermetallic compounds are considered potential structural materials for aerospace applications. The B2 binary aluminide FeAl has a melting point in excess of 1500 K, is of simple cubic structure, exists over a wide range of composition with solubility for third elements and is potentially self-protecting in extreme environments. The B2 FeAl compound has been alloyed with 1 to 5 at. pct ternary additions of Si, Ti, Zr, Hf, Cr, Ni, Co, Nb, Ta, Mo, W, and Re. The alloys were prepared by blending a third elemental powder with pre-alloyed binary FeAl powder. Consolidation was by hot extrusion at 1250 K. Annealing studies on the extruded rods showed that the third element addition can be classified into three categories based upon the amount of homogenization and the extent of solid solutioning. Constant strain rate compression tests were performed to determine the flow stress as a function of temperature and composition. The mechanical strength behavior was dependent upon the third element homogenization classification.

Orientation and temperature dependence of some mechanical properties of the single-crystal nickel-base superalloy Rene N4. I - Tensile behavior

Single crystal specimens of a nickel-base superalloy with axes near 001, 011, and -112 were tested in tension at room temperature, 760, and 980 C. The alloy Rene N-4, was developed for gas turbine engine blades and has the nominal composition 3.7 Al, 4.2 Ti, 4 Ta, 0.5 Nb, 6 W, 1.5 Mo, 9 Cr, 7.5 Co, balance Ni, (all in weight percent). Analysis of slip band traces, specimen axis rotation, and dislocation Burgers vectors showed that at 760 and 980 C primary cube slip supplanted normal octahedral slip for the -112 line-oriented specimens. The other two orientations, which have lower resolved shear stresses on the cube system, exhibited octahedral slip at all three temperatures. The critical resolved shear stress is considerably greater on the cube system than on the octahedral system at room temperature. However, at 760 and 980 C the critical resolved shear stresses on the two systems are about the same. While the room temperature and 980 C yield strengths for the two orientations exhibiting octahedral slip could be rationalized on the basis of resolved shear stress, those at 760 C could not. Such violations of Schmid's law have previously been observed in other superalloys and single phase gamma-prime.

A study of the microstructure of a rapidly solidified nickel-base superalloy modified with boron

The microstructures of melt-spun superalloy ribbons with variable boron levels have been studied by transmission electron microscopy. The base alloy was of approximate composition Ni-11% Cr-5%Mo-5%Al-4%Ti with boron levels of 0.06, 0.12, and 0.60 percent (all by weight). Thirty micron thick ribbons display an equiaxed chill zone near the wheel contact side which develops into primary dendrite arms in the ribbon center. Secondary dendrite arms are observed near the ribbon free surface. In the higher boron bearing alloys, boride precipitates are observed along grain boundaries. A concerted effort has been made to elucidate true grain shapes by the use of bright field/dark field microscopy. In the low boron alloy, grain shapes are often convex, and grain faces are flat. Boundary faces frequently have large curvature, and grain shapes form concave polygons in the higher boron level alloys. It is proposed that just after solidification, in all of the alloys studied, grain shapes were initially concave and boundaries were wavy. Boundary straightening is presumed to occur on cooling in the low boron alloy. Boundary migration is precluded in the higher boron alloys by fast precipitation of borides at internal interfaces.

An analysis of doping modulated superlattice structures

A new method of growing doping modulated superlattice structures is discussed. This method uses organo-metallic chemical vapor deposition (MO-CVD) with the added feature of controlled plasma in the growth regions. The main objective was to study how the growth environment affected the electronic and optical properties of the superlattice structures. Because a serious safety hazard was discovered in the growth process, no superlattice structures were fabricated and the research on this material had to be terminated. The hazard had to do with the lack of adequate means for the disposal of toxic elemental beryllium.

Heat treatment for superalloy

A cobalt-free nickel-base superalloy composed of in weight % 15 Cr-5 Mo-3.5 Ti-4 Al-0.07 (max) C-remainder Ni is given a modified heat treatment. With this heat treatment the cobalt-free alloy achieves certain of the mechanical properties of the corresponding cobalt-containing nickel-base superalloy at 1200 F (650 C). Thus, strategic cobalt can be replaced by nickel in the alloy.

The role of oxygen in porous molybdenum electrodes for the alkali metal thermoelectric converter

A model for chemical reactions in porous molybdenum electrodes is presented which is based on thermochemical and kinetic data, known sodium-molybdenum-oxygen chemistry, X-ray diffraction analysis of molybdenum and molybdenum oxide electrodes, and the electrochemical behavior of the cell. Enhanced sodium transport through the electrode in its optimum performance state is found to be due to the high sodium ion conductivity of molten Na2MoO4 in the pores, and the electrical conduction to the molybdenum matrix by Na2Mo3O6. The decline of electrode performance is shown to be due to a combination of loss mechanisms for the Na-Mo-O compounds including reduction at short circuit, disproportionation of Na2Mo3O6 at open circuit, and the evaporation of Na2MoO4 at elevated temperature. It is suggested that operation of the cell at moderate voltage of about 0.5 V corresponding to maximum power may be a more stable condition for the porous electrode than open-circuit stand or short-circuit, where degradation reactions are heightened.

Observing Halley from Venus

During the 3 mo of perihelion passage of Comet Halley in 1985 and 1986, the Pioneer Venus Orbiter was diverted from its normal role of collecting Venus science, and operated as a platform for ultraviolet and solar-wind observations of the comet. This paper describes the unusal features of the planning, and the special problems encountered in order to observe the comet.
