Expansion of Tabulated Scattering Matrices in Generalized Spherical Functions

An efficient way to solve the vector radiative transfer equation for plane-parallel turbid media is to Fourier-decompose it in azimuth. This methodology is typically based on the analytical computation of the Fourier components of the phase matrix and is predicated on the knowledge of the coefficients appearing in the expansion of the normalized scattering matrix in generalized spherical functions. Quite often the expansion coefficients have to be determined from tabulated values of the scattering matrix obtained from measurements or calculated by solving the Maxwell equations. In such cases one needs an efficient and accurate computer procedure converting a tabulated scattering matrix into the corresponding set of expansion coefficients. This short communication summarizes the theoretical basis of this procedure and serves as the user guide to a simple public-domain FORTRAN program.

The J and K Dependencies of the Line Coupling and Line Mixing Effects: Theoretical Studies of the Relaxation Matrices of N 2 -Broadened Ch 3 D

Line coupling and line mixing effects in parallel and perpendicular bands of CH 3 D perturbed by N 2 have been studied. The work focuses on exhibiting the j and k dependencies of these two processes. The calculations were based on a previously reported anisotropic intermolecular potential including both the long-range multipole, induction, and dispersion forces and a short-range atom-atom model. It is shown that components with L 1 = 3 of the atom-atom model are dominant contributions to the diffusion operator. As a consequence, in comparison with other molecular systems such as the CH 3 Cl-N 2 and CH 3 I-N 2 , theoretically predicted line coupling and line mixing effects exhibit completely new j and k dependencies. In general, the theoretically calculated halfwidths and intra-doublets’ off-diagonal elements of the relaxation matrix are in reasonable agreement with measurements.

Shape Estimation for Elongated Deformable Object using B-spline Chained Multiple Random Matrices Model

In this paper, a B-spline chained multiple random matrix models (RMMs) representation is proposed to model geometric characteristics of an elongated deformable object. The hyper degrees of freedom structure of the elongated deformable object make its shape estimation challenging. Based on the likelihood function of the proposed B-spline chained multiple RMMs, an expectation-maximization (EM) method is derived to estimate the shape of the elongated deformable object. A split and merge method based on the Euclidean minimum spanning tree (EMST) is proposed to provide initialization for the EM algorithm. The proposed algorithm is evaluated for the shape estimation of the elongated deformable objects in scenarios, such as the static rope with various configurations (including configurations with intersection), the continuous manipulation of a rope and a plastic tube, and the assembly of two plastic tubes. The execution time is computed and the accuracy of the shape estimation results is evaluated based on the comparisons between the estimated width values and its ground-truth, and the intersection over union (IoU) metric.

Evaluation of Hydrolytic Degradation of Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) Matrices in Compression Molded Flax/PLA Composites

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a bio-based plastic that is an attractive alternative to its petroleum-based counterparts because of its high strength and ease of thermal processing. In an effort to reduce the carbon footprint of fossil-fuel based polymer matrix composites, PLA along with naturally-occurring fibers are being explored to produce entirely bio-based replacements. Challenges in producing these composites occur due to the water affinity of the natural fibers and the susceptibility of the PLA to hydrolytic degradation. Hydrolysis of PLA occurs at elevated processing temperatures and can further be accelerated by the presence of water contained in the natural fibers. This talk will discuss the challenges and considerations associated with processing PLA in the presence of water-absorbing flax fibers to produce composites via compression molding. The thermal, physical, and mechanical properties of PLA/flax composites will be characterized at various processing times in an effort to identify optimal manufacturing conditions.

Biobased Polybenzoxazine Derived from Furfurylamine and Piceol with Low Cure Temperature and Advanced Properties for Composite Matrices

A novel benzoxazine made from furfurylamine, paraformaldehyde, and piceol, Bz-FA-HA, is assessed for applications in fiber reinforced (FR) composites. Piceol is a biobased phenolic compound derived from the roots of Norwegian spruce trees and contains a methyl ketone group at the para position. Bz-FA-HA is a liquid at room temperature, has a viscosity of < 1 Pa.s at temperatures above 90 °C, and a Tonset of cure at 132 °C. The carbonyl is found to react with the furan ring, yielding a crosslinking reaction, when cured above 180 °C as indicated by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis coupled with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Poly(Bz-FA-HA) has a Tg > 350 °C, attributed to the crosslinking reaction. Furthermore, the storage modulus is > 3 GPa, regardless of cure temperature. Poly(Bz-FA-HA) has a char yield at 800 °C of 65.0 % (62.3 % at 1000 °C), and a Tonset of decomposition of 357 °C in nitrogen. The resulting carbon formed during pyrolysis shrinks during the carbonization reaction and scanning electron microscopy imaging shows a cross-section with micro cracks. The high processability, advanced mechanical properties, and exceptional char yield make it a promising candidate as the matrix for FR composites.

Reply to: How much does corrosion of nuclear waste matrices matter

We thank Mallants and Chapman for their comments on our recent work and are mostly in agreement. However, while the applicability of the results to different environmental conditions requires more attention, we maintain that this study could be relevant even to repositories in saturated reduced environments. Oxidants other than oxygen might be present in anoxic groundwater repository environments and could also trigger the corrosion mechanism we described. .

Milestone 2.7: Evaluation of Techniques for the Measurement of Molecular Hydrogen Gas in Helium Matrices

Published data by Task 2 (Oxyhydroxide Layer Radiolytic Gas Generation Resolution) for Technical Considerations and Challenges for Extended (>50 yrs) Dry Storage of Aluminum Cladded Spent Nuclear Fuel (ASNF), demonstrated that radiolytic molecular hydrogen (H2) production from gamma irradiated aluminum alloy 1100 (Al-1100) coupons exhibited significant dependence on backfill gaseous environment conditions: air, due to the presence of oxygen, completely inhibited H2 production; nitrogen promoted H2 production; and argon yielded more H2 than nitrogen environments. The concern here is that helium has been proposed as the backfill gas for extended storage and is more inert than argon, which may translate into significantly more H2 production than current Task 3 argon-based models predict. However, the measurement of H2 in helium media was not possible using the previously establish gas chromatography (GC) flame ionization detector, due to similarities in thermal conductivity. This milestone was initiated to evaluate an alternative GC approach that employed a mercuric oxide (HgO) reduction gas detector (RGD). Using the HgO RGD setup, H2 was successfully calibrated in the presence of a helium carrier gas, and then subsequently measured in control and irradiated crush-tube sample vials, consistent with previous sample measurements. Overall, the HgO RGD approach was found to be sufficient for future helium environment irradiations.
