Testing for pair density wave order in La 1.875 Ba 0.125 CuO 4

We report charge order is commonly believed to compete with superconducting order. An intertwined form of a superconducting wave function, known as pair density wave (PDW) order, has been proposed; however, direct evidence, theoretical or experimental, that it forms the ground state of any cuprate superconductor is lacking. As a test case, we consider La 2-x Ba x CuO 4 with x = 1/8, where charge and spin stripe orders within the CuO 2 planes compete with three-dimensional superconducting order. We report measurements of the superconducting critical current perpendicular to the planes in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field. The variation of the critical current with orientation of the field is inconsistent with a theoretical prediction specific to the PDW model. It appears, instead, that the orientation dependence of the critical-current density might be determined by a minority phase of d-wave superconductivity that is present as a consequence of doped-charge inhomogeneity.

Strongly-overdoped $\mathrm{La}$ 2- $_{x}$$\mathrm{Sr}$$_{x}$$\mathrm{CuO}$ 4 : Evidence for Josephson-coupled grains of strongly-correlated superconductor

The interpretation of how superconductivity disappears in cuprates at large hole doping has been controversial. To address this issue, here we present an experimental study of single-crystal and thin film samples of La 2-x Sr x CuO 4 (LSCO) with x ≥0.25. In particular, measurements of bulk susceptibility on LSCO crystals with x = 0.25 indicate an onset of diamagnetism at T c1 =38.5 K, with a sharp transition to a phase with full bulk shielding at T c2 =18 K, independent of field direction. Strikingly, the in-plane resistivity only goes to zero at T c2 . Inelastic neutron scattering on 0.25 crystals confirms the presence of low-energy incommensurate magnetic excitations with reduced strength compared to lower doping levels. The ratio of the spin gap to T c2 is anomalously large. Our results are consistent with a theoretical prediction for strongly overdoped cuprates by Spivak, Oreto, and Kivelson, in which superconductivity initially develops within disconnected self-organized grains characterized by a reduced hole concentration, with bulk superconductivity occurring only after superconductivity is induced by proximity effect in the surrounding medium of higher hole concentration. Beyond the superconducting-to-metal transition, local differential conductance measurements on an LSCO thin film suggest that regions with pairing correlations survive, but are too dilute to support superconducting order. Future experiments will be needed to test the degree to which these results apply to overdoped cuprates in general.

Two types of superconducting pairs in stripe-ordered La 2 - x Ba x CuO 4 ( x = 1 / 8 ) : Evidence from resistivity measurements

Recent angle-resolved c-axis resistivity measurements of the stripe-ordered La 2-x Ba x CuO 4 (LBCO) with x = 1/8 revealed an unexpected dependence on the direction of the in-plane magnetic field. We argue that these and other available data for the c-axis transport point to the existence of superconducting pairs of two different types in the x = 1/8 LBCO below the stripe ordering temperature. The pairs of one type carry finite momentum and are confined to the Cu-O planes; the pairs of other type (probably the conventional d wave with zero momentum) propagate along narrow conducting channels traversing the sample in the c-axis direction. The evidence for this comes from the observed exponential temperature dependence of the c-axis resistivity ρ c (T ) which we attribute to the thermally excited slips of the superconducting phase and flux flows. We present a simple theory to fit the observed π/2-periodic dependence of ρ c on the direction of the in-plane magnetic field and the other data.

Spin canting and lattice symmetry in La 2 CuO 4

While the dominant magnetic interaction in La 2 CuO 4 is superexchange between nearest-neighbor Cu moments, the pinning of the spin direction depends on weak anisotropic effects associated with spin-orbit coupling. The symmetry of the octahedral tilt pattern allows an out-of-plane canting of the Cu spins, which is compensated by an opposite canting in nearest-neighbor layers. A strong magnetic field applied perpendicular to the planes can alter the spin canting pattern to induce a weak ferromagnetic phase. In light of recent evidence that the lattice symmetry is lower than originally assumed, we take another look at the nature of the field-induced spin-rotation transition. Comparing low-temperature neutron diffraction intensities for several magnetic Bragg peaks measured in fields of 0 and 14 T, we find that a better fit is provided by a model in which spins rotate within both neighboring planes but by different amounts, resulting in a noncollinear configuration. Finally, this model allows a more consistent relationship between lattice symmetry and spin orientation at all Cu sites.

Precise ${dd}$ excitations and commensurate intersite Coulomb interactions in the dissimilar cuprates YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7–y and La 2–x Sr x CuO 4

Using high-resolution extreme ultraviolet resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (EUVRIXS) spectroscopy at Cu M-edge, we observed the doping dependent spectral shifts of inter-orbital (${dd}$) excitations of YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-y and La 2-x Sr x CuO 4 . With increasing hole doping level from undoped to optimally doped superconducting compositions, the leading edge of ${dd}$ excitations is found to shift towards lower energy loss in a roughly linear trend that is irrespective to the cuprate species. The magnitude of energy shift can be explained by including a 0.15 eV Coulomb attraction between Cu 3d(x 2 -y 2 ) electrons and the doped holes on the surrounding oxygens in the atomic multiplet calculations. Finally, the consistent energy shift between distinct cuprate families suggests that this inter-site Coulomb interaction energy scale is relatively material-independent, and provides an important reference point for understanding charge density wave phenomena in the cuprate phase diagram.

Local lattice distortions and electronic orders in strongly correlated systems by resonant total x-ray scattering: A case study of A Pt 2 X 2 intermetallics ( A = U , Ce, or La and X = Si or Ge)

Revealing local lattice distortions in physical systems is nontrivial, largely because such structural features often are not necessarily amenable to traditional crystallographic investigations. This poses limits to our understanding of the underlying physic, particularly in the case of strongly correlated systems where structural, electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom are intertwined. Using resonant total x-ray scattering coupled to differential pair distribution function analysis, we reveal the presence of pronounced local lattice distortions in the square net Pt planes in the prototypical strongly correlated APt 2 X 2 intermetallics (A = U, Ce or La and X = Si or Ge). The distortions are present before charge density wave, magnetic, Kondo lattice coherence and/or superconducting orders emerge in these materials and, as density functional calculations suggest, are likely to affect them. Finally, our study sheds light on the poorly known interactions between electronic orders and structural disorder in strongly correlated systems and also demonstrates an advanced experimental approach to determine it that is relevant to any physical system showing deviations from perfect crystallinity.

Electronic structure, dimer physics, orbital-selective behavior, and magnetic tendencies in the bilayer nickelate superconductor $\mathrm{La_3Ni_2O_7}$under pressure

Motivated by the recently reported high-temperature superconductivity in the bilayer La 3 Ni 2 O 7 (LNO) under pressure, we comprehensively study this system using ab initio techniques. The Ni 3d orbitals have a large bandwidth at ambient pressure, increasing by ~22% at 29.5 GPa. Without electronic interactions, the Ni d 3z 2 -r 2 orbitals form a bonding-antibonding molecular orbital state via the O p z inducing a “dimer” lattice in the LNO bilayers. The Fermi surface consists of two-electron sheets with mixed e g orbitals and a hole pocket defined by the d 3z 2 -r 2 orbital, suggesting a Ni two-orbital minimum model. Different from the infinite-layer nickelate, we obtained a large interorbital hopping between d 3z 2 -r 2 and d x 2 -y 2 states in LNO, caused by the ligand “bridge” of in-plane O p x or p y orbitals connecting those two orbitals, inducing d-p σ-bonding characteristics. The competition between the intraorbital and interorbital hoppings leads to an interesting dominant spin stripe (π,0) order because of bond ferromagnetic tendencies via the recently discussed “half-empty” mechanism.

Random fields from quenched disorder in an archetype for correlated electrons: The parallel spin stripe phase of La 1.6 – x Nd 0.4 Sr x CuO 4 at the 1/8 anomaly

The parallel stripe phase is remarkable both in its own right, and in relation to the other phases with which it coexists. Its inhomogeneous nature makes such states susceptible to random fields from quenched magnetic vacancies. Here we argue this is the case by introducing low concentrations of nonmagnetic Zn impurities (0%–10%) into La 1.6–x ⁢Nd 0.4⁢ Sr x ⁢CuO 4 (Nd-LSCO) with x=0.125 in single-crystal form, well below the percolation threshold of ~41% for a two-dimensional square lattice. Elastic neutron scattering measurements on these crystals show clear magnetic quasi-Bragg peaks at all Zn dopings. While all the Zn-doped crystals display order parameters that merge into each other and the background at ~68 K, the temperature dependence of the order parameter as a function of Zn concentration is drastically different. This result is consistent with meandering charge stripes within the parallel stripe phase, which are pinned in the presence of quenched magnetic vacancies. In turn it implies vacancies that preferentially occupy sites within the charge stripes, and hence that can be very effective at disrupting superconductivity in Nd-LSCO (x=0.125), and, by extension, in all systems exhibiting parallel stripes.

From nonmetal to strange metal at the stripe-percolation transition in La 2 - x Sr x CuO 4

The nature of the normal state of cuprate superconductors continues to stimulate considerable speculation. Of particular interest has been the linear temperature dependence of the in-plane resistivity in the low-temperature limit, which violates the prediction for a Fermi liquid. We present measurements of anisotropic resistivity in La$_{2–x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ that confirm the strange-metal behavior for crystals with doped-hole concentration $p = x > p^* \sim 0.19$ and contrast with the nonmetallic behavior for $p < p^*$. We propose that the changes at $p^*$ are associated with a first-order transition from doped Mott insulator to conventional metal; the transition appears as a crossover due to intrinsic dopant disorder. We consider results from the literature that support this picture; in particular, we present a simulation of the impact of the disorder on the first-order transition and the doping dependence of stripe correlations. Below $p^*$, the strong electronic interactions result in charge and spin stripe correlations that percolate across the CuO 2 planes; above $p^*$, residual stripe correlations are restricted to isolated puddles. Here we suggest that the $T$-linear resistivity results from scattering of quasiparticles from antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations within the correlated puddles. This is a modest effect compared to the case at $p < p^*$, where the data suggest that there are no coherent quasiparticles in the normal state.

Coexistence of low and high spin states in La 18 Co 28 Pb 3

The electronic structure and magnetic properties of a newly predicted stable ternary compound La 18 ⁢Co 28 ⁢Pb 3 are studied using electronic structure analysis. The ground state of this compound is ferromagnetic, with three positions of nonequivalent magnetic Co atoms. A strong dependence of magnetic properties on volume shows that this system is situated near the point of magnetic instability. The coexistence of high- and low-spin ferromagnetic states as a function of volume near equilibrium was discovered. A corresponding spin tunneling splitting was estimated. The stability of the theoretically predicted magnetic ground state was tested by varying the Hubbard parameter. The thermal spin fluctuations were added to estimate the paramagnetic moment and a Curie temperature. Finally, the necessity of experimental verification of the obtained results is emphasized.

Strongly Correlated Charge Density Wave in La 2 – x Sr x CuO 4 Evidenced by Doping-Dependent Phonon Anomaly

The discovery of charge-density-wave-related effects in the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra of cuprates holds the tantalizing promise of clarifying the interactions that stabilize the electronic order. In this paper, we report a comprehensive resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of La 2 – x Sr x CuO 4 finding that charge-density wave effects persist up to a remarkably high doping level of x = 0.21 before disappearing at x = 0.25 . The inelastic excitation spectra remain essentially unchanged with doping despite crossing a topological transition in the Fermi surface. This indicates that the spectra contain little or no direct coupling to electronic excitations near the Fermi surface, rather they are dominated by the resonant cross section for phonons and charge-density-wave-induced phonon softening. We interpret our results in terms of a charge-density wave that is generated by strong correlations and a phonon response that is driven by the charge-density-wave-induced modification of the lattice.

Enhanced Electron-Phonon Coupling for Charge-Density-Wave Formation in La 1.8-$x$ Eu 0.2 Sr $x$ CuO 4+$δ$

Charge density wave (CDW) correlations are prevalent in all copper-oxide superconductors. While CDWs in conventional metals are driven by coupling between lattice vibrations and electrons, the role of the electron-phonon coupling (EPC) in cuprate CDWs is strongly debated. Using Cu L 3 edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, we study the CDW and Cu-O bond-stretching phonons in the stripe-ordered cuprate La 1.8-x Eu 0.2 Sr x CuO 4+δ . In this work, we investigate the interplay between charge order and EPC as a function of doping and temperature and find that the EPC is enhanced in a narrow momentum region around the CDW ordering vector. By detuning the incident photon energy from the absorption resonance, we extract an EPC matrix element at the CDW ordering vector of M ≃ 0.36 eV , which decreases to M ≃ 0.30 eV at high temperature in the absence of the CDW. Our results suggest a feedback mechanism in which the CDW enhances the EPC which, in turn, further stabilizes the CDW.

Optical Properties of the Infinite-Layer La 1-x Sr x NiO 2 and Hidden Hund's Physics

We investigate the optical properties of the normal state of the infinite-layer La 1-x Sr x NiO 2 using density functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory. We find a correlated metal which exhibits substantial transfer of spectral weight to high energies relative to the density functional theory. The correlations are not due to Mott physics, which would suppress the charge fluctuations and the integrated optical spectral weight as we approach a putative insulating state. Instead, we find the unusual situation, that the integrated optical spectral weight decreases with doping and increases with increasing temperature. We contrast this with the coherent component of the optical conductivity, which decreases with increasing temperature as a result of a coherence-incoherence crossover. Our studies reveal that the effective crystal field splitting is dynamical and increases strongly at low frequency. This leads to a picture of a Hund's metallic state, where dynamical orbital fluctuations are visible at intermediate energies, while at low energies a Fermi surface with primarily d x 2 -y 2 character emerges. The infinite-layer nickelates are thus in an intermediate position between the iron based high temperature superconductors where multiorbital Hund's physics dominates and a one-band system such as the cuprates. To capture this physics we propose a low-energy two-band model with atom centered e g states.

Two-Dimensional Superconducting Fluctuations Associated with Charge-Density-Wave Stripes in La 1.87 ⁢Sr 0.13 ⁢Cu 0.99 ⁢Fe 0.01 ⁢O 4

The presence of a small concentration of in-plane Fe dopants in La 1.87 Sr 0.13 Cu 0.99 Fe 0.01 O 4 is known to enhance stripelike spin and charge density wave (SDW and CDW) order and suppress the superconducting T c . Here, we show that it also induces highly two-dimensional superconducting correlations that have been argued to be the signatures of a new form of superconducting order, the so-called pair density wave (PDW) order. In addition, using resonant soft x-ray scattering, we find that the two-dimensional superconducting fluctuation is strongly associated with the CDW stripe. In particular, the PDW signature first appears when the correlation length of the CDW stripe grows over eight times the lattice unit (~8 a). In conclusion, these results provide critical conditions for the formation of the PDW order.

Prevailing Charge Order in Overdoped La 2 – x Sr x CuO 4 beyond the Superconducting Dome

The extremely overdoped cuprates are generally considered to be Fermi liquid metals without exotic orders, whereas the underdoped cuprates harbor intertwined states. Contrary to this conventional wisdom, using Cu L 3 -edge and O K-edge resonant x-ray scattering, we reveal a charge order (CO) correlation in overdoped La 2–x⁢ Sr x ⁢CuO 4 (0.35 ≤ x ≤0.6) beyond the superconducting dome. This CO has a periodicity of ~6 lattice units with correlation lengths of ~20 lattice units. It shows similar in-plane momentum and polarization dependence and dispersive excitations as the CO of underdoped cuprates, but its maximum intensity differs along the c direction and persists up to 300 K. This CO correlation cannot be explained by the Fermi surface instability and its origin remains to be understood. Finally, our results suggest that CO is prevailing in the overdoped metallic regime and requires a reassessment of the picture of overdoped cuprates as weakly correlated Fermi liquids.

Evolution of the Magnetic Excitations in Electron-Doped La 2 - x Ce x CuO 4

Here we investigated the high energy spin excitations in electron-doped La 2-x Ce x CuO 4 , a cuprate superconductor, by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements. Efforts were paid to disentangle the paramagnon signal from non-spin-flip spectral weight mixing in the RIXS spectrum at Q ∥ =(0.6π,0) and (0.9π,0) along the (1 0) direction. Our results show that, for doping level x from 0.07 to 0.185, the variation of the paramagnon excitation energy is marginal. We discuss the implication of our results in connection with the evolution of the electron correlation strength in this system.

Electronic structure of the alternating monolayer-trilayer phase of La 3 Ni 2 O 7

Recent studies of La 3 Ni 2 O 7 have identified a bilayer (2222) structure and an unexpected alternating monolayer-trilayer (1313) structure, both of which feature signatures of superconductivity near 80 K under high pressures. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we measure the electronic structure of 1313 samples. In contrast to the previously studied 2222 structure, we find that the 1313 structure hosts a flat band with a markedly different binding energy, as well as an additional electron pocket and band splittings. By comparison to local-density approximation calculations, we find renormalizations of the Ni-d z 2 and Ni-d x 2 -y 2 derived bands to be about 5 to 7 and about 4 respectively, suggesting strong correlation effects. These results reveal important differences in the electronic structure brought about by the distinct structural motifs with the same stoichiometry. Such differences may be relevant to the putative high temperature superconductivity.

Growth and characterization of large (Y,La)TiO 3 and (Y,Ca)TiO 3 single crystals

The Mott-insulating rare-earth titanates ( R TiO 3 , with R being a rare-earth ion) are an important class of materials that encompasses interesting spin-orbital phases as well as ferromagnet-antiferromagnet and insulator-metal transitions. The growth of these materials has been plagued by difficulties related to overoxidation, which arises from a strong tendency of Ti 3 + to oxidize to Ti 4 + . We describe our efforts to grow sizable single crystals of YTiO 3 , Y 1 - x La x TiO 3 ( x ≤ 0.25 ), and Y 1 - y Ca y TiO 3 ( y ≤ 0.35 ) with the optical traveling-solvent floating-zone technique. Finally, we present sample characterization via chemical composition analysis, magnetometry, charge transport, neutron scattering, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism to understand macroscopic physical property variations associated with overoxidation. Furthermore, we demonstrate a good signal-to-noise ratio in inelastic magnetic neutron scattering measurements of spin-wave excitations. A superconducting impurity phase, found to appear in Ca-doped samples at high doping levels, is identified as TiO.
