College-bound cowboys: The Los Alamos Ranch School Before the wartime lab, Los Alamos was home to a boarding school

Summer’s over and the school year’s soon to start. What’s a kid to do? Go West, young man! Escape the city that is “making you soft” and learn self-reliance from the western U.S. of A. – or so advertised the ranch school movement in America from roughly 1900-1960. This educational movement included Los Alamos. Before being developed into a wartime lab to create atomic weapons, the mesa was home to one of the most prominent and pricey ranch schools in America.

The Vault National Security Then & Now (2021 Annual)

Looking back, I can say with certainty that we rose to the challenge. Like other entities all around the globe, the National Security Research Center was tested by the COVID-19 pandemic. As a young organization (we celebrated our second anniversary in June 2021) and one that is critical to Los Alamos National Laboratory’s national security charge, we faced the difficult task of continuing our mission-essential work while keeping our staff safe. The NSRC is one of the largest libraries in the United States, and it houses the country’s most-comprehensive collections of nuclear weapons-related national security material. The NSRC contains millions of documents, films, photos, and other materials on the development, testing, and production of nuclear weapons. These are accessed on a daily basis by scientists, engineers, and researchers at Los Alamos and other National Nuclear Security Administration’s labs and sites, as well as partners in the Department of Defense. It was not an option for us to close our doors - our nation’s security depended on us not to. Not only did we continue operating under new safety protocols, we successfully accomplished many pre-pandemic goals. Thanks to the NSRC’s dedicated staff, our accomplishments during our second year are too numerous to list, though two in particular come to mind.

Fission to Fusion: An Island Goes Missing

Hollywood actor Reed Hadley walked the decks of the USS Estes with the practiced ease characteristic of his profession. Stopping periodically to relight his pipe, Hadley narrated an AEC film depicting the final hours and minutes leading up to the detonation of Mike, the world’s first thermonuclear bomb. Hadley’s smooth camera presence contrasted sharply with those of the scientists and technicians he interviewed, particularly Alvin Graves, who came across wooden and condescending. Just after Hadley put on his dark goggles to prevent flash blindness, Mike exploded with a force of 10.4 megatons, completely vaporizing the entire ground zero island of Elugelab. The film made one thing clear – Los Alamos scientists could build a thermonuclear bomb, but they could not act.

The Importance of Ontologies to LANL’s Future Search Capabilities [Slides]

Digitizing physical archives is designed to make documents more accessible. An ontology in this context is a network of discrete concepts (things, people, places, etc.) and, importantly, the relationships that connect them. This will help both the recall and the precision of the search: being able to link to concepts I didn’t type directly into the search box will get more results from a search, while knowing how the concepts are related to each other will make it easier to filter out the stuff that isn’t actually useful. Ontologies make a database more flexible and easier for a user to actually navigate.

Global Trends of ASME "N-Stamp" Certifications for Nuclear Component Vendors

Historically, nuclear component manufacturing vendors, from small businesses through large conglomerates, have felt compelled to obtain an American Society for Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Nuclear Certification, known colloquially as an "N-stamp", to assure supply chain quality standards that will be acceptable to regulators and safety concerns. Since the N-stamp quality standard is a U.S.-origin code, combined with the apparent decline in the U.S. nuclear industry alongside the growth of the Asian nuclear industry, there is the question of whether the rest of the world, including new entrants to the nuclear industry, also regard N-stamp as a needed certification. This study addresses this question through analysis of the entire N-stamp database of holders, and former holders, of N-stamp certificates of all types and for all regions worldwide from 1989-2020 (the dates available in the database). From this 30 years of data, we find that actually U.S.-based vendors still consistently obtain the largest number of N-stamps worldwide over all time periods, but also find that the countries participating in the N-stamp certification process has broadly expanded beyond just North America, Japan, S. Korea and Western Europe (the primary N-stamp recipients before the mid-2000's). We produced global heats maps and bar charts to illustrate our findings, as well as further investigation into why the data shows changes over time and region. We note that nuclear entities involved with Soviet-type reactors do not participate in the N-stamp process, but instead pursue the Russian version PNAE, which is substantially similar to the ASME code. We conclude that at least from the N-stamp database, the United States nuclear component manufacturing industry is alive and well, although there have been some consolidations, and that the ASME N-stamp appears to still be a valued certificate worldwide, including in China which now ranks second only to the United States in obtaining N-stamp certificates in recent years. We further note that the vendors of new reactor types, in particular High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactors (HTGRs) and Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), are actively engaged with ASME (and other U.S.-based nuclear standards bodies such as the American Nuclear Society and Nuclear Energy Institute) to coordinate updates to the ASME N-Stamp criteria to ensure applicability of the code for these new designs. Implications of these findings include the following: The global use of the U.S.-origin N-stamp certification supports the view that, despite the decline of the U.S. nuclear industry, the United States remains an esteemed global leader in the area of nuclear safety. As the U.S. Government works to revitalize the U.S. nuclear industry, especially in the area of exports, it may be beneficial to leverage the global standing of the N-stamp certification. The findings indicate that the N-stamp database would be a useful tool for the U.S. Government to use to track the growth of the civil nuclear industry in foreign countries, under certain circumstances. The Excel-format N-stamp database produced as part of this study may be a useful tool for this purpose. N-stamp data may be a useful tool for foreign governments to use to identify nuclear manufacturers within their own country, especially to identify "targets" for outreach on nuclear export control compliance. The U.S. Government could carry this message to foreign partners during bilateral engagements or as part of Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) discussions on industry outreach.

Nuclear Enterprise Science & Technology (NEST) [Slides]

The NEST Certificate Program is designed to provide students with the skills and experience to qualify for entry-level positions in nuclear facilities as Fissile Material Handler and/or Glovebox Operator. The program goal is to provide for a technically qualified workforce who can execute a variety of programmatic work in modern nuclear materials handling and processing facilities. The program is designed to be completed in a minimum of 1 year (2 semesters) of university level courses (30 credit hours). A certificate will be offered and awarded through the University of New Mexico – Los Alamos (UNM-LA). NEST is unique in that it is an immersive education program. The NNSA-required training for nuclear material handlers and fissionable material handlers has been cross-walked with the educational Core Curricula. Academic content will be delivered that provides background scientific and engineering understanding of the fundamental concepts behind this training. It will be offered as a Pilot Program to an incumbent cohort to ensure that the Certificate meets programmatic needs. NEST is modelled after a Wharton County Junior College (Texas) program to attract and produce nuclear reactor operators.

Be like Oppenheimer: Donate your weapons information for the next generation of LANL researchers

You can follow the Lab’s first physicists, J. Robert Oppenheimer, Richard Feynman, Hans Bethe, and so many others through the years, plus know your information is helping future researchers — just like our first scientists did for you. How? Donate your physical or digital classified weapons records to the Lab’s National Security Research Center (NSRC), said Riz Ali, NSRC Director. The NSRC houses 80 years’ worth of one-of-kind records, which total in the millions and include nearly every medium imaginable. It is the Laboratory’s largest collection of research materials and the largest classified library of any Department of Energy lab. It all started with Oppenheimer, our first Lab director, and his Technical Library that was established during the Manhattan Project, which was the U.S. government’s top-secret effort to create the first atomic bombs to help end World War II. “Few NSRC patrons are aware that most of its vital materials come from the Lab’s own workforce,” said Chris C’de Baca, the NSRC’s Group Leader. “A significant portion of our critical material — which today’s researchers access regularly — is a direct contribution from research scientists. If people don’t contribute, then we won’t have the information we need when people come to the NSRC for research.”

Summer 2021 Internship Report

The Library Research and Prototyping team (Proto Team) under the research library explores aspects of scholarly communication, covering aspects of infrastructure, interoperability, and persistence. One of the key contributions of the team is the contribution in standardizing and forming the infrastructure for Mementos in web archiving. The Memento framework in web archiving enables access to digital resources in prior versions serving both persistence and the interoperability of the information. During the internship program, I worked on improving the Memento infrastructure by updating the memento validator. The Memento validator provides the functionality of testing the compliance of the web resources to the Memento specification. The application is intended to be used by the community at large such as web archives, researchers, librarians, and general users, with different levels of technical expertise.

Summer 2021 Internship Report

During this internship program, I was assigned with developing a Web application to robustify web resources referenced by links (URI-Rs) in PDFs. It was intended for use in LANL Research 2 Library systems such as RASSTI (Review and Approval System for Scientific and Technical Information), where users submit scholarly PDFs that may contain URI-Rs. For such PDFs, the application should, using Web Archives, create robust snapshots (i.e., Mementos) of the web resources referenced by URI-Rs, and notify this robustification to LANL Research Library systems. The Mementos were to be created using the Robust Links Service, and the notifications were to be sent using the Linked Data Notifications (LDN) Protocol.
