Coarse-grained methods for heterogeneous vesicles with phase-separated domains: Elastic mechanics of shape fluctuations, plate compression, and channel insertion

We develop coarse-grained particle approaches for studying the elastic mechanics of vesicles with heterogeneous membranes having phase-separated domains. We perform simulations both of passive shape fluctuations and of active systems where vesicles are subjected to compression between two plates or subjected to insertion into narrow channels. Analysis methods are developed for mapping particle configurations to continuum fields with spherical harmonics representations. Heterogeneous vesicles are found to exhibit rich behaviors where the heterogeneity can amplify surface two-point correlations, reduce resistance during compression, and augment vesicle transport times in channels. The developed methods provide general approaches for characterizing the mechanics of coarse-grained heterogeneous systems taking into account the roles of thermal fluctuations, geometry, and phase separation.

Surface grain refinement of casting A380 aluminum alloy by ultrasonic-assisted surface mechanical grinding treatment

A novel surface processing technique, ultrasonic-assisted surface mechnical grinding treatment (U-SMGT), was proposed and applied to modify the surface micriostructure of the casting aluminum alloy (A380). Comprehensive post-process chracterization techniques including 3D profilometry, optical microscope, scanning electric microscopy (SEM), and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) were carried out to investigate the surface morphology and microstructure of the processed region (PR). It was found that a surface layer of grain refinement with a thickness of about 50 µm was formed. In the as-received base material (BM), large clusters of dendritic eutectic phase with a size of approximately 20 µm were isolated by α-Al matrix. Nano-indentation tests showed that hardness of the eutectic and α-Al in the as-received BM was 2.15 GPa and 1.2 GPa respectively. After U-SMGT, the large dendritic eutectic phase was broken down into much fine particles with an average size of 0.57 µm. These fine particles were uniformly distributed into the α-Al matrix. Nano-indentation measurement exhibited a hardness of 2.27 GPa within the processed region. The overall high hardness in the processed region is a result of the pinning effect of uniformly distributed fine dendrites and grain refinement of Al-matrix.

Evidence of hexagonal germanium grains on annealed monolayer MoS 2

Growing three-dimensional (3D) materials on two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals surface has shown its effectiveness in overcoming materials incompatibility for stacking transferrable membranes toward advanced device manufacturing. Herein, we demonstrate that the nucleation of hexagonal germanium (Ge) grains within a continuous crystalline film, which has been unfeasible through traditional epitaxy techniques, is realized by chemical vapor deposition on top of n-type monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) substrates. Suggested by quantum molecular dynamics calculation, the hexagonal Ge nucleation is thermodynamically preferable to cubic Ge when growing on monolayer MoS 2 with sulfur vacancies. The strained hexagonal Ge grains have been confirmed by transmission electron microscopy analyses from both real space and reciprocal space. Scanning probe microscopy shows that the hexagonal Ge film possesses higher reflectivity in infrared spectral range, implying a higher carrier concentration resulted from the narrower band gap, as compared to cubic Ge.

Numerical and experimental characterization of twin transmission across grain boundaries along the forward and lateral directions

Pervasive deformation twinning and transmission events across grain boundaries (GBs) affect the strength and failure of hexagonal close-packed (HCP) magnesium. A three-dimensional twin can transmit along the twinning shear direction, (forward), and along the direction perpendicular to both the twinning plane normal and the shear direction, (lateral). For the first time, phase-field calculations and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD)-based statistical analysis are combined to investigate the effect of the twinned grain boundary characteristics on twin transmission (TT) along the forward and lateral directions. This combined analysis reveals that TT propensity decreases with increasing misorientation angle across the GB for both forward and lateral directions. Also, the TT is more favorable along the lateral than along the forward direction. Twin transmission seems harder across GBs with a misorientation axis closer to the twin -direction than the other directions ( and ). Further, the PF calculations reveal that, at the onset of a transmission process, the crystallography tends to be preserved in the case of lateral transmission, whereas, in the forward transmission case, the transmitted twin punches straight through the GBs and its morphology prevails. Additionally, the EBSD analysis finds that pure forward and lateral transmissions do not occur often, yet reveals a preference for lateral propagation consistent with PF simulations. Further, the local twin transmission configurations observed in the actual material do not correspond to pure tilt or twist GBs, which are most commonly considered as model cases.

Recent progress on coarse graining simulations

We focus on coarse graining simulations based on the primary conservation equations, effectively codesigned physics and algorithms, and low-Mach-number corrected (LMC) hydrodynamics. Simulation methods involve LANL’s x-Radiation-Adaptive-Grid-Eulerian Large-Eddy Simulation, Besnard-Harlow-Rauenzahn (BHR) Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) approach, and Dynamic BHR – a paradigm bridging RANS and LES. A relevant question addressed relates to whether 3D RANS and RANS/LES hybrids – the industry standards for aerospace and automotive research, are presently relevant for practical variable-density applications involving shocked and accelerated interface instabilities. Furthermore, recent simulations of the GaTECH inclined mixing-layer shock-tube and NIF ICF-capsule experiments are used to demonstrate issues, challenges, and potential for 3D coarse grained LMC simulation strategies for robustly simulating complex transitional and coupled hydrodynamics-multiphysics with coarser resolution. Present LES readiness to provide accurate predictions at scale is demonstrated – whereas 3D RANS and RANS/LES bridging do not appear impactful in this context.

A novel sub-pilot-scale direct-contact ultrasonic dehydration technology for sustainable production of distillers dried grains (DDG)

DDG is a major source of protein, calcium, phosphorus, and sulfur is arguably the most important byproduct of the bioethanol industry with increasing demand over the past few years. Reducing energy consumption in the DDG production process and energy recovery from DDG is vital for sustainable bioethanol productions. In this paper, a novel direct-contact multi-frequency, multimode, and modulated (MMM) ultrasonic dryer (US) was developed for the first time and has been applied in dehydration of wet distillers' grain (WDG). Ultrasonic drying (US) was combined with a convective airflow (HA) at different temperatures of 25 (room temperature), 50 and 70 °C to evaluate the impact of US, HA, and US + HA on drying kinetics, activation energy, chemical compositions, microstructure, and color of DDG. Semi-empirical kinetic models were developed and evaluating drying performances showed that the application of ultrasound significantly enhanced the drying rate and decreased the drying time (by 46%), especially at low drying temperatures. The activation energy for moisture removal in the presence of ultrasound was about 50% of that without ultrasound. The final dried distillers' grains product processed by ultrasonic drying had a brighter color, a higher available protein, a higher digestible protein (the lowest acid detergent insoluble crude protein), and a better surface profile with no compromise on minerals and fiber contents.

cm 2 -Scale Synthesis of MoTe 2 Thin Films with Large Grains and Layer Control

Owing to the small energy differences between its polymorphs, MoTe 2 can access a full spectrum of electronic states from the 2H semiconducting state to the 1T' semimetallic state and from the T d Weyl semimetallic state to the superconducting state in the 1T' and T d phase at low temperature. Thus, it is a model system for phase transformation studies as well as quantum phenomena such as the quantum spin Hall effect and topological superconductivity. Careful studies of MoTe 2 and its potential applications require large-area MoTe 2 thin films with high crystallinity and thickness control. Here, we present cm 2 -scale synthesis of 2H-MoTe 2 thin films with layer control and large grains that span several microns. Layer control is achieved by controlling the initial thickness of the precursor MoO x thin films, which are deposited on sapphire substrates by atomic layer deposition and subsequently tellurized. Despite the van der Waals epitaxy, the precursor–substrate interface is found to critically determine the uniformity in thickness and grain size of the resulting MoTe 2 films: MoTe 2 grown on sapphire show uniform films while MoTe 2 grown on amorphous SiO 2 substrates form islands. Furthermore, this synthesis strategy decouples the layer control from the variabilities of growth conditions for robust growth results and is applicable to growing other transition-metal dichalcogenides with layer control.

A classical equation that accounts for observations of non-Arrhenius and cryogenic grain boundary migration

Observations of microstructural coarsening at cryogenic temperatures, as well as numerous simulations of grain boundary motion that show faster migration at low temperature than at high temperature, have been troubling because they do not follow the expected Arrhenius behavior. This work demonstrates that classical equations, that are not simplified, account for all these oddities and demonstrate that non-Arrhenius behavior can emerge from thermally activated processes. According to this classical model, this occurs when the intrinsic barrier energies of the processes become small, allowing activation at cryogenic temperatures. Additional thermal energy then allows the low energy process to proceed in reverse, so increasing temperature only serves to frustrate the forward motion. This classical form is shown to reconcile and describe a variety of diverse grain boundary migration observations.

Reinforcement learning based hybrid bond-order coarse-grained interatomic potentials for exploring mesoscale aggregation in liquid–liquid mixtures

Exploring mesoscopic physical phenomena has always been a challenge for brute-force all-atom molecular dynamics simulations. Although recent advances in computing hardware have improved the accessible length scales, reaching mesoscopic timescales is still a significant bottleneck. Coarse-graining of all-atom models allows robust investigation of mesoscale physics with a reduced spatial and temporal resolution but preserves desired structural features of molecules, unlike continuum-based methods. Here, we present a hybrid bond-order coarse-grained forcefield (HyCG) for modeling mesoscale aggregation phenomena in liquid–liquid mixtures. The intuitive hybrid functional form of the potential offers interpretability to our model, unlike many machine learning based interatomic potentials. We parameterize the potential with the continuous action Monte Carlo Tree Search (cMCTS) algorithm, a reinforcement learning (RL) based global optimizing scheme, using training data from all-atom simulations. The resulting RL-HyCG correctly describes mesoscale critical fluctuations in binary liquid–liquid extraction systems. cMCTS, the RL algorithm, accurately captures the mean behavior of various geometrical properties of the molecule of interest, which were excluded from the training set. The developed potential model along with the RL-based training workflow could be applied to explore a variety of other mesoscale physical phenomena that are typically inaccessible to all-atom molecular dynamics simulations.

Grain size and structure distortion characterization of α-MgAgSb thermoelectric material by powder diffraction

Nanostructuring, structure distortion and/or disorder are the main manipulation techniques to reduce the lattice thermal conductivity and improve the figure of merit of thermoelectric materials. A single-phase α-MgAgSb sample, MgAg 0.97 Sb 0.99 , with high thermoelectric performance in near room temperature region was synthesized through a high-energy ball milling with a hot-pressing method. In this work, we report the average grain size of 24-28 nm and the accurate structure distortion, which are characterized by high-resolution neutron diffraction and synchrotron X-ray diffraction with Rietveld refinement data analysis. Both the small grain size and the structure distortion have a contribution to the low lattice thermal conductivity in MgAg 0.97 Sb 0.99 .

Convection-Induced Compositional Patterning at Grain Boundaries in Irradiated Alloys

We consider the stability of precipitates formed at grain boundaries (GBs) by radiation-induced segregation in dilute alloys subjected to irradiation. Here, the effects of grain size and misorientation of symmetric-tilt GBs are quantified using phase field modeling. A novel regime is identified where, at long times, GBs are decorated by precipitate patterns that resist coarsening. Maps of the chemical Péclet number indicate that arrested coarsening takes place when solute advection dominates over thermal diffusion right up to the precipitate/matrix interface, preventing interfacial local equilibrium and overriding capillary effects. This contrasts with liquid-solid mixtures where convection always accelerates coarsening.

Geometrically necessary dislocation fingerprints of dislocation loop absorption at grain boundaries

Here we present a numerical methodology to compute the Nye-tensor fingerprints of dislocation loop absorption at grain boundaries (GBs) for comparison with TEM observations of irradiated polycrystals. Our approach links atomistic simulations of self-interstitial atom (SIA) prismatic loops gliding toward and interacting with GBs in body-centered cubic iron with experimentally extracted geometrically necessary dislocation (GND) maps to facilitate the interpretation of damage processes. The Nye-tensor analysis is strongly mesh-size dependent—corresponding to resolution-dependent TEM observations. The method computes GND fingerprints from discretized dislocation line segments extracted from molecular dynamics simulations of dislocation loops being absorbed at a GB. Specifically, we perform MD simulation of prismatic loops of two diameters and monitor the three stages of the absorption process: loop glide, the partial, and full absorption of the loops at a [1 0 0] symmetric tilt GB. These methods provide a framework for future investigations of the nature of defect absorption by grain boundaries under irradiation conditions.

Development of Dy-free Nd-Fe-B-based sintered magnet through grain boundary engineering using Pr-Cu alloys

For this study, Dy-free sintered magnets were fabricated by mixing Nd-Fe-B powder with various amounts of Pr-Cu powder followed by the common procedures for making Nd-Fe-B based sintered magnets. With the Pr-Cu addition increasing from 0 to 10 wt.%, the obtained magnets’ H cj increases from the original 14.5 kOe to 18.6 kOe. The highest (BH) max achieved was 35.0 MGOe with 7.5 wt.% PrCu. The distribution of the Pr and Cu elements was primarily at grain boundary and triple junctions, leading to a reduced coupling among grains, thus an enhanced H cj .

The Role of Grain Boundary Structure and Chemistry in Materials Failure

The objective of this project was to reveal how we can design materials with a tunable mechanical behavior through interface engineering. To do so we focused on understanding slip transmission across internal surfaces and how it relates to the strength and chemistry of the internal surface. In doing so we followed an interdisciplinary approach that employed theory, experiments and molecular dynamic (MD) simulations. Our guideline was that interfaces are characterized by their own mechanically induced interface parameter. New dislocation-grain boundary interaction mechanisms were revealed and the strengthening effects of non-traditional interfaces. We began studying simple grain boundaries in Fe systems, and then moved on to newly explored systems such as graphene-metal and nanolayer composites.

Graph-theoretical KMC Framework for Calculating Effective Diffusivity in TPBAR Components: Effective Diffusivity of Tritium in α-Zr Grain Boundaries

We report the development of a computer simulation tool based on the Graph-theoretical kinetic Monte Carlo (GT-KMC) approach that can be used to simulate diffusion and derive effective diffusivity of species in complex structures of TPBAR components. The GT-KMC framework was implemented in AKSOME, an on-lattice self-learning kinetic Monte Carlo tool developed at PNNL and was previously used to study solute diffusion in metal alloys. This newly developed tool will be helpful in simulating atom diffusion and extracting their effective diffusivities in grain boundaries and interfaces in various TPBAR components. Once benchmarked, the tool will be used to simulate the diffusion of tritium (hydrogen) along grain boundaries in α-Zr using the activation energy barrier data previously obtained from Density Functional Theory calculations.

Multi-Trait Regressor Stacking Increased Genomic Prediction Accuracy of Sorghum Grain Composition

Genomic prediction has enabled plant breeders to estimate breeding values of unobserved genotypes and environments. The use of genomic prediction will be extremely valuable for compositional traits for which phenotyping is labor-intensive and destructive for most accurate results. We studied the potential of Bayesian multi-output regressor stacking (BMORS) model in improving prediction performance over single trait single environment (STSE) models using a grain sorghum diversity panel (GSDP) and a biparental recombinant inbred lines (RILs) population. A total of five highly correlated grain composition traits—amylose, fat, gross energy, protein and starch, with genomic heritability ranging from 0.24 to 0.59 in the GSDP and 0.69 to 0.83 in the RILs were studied. Average prediction accuracies from the STSE model were within a range of 0.4 to 0.6 for all traits across both populations except amylose (0.25) in the GSDP. Prediction accuracy for BMORS increased by 41% and 32% on average over STSE in the GSDP and RILs, respectively. Prediction of whole environments by training with remaining environments in BMORS resulted in moderate to high prediction accuracy. Our results show regression stacking methods such as BMORS have potential to accurately predict unobserved individuals and environments, and implementation of such models can accelerate genetic gain.

Exploratory Studies of Mechanical Properties, Residual Stress, and Grain Evolution at the Local Regions near Pores in Additively Manufactured Metals

Directed energy deposition (DED) is gaining widespread acceptance in various industrial applications since its unique manufacturing features allow the DED to print metallic parts with very complex geometries. However, DED inevitably generates a lot of internal pores which can limit the widespread applications of the DED technique. The current studies on DED porosity are mostly focused on analyzing pores’ bulk-scale influences on mechanical properties and performances. Since DED pores have a micro-scale existence, with dimensions ranging from a few microns to several hundred microns, it is fundamental to explore the pores’ influences on the micro-scale, including local mechanical properties, residual stress, and grains near pores. However, this important research direction has been neglected. The objective of this work is to fill the above gap in DED porosity research and acquire a fundamental understanding of the role of porosity on a microscopic scale. The authors used nanoindentation approaches to investigate internal pores’ effects on mechanical properties and residual stress in local regions surrounding the pores. In addition, the grains near pores were observed through EBSD, and simulated with the Kinetic Monte Carlo model. The research findings can be provided for DED researchers and industrial practitioners as technical guidance. Most importantly, the research results can work as a good reference for tracing the source of bulk-scale mechanical performances and properties of DED parts with internal pores.
