Narrow-bandwidth tunable optical filter stabilized by Newton’s rings fringe analysis

The resolution of grating spectrometers is insufficient to resolve many features present in the emission spectra of solid-state quantum emitters. Spectral resolution may be improved by inserting a Fabry–Perot interferometer (FPI) whose length is tuned by a piezoelectric actuator. Yet piezo creep and thermal fluctuations cause instability that makes this solution unsuitable for measurement times longer than tens of seconds. To overcome this challenge, we employ active feedback derived from the Newton’s rings interference pattern formed by the reflection of a single-frequency laser from the FPI cavity. The resulting FPI transmission frequency is stable to within 50 MHz over several hours.

Side-lobe reduction by cascading Bragg grating filters on a Si-photonic chip

Bragg-grating based cavities and coupler designs present opportunities for flexible allocation of bandwidth and spectrum in silicon photonic devices. Integrated silicon photonic devices are moving toward mainstream, mass adoption, leading to the need for compact Bragg grating based designs. In this work we present a design and experimental validation of a cascaded contra-directional Bragg-grating coupler with a measured main lobe to side-lobe contrast of 12.93 dB. This level of performance is achieved in a more compact size as compared to conventional apodized gratings, and a similar design philosophy can be used to improve side-lobe reduction in grating-based mirror design for on-chip lasers and other cavity-based designs as well.

Explosion Discrimination Using Seismic Gradiometry and Spectral Filtering of Data

Here, we present a new method to discriminate between earthquakes and buried explosions using observed seismic data. The method is different from previous seismic discrimination algorithms in two main ways. First, we use seismic spatial gradients, as well as the wave attributes estimated from them (referred to as gradiometric attributes), rather than the conventional three-component seismograms recorded on a distributed array. The primary advantage of this is that a gradiometer is only a fraction of a wavelength in aperture compared with a conventional seismic array or network. Second, we use the gradiometric attributes as input data into a machine learning algorithm. The resulting discrimination algorithm uses the norms of truncated principal components obtained from the gradiometric data to distinguish the two classes of seismic events. Using high-fidelity synthetic data, we show that the data and gradiometric attributes recorded by a single seismic gradiometer performs as well as a conventional distributed array at the event type discrimination task.

Measurements of Extinct Radionuclides in Filter Paper Samples

Radiochemical diagnostics rely on measurements of short-lived fission product isotopes. Once months to years have passed since isotope formation, the most useful short-lived signatures have decayed away and become extinct. Recent work at our lab has developed new methods to reconstruct the concentrations of extinct radionuclides using mass spectrometry to measure the stable daughter elements formed from radioactive decay. However, the applicability of these techniques to different types of samples has not been fully investigated.

Filter Adapters for BI-PAP and CPAP Equipment

Researchers at Los Alamos National Laboratory are researching and designing technology intended to help reduce the exposure of patients and medical staff to pathogens, such as SARS-CoV-2, while providing medical staff the dexterity and flexible work conditions necessary to conduct routine and complex patient care on infected patients. This investigative technology would potentially enable hospitals to adapt, utilize, and repurpose existing Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP) or Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (C-PAP) equipment in the fight against COVID-19, which would potentially save hospitals significant money, reduce exposure to staff and patients, and increase the supply of critically needed devices at a time when supplies are scarce in the market place. A provisional patent has been filed on the technology and we are seeking a commercialization partner to license and further develop the product for commercial purposes, including processing the device through the FDA emergency use authorization or clearance process. One hospital system has indicated that upon FDA authorization or clearance, it would have interest in the product.

Characterization, Chemistry, and Particle Size Distribution of Fallout Particles Isolated from Filter Samples

Nuclear particulate fallout is the radioactive byproduct of a nuclear event formed by the mixture of proximate environmental materials with vaporized bomb debris. The debris can be transported into the atmosphere during cloud rise, raining out locally and globally constituting a radiation hazard. Questions remain on how entrainment of environmental material in the fireball affects fallout formation processes and radionuclide incorporation during cooling.

High Intensity Gamma Ray Source Scintillation Attenuation Spectrometer and Filter Stack Monoenergetic Calibration

The Laser-Based X-ray Radiographic Imaging team at Los Alamos National Lab is looking for a monoenergetic MeV X-ray source to both verify our Monte Carlo N-particle simulations of detector performance and calibrate the instruments for future measurements. Funded by the Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) program, our overall goal is to improve the radiographic quality and reliability of laser-based X-ray sources for deployment at both dynamic and static radiography facilities. Laser-based X-ray sources have demonstrated smaller spot sizes to current electron accelerator based sources. The smaller laser spot size leads to significantly improved resolution.
