Tunable Single-Frequency Near IR Lasers for DIAL Applications

Tunable single-frequency sources in the 2-4 micron wavelength region are useful for remote DIAL measurements of chemicals and pollutants. We are developing tunable single-frequency transmitters and receivers for both direct and coherent detection lidar measurement applications. We have demonstrated a direct-diode-pumped PPLN-based OPO that operates single frequency, produces greater than 10 mW cw and is tunable over the 2.5 - 3.9 micron wavelength region. This laser has been used to injection seed a pulsed PPLN OPO, pumped by a 1.064 micron Nd:YAG laser, producing 50-100 microJoule single-frequency pulses at 100 Hz PRF near 3.6 micron wavelength. In addition, we have demonstrated a cw Cr:ZnSe laser that is tunable over the 2.1 - 2.8 micron wavelength region. This laser is pumped by a cw diode-pumped Tm:YALO laser and has produced over 1.8 W cw. Tm- and Tm, Ho-doped single-frequency solid-state lasers that produce over 50 mW cw and are tunable over approximately 10 nm in the 2 -2.1 micron band with fast PZT tuning have also been demonstrated. A fast PZT-tunable Tm, Ho:YLF laser was used for a direct-detection column content DIAL measurement of atmospheric CO2. Modeling shows that that all these cw and pulsed sources are useful for column-content coherent DIAL measurements at several km range using topographic targets.

SEEDS Direct Imaging of the RV-Detected Companion to V450 Andromedae, and Characterization of the System

We report the direct imaging detection of a low-mass companion to a young, moderately active star V450 And, that was previously identified with the radial velocity (RV) method. The companion was found in high-contrast images obtained with the Subaru Telescope equipped with the HiCIAO camera and AO188 adaptive optics system. From the public ELODIE and SOPHIE archives we extracted available high-resolution spectra and RV measurements, along with RVs from the Lick planet search program. We combined our multi-epoch astrometry with these archival, partially unpublished RVs, and found that the companion is a low-mass star, not a brown dwarf, as previously suggested. We found the best-fitting dynamical masses to be m(sub 1) = 1.141(sup + 0.037, sub - 0.091) and m(sub 2) = 0.279(sup + 0.023, sub - 0.020) solar mass. We also performed spectral analysis of the SOPHIE spectra with the iSpec code. Hipparcos time-series photometry shows a periodicity of P = 5.743 day, which is also seen in the SOPHIE spectra as an RV modulation of the star A. We interpret it as being caused by spots on the stellar surface, and the star to be rotating with the given period. From the rotation and level of activity, we found that the system is 380(sup + 220, sub -100) Myr old, consistent with an isochrone analysis (220 (sup +2120, sub -90) Myr). This work may serve as a test case for future studies of low mass stars, brown dwarfs, and exoplanets by combination of RV and direct imaging data.

Positive cloud-to-ground lightning detection by a direction-finder network

Consideration is given to the ability of an automatic direction-finder network to identify cloud-to-ground flashes that effectively lower positive charge to the ground (+CG flashes). Records from an extremely low frequency system are examined to determine whether or not 340 +CG flashes detected by the network have coincident waveforms characteristic of +CG flashes. It is found that false detection in the system is negligible for +CG flashes with range-normalized amplitudes of at least 50 direction-finder units. Also, it is shown that no more than about 15 percent of the +CG flashes detected by the system at smaller amplitudes are false detections.

Methods of DNA methylation detection

The present invention provides for methods of DNA methylation detection. The present invention provides for methods of generating and detecting specific electronic signals that report the methylation status of targeted DNA molecules in biological samples. Two methods are described, direct and indirect detection of methylated DNA molecules in a nano transistor based device. In the direct detection, methylated target DNA molecules are captured on the sensing surface resulting in changes in the electrical properties of a nano transistor. These changes generate detectable electronic signals. In the indirect detection, antibody-DNA conjugates are used to identify methylated DNA molecules. RNA signal molecules are generated through an in vitro transcription process. These RNA molecules are captured on the sensing surface change the electrical properties of nano transistor thereby generating detectable electronic signals.

IR detectors - Heterodyne and direct

Recent developments in the area of wide-bandwidth infrared detectors, both for direct and heterodyne detection, are reviewed with emphasis on the differences and tradeoffs between photodiodes and photoconductors. In the direct-detection mode, where amplifier noise is an important consideration, the state-of-the-art detection noise equivalent power is approximated by 500 (B/10 MHz) pW. At short wavelengths (less than 1.7 micron), avalanche photodiodes offer superior performance, with a detection noise equivalent power of about 50 (B/10 MHz) pW. In heterodyne operation, near-ideal sensitivities of about 0.3 (B/10 MHz) pW have been achieved with 77K photodiodes. At 10 microns, HgCdTe photoconductors offer very good heterodyne performance at elevated temperatures: 2 (B/10 MHz) pW at 195 K and potentially 3 (B/10 MHz) pW at 250 K.

A modification of the fusion model for log polar coordinates

The fusion mechanism for application in stereo analysis of range restricted the depth of field and therefore required a shift variant mechanism in the peripheral area to find disparity. Misregistration was prevented by restricting the disparity detection range to a neighborhood spanned by the directional edge detection filters. This transformation was essentially accomplished by a nonuniform resampling of the original image in a horizontal direction. While this is easily implemented for digital processing, the approach does not (in the peripheral vision area) model the log-conformal mapping which is known to occur in the human mechanism. This paper therefore modifies the original fusion concept in the peripheral area to include the polar exponential grid-to-log conformal tesselation. Examples of the fusion process resulting in accurate disparity values are given.

A Universal Algorithm for the Detection of Bi-directional Gage Output Characteristics

A universal algorithm was developed that may be used to assess the bi-directional characteristics of the gage outputs of a wind tunnel strain-gage balance. The algorithm assumes that balance loads and gage outputs are described in the design format of the balance. It can also be applied to balance calibration data that is processed by using either the Iterative Method or the Non-Iterative Method. The algorithm uses an estimate of the bi-directional part of a gage output at load capacity as input. In addition, the statistical significance of the principle absolute value term in the regression model of either the gage output or the related primary load component is determined. A gage output is assumed to be bi-directional if two conditions are fulfilled: the bi-directional part of the output at load capacity exceeds 0.5 percent of the maximum output at load capacity; the p-value of the principle absolute value term of the regression model of the balance data is less than the threshold of 0.001. Data from the calibration of two six-component force balances and one five-component semi-span balance are used to illustrate the application of the universal detection algorithm.

Optical communications and a comparison of optical technologies for a high data rate return link from Mars

The important principles of direct- and heterodyne-detection optical free-space communications are reviewed. Signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) and bit-error-rate (BER) expressions are derived for both the direct-detection and heterodyne-detection optical receivers. For the heterodyne system, performance degradation resulting from received-signal and local oscillator-beam misalignment and laser phase noise is analyzed. Determination of interfering background power from local and extended background sources is discussed. The BER performance of direct- and heterodyne-detection optical links in the presence of Rayleigh-distributed random pointing and tracking errors is described. Finally, several optical systems employing Nd:YAG, GaAs, and CO2 laser sources are evaluated and compared to assess their feasibility in providing high-data-rate (10- to 1000-Mbps) Mars-to-Earth communications. It is shown that the root mean square (rms) pointing and tracking accuracy is a critical factor in defining the system transmitting laser-power requirements and telescope size and that, for a given rms error, there is an optimum telescope aperture size that minimizes the required power. The results of the analysis conducted indicate that, barring the achievement of extremely small rms pointing and tracking errors (less than 0.2 microrad), the two most promising types of optical systems are those that use an Nd:YAG laser (lambda = 1.064 microns) and high-order pulse position modulator (PPM) and direct detection, and those that use a CO2 laser (lambda = 10.6 microns) and phase shifting keying homodyne modulation and coherent detection. For example, for a PPM order of M = 64 and an rms pointing accuracy of 0.4 microrad, an Nd:YAG system can be used to implement a 100-Mbps Mars link with a 40-cm transmitting telescope, a 20-W laser, and a 10-m receiving photon bucket. Under the same conditions, a CO2 system would require 3-m transmitting and receiving telescopes and a 32-W laser to implement such a link. Other types of optical systems, such as a semiconductor laser systems, are impractical in the presence of large rms pointing errors because of the high power requirements of the 100-Mbps Mars link, even when optimal-size telescopes are used.

Autogeneous Friction Stir Weld Lack-of-Penetration Defect Detection and Sizing Using Directional Conductivity Measurements with MWM Eddy Current Sensor

Al 2195-T8 plate specimens containing Friction Stir Welds (FSW), provided by Lockheed Martin, were inspected using directional conductivity measurements with the MWM sensor. Sensitivity to lack-of-penetration (LOP) defect size has been demonstrated. The feature used to determine defect size was the normalized longitudinal component of the MWM conductivity measurements. This directional conductivity component was insensitive to the presence of a discrete crack. This permitted correlation of MWM conductivity measurements with the LOP defect size as changes in conductivity were apparently associated with metallurgical features within the first 0.020 in. of the LOP defect zone. Transverse directional conductivity measurements also provided an indication of the presence of discrete cracks. Continued efforts are focussed on inspection of a larger set of welded panels and further refinement of LOP characterization tools.

Goal-directed ultrasound in the detection of long-bone fractures

BACKGROUND: New portable ultrasound (US) systems are capable of detecting fractures in the remote setting. However, the accuracy of ultrasound by physicians with minimal ultrasound training is unknown. METHODS: After one hour of standardized training, physicians with minimal US experience clinically evaluated patients presenting with pain and trauma to the upper arm or leg. The investigators then performed a long-bone US evaluation, recording their impression of fracture presence or absence. Results of the examination were compared with routine plain or computer aided radiography (CT). RESULTS: 58 patients were examined. The sensitivity and specificity of US were 92.9% and 83.3%, and of the physical examination were 78.6% and 90.0%, respectively. US provided improved sensitivity with less specificity compared with physical examination in the detection of fractures in long bones. CONCLUSION: Ultrasound scans by minimally trained clinicians may be used to rule out a long-bone fracture in patients with a medium to low probability of fracture.

A comparison of optical technologies for a high data rate Mars link

Several optical systems, based on Nd:YAG, GaAs, and CO2 laser sources and employing both direct and heterodyne detection, are analyzed in order to assess their feasibility in providing high data rate (10-1000 Mbps) Mars-to-earth communications. The rms pointing/tracking accuracy is shown to be a critical parameter in defining the Mars-earth optical link. Data obtained reveal that unless, extremely small rms pointing and tracking errors can be achieved (sigma less than .2 microrad), the most promising optical implementation appears to be the Nd:YAG laser using direct detection and high order PPM modulation.

Current Status and Perspectives to Detect Natural Hazards Using GNSS-Based Ionospheric Measurements

We discuss current status and new directions in detection of natural hazards generated ionospheric signatures using GNSS-based ionospheric measurements. By studying the propagation properties of ionospheric perturbations generated by natural hazards, and applying sophisticated physics-based modeling, we are on track to develop new techniques for detection of natural hazards that can greatly reduce damage to human lives and property. It is also expected that real-time ionospheric monitoring of TEC perturbations might become an integral part of existing natural hazards warning systems.

Polarimetric emission from anisotropic media for passive remote sensing of sea ice

The polarimetric emission from an anisotropic medium with applications to the passive microwave remote sensing of sea ice is investigated. Based on the fluctuation-dissipation theory, the Stokes vector is obtained for the thermally exicted electromagnetic radiation from an anisotropic object. By modeling sea ice as a layered anisotropic medium, the Stokes vector representing the polarimetric emission is illustrated for various geophysical conditions. It is found that the difference in the brightness temperatures measured at two surface temperatures is correlated with the thickness of the sea ice. For cases where the c-axis of sea ice is aligned or not random in the horizontal plane, the calculated brightness temperatures show a periodic variation when plotted as a function of the azimuthal angle of the observation direction, indicating that the polarimetric Stokes parameters can be used to detect the direction of c-axes in sea ice.

Infrared and the search for extrasolar planets

Search for evidence concerning the existence of extrasolar planets will involve both indirect detection as well as direct (imaging). Indirect detection may be possible using ground based instrumentation on the Keck telescope, Imaging probably will require an orbiting system. Characterizing other planets for complex molecules will require a large orbiting or lunar-based telescope or inteferometer. Cryogenic infrared techniques appear to be necessary. Planning for a NASA ground and space-based program, Toward Other Planet Systems (TOPS), is proceeding.

Directed Design of Experiments for Validating Probability of Detection Capability of NDE Systems (DOEPOD)

Directed Design of Experiments for Validating Probability of Detection Capability of NDE Systems (DOEPOD) Manual v.1.2 The capability of an inspection system is established by applications of various methodologies to determine the probability of detection (POD). One accepted metric of an adequate inspection system is that there is 95% confidence that the POD is greater than 90% (90/95 POD). Design of experiments for validating probability of detection capability of nondestructive evaluation (NDE) systems (DOEPOD) is a methodology that is implemented via software to serve as a diagnostic tool providing detailed analysis of POD test data, guidance on establishing data distribution requirements, and resolving test issues. DOEPOD demands utilization of observance of occurrences. The DOEPOD capability has been developed to provide an efficient and accurate methodology that yields observed POD and confidence bounds for both Hit-Miss or signal amplitude testing. DOEPOD does not assume prescribed POD logarithmic or similar functions with assumed adequacy over a wide range of flaw sizes and inspection system technologies, so that multi-parameter curve fitting or model optimization approaches to generate a POD curve are not required. DOEPOD applications for supporting inspector qualifications is included.

Apparatus and method for determining the position of a radiant energy source

The position of a terrestrial RF source is determined from a geostationary, synchronous satellite by scanning the beam of a narrow beam width antenna in first and second orthogonal directions over a region including the source. The peak level of energy transduced by the antenna in each of the scanning directions is detected and correlated with the scanning position of the beam by feeding the output of a detector responsive to the transduced signal to an indicator of an X-Y recorder. The X and Y axes of the recorder are scanned in synchronism with the beam being respectively scanned in the first and second directions to form X and Y traces on which are indicated the detected peak position in each of the scanning directions. The source position is determined from an intersection of lines drawn parallel to the X and Y axes and including the detected peak position of each trace.
