Frontal predominance of a relative increase in sleep delta and theta EEG activity after sleep loss in humans

The effect of sleep deprivation (40 h) on topographic and temporal aspects of electroencephalographic (EEG) activity during sleep was investigated by all night spectral analysis in six young volunteers. The sleep-deprivation-induced increase of EEG power density in the delta and theta frequencies (1-7 Hz) during nonREM sleep, assessed along the antero-posterior axis (midline: Fz, Cz, Pz, Oz), was significantly larger in the more frontal derivations (Fz, Cz) than in the more parietal derivations (Pz, Oz). This frequency-specific frontal predominance was already present in the first 30 min of recovery sleep, and dissipated in the course of the 8-h sleep episode. The data demonstrate that the enhancement of slow wave EEG activity during sleep following extended wakefulness is most pronounced in frontal cortical areas.

Technical Characteristics and Accuracy Capabilities of Delta Differential One-Way Ranging (DeltaDOR) as a Spacecraft Navigation Tool

The technique of determining spacecraft angular position by Delta Differential One-Way Ranging (DeltaDOR) is described. The dependence of measurement accuracy on parameters which define the spacecraft signal spectrum is shown. An illustration of DeltaDOR measurement accuracy, using the Mars Observer spacecraft, is presented. Guidelines for specifying spacecraft tone spectra are presented based on typical accuracy and ambiguity resolution needs, on frequency allocation for deep space tracking, on the efficient use of spacecraft signal power, and on the efficient use of ground tracking resources.

Precision Formation Delta-V Requirements for Distributed Platforms in Earth Orbit

Distributed spacecraft flying in formation can overcome the resolution limitations of monolithic, Earth-sensing systems. However, formation spacecraft must now expend fuel to counteract disturbances and the gravity gradients between spacecraft. We consider three different formation architectures and determine the (Delta)(nu) required to maintain relative positions at accuracies from 0.1 to 10 m (1(sigma)). The three architectures considered are: (i) Leader/Follower, in which individual spacecraft controllers track with respect to a passive, leader spacecraft, (ii) Center of Formation, in which individual spacecraft controllers track with respect to the geometric center of the formation, and (iii) Iterated Virtual Structure, in which a formation template is fit each timestep and individual spacecraft controllers track with respect to the fitted template.

The Chandra Delta Ori Large Project: Occultation Measurements of the Shocked Gas tn the Nearest Eclipsing O-Star Binary

Delta Ori is the nearest massive, single-lined eclipsing binary (O9.5 II + B0.5III). As such it serves as a fundamental calibrator of the mass-radius-luminosity relation in the upper HR diagram. It is also the only eclipsing O-type binary system which is bright enough to be observable with the CHANDRA gratings in a reasonable exposure. Studies of resolved X-ray line complexes provide tracers of wind mass loss rate and clumpiness; occultation by the X-ray dark companion of the line emitting region can provide direct spatial information on the location of the X-ray emitting gas produced by shocks embedded in the wind of the primary star. We obtained phase-resolved spectra with Chandra in order to determine the level of phase-dependent vs. secular variability in the shocked wind. Along with the Chandra observations we obtained simultaneous photometry from space with the Canadian MOST satellite to help understand the relation between X-ray and photospheric variability.

3D Electromagnetic Plasma Particle Simulations on the Intel Delta Parallel Computer

A three-dimensional electromagnetic PIC code has been developed on the 512 node Intel Touchstone Delta MIMD parallel computer. This code is based on the General Concurrent PIC algorithm which uses a domain decomposition to divide the computation among the processors. The 3D simulation domain can be partitioned into 1-, 2-, or 3-dimensional subdomains. Particles must be exchanged between processors as they move among the subdomains.

Imaging the Future Threats of the Sand Dunes Along the Northwestern Coast of Nile Delta Using SAR

Although the Sand dunes screen the coastal cities from the sand dunes hazards and their infrastructures from rising sea levels and storms, they might threaten and hide the surrounding developmental projects. Thus, imaging these coastal dunes' internal anatomy and dynamics are crucial to protect the environment. In this study, the Optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images were processed and integrated with field observations and surveys to extract information about the past, current, and future behavior of coastal dunes in the Nile Delta-Northwest sector. A conventional change detection method using the supervised Landsat-8 images for the years 2015 and 2017 were generated to show a rapid change in the sand dune cover, where the high-resolution images of Google Earth were used to digitize the dune crests and measure its encroachment rate, which has been reached about 4 m/year with the NW–SE direction. The full-polarimetric ALOS/PALSAR-2 images from the years 2015 and 2017 show very low coherence for the sand dunes, which means these dunes are dynamic, where the changes in both power and phase imbalances of different dune fields during the investigated years (2015 and 2017) show high differences in values, which reached 40 dB and 0.06°, respectively. Finally, the extracted radar facies from the field survey show two successive groups of coastal sand dunes show a decline in the heavy minerals content to a level that might threaten the properties at the shoreline due to sea level rise and wave storms if mitigation actions are not taken place soon.

Sediment transport and morphodynamic changes due to upstream variation and sea level rise on the Western Mekong Delta, Vietnam

The hydrological and morphological dynamics across the Vietnam Mekong Delta (VMD) coastline are increasingly shaped by human interventions and climate change, affecting the sustainability of socio-economic environments. This study employs the TELEMAC-MASCARET modeling system (TELEMAC-2D, TOMAWAC, and SISYPHE modules) to simulate hydrodynamics, sediment transport, and morphological changes for a 10-year period under baseline (SC1) and future climate (SC2) scenarios, considering wave climatology of Northeast (NEM) and Southwest monsoons (SWM). The results of sedimentation and erosion were analyzed across five key coastal zones from Ca Mau Cape (KV1) to Ha Tien (KV5). Model results highlight distinct seasonal patterns of sediment redistribution shaped by monsoonal flows, wave action, and seabed morphology. During the NEM, sediment deposition is concentrated near estuarine zones, while the SWM favors offshore sediment accumulation due to perpendicular wave actions, and shallow, gently sloping bathymetry that dissipates wave energy. Coastal erosion predominantly occurs at convex shoreline features subjected to stronger coastal currents, particularly in fine-grained sediment areas. Under future sea level rise and land subsidence scenarios, reduced flow velocities lead to lower bottom shear stress, promoting deposition and mitigating erosion problems despite increased wave energy. Besides that, sediment transport analyses across 14 cross-sections (C-S) reveal a southward trend during the NEM and a northward reversal during the SWM, with upstream sediment reductions primarily influencing near-estuarine zones and exerting minimal impact beyond the mid-coastal regions. Furthermore, these findings advance the understanding of sediment redistribution processes under climate change and seasonal change, and provide a scientific basis for adaptive coastal management and sustainable development.

Evaluation of regional transport of PM2.5 during severe atmospheric pollution episodes in the western Yangtze River Delta, China

During winter 2018, the 16 prefecture-level cities in Anhui Province, Western Yangtze River Delta region, China had very high PM2.5 concentrations and prolonged pollution days. The impact of regional transport in the formation, accumulation, as well as dispersion of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in Anhui Province was very significant. This study quantified and analyzed the vertical transport of PM2.5 in three major cities (Hefei, Fuyang, and Suzhou) of Anhui Province in January and July 2018 using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model coupled with the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model. The results of the inter-regional transport of PM2.5 revealed the dominant transport pathways for the three cities. The flux mainly flowed into Fuyang from Henan (2.23 and 1.42 kt/day in January and July, respectively) and Bozhou (1.96 and 1.21 kt/day in January and July, respectively), while the main flux from Fuyang flowed into Henan (-2.15 kt/day) and Lu'an (-1.91 kt/day) in January and Henan (-0.34 kt/day) and Bozhou (-0.29 kt/day) in July. In addition, the dominant transport pathways and the heights at which they occurred were identified: the northwest-southeast and northeast-south pathways in both winter and summer at both lower (?300 m) and higher (=300 m) levels for Fuyang; the northwest-south and northeast-southwest pathways in winter (at both lower and upper levels) and northwest-east and northeast-southwest pathways in summer at lower and upper levels for Hefei; and the northwest-southeast and northeast-south pathways in both winter (from 50 m up to the top level) and summer (between 100 and 300 m) for Suzhou. Furthermore, the intensities of daily PM2.5 transport fluxes in Fuyang during the atmospheric pollution episode (APE1) were stronger than the monthly average. These results show that joint emission controls across multiple cities along the identified pathways are urgently needed to reduce winter episodes.

Charge ordering and structural transition in the new organic conductor {delta}'-(BEDT-TTF){sub 2}CF{sub 3}CF{sub 2}SO{sub 3}.

We report structural, transport, and optical properties and electronic structure calculations of the delta'-(BEDT-TTF) 2CF3CF2SO3 (BEDT-TTF = bis(ethylenedithio)-tetrathiafulvalene) organic conductor that has been synthesized by electrocrystallization. Electronic structure calculations demonstrate the quasi-one-dimensional Fermi surfaces of the compound, while the optical spectra are characteristic for a dimer-Mott insulator. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements reveal the structural phase transition at 200 K from the ambient-temperature monoclinic P2(1)/m phase to the low-temperature orthorhombic Pca2(1) phase, while the resistivity measurements clearly show the first order semiconductor-semiconductor transition at the same temperature. This transition is accompanied by charge-ordering as it is confirmed by splitting of charge-sensitive vibrational modes observed in the Raman and infrared spectra. The horizontal stripe charge-order pattern is suggested based on the crystal structure, band structure calculations, and optical spectra.

..delta..-Learning of High-Fidelity Electronic Structure Using Graph Neural Networks with Modified Node-Level Features

In this work, we present a ..delta..-learning approach for predicting the eigenvalues calculated with the hybrid functional HSE06 (..epsilon..nkHSE) for a set of metal and nitrogen doped graphene catalysts (MNCs) from Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) inputs. The model presented here incorporates electronic scalar features along with structural information in a graph neural network (GNN). In particular, the PBE eigenvalues for different bands and k-points and orbital-resolved projectors are combined with the applied potential as node-level features along with structural information within the Atomistic Line Graph Neural Network (ALIGNN) architecture. These features enable flexibility for systems with electrified interfaces, such as in electrocatalysts and achieves mean absolute error (MAE) of less than 0.1 eV. The machine learning model reported here achieves a strong generalization to left-out adsorbates (MAE = 0.074 eV) and leave-one-chemical-space-out (MAE = 0.08 eV) and completely left-out metals (MAE = 0.072 eV), confirming the robustness of the machine learning (ML) model in predicting ..epsilon..nkHSE.
