During the first two decades of the twenty-first century, we analyze the expansion of 23urban land cover, urban heat island (UHI), and urban pollution island (UPI) in the Houston 24Metropolitan Area (HMA) using land cover classifications derived from Landsat and land/aerosol 25products from NASA's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer. Our approach involves 26both direct utilization and fusion with in situobservations for a comprehensive characterization.27We also examined how social vulnerability within the HMA changed during the study period and 28whether the synergy of UHI, UPI,and social vulnerability enhances environmental inequalities.

Curbside activity has not traditionally been represented in transportation network modeling in high fidelity. Growing demand for curbside mean that prevailing practices are becoming increasingly untenable. Through outreach to expert practitioners, we established the state-of-practice and needs for quantitative modeling. We proposed a new modeling framework to allow curbspace managers to make optimal decisions about space allocation between legacy and emerging uses. Proposed future work will take the proposed approach and refine it to be suitable for standardized use by practitioners – to facilitate mobility and energy optimization through smart curbside management.
COVID-19 has impacted human activities ranging from food delivery habits to major moving and travel decisions. It’s clear that multiple pandemic-related factors have influenced millions of relocation decisions by Americans (e.g. health risk, financial pressures, more space, employment). There are positive economic and social outcomes of this influence (e.g. remote work and education) enabling more affordable living and opportunity. This paper addresses COVID-19 impacts on mobility, especially the mobility that involves permanent relocation from place to place. Survey design and data analysis with U-Haul targeted customers in Austin, New York, San Diego, and Chicago to understand mobility, new moving dynamics, and motivations.
