Ultralow Thermal Conductivity, Multiband Electronic Structure and High Thermoelectric Figure of Merit in TlCuSe

The entanglement of lattice thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, and Seebeck coefficient complicates the process of optimizing thermoelectric performance in most thermoelectric materials. Semiconductors with ultralow lattice thermal conductivities and high power factors at the same time are scarce but fundamentally interesting and practically important for energy conversion. In this work, an intrinsic p-type semiconductor TlCuSe that has an intrinsically ultralow thermal conductivity (0.25 W m -1 K -1 ), a high power factor (11.6 μ W cm -1 K -2 ), and a high figure of merit, ZT (1.9) at 643 K is described. The weak chemical bonds, originating from the filled antibonding orbitals p-d* within the edge-sharing CuSe 4 tetrahedra and long Tl-Se bonds in the PbClF-type structure, in conjunction with the large atomic mass of Tl lead to an ultralow sound velocity. Strong anharmonicity, coming from Tl + lone-pair electrons, boosts phonon-phonon scattering rates and further suppresses lattice thermal conductivity. The multiband character of the valence band structure contributing to power factor enhancement benefits from the lone-pair electrons of Tl + as well, which modify the orbital character of the valence bands, and pushes the valence band maximum off the Gamma-point, increasing the band degeneracy. The results provide new insight on the rational design of thermoelectric materials.

Charge Density Wave Order and Electronic Phase Transitions in a Dilute d ‐Band Semiconductor

Abstract As one of the most fundamental physical phenomena, charge density wave (CDW) order predominantly occurs in metallic systems such as quasi‐1D metals, doped cuprates, and transition metal dichalcogenides, where it is well understood in terms of Fermi surface nesting and electron–phonon coupling mechanisms. On the other hand, CDW phenomena in semiconducting systems, particularly at the low carrier concentration limit, are less common and feature intricate characteristics, which often necessitate the exploration of novel mechanisms, such as electron–hole coupling or Mott physics, to explain. In this study, an approach combining electrical transport, synchrotron X‐ray diffraction, and density‐functional theory calculations is used to investigate CDW order and a series of hysteretic phase transitions in a dilute d ‐band semiconductor, BaTiS 3 . These experimental and theoretical findings suggest that the observed CDW order and phase transitions in BaTiS 3 may be attributed to both electron–phonon coupling and non‐negligible electron–electron interactions in the system. This work highlights BaTiS 3 as a unique platform to explore CDW physics and novel electronic phases in the dilute filling limit and opens new opportunities for developing novel electronic devices.

Colossal Optical Anisotropy from Atomic-Scale Modulations

Materials with large birefringence (Δn, where n is the refractive index) are sought after for polarization control (e.g., in wave plates, polarizing beam splitters, etc.), nonlinear optics, micromanipulation, and as a platform for unconventional light–matter coupling, such as hyperbolic phonon polaritons. Layered 2D materials can feature some of the largest optical anisotropy; however, their use in most optical systems is limited because their optical axis is out of the plane of the layers and the layers are weakly attached. This work demonstrates that a bulk crystal with subtle periodic modulations in its structure—Sr 9/8 TiS 3 —is transparent and positive-uniaxial, with extraordinary index n e = 4.5 and ordinary index n o = 2.4 in the mid- to far-infrared. The excess Sr, compared to stoichiometric SrTiS 3 , results in the formation of TiS 6 trigonal-prismatic units that break the chains of face-sharing TiS 6 octahedra in SrTiS 3 into periodic blocks of five TiS 6 octahedral units. The additional electrons introduced by the excess Sr form highly oriented electron clouds, which selectively boost the extraordinary index n e and result in record birefringence (Δn > 2.1 with low loss). The connection between subtle structural modulations and large changes in refractive index suggests new categories of anisotropic materials and also tunable optical materials with large refractive-index modulation.

Dislocation‐Driven Formation of Oriented Macroperiodic Metastructures of Curved Single Crystal Lattices in Glass

Abstract Single crystals fabricated in glass by localized heating can develop uniquely deformed lattices stabilized by the surrounding amorphous medium. The development of lattice curvature appears to be intrinsic to the crystal growth process in some systems, while the result of the locally changing crystallography in others. In this work, a model laser‐fabricated rotating lattice Sb 2 S 3 crystal grown in stoichiometric glass is used to demonstrate fabrication of novel macroperiodic metastructures that utilize intrinsic lattice curvature superimposed with subtle crystallographic influences. The limited availability of slip systems drives the lattice curvature magnitude to vary with crystal growth direction, maximizing for lattices aligned with the predominant Burgers vector along with corresponding increases in dislocation density. Misaligned lattice orientations form smaller secondary lattice curvatures arising from misaligned Burgers vectors with further elastic contributions. Over extended crystal growth, these secondary components align the lattice to rotate about either the <001> or <010> crystal axes forming repeating metastructures of lattice orientation with periodicity 20–160 microns in length. The mechanistic approach used in this work may be expanded to other systems with known slip systems to better understand and design macroperiodic metastructures.

Strong Valence Band Convergence to Enhance Thermoelectric Performance in PbSe with Two Chemically Independent Controls

We present an effective approach to favorably modify the electronic structure of PbSe using Ag doping coupled with SrSe or BaSe alloying. The Ag 4d states make a contribution to in the top of the heavy hole valence band and raise its energy. The Sr and Ba atoms diminish the contribution of Pb 6s2 states and decrease the energy of the light hole valence band. This electronic structure modification increases the density-of-states effective mass, and strongly enhances the thermoelectric performance. Furthermore, the Ag-rich nanoscale precipitates, discordant Ag atoms, and Pb/Sr, Pb/Ba point defects in the PbSe matrix work together to reduce the lattice thermal conductivity, resulting a record high average ZT avg of around 0.86 over 400–923 K.

Sr(Ag 1-x Li x ) 2 Se 2 and [Sr 3 Se 2 ][(Ag 1-x Li x ) 2 Se 2 ] Tunable Direct Band Gap Semiconductors

Synthesizing solids in molten fluxes enables the rapid diffusion of soluble species at temperatures lower than in solid-state reactions, leading to crystal formation of kinetically stable compounds. Here, in this study, we demonstrate the effectiveness of mixed hydroxide and halide fluxes in synthesizing complex Sr/Ag/Se in mixed LiOH/LiCl. We have accessed a series of two-dimensional Sr(Ag 1-x Li x ) 2 Se 2 layered phases. With increased LiOH/LiCl ratio or reaction temperature, Li partially substituted Ag to form solid solutions of Sr(Ag 1-x Li x ) 2 Se 2 with x up to 0.45. In addition, a new type of intergrowth compound [Sr 3 Se 2 ][(Ag 1-x Li x ) 2 Se 2 ] was synthesized upon further reaction of Sr(Ag 1-x Li x ) 2 Se 2 with SrSe. Both Sr(Ag 1-x Li x ) 2 Se 2 and [Sr 3 Se 2 ][(Ag 1-x Li x ) 2 Se 2 ] exhibit a direct band gap, which increases with increasing Li substitution (x). Therefore, the band gap of Sr(Ag 1-x Li x ) 2 Se 2 can be precisely tuned via fine-tuning x that is controlled by only the flux ratio and temperature.

Ag Alloying in Cu 2– y Ag y Ba(Ge,Sn)Se 4 Films and Photovoltaic Devices

Trigonal Cu 2 BaGe 1–x Sn x Se 4 (CBGTSe) has recently gained interest as a potential photovoltaic absorber to target mitigation of antisite defect formation in Cu 2 ZnSn(S,Se) 4 . This study examines partial substitution of Cu by Ag as a potential approach to tune the properties of Ag-incorporated CBGTSe in the following aspects: 1) phase stability and crystal structure as a function of Ag content; 2) film morphology and grain structure; 3) charge carrier properties; 4) band positions; and 5) charge carrier kinetics and recombination. Up to 20% of Cu can be substituted by Ag in CBGTSe, while above 20% a phase mixture appears. Increasing Ag content induces larger average grain size and reduced hole carrier densities. In contrast, photoelectron spectroscopy and photoluminescence measurements reveal negligible impact of Ag substitution on ionization potential (≈5.4 eV) and electron affinity (≈3.7 eV). Also, Ag content offers negligible impact on carrier lifetimes (few ns). Consistent with these fundamental properties, solar cells based on two different Ag/(Ag + Cu) ratios (≈0% and ≈20%) show comparable power conversion efficiencies (≈2.7–2.8%). Finally, these results indicate that CBGTSe films and solar cells may be less sensitive to Ag substitution compared to Cu 2 ZnSn(S,Se) 4 , at least at the current level of absorber and device optimization.

Direct Monte Carlo Simulations of Chemical Equilibrium Composition of Molecular Fluid Mixtures Under Shock Conditions

A new Monte Carlo simulation method is implemented which holds the number and kind of atoms constant rather than the number and kind of molecules for a molecular fluid mixture. Chemical reactions are allowed as a correlated move of atoms such as an interchange of atoms between molecules. Equilibrium chemical composition is determined as an average over the simulation along with equation of state quantities. Results are presented for N 2 + O 2 → 2NO at 30GPa and 3000K. The equilibrium composition is shown to be sensitive to the potentials between unlike species.

Improving charge transport in integrated MoO 3 /C electrode materials for water-in-salt energy storage systems by incorporating oxygen vacancies

Improvements in the charge storage properties of α-MoO 3 used as an electrode with a 30m ZnCl 2 water-in-salt electrolyte have been achieved by enhancements in electron and ion transport enabled by an inventive synthesis route. Electron transport was improved through the integration of MoO 3 with dopamine-derived carbon via a chemical preintercalation route, and enhanced ion transport was achieved by incorporating oxygen vacancies in MoO 3 structure through ethanol 2 reduction under hydrothermal conditions. Here, the presence of carbon was confirmed by corresponding D and G bands observed in Raman spectroscopy measurements. The presence of oxygen vacancies was proven through correlated XPS, TGA, Raman spectroscopy and XRD analyses, with the introduction of oxygen vacancies leading to an expanded interlayer region. Four-point probe measurements provided evidence of increased electronic conductivity due to the incorporation of carbon, and cyclic voltammetry-based charge storage mechanism analyses revealed increases in ion transport kinetics due to oxygen vacancy formation. Tuning the oxygen vacancy concentration is critical, as excessive concentrations of these point defects leads to structural instability and poor capacity retention. This work demonstrates the combined potential of carbon and oxygen vacancies in moderate concentrations to enhance the charge storage properties of transition metal oxides. The strategies developed in this study offer a path to the development of promising materials for high-rate, high-capacity, and long-duration electrochemical energy storage technologies.

Optoelectronic and material properties of solution-processed Earth-abundant Cu 2 BaSn(S, Se) 4 films for solar cell applications

Copper barium thioselenostannate, Cu 2 BaSnS 4-x Se x (CBTSSe), absorbers employ low-toxicity and abundant metals while offering low-cost manufacturing options, controllable stoichiometry and band gap tunability (from 2 eV at x = 0 to 1.55 eV at x = 3). CBTSSe can therefore be considered a prospective candidate for maintaining or improving upon the advantages of already commercialized Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se) 2 (CIGSSe) and CdTe absorbers. Here, we focus on solution-deposited stoichiometric CBTSSe films with band gap of 1.59 eV (x ≈ 3) and explore the fundamental film properties. Temperature- and excitation-dependent photoluminescence studies reveal a dominant defect emission at ~1.5 eV and a second deep defect feature at 1.15 eV. From time-resolved terahertz measurements, we find a charge carrier (electron and hole sum) mobility of ~140 cm 2 /Vs—i.e., comparable to values in CIGSSe or Cu 2 ZnSnS 4-x Se x (CZTSSe)—as well as a two-component minority carrier lifetime. A longer-lived lifetime component (~2 ns) arises from bulk recombination. However, strong recombination at the (bare) surface leads to a ~50 ps lifetime, inferior to state-of-the-art CIGSSe or CZTSSe absorbers. This recombination issue may worsen for CBTSSe/CdS interfaces, due to a cliff-like band alignment with 0.6 eV band offset, as revealed by ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy. A low number of charge carriers within the absorber further contributes to a high series resistance. Employing these films, we also report the highest performance achieved from solution-processed trigonal CBTSSe thin-film photovoltaic devices, with open circuit voltage, short-circuit current density, fill factor and efficiency of 470 mV, 14.3 mA/cm 2 , 43.6% and 2.9%, respectively. The physical measurements provided on the stoichiometric solution-processed CBTSSe absorber further point to critical areas for future improvement of CBTSSe and related photovoltaic cells in the quest for higher efficiency devices based on earth abundant metals.

Molecular Programming of Diorganyl Dichalcogenides for Rational Nanocrystal Design

Soft-chemistry nanocrystal synthesis leverages low-temperature, solution-phase reactions to access materials that can be kinetically stabilized rather than thermodynamically favored. Under such mild conditions, reaction pathways are governed not only by precursor composition but also by the molecular details that dictate how reactive atomic species are generated and delivered. Furthermore, harnessing this kinetic sensitivity offers a powerful opportunity: by deliberately programming precursor reactivity, nanocrystal composition, structure, and morphology can be rationally designed rather than empirically discovered.

Crystal Growth of Quaternary Rare Earth Selenosilicates by Using the Flux-Assisted Boron Chalcogen Mixture Method: Investigation of Their Magnetic and Optical Properties

A series of rare earth magnesium selenosilicates, RE3Mg 0.5 SiSe 7 (RE = Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy) were obtained as single crystal using the flux assisted boron chalcogen mixture (BCM) method. The structures of the crystals were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The RE3Mg 0.5 SiSe 7 series crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system in the space group P6 3 . Polycrystalline powders were synthesized to perform physical property measurements. Magnetic measurements over the 2–300 K temperature range reveal that Ce 3 Mg 0.5 SiSe 7 and Gd 3 Mg 0.5 SiSe 7 exhibit paramagnetic behavior with negative Weiss constants (θ W = −14.50, θ W = −6.13 K, respectively). The optical properties of RE 3 Mg 0.5 SiSe 7 (RE = Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd) were measured by ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) diffuse reflectance. Density functional theory (DFT) electronic structure calculations were performed. Furthermore, a second harmonic generation measurement was performed on a polycrystalline powder of Ce 3 Mg 0.5 SiSe 7 and was found to be SHG active with an efficiency of 0.11 times the standard potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP).

Crystal Growth of Quaternary RE 2 EuSi 2 S 8 ( RE = Ce–Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb) Using Flux-Assisted Boron Chalcogen Mixture (BCM) Method: Investigation of Magnetic and Luminescence Properties

A series of quaternary rare-earth containing thiosilicates with the general formula RE 2 EuSi 2 S 8 (RE = Ce–Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb) has been synthesized via the flux-assisted boron chalcogen mixture (BCM) crystal growth method. High-quality single crystals were obtained, and their crystal structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The RE 2 EuSi 2 S 8 series crystallizes in the trigonal system, adopting the space group R-3c. Polycrystalline samples were employed for physical property measurements, including magnetic susceptibility measurements, UV–visible diffuse reflectance, and photoluminescent response. Magnetic data of RE 2 EuSi 2 S 8 ( RE = Ce, Nd, and Gd) were collected over the 2–300 K temperature range. The samples were paramagnetic behavior with negative Weiss constants (θ W = −11.05, −10.55, and −1.35 K respectively). Their thermal stability was investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Optical band gaps, estimated from diffuse reflectance spectra, were determined to be 2.2(1) eV for Ce 2 EuSi 2 S 8 , 1.8(1) eV for Nd 2 EuSi 2 S 8 , and 1.7(1) eV for Gd 2 EuSi 2 S 8 respectively. Finally, photoluminescence measurements were collected on Ce 2 EuSi 2 S 8 and Tb 2 EuSi 2 S 8 single crystals.

Thermal and Electronic Properties of Ba 2 MnSe 3

The structural, thermal, and electronic properties of Ba 2 MnSe 3 were investigated. Analysis of the low-temperature heat capacity revealed a low Debye temperature and a low average speed of sound that, together with the bonding in this material, result in a low thermal conductivity over a relatively large temperature range. Density functional theory and calculated electron localization were employed to investigate the electronic structure and bonding. Absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy measurements corroborated our calculations and revealed a direct band gap of 1.75 eV. This study expands on our understanding of the physical properties of this material and reveals previously unascertained properties, the knowledge of which is imperative for any potential application of interest.

Synthesis of Tunable SnS-TaS 2 Nanoscale Superlattices

Nanoscale superlattices represent a compelling platform for designed materials as the specific identity and spatial arrangement of constituent layers can lead to tunable properties. A number of kinetically stabilized, nonepitaxial superlattices with almost limitless structural tunability have been reported in telluride and selenide chemistries but have not yet been extended to sulfides. Here, we present SnS-TaS 2 nanoscale superlattices with tunable layer architecture. Layered amorphous precursors are prepared as thin films programmed to mimic the targeted superlattice; subsequent low temperature annealing activates self-assembly into crystalline nanocomposites. We investigate structure and composition of superlattices comprised of monolayers of TaS 2 and 3–7 monolayers of SnS per repeating unit. Furthermore, a graded precursor preparation approach is introduced, allowing stabilization of superlattices with multiple stacking sequences in a single preparation. Controlled synthesis of the architecture of nanoscale superlattices is a critical path toward tuning their exotic properties and enabling integration with electronic, optical, or quantum devices.
