Coupling Thermomechanical Processing and Alloy Design to Improve Textures in Mg-Zn-Ca Sheet Alloys

Abstract The effect of Ca and Zn additions on the microstructure and texture evolution during thermomechanical processing of Mg-Zn-Ca sheet alloys was systematically investigated and quantified. Plane strain compression testing in a Gleeble thermomechanical simulator was used to physically simulate a 10-pass rolling schedule, while allowing for careful control and monitoring of the processing parameters. Textures in the as-deformed ternary alloy samples demonstrate a weak maximum basal intensity and spreading in the transverse direction. Increasing the Zn content to 3.2 wt.% in the ternary alloys resulted in samples that exhibited weak textures in the as-deformed state. Importantly, static recrystallization (SRX) during post-deformation annealing of these alloys promoted a desirable annular texture, with the c -axis tipped from the normal direction and a lower basal texture intensity. The evolution in texture during SRX is associated with as-deformed microstructures with broad grain orientation spreads and a low degree of recrystallization.

Chemical and environmental stability of monazite-cheralite solid solutions Ln 1-2 x Ca x Th x PO 4 (Ln = Pr, Nd; x = 0–0.15): A thermodynamic study

Monazite-cheralite ceramics are a promising waste form for actinides. To elucidate the long-term behavior of this matrix in aqueous solutions, this study measured thermodynamic data for Th-rhabdophanes Ln 1-2 x Ca x Th x PO 4 ·nH 2 O (with Ln = Pr, Nd; x = 0–0.15) and the associated anhydrous monazite-cheralites Ln 1-2 x Ca x Th x PO 4 . Further, solubility experiments at 298K and high temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry were combined for calculation of ΔG$^°_f$, ΔH$^°_f$ and S$^°_m$ of Th-rhabdophanes and associated monazite-cheralites. Standard solubility constants were employed in a geochemical simulation using the PHREEQC software, the results of which confirmed the high chemical stability of the monazite-cheralite phases and supported their use as a specific conditioning matrix for the long-term immobilization of actinides.

Unraveling the nature of Fe-doping mediated inter- and intra-chain interactions in Ca 3 Co 2 O 6

The structural and magnetic properties of quasi-one-dimensional (1D) spin-chain compounds Ca 3 Co 2-x Fe x O 6 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3) synthesized by a sol-gel method have been systematically studied by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), neutron powder diffraction (NPD), dc and ac magnetization measurements. The samples adopt a rhombohedral crystal structure with the space group R-3c in a temperature range of 5–100 K. Fe ions are found to locate at the trigonal prism Co2 crystallographic sites. Fe doping converts some of low-spin Co 3+ ions at Co1 octahedral sites into Co 2+ ions. For the high-temperature paramagnetic phase, the Curie paramagnetic temperature θp changes its sign from positive to negative at x = 0.2, implying that the dominant magnetic interaction is driven from ferromagnetic (FM) to antiferromagnetic (AFM) upon Fe substitution. A partial low-spin to high-spin state crossover of the Co1 ions is observed at high Fe-doping level x = 0.3. All the samples exhibit a long-range spin-density wave (SDW) AFM ordering below TN, followed by a spin-glass-like transition at Tf. These low-temperature magnetic phases were significantly suppressed upon Fe doping. The Fe substitution in Ca 3 Co 2-x Fe x O 6 weakened both intrachain and interchain magnetic interactions, caused by enhanced magnetic disorder due to the different magnetic characters of Ising Co and Heisenberg Fe spins.

Nickel B-site substitution in bulk Sr 1-x Ca x FeO 3 perovskite oxygen carriers: Benefits and limitations

We report oxygen (O 2 ) storage materials often rely on the presence of cobalt (Co) to reduce the thermodynamic penalty and increase the kinetics necessary for efficient O 2 storage and release. In this work, we investigate nickel (Ni) as an alternative B-site dopant in Sr 1-x Ca x FeO 3 to identify Co-free carriers that still show improved kinetics at low temperatures. In fact, we show a substantial increase in the reversible O2 release rate through mild Ni B-site substitution (y = 0.06) in select Sr 1-x Ca x Fe 1-y Ni y O 3 systems at 400 to 500 °C, reaching 2.00 wt.% O 2 release up to approximately 75% faster than Ni-free systems. To explain the role of Ni in these systems, we use density functional theory to calculate the O 2 vacancy (V O ) formation energy from separate metal-oxygen (M-O) bonding and relaxation components. We computationally show elongated Ni-O bonds are directly responsible for the decrease in V O upon Ni substitution.

Single crystal growth and characterization of new Zintl phase Ca 9 Zn 3.1 In 0.9 Sb 9

Complex Zintl phases have yielded a large variety of promising new thermoelectric materials. Here we report the discovery of the new Zintl phase Ca 9 (Zn 1– x In x ) 4 Sb 9 ( x ~ 0.9), needle-like crystals of which were serendipitously obtained from an In- and Sb-rich flux. Although its composition is reminiscent of Ca 9 Zn 4+ x Sb 9 , an excellent thermoelectric material with zT > 1, the substitution of In on the Zn site leads to the formation of an entirely new structure type. Single crystal X-ray diffraction revealed a structure characterized by T Sb 4 tetrahedra ( T = statistically disordered Zn and In atoms) and ZnSb 3 triangular units, which share common corners to form [ T 4 Sb 9 ] 18– polyanions. The average structure was found to have hexagonal symmetry. The valence electron count in this heavily-disordered structure appears to follows the Zintl-Klemm rules, suggesting semiconducting behavior. Single crystal electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient measurements support this conclusion, suggesting that the as-grown crystals are degenerate p -type semiconductors.

The 12-layer trimer-based hexagonal perovskite Cs 4 Ca 0.7 Mn 3.3 Cl 12

Here, we describe the crystal structure and basic magnetic properties of Cs 4 Ca 0.7 Mn 3.3 Cl 12 , a previously unreported twelve layer (12L-) hexagonal (R-3m) chloride perovskite. Its crystal structure features face sharing MnCl 6 octahedra that form Mn 3 Cl 12 trimers. The trimers, which form a triangular array, are separated by corner sharing to layers of disordered single Ca(Mn)Cl 6 octahedra. The decreased intratrimer Mn–Mn distance yields stronger magnetic coupling within trimers than between trimers. The dominant magnetic interactions are antiferromagnetic (θ CW = –105 K), the effective magnetic moment per Mn 2+ is 6.5 μ B , and potential signatures of magnetic frustration are observed. Behavior consistent with short- and long-range magnetic order is exhibited at approximately 37 and 0.7 K, respectively.

Evaluation of high-temperature properties of binary, eutectic Ni-X alloys (X = B, Ca, Ce, La, Y, Zr)

We investigated the high-temperature behavior of binary eutectic nickel-base alloys with low-solubility elements, towards developing alloys with new combinations of structural and functional (e.g. thermal or corrosion) properties. Based on thermodynamic screening, we cast binary near-eutectic Ni-B, Ni-Ca, Ni-Ce, Ni-La, Ni-Y, and Ni-Zr alloys and characterized their microstructure and high-temperature properties. All alloys (except Ni-Ca) contain a fine eutectic microstructure, containing submicron alternating lamellae of γ-Ni and continuous intermetallic phases. The eutectic microstructure did not significantly coarsen at 700°C (except for Ni-B), but measurably coarsened in all alloys at 900°C, most quickly in Ni-B, followed by Ni-Ce, Ni-La, Ni-Y, and Ni-Zr. Coarsening in these alloys occurs by fault migration; diffusion within the intermetallic, and its interfacial energy, likely influence coarsening kinetics. At room-temperature, all alloys possess negligible ductility due to the continuous, brittle intermetallic. At 700 and 900°C, the Ni-Zr alloy showed the best combination of strength and ductility. Oxidation experiments at 900°C on Ni-Zr and Ni-Ce revealed heavy internal oxidation of the continuous intermetallic phase. Overall, the Ni-Zr alloy showed good high-temperature coarsening resistance and strength, though ductility and oxidation resistance require improvement for use in structural applications. Possible routes for improving alloy properties via additive manufacturing are discussed.

Prediction of softening kinetics and recrystallization texture in non-isothermally annealed bulged tubes using CPFEM and CA models

A hierarchically coupled cellular automata (CA) model, crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM), and thermal finite element (FE) model is developed to predict the softening kinetics of the bulged steel tube during non-isothermal annealing. Through the developed model, the kinetics of softening mechanisms including static recovery (SRV) and static recrystallization (SRX), as well as the recrystallization texture are predicted. Later, the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kohnogorov (JMAK) model based on the predicted SRX data is developed to interpret the recrystallization behavior of the material. To perform this study, diverse experimental tests including tube hydroforming (THF), annealing, uniaxial tensile test, hardness test, as well as microstructure observations through optical microscopy and Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) tests on steel tube are performed. The obtained experimental data are utilized to calibrate and verify the implemented CPFEM model for simulation of THF process, thermal FE model for prediction of the local temperature over annealing time, and CA algorithm for modeling of the softening kinetics and texture evolution throughout the annealing process. The study shows that the predicted deformation characteristics, softening kinetics, recrystallization texture and temperature profile during non-isothermal annealing are in good agreement with experimental data. During the annealing process, a total of four stages for the kinetics of softening mechanisms is observed: No softening; SRV only; SRV dominant; and SRX dominant. During the progress of SRX, the behavior of recrystallization is abruptly changed, confirming that two different mechanisms are controlling the kinetics of transformation.

Ab initio computations of the fourth-order charge density moments of 48 Ca and 208 Pb

Neutron skins of neutron-rich nuclei connect nuclei with the matter in neutron stars. High-precision measurements of nuclear charge densities to extract higher-order moments are proposed to be sensitive to neutron radii and skin thicknesses. We investigate the charge density of 48 Ca and 208 Pb, leading candidates for such studies, with ab initio nuclear structure calculations. We find strong correlations between the fourth-order charge density moment R$^{4}_{ch}$ and the charge and neutron radii, allowing us to predict R$^{4}_{ch}$ for 48 Ca and 208 Pb. We find a substantially weaker correlation between the fourth-order charge density moment and the neutron skin, limiting the ability of high-precision electron scattering to determine the neutron skin in a model-independent manner.

Crystal and Electronic Structures of A 2 NaIO 6 Periodate Double Perovskites (A = Sr, Ca, Ba): Candidate Wasteforms for I-129 Immobilization

The synthesis, structure, and thermal stability of the periodate double perovskites A 2 NaIO 6 (A= Ba, Sr, Ca) were investigated in the context of potential application for the immobilization of radioiodine. A combination of X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and DFT simulations were applied to determine accurate crystal structures of these compounds and understand their relative stability. The compounds were found to exhibit rock-salt ordering of Na and I on the perovskite B-site; Ba 2 NaIO 6 was found to adopt the Fm- 3 m aristotype structure, whereas Sr 2 NaIO 6 and Ca 2 NaIO 6 adopt the P 2 1 / n hettotype structure, characterized by cooperative octahedral tilting. DFT simulations determined the Fm- 3 m and P 2 1 / n structures of Ba 2 NaIO 6 to be energetically degenerate at room temperature, whereas diffraction and spectroscopy data evidence only the presence of the Fm- 3 m phase at room temperature, which may imply an incipient phase transition for this compound. The periodate double perovskites were found to exhibit remarkable thermal stability, with Ba 2 NaIO 6 only decomposing above 1050 °C in air, which is apparently the highest recorded decomposition temperature so far recorded for any iodine bearing compound. As such, these compounds offer some potential for application in the immobilization of iodine-129, from nuclear fuel reprocessing, with an iodine incorporation rate of 25–40 wt%. The synthesis of these compounds, elaborated here, is also compatible with both current conventional and future advanced processes for iodine recovery from the dissolver off-gas.

Butyltin Keggin Ion with a Rare Four-Coordinate Ca Center

Alkyltin clusters are exploited in nanolithography for the fabrication of microelectronics. The alkyltin Keggin family is unique among Keggin clusters across the periodic table; its members appear to favor the lower-symmetry β and γ isomers rather than the highly symmetrical α and ε isomers. Therefore, the alkyltin Keggin family may provide important fundamental information about the formation and isomerization of Keggin clusters. In this study, we have synthesized and structurally characterized a new butyltin Keggin cluster with a tetrahedral Ca 2+ center, fully formulated [(BuSn) 12 (CaO 4 )(OCH 3 ) 12 (O) 4 (OH) 8 ] 2+ (β-CaSn 12 ). The synthesis is a simple one-step process. Extensive solution characterization including electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, small-angle X-ray scattering, and multinuclear ( 1 H, 13 C, and 119 Sn) nuclear magnetic resonance shows β-CaSn 12 is essentially phase-pure and stable. This differs from the previously reported Na-centered analogues that always form a mixture of β and γ isomers, with facile interconversion. Therefore, this study has clarified prior confusion over complex spectroscopic and crystallographic characterization of the Na-centered analogues. Density functional theory calculations showed the following stability order: γ-CaSn 12 < γ-NaSn 12 < β-CaSn 12 < β-NaSn 12 . The β analogue is always more stable than the γ analogue, consistent with experiment. Notable outcomes of this study include a rare tetrahedral Ca coordination, a Na-free alkyltin cluster (important for microelectronics manufacturing), and a better understanding of Keggin families built of different metal cations.

Binding of Phosphate Species to Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ in Aqueous Solution

Phosphate derivatives and their interaction with metal cations are involved in many important biological phenomena, so an accurate characterization of the phosphate-metal interaction is necessary to properly understand the role of phosphate-metal contacts in mediating biological function. Herein, we improved the standard 12-6 Lennard-Jones (LJ) potential via the usage of the 12-6-4 LJ model, which incorporates ion-induced dipole interactions. Via parameter scanning, we fine-tuned the 12-6-4 LJ polarizability values to obtain accurate absolute binding free energies for the phosphate anions H 2 PO 4 – , HPO 4 2– , PO 4 3– coordinating with Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ . First, we modified the phosphate 12-6-4 LJ parameters to reproduce the solvation free energies of the series of phosphate anions using the thermodynamic integration (TI) method. Then, using the potential mean force (PMF) method, the polarizability of the metal-phosphate interaction was obtained. We show that the free energy profiles of phosphate ions coordinated to Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ generally show similar trends at longer metal–phosphate distances, while the absolute binding energy values increased with deprotonation. The resulting parameters demonstrate the flexibility of the 12-6-4 LJ-type nonbonded model and its usefulness in accurately describing cation–anion interactions.

Double-Bilayer polar nanoregions and Mn antisites in (Ca, Sr)3Mn2O7

Abstract The layered perovskite Ca 3 Mn 2 O 7 (CMO) is a hybrid improper ferroelectric candidate proposed for room temperature multiferroicity, which also displays negative thermal expansion behavior due to a competition between coexisting polar and nonpolar phases. However, little is known about the atomic-scale structure of the polar/nonpolar phase coexistence or the underlying physics of its formation and transition. In this work, we report the direct observation of double bilayer polar nanoregions (db-PNRs) in Ca 2.9 Sr 0.1 Mn 2 O 7 using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (S/TEM). In-situ TEM heating experiments show that the db-PNRs can exist up to 650 °C. Electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) studies coupled with first-principles calculations demonstrate that the stabilization mechanism of the db-PNRs is directly related to an Mn oxidation state change (from 4+ to 2+), which is linked to the presence of Mn antisite defects. These findings open the door to manipulating phase coexistence and achieving exotic properties in hybrid improper ferroelectric.

Multiple and nonlocal cation redox in Ca–Ce–Ti–Mn oxide perovskites for solar thermochemical applications

Modeling-driven design of redox-active off-stoichiometric oxides for solar thermochemical H 2 production (STCH) seldom has resulted in empirical demonstration of competitive materials. Here, we report the theoretical prediction and experimental evidence that the perovskite Ca 2/3 Ce 1/3 Ti 1/3 Mn 2/3 O 3 is synthesizable with high phase purity, stable, and has desirable redox thermodynamics for STCH, with a predicted average neutral oxygen vacancy (VO) formation energy, E v = 3.30 eV. Flow reactor experiments suggest potentially comparable or greater H 2 production capacity than recent promising Sr–La–Mn–Al and Ba–Ce–Mn metal oxide perovskites. Utilizing quantum-based modeling of a solid solution on both A and B sub-lattices, we predict the impact of nearest-neighbor composition on E v and determine that A-site Ce 4+ reduction dominates the redox-activity of Ca 2/3 Ce 1/3 Ti 1/3 Mn 2/3 O 3 . X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements provide evidence that supports these predictions and reversible Ce 4+ -to-Ce 3+ reduction. Our models predict that Ce 4+ reduces even when it is not nearest-neighbor to the V O , suggesting that refinement of Ce stoichiometry has the possibility of further enhancing performance.

Lattice distortions and the metal–insulator transition in pure and Ti-substituted Ca 3 Ru 2 O 7

Here, we report pair distribution function studies on the relationship between the metal–insulator transition (MIT) and lattice distortions in pure and Ti-substituted bilayer Ca 3 Ru 2 O 7 . Structural refinements performed as a function of temperature, magnetic field and length scale reveal the presence of lattice distortions not only within but also orthogonal to the bilayers. Because of the distortions, the local and average crystal structure differ across a broad temperature region extending from room temperature to temperatures below the MIT. The coexistence of distinct lattice distortions is likely to be behind the marked structural flexibility of Ca 3 Ru 2 O 7 under external stimuli. This observation highlights the ubiquity of lattice distortions in an archetypal Mott system and calls for similar studies on other families of strongly correlated materials.

Robust superconductivity and the suppression of charge-density wave in the quasi-skutterudites Ca 3 ( Ir 1 – x Rh x ) 4 Sn 13 single crystals at ambient pressure

Single crystals of the quasi-skutterudite compounds Ca 3 (Ir 1-x Rh x ) 4 Sn 13 (3–4–13) were synthesized by flux growth and characterized by x-ray diffraction, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, magnetization, resistivity, and radio frequency magnetic susceptibility techniques. The coexistence and competition between the charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity was studied by varying the Rh/Ir ratio. The superconducting transition temperature, T c , varies from 7 K in pure Ir (x = 0) to 8.3 K in pure Rh (x = 1). Temperature-dependent electrical resistivity reveals monotonic suppression of the CDW transition temperature, T CDW (x). The CDW starts in pure Ir, x = 0, at T CDW ≈ 40 K and extrapolates roughly linearly to zero at x c ≈ 0.53–0.58 under the superconducting dome. Magnetization and transport measurements show a significant influence of CDW on superconducting and normal states. Meissner expulsion is substantially reduced in the CDW region, indicating competition between the CDW and superconductivity. The low-temperature resistivity is higher in the CDW part of the phase diagram, consistent with the reduced density of states due to CDW gapping. Its temperature dependence just above T c shows signs of non-Fermi liquid behavior in a cone-like composition pattern. We conclude that the Ca 3 (Ir 1-x Rh x ) 4 Sn 13 alloy is a good candidate for a composition-driven quantum critical point at ambient pressure.

Enhancement of superconductivity at a quantum critical point in (Ca x Sr 1- x ) 3 Rh 4 Sn 13

We report microscopic studies by muon spin spectroscopy of the superconducting properties as a function of chemical and hydrostatic pressure in the cubic ternary intermetallic (Ca x Sr 1-x ) 3 Rh 4 Sn 13 compounds. We find evidence of a quantum critical point at a critical pressure pc in the superconducting phase, where the superfluid density increases by a factor of two and the superconducting pairing strength displays a pronounced maximum. The enhancement of superconductivity is related to the structural phase transition at p c , which is accompanied by profound changes of the Fermi surface associated to the suppression of a charge density wave (CDW). The quantum critical point separates a superconducting phase coexisting with CDW from a pure superconducting phase, while in both phases superconductivity has a strong-coupling phonon-mediated BCS-like s-wave character. Together with the related isoelectronic compound (Ca x Sr 1-x ) 3 Ir 4 Sn 13 , this system shows that conventional BCS superconductors in the presence of competing orders may display behaviour and characteristics of unconventional superconductors.

Parameterizations of electron scattering form factors for elastic scattering and electroexcitation of nuclear states in 27 Al and 40 Ca

Here, we report on empirical parameterizations of longitudinal ($\mathscr{R}$ L ) and transverse ($\mathscr{R}$ T ) nuclear elec- tromagnetic form factors for elastic scattering and the excitations of nuclear states in 27 Al and 40 Ca. The parameterizations are needed for the calculations of radiative corrections in measurements of electron scattering cross sections on 27 Al and 40 Ca in the quasi-elastic, resonance and inelastic con- tinuum regions, provide the contribution of nuclear excitations in investigations of the Coulomb Sum Rule, and test theoretical model predictions for excitation of nuclear states in electron and neutrino interactions on nuclear targets at low energies.
