Resonant Chiral Effects in Nonlinear Dielectric Metasurfaces

We study the resonant enhancement of linear and nonlinear chiroptical effects in planar silicon metasurfaces with an in-plane asymmetry supporting multipolar Mie resonances and quasi-bound states in the continuum (quasi-BICs). We demonstrate theoretically and observe in experiment the pronounced linear circular dichroism at the quasi-BIC resonances originating from the interaction of modes with the substrate. We further find that both local field enhancement and third-harmonic signal are large for Mie resonances and some quasi-BIC modes due to the critical coupling. We demonstrate experimentally a strong nonlinear chiroptical response associated with high efficiency of the third-harmonic generation and large nonlinear circular dichroism varying from +0.918 ± 0.049 to –0.771 ± 0.004 for the samples with different asymmetries. We reveal the nonreciprocal nature of nonlinear chirality governed by the microscopic symmetry of nonlinearities and macroscopic symmetries of the meta-atom and metasurface lattice. Here, we believe our results suggest a general strategy for engineering nonlinear chiroptical response in dielectric resonant metasurfaces.

Leveraging chiral induced spin selectivity to improve the efficiency and selectivity of electrocatalytic reduction

Energy production is a fundamental pillar of modern society, but it remains heavily reliant on fossil fuel combustion, which leads to environmental degradation and resource depletion. Electrocatalytic reduction reactions (ERRs) offer a cleaner alternative by functioning under mild conditions, eliminating the need for high temperatures or pressures. However, their widespread adoption is hindered by challenges such as low efficiency, inadequate selectivity, and sluggish kinetics. Here, the introduction of chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) offers a promising strategy to address these limitations by reducing energy barriers in reactions involving spin-sensitive intermediates or transition states. By leveraging CISS, ERR pathways can be manipulated to favor desired reactions, enhance product yield, and suppress unwanted byproducts, improving selectivity. Beyond reducing the impact of competing side reactions, CISS also enhances the kinetics of ERRs by accelerating reaction rates and lowering the energy barriers associated with multi-electron transfer steps. Thanks to its straightforward and versatile application, CISS shows significant potential in optimizing well-studied ERRs, such as the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR), facilitating the future transition of these technologies from research laboratories to commercial energy plants worldwide.

Chiral photocurrent in a Quasi-1D TiS 3 (001) phototransistor

The presence of in-plane chiral effects, hence spin–orbit coupling, is evident in the changes in the photocurrent produced in a TiS 3 (001) field-effect phototransistor with left versus right circularly polarized light. The direction of the photocurrent is protected by the presence of strong spin–orbit coupling and the anisotropy of the band structure as indicated in NanoARPES measurements. As hsown here, dark electronic transport measurements indicate that TiS 3 is n-type and has an electron mobility in the range of 1–6 cm 2 V –1 s –1 . I–V measurements under laser illumination indicate the photocurrent exhibits a bias directionality dependence, reminiscent of bipolar spin diode behavior. Because the TiS 3 contains no heavy elements, the presence of spin–orbit coupling must be attributed to the observed loss of inversion symmetry at the TiS 3 (001) surface.

Tabulated equations of state from models informed by chiral effective field theory

Abstract We construct four equation of state (EoS) tables, tabulated over a range of temperatures, densities, and charge fractions, relevant for neutron star applications such as simulations of neutron star mergers. The EoS are computed from a relativistic mean-field theory constrained by the pure neutron matter EoS from chiral effective field theory, inferred properties of isospin-symmetric nuclear matter, and astrophysical observations of neutron star structure. To model nuclear matter at low densities, we attach an EoS that models inhomogeneous nuclear matter at arbitrary temperatures and charge fractions. The four EoS tables we develop are available from the CompOSE EoS repository https://compose.obspm.fr/eos/297 and gitlab.com/ahaber/qmc-rmf-tables .

Probe Chiral Magnetic Effect with Signed Balance Function

In this paper a pair of observables are proposed as alternative ways, by examining the fluctuation of net momentum-ordering of charged pairs, to study the charge separation induced by the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) in relativistic heavy ion collisions. They are, the out-of-plane to in-plane ratio of fluctuation of the difference between signed balance functions measured in pair’s rest frame, and the ratio of it to similar measurement made in the laboratory frame. In this work, both observables have been studied with simulations including flow-related backgrounds, and for the first time, backgrounds that are related to resonance's global spin alignment. The two observables have similar positive responses to signal, and opposite, limited responses to identifiable backgrounds arising from resonance flow and spin alignment. Both observables have also been tested with two realistic models, namely, a multi-phase transport (AMPT) model and the anomalous-viscous fluid dynamics (AVFD) model. These two observables, when cross examined, will provide useful insights in the study of CME-induced charge separation.

Order-by-order uncertainties of nucleon-nucleon Wolfenstein amplitudes in chiral effective field theory

Quantum mechanical invariance principles dictate the most general operator structure that can be present in the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction. Five independent operators appear in the on-shell NN amplitude together with five corresponding coefficient functions. The usual choice for these coefficient functions is known as the NN Wolfenstein amplitudes. We analyze the order-by-order convergence of each of the five NN Wolfenstein amplitudes predicted by a semilocal coordinate space potential implementation of chiral effective field theory (𝜒⁢EFT). We do this at laboratory kinetic energies between 25 and 200 MeV for both neutron-proton and proton-proton scattering. Our analysis uses the Gaussian-process methods developed by the BUQEYE Collaboration to describe the contributions of each 𝜒⁢EFT order, and so yields truncation uncertainties for each Wolfenstein amplitude that are correlated across scattering angles. We combine information on the size of different orders in the EFT to infer the 𝜒⁢EFT breakdown scale for each amplitude, finding, on average, Λ 𝑏 between 750 and 800 MeV. Furthermore, with this choice of Λ 𝑏 , the EFT truncation uncertainties cover both higher-order results and empirical Wolfenstein amplitudes well for all orders other than the leading order.

Chiral electronic excitations in the quasi-two-dimensional Rashba system BiTeI

The optical transitions between spin-polarized bands of the quasi-two-dimensional Rashba system BiTeI are investigated using polarization-resolved resonant Raman spectroscopy. We detect chiral excitations between states with opposite helicity and compare spectra to calculations within a three-band model. Using the resonant Raman excitation profile, we deduce the Rashba parameters and band gaps of the higher conduction bands near the Fermi level, and compare the parameters to values obtained by ab initio density functional theory.

Transferring orbital angular momentum to an electron beam reveals toroidal and chiral order

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) and torque transfer play central roles in a wide range of magnetic textures and devices including skyrmions and spin-torque electronics. Analogous topological structures are now also being explored in ferroelectrics, including polarization vortex arrays in ferroelectric/dielectric superlattices. Unlike magnetic toroidal order, electric toroidal order does not couple directly to linear external fields. Instead, we find that the presence of an electric toroidal moment in a ferrorotational phase transfers measurable torque and OAM to a localized electron beam in the ballistic limit. We record these torque transfers from a high-energy electron beam using a momentum-resolved detector. This approach provides a high-sensitivity method to detect polarization fields and their more complex order parameters and topologies. In addition to toroidal order, we also demonstrate high-precision measurements of vorticity and chirality for polar vortexlike phases.

Magnetic field induced partially polarized chiral spin liquid in a transition metal dichalcogenide moiré system

As one of the most intriguing states of matter, the chiral spin liquid (CSL) has attracted much scientific interest while its existence and mechanism in crystalline strongly correlated systems remain hotly debated. On the other hand, strong correlation driven emergent phenomena can be realized in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers with a tremendously tunable large length scale providing a new platform for the emergence of CSLs. Here, we focus on a strongly correlated model relevant to heterobilayer WSe 2 /MoSe 2 and investigate the Mott insulating phase at half filling under an out-of-plane magnetic field. Considering both its orbital and spin Zeeman effects we identify three conventionally ordered phases including a 120° Néel phase, a stripe phase, and an up-up-down phase. For intermediate fields an emergent quantum spin liquid phase is identified with partial spin polarization. We further characterize its topological nature as the v = 1/2 Laughlin CSL through the topological entanglement spectrum and quantized spin pumping under spin flux insertion. In addition, we map out the quantum phase diagram for different twisted angles in an experimentally accessible parameter regime.

Complex orders and chirality in the classical Kitaev-Γ model

It is well recognized that the low-energy physics of many Kitaev materials is governed by two dominant energy scales, the Ising-type Kitaev coupling 𝐾 and the symmetric off-diagonal Γ coupling. An understanding of the interplay between these two scales is therefore the natural starting point toward a quantitative description that includes subdominant perturbations that are inevitably present in real materials. This study focuses on the classical 𝐾−Γ model on the honeycomb lattice, with a specific emphasis on the region 𝐾< 0 and Γ > 0 , which is the most relevant for the available materials and which remains enigmatic in both quantum and classical limits, despite much effort. We employ large-scale Monte Carlo simulations on specially designed finite-size clusters and unravel the presence of a complex multisublattice magnetic order in a wide region of the phase diagram, whose structure is characterized in detail. We show that this order can be quantified in terms of a coarse-grained scalar-chirality order, featuring a counterrotating modulation on the two spin sublattices. Here, we also provide a comparison to previous studies and discuss the impact of quantum fluctuations on the phase diagram.

Impact of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and dynamical diquark correlations on proton generalized parton distributions

We calculate the leading-twist, helicity-independent generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of the proton, at finite skewness, in the Nambu–Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model of quantum chomodynamics (QCD). The NJL model reproduces low-energy characteristics of QCD, including dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (DCSB). The proton bound-state amplitude is solved for using the Faddeev equation in a quark-diquark approximation, including both dynamical scalar and axial vector diquarks. GPDs are calculated using a dressed non-local correlator, consistent with DCSB, which is obtained by solving a Bethe-Salpeter equation. The model and approximations used observe Lorentz covariance, and as a consequence the GPDs obey polynomiality sum rules. Extractions of electromagnetic and gravitational form factors are performed. We find a D-term of -1.08 when the non-local correlator is properly dressed, and 0.85 when the bare correlator is used instead, suggesting that within this framework proton stability requires the constituent quarks to be dressed consistently with DCSB. In conclusion, we also find that the anomalous gravitomagnetic moment vanishes, as required by Poincare symmetry.

Chiral effective field theory calculations of weak transitions in light nuclei

In this work, we report quantum Monte Carlo calculations of weak transitions in A≤10 nuclei, based on the Norfolk two- and three-nucleon chiral interactions, and associated one- and two-body axial currents. Furthermore, we find that the contribution from two-body currents is at the 2–3% level, with the exception of matrix elements entering the rates of 8Li, 8B, and 8He β decay. These matrix elements are suppressed in impulse approximation based on the (leading order) Gamow Teller transition operator alone; two-body currents provide a 20–30% correction, which is, however, insufficient to bring theory in agreement with experimental data. For the other transitions, the agreement with the data is satisfactory, and the results exhibit a negligible to mild model dependence when different combinations of Norfolk interactions are utilized to construct the nuclear wave functions. We report a complete study of two-body weak transition densities which reveals the expected universal behavior of two-body currents at short distances throughout the range of A=3 to A=10 systems considered here.

Nuclear properties with semilocal momentum-space regularized chiral interactions beyond N 2 LO

We present a comprehensive investigation of few-nucleon systems as well as light and medium-mass nuclei up to A = 48 using the current Low Energy Nuclear Physics International Collaboration two-nucleon interactions in combination with the third-order (N 2 LO) three-nucleon forces. To address the systematic overbinding of nuclei starting from A ≈ 10 found in our earlier study utilizing the N 2 LO two- and three-nucleon forces, we take into account higher-order corrections to the two-nucleon potentials up through fifth order in chiral effective field theory. Here, the resulting Hamiltonian can be completely determined using the A = 3 binding energies and selected nucleon-deuteron cross sections as input. It is then shown to predict other nucleon-deuteron scattering observables and spectra of light p-shell nuclei, for which a detailed correlated truncation error analysis is performed, in agreement with experimental data. Moreover, the predicted ground state energies of nuclei in the oxygen isotopic chain from 14 O to 26 O as well as 40 Ca and 48 Ca show a remarkably good agreement with experimental values, given that the Hamiltonian is fixed completely from the A ≤ 3 data, once the fourth-order (N 3 LO) corrections to the two-nucleon interactions are taken into account. On the other hand, the charge radii are found to be underpredicted by ≈10% for the oxygen isotopes and by almost 20% for 40 Ca and 48 Ca.

Magnetic moments of A = 3 nuclei obtained from chiral effective field theory operators

Chiral effective field theory (χEFT) provides a framework for obtaining internucleon interactions in a systematically improvable fashion from first principles, while also providing for the derivation of consistent electroweak current operators. In this study, we apply consistently derived interactions and currents towards calculating the magnetic dipole moments of the A = 3 systems 3 H and 3 He. We focus here on LENPIC interactions obtained using semilocal coordinate-space (SCS) regularization. Starting from the momentum-space representation of the LENPIC χEFT vector current, we derive the SCS-regularized magnetic dipole operator up through next-to-next-to-leading order (N 2 LO). We then carry out no-core shell-model calculations for 3 H and 3 He systems using the SCS LENPIC interaction at N 2 LO in χEFT and evaluate the magnetic dipole moments obtained using the consistently derived one-nucleon and two-nucleon electromagnetic currents. As anticipated by prior results with χEFT currents, the current corrections through N 2 LO provide improved, but not yet complete, agreement with experiment for the 3 H and 3 He magnetic dipole moments.

Application of dilaton chiral perturbation theory to N f = 8 , SU(3) spectral data

We extend dilaton chiral perturbation theory (dChPT) to include the taste splittings in the Nambu-Goldstone sector observed in lattice simulations of near-conformal theories with staggered fermions. We then apply dChPT to a recent simulation by the LSD collaboration of the SU(3) gauge theory with 8 fermions in the fundamental representation, which is believed to exhibit near-conformal behavior in the infrared, and in which a light singlet scalar state, nearly degenerate with the pions, has been found. We find that the mesonic sector of this theory can be successfully described by dChPT, including, in particular, the mesonic taste splittings found in the simulation. We confirm that current simulations of this theory are in the "large-mass" regime.

Chiral edge states on spheres for lattice domain wall fermions

Recently Weyl edge states on manifolds in dimension 𝑑 +1 with a connected 𝑑-dimensional boundary were proposed as candidates for lattice regularization of chiral gauge theories, for even 𝑑. The examples considered to date include solid cylinders in any odd dimension, and the 3 ball with boundary 𝑆 2 . Here we consider the general case of a (𝑑+1)-dimensional ball for any even 𝑑 and show that the theory for the edge states on 𝑆 𝑑 describe a conventional Weyl fermion on a sphere with half-integer momenta. A possible advantage of such theories is that they can be discretized by a square lattice without breaking the underlying discrete hypercubic symmetry.

Dynamics of the simplest chiral gauge theories

Arguably, the simplest chiral gauge theories are SO(10) with 𝑁 𝑓 fermion fields in the spinor representation 𝟏𝟔. We study their dynamics using their supersymmetric limits perturbed by an infinitesimal anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking as a guide. We predict the theory is gapped for 𝑁 𝑓 = 1, 2, while the SU⁡(𝑁 𝑓 ) global symmetry is broken to SO⁡(N 𝑓 ) for moderately large 𝑁 𝑓 ≥ 3.
