Aurorasaurus Database of Real-Time, Crowd-Sourced Aurora Data for Space Weather Research

This technical report documents the details of Aurorasaurus citizen science data for the period spanning 2015 and 2016 as well as its routine data filtering protocols. Aurorasaurus citizen science data is a collection of auroral sightings submitted to the project via its website or apps and mined from social media. It is a robust data set and particularly abundant during strong geomagnetic storms when auroral precipitation models have the highest uncertainty. These data are offered to the scientific community for use through an openaccess database in its raw and scientific formats, each of which is described in detail in this technical report. Furthermore, by demonstrating its scientific utility, we aim to encourage its integration into auroral research.

Low Energy Precipitating Electrons in the Diffuse Aurorae

Auroral electron precipitation is often classified into three categories: diffuse, monoenergetic, and broadband. However, some precipitating electrons do not fit any of the three categories, which areassumed to be "diffuse" electrons for convenience. Many of these nonconforming electrons exhibit highfluxes at low energies. Most studies assume that the precipitating electrons originate from themagnetosphere. However, this primary precipitation is only the first step in the formation of the electronprecipitation. The primary precipitation creates secondary electrons and both electron populations bouncemany times between the conjugate points. Thus, the full electron precipitation consists of not only theprimary but the Multiply Reflected Primary and Secondary (MRPS) electrons. The MRPS electrons aremodeled with Superthermal Electron Transport model. The modeldata comparisons suggest that the lowenergy electrons in the nonconforming precipitating electrons can be attributed to MRPS electrons.

Hierarchical Multiscale Process Modeling of A Textile Composite Y-Joint for the Aurora D8 Aircraft

Woven polymer matrix composites (PMCs) are widely used in aerospace applications for their favorable specific properties. However, the behavior of the inter- and intra-tow matrix during manufacturing of woven PMCs is difficult to isolate experimentally due to geometric and processing complexities. Classical closed-form homogenization approaches allow for composite thermos-chemo-mechanical properties to be characterized at any fiber volume fraction. In this work, virtual curing is applied to the inter- and intra-tow matrix materials of a plain weave repeating unit cell (RUC). Thermo-chemo-mechanical property evolution within the tows is calculated using the Concentric Cylinder Model (CCM) and the Rule of Mixtures (ROM). Curing is implemented through user-written subroutines within the commercial finite element method software Abaqus. Virtual curing results are compared with those from a linear-elastic thermal cool down simulation in Abaqus. Results indicate that tow property evolution during curing has a non-negligible effect on the final stress state.
