Operationalizing “Wickedness” as Analytical and Creative Tools to Transform Aviation

As the world grows increasingly networked and complex, so do challenges faced by aviation and technology professionals (e.g., fighting wildfires and increasing access to healthcare). There is a need to develop new methods to tackle complex socio-technical problems relevant to aviation. The concept of “wicked” problems offers new methods and perspectives for framing complex challenges. In this paper, we present two modes of operationalizing “wickedness” used by NASA’s Convergent Aeronautics Solutions (CAS) Project to develop transformative innovations in aviation: as an analytical, evaluative tool and a creative, generative tool. Through project examples, we demonstrate that using wickedness as a creative tool during the design process enables rich problem exploration with diverse stakeholders and reflection on how a problem is formulated, while usage as an analytical tool can provide criteria for project selection if internal agreement on the definitions of such criteria is established. Operationalizing wickedness as a creative tool may also enable organizational development of a generative mindset to better adapt to our rapidly changing future.

Multidisciplinary Analytics, Visualization, and Reporting Interface for Integrated Countermeasures

Exploration class missions will have communication latency requiring crew members to make decisions more autonomously, with less support from ground personnel. Therefore, new software is needed to provide crew the ability to not only visualize their countermeasures data, but to also derive comprehensive, nuanced, and multidisciplinary insights regarding the health and performance informatics throughout a mission. The Multidisciplinary Analytics, Visualization, and Reporting Interface for Integrated Countermeasures (MAVRIIC) software seeks to establish a centralized approach to countermeasure data visualization that will facilitate a more holistic understanding of crew members' well-being and performance and enable the development of informed and autonomous decision-making support systems aligned with the evolving requirements of Exploration missions. The culmination of MAVRIIC phase 1 (end of FY23) marked the release of a full-stack, cloud-based ground tool displaying visualizations of in-flight exercise data, exercise ground testing, and exercise MEDB reports. Phase 2 of MAVRIIC (FY24) focuses on beginning the expansion of data contents to domains outside of exercise, including functional fitness, sensorimotor, food/nutrition, radiation, bone, and cardio/vision. Phase 3 and phase 4 will comprise enhanced analytics integration and initiation of flight tool development for infusion into the Artemis Program and eventually the Mars Transit Habitat.

Analytical Calculation of the Energy Deposition Spectrum and Average Dose to A Spherical Target By Ion Tracks at All Impact Parameters

Microdosimetry is used to estimate quality factors for risk assessment in radiation protection [1] and to quantify relative biological effectiveness (RBE) for treatment planning of hadron radiation therapy [2]. Radiation physics has shown that energetic ions deposit energy in a complex manner: the track structure. The Local Effect Model (LEM) [3] is often used as an approximation to describe this complex track structure. We have previously calculated an analytical expression for the dose to a spherical target fully located in the penumbra of an ion track using the LEM [4]. In this work, the calculation has been extended to all impact parameters. Furthermore, using these analytical expressions, it was possible to obtain the theoretical energy deposition spectra to a sphere irradiated uniformly.

Analytical Flight Dynamic Model Development for eVTOL Aircraft

This paper presents an analytical flight dynamic model development method for a multi- rotor eVTOL aircraft in hover and transition flight. The method captures the analytical stability and control sensitivities of rotor unsteady aerodynamic loads about a trim solution generated by a rotorcraft aeromechanics comprehensive analysis tool. The rotor aerody- namic forces include circulatory and non-circulatory components to account for unsteady aerodynamics. The circulatory forces are corrected for unsteady aerodynamics using the time-domain approximation of Theodorsen’s function. The integrated flight dynamic model includes the rigid-body aircraft flight dynamics, inflow dynamics, unsteady aerodynamics, and blade pitch and rotor actuator dynamics. Stability analyses shows that the Lift+Cruise aircraft is statically unstable in roll and yaw axes and also dynamically unstable in hover. Closed-loop feedback control is necessary for stable hover flight.

Optimization of Turbine Engine Cycle Analysis with Analytic Derivatives

A new engine cycle analysis tool, called Pycycle, was built using the OpenMDAO framework. Pycycle provides analytic derivatives allowing for an efficient use of gradient-based optimization methods on engine cycle models, without requiring the use of finite difference derivative approximation methods. To demonstrate this, a gradient-based design optimization was performed on a turbofan engine model. Results demonstrate very favorable performance compared to an optimization of an identical model using finite-difference approximated derivatives.

Optimization of Turbine Engine Cycle Analysis with Analytic Derivatives

A new engine cycle analysis tool, called Pycycle, was recently built using the OpenMDAO framework. This tool uses equilibrium chemistry based thermodynamics, and provides analytic derivatives. This allows for stable and efficient use of gradient-based optimization and sensitivity analysis methods on engine cycle models, without requiring the use of finite difference derivative approximation methods. To demonstrate this, a gradient-based design optimization was performed on a multi-point turbofan engine model. Results demonstrate very favorable performance compared to an optimization of an identical model using finite-difference approximated derivatives.

Advanced Analytics and Big Earth Data

NASA's Earth Science Data Systems process, archive and distribute petabytes of Earth Observation data to a variety of end users. These end users will face dramatically increased data size in the near future, bringing about new challenges and opportunities in analyzing those data. One area of particular ferment currently is Machine Learning. Many Machine Learning methods are black boxes, limiting direct insight into the data's properties. However, they can be used for a variety of data enhancement purposes, such as parameter retrieval, data fusion and image classification and segmentation. The Earth Observing System Data and Information System is also evolving to host large data volumes in the cloud, enabling data proximal analysis. As part of this effort, an Analytics framework is being developed to support and enhance user analysis of the data. By using standards based services in the framework, diverse user communities can be served, while also allowing inter-system collaboration in the analysis process.

Analytical and Numerical Modeling of Sensor Port Acoustics

The purpose of this Technical Publication (TP) is to provide background, relevant theory, and examples for acoustic response analysis of a sensor port. A new approach is devised theoretically and computationally that captures the true acoustic response of a sensor port. This TP summarizes the acoustics back-ground, the port response theoretical development, and provides comparisons of a port acoustic response using an analytical model and computational acoustics. The effects of nonlinear acoustics and acoustic propagation in liquids is also examined. Additionally, this TP describes the design of a specialized filter using the predicted sensor port response that can be applied to data for correction.
