Solid-state laminate electrode assemblies and methods of making

Solid-state laminate electrode assemblies and various methods for making the solid-state laminate electrode assemblies involve a lithium metal layer reactively bonded to a lithium ion conducting sulfide glass layer. During manufacture, highly reactive surfaces of the lithium metal layer and the lithium ion conducting sulfide glass layer are maintained in its substantially unpassivated state until they have been reactively bonded.

Sulfite Is Not Required for N 2 Reduction Catalyzed by Mo-Nitrogenase

Mo-nitrogenase catalyzes the reduction of dinitrogen (N 2 ) to two ammonia (NH 3 ) at the active-site FeMo-cofactor. Substrate activation requires the accumulation of three or four electrons and protons as two Fe-bound hydrides and is coupled to obligatory H 2 release through reductive hydride elimination. Subsequent delivery of four or five additional electrons and protons to the bound N 2 yields two NH 3 molecules. Increasing evidence suggests that at least one belt sulfide within FeMo-cofactor is dynamically involved in the catalytic cycle. A recent report further proposed that sulfite (SO 3 2− ) is required for N 2 reduction, with sulfite binding required for NH 3 release and a subsequent six-electron reduction of the bound sulfite to regenerate the resting cofactor. To test this proposal, we conducted turnover studies of Mo-nitrogenase under sulfite-free conditions using a reduced viologen as reductant and protein preparations devoid of dithionite or sulfite. Under these conditions, nitrogenase effectively catalyzed both N 2 reduction and proton reduction, exhibiting steady-state turnover under N 2 for 6 min, with a turnover number exceeding 150, approaching that observed with dithionite as reductant. The same H 2 -formed/N 2 -reduced ratio was observed whether dithionite or the viologen species was used as reductant. Further, EPR spectroscopic analyses showed that the FeMo-cofactor returned to its resting state after multiple catalytic cycles in the absence of sulfite. Finally, physiological bypass of sulfite formation does not affect the capacity for diazotrophic growth of the model nitrogen-fixing organism Azotobacter vinelandii . Finally, these results demonstrate that sulfite is not required for Mo-nitrogenase-catalyzed N 2 reduction either in vitro or in vivo .

Coupling of Infrared Active Colloidal Quantum Dots and Amorphous Selenium for Fast and Sensitive Photodetection

Colloidal quantum dot (CQD) based infrared (IR) photodetectors offer facile wavelength tunability in the IR and low-cost fabrication. However, owing to their large surface areas, CQDs intrinsically have significant surface traps critically affecting the speed of CQD photodetectors, typically mediated through tedious surface passivation efforts. In this report, an alternative strategy involving coupling of near-IR photoactive lead sulfide CQDs with a thermally evaporated amorphous selenium (a-Se) hole transport layer is proposed. By separating the detector into a photon absorbing CQD region and a charge transport a-Se region, the study takes advantage of the extremely low noise, predominantly hole-only transport process in a-Se. Here, a high 3 dB bandwidth of 2.5 MHz and a competitive specific detectivity of 2.5 × 10 11 Jones at room temperature are demonstrated at 980 nm. This report serves as a first demonstration of strong coupling between an IR active CQD absorber and a-Se, which paves the path to obtain fast and highly photoresponsive IR photodetection in the future.

NaGaS 2 - an Elusive Layered Compound with Dynamic Water Absorption and Wide-Ranging Ion Exchange Properties

Most ternary sulfides belonging to the MGaS 2 structure-type have been known for many years and are well-characterized. Surprisingly, there have been no reports of the NaGaS 2 composition, which contains Na, a monovalent cation slightly larger in size than Li, found in LiGaS 2 , a compound known for its non-linear optical properties. Herein we demonstrate for the first time that the unique reversible water absorption in NaGaS 2 has resulted in its absence from the literature due to the difficulties that one encounters when characterizing this compound by SC XRD. The layered structure of this compound coupled with uniquely easy migration of water molecules between the layers allows for ion exchange with 3d and 5f metal cations. We established that some cations, e.g. Ni 2+ , facilitate exfoliation of the layers, providing a facile synthetic route to a new class of 2D chalcogenide materials and, in addition, demonstrating that NaGaS 2 can readily uptake uranyl species from aqueous solutions.

Discovery of a Ferromagnetic Nickel Chalcogenide Nanocluster Ni 3 S 3 H(PEt 3 ) 5

Atomically precise ligated nanoclusters (NC) are promising cluster-based materials with novel molecular architectures and tunable magnetic properties. Herein, the synthesis and characterization of a nickel sulfide NC Ni 3 S 3 H(PEt 3 ) 5 (PEt 3 = triethylphosphine) with distinct magnetic properties are reported. Magnetization measurements reveal its magnetic moment of 1.5 µ B in the solid phase, consistent with the existence of one unpaired electron predicted by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Additionally, experimental measurements indicate the presence of ferromagnetic ordering within each Ni 3 S 3 H(PEt 3 ) 5 NC and strong coercivity at temperatures below 20 K. Ion mobility-mass spectrometry is employed in conjunction with DFT calculations and collision cross-section simulations to investigate the structure of the isolated Ni 3 S 3 H(PEt 3 ) 5 . Theoretical studies show that [Ni 3 S 3 H(PEt 3 ) 5 ] + has a planar Ni 3 S 3 core where three Ni atoms are arranged in a triangle with three bridging S atoms residing in the same plane. This structure is preserved in both solution and solid phases, which is confirmed by spectroscopic studies of Ni 3 S 3 H(PEt 3 ) 5 . Additionally, DFT calculations indicate that all spins at the Ni sites are aligned parallel, confirming the presence of ferromagnetic coupling. Overall, this study provides key insights into the structure and magnetic properties of Ni 3 S 3 H(PEt 3 ) 5 , which will facilitate the design of new NC-based magnetic materials.

High-Temperature Corrosion of Chromia-Forming Ni-Based Alloys in CO 2 Containing Impurities

Future technologies require structural materials resistant to environmental degradation in high-temperature CO 2 -rich environments. In this work, we exposed several commercially available Ni-based alloys (230, 263, 282, 617, 625, and 740H) to atmospheric pressure gases intended to simulate the compositions expected in future direct-fired supercritical CO 2 power cycles. The alloys were exposed to 95% CO 2 + 4% H 2 O + 1% O 2 and the same gas containing 0.1% SO 2 at temperatures of 600, 650, 700, 750, and 800 °C for 2500 h. With minor exceptions, chromia scales formed on all alloys at all temperatures in the SO 2 -free gas, yielding parabolic growth rates that followed an Arrhenius temperature dependence. Behavior in the SO 2 -containing gas was more complex. Generally, the alloys performed well at temperatures of 650, 750, and 800 °C. While some alloys further performed relatively well across the whole temperature range, several of the alloys experienced chromia failure resulting in non-protective duplex oxide scales and high oxidation rates, at temperatures of 600 and 700 °C. Deviation from protective behavior was associated with internal sulfide formation and, additionally for the case of 600 °C, external sulfate formation. Extensive carburization accompanied growth of the non-protective duplex oxide scales, which made it more difficult for the alloy to recover after initiation of the sulfur-induced accelerated corrosion process. The thermodynamic and kinetic factors influencing the accelerated corrosion in the presence of sulfur are discussed. The results suggest that caution is required when assessing compatibility of Ni-based alloys for CO 2 -based systems when sulfur-based impurities are expected.

Highly efficient, rapid, and concurrent removal of toxic heavy metals by the novel 2D hybrid LDH–[Sn 2 S 6 ]

According to a United Nations report, by 2050 nearly six billion people worldwide will suffer from clean water scarcity. This is mostly because of the exponential proliferation of world population, urbanization, industrialization, and water pollution. Heavy metals are common water pollutants that can pose grave public health consequences. Existing water purification systems are lack of materials that have the potential for quick, simultaneous, efficient, and cost-efficient removal of numerous toxic metals from wastewater. Here, in this work, we report the design and synthesis of an economically viable Layered Double Hydroxides - Stannic Sulfide, LDH–[Sn 2 S 6 ] that exhibits a rapid, efficient, selective, and concurrent removal of Cu 2+ , Ag + , Cd 2+ , Pb 2+ , and Hg 2+ from parts per million (ppm) level to below 5 parts per billion (ppb) satisfying World Health Organization’s (WHO) safe drinking water limit. Moreover, LDH–[Sn 2 S 6 ] shows exceptionally high removal efficiencies of the above metals in acidic, neutral, and basic conditions. LDH–[Sn 2 S 6 ] also demonstrates enormous sorption capacities of 378, 978, 332, 579, and 666 mg/g for Cu 2+ , Ag + , Cd 2+ , Pb 2+ , and Hg 2+ , respectively. Remarkably, LDH–[Sn 2 S 6 ] displays extraordinary tolerance to the concentrations of Na + , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Cl - , CO 3 2– , NO 3 – ,and SO 4 2- , and other constituents in tap and river water, it efficiently sequestrates Cu 2+ , Ag + , Cd 2+ , Pb 2+ , and Hg 2+ from ppm to safe drinking water levels in minutes. LDH–[Sn 2 S 6 ] shows pseudo-second-order sorption kinetics suggesting chemisorption adsorption mechanism involving M–S bonding. Altogether, the regeneratable LDH–[Sn 2 S 6 ] becomes an exceptional material that shows ultrahigh removal, unprecedented selectivity, rapid adsorption kinetics, wide pH stability, and a massive adsorption capacity. The integration of these features places LDH–[Sn 2 S 6 ] at the top of all adsorbents known to date and thus could be used for wastewater purifications.

Hole-scavenging in photo-driven N 2 reduction catalyzed by a CdS-nitrogenase MoFe protein biohybrid system

The light-driven reduction of dinitrogen (N 2 ) to ammonia (NH 3 ) catalyzed by a cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanocrystal-nitrogenase MoFe protein biohybrid is dependent on a range of different factors, including an appropriate hole-scavenging sacrificial electron donor (SED). Here, the impact of different SEDs on the overall rate of N 2 reduction catalyzed by a CdS quantum dot (QD)-MoFe protein system was determined. The selection of SED was guided by several goals: (i) molecules with standard reduction potentials sufficient to reduce the oxidized CdS QD, (ii) molecules that do not absorb the excitation wavelength of the CdS QD, and (iii) molecules that could be readily reduced by sustainable processes. Earlier studies utilized buffer molecules or ascorbic acid as the SED. The effectiveness of ascorbic acid as SED was compared to dithionite (DT), triethanolamine (TEOA), and hydroquinone (HQ) across a range of concentrations in supporting N 2 reduction to NH 3 in a CdS QD-MoFe protein photocatalytic system. It was found that TEOA supported N 2 reduction rates comparable to those observed for dithionite and ascorbic acid. HQ was found to support significantly higher rates of N 2 reduction compared to the other SEDs at a concentration of 50 mM. A comparison of the rates of N 2 reduction by the biohybrid complex to the standard reduction potential (E o ) of the SEDs reveals that E o is not the only factor impacting the efficiency of hole-scavenging. These findings reveal the importance of the SED properties for improving the efficiency of hole-scavenging in the light-driven N 2 reduction reaction catalyzed by a CdS QD–MoFe protein hybrid.

Enhanced performance of Bi 2 S 3 /TiO 2 heterostructure composite films for solar cell applications

Day to day energy production is shifting towards renewable energy sources as these sources become more economically viable while being less polluting to operate; solar energy has become one of the major sources of renewable energy. However, it currently relies on ultra-pure silicon ingots to produce commercial silicon photovoltaics, which prevents the cost of electricity being produced to compete with non-renewable energy production. A viable low-cost alternative for silicon based cells would be dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), which are easier and cheaper to manufacture as they do not require expensive and delicate raw materials to make. Moreover, they could be made semi-flexible which allows for a greater variety of applications. A DSSC consists of three components, a photo-electrode, an electrolyte and a counter-electrode. When exposed to incident light, the complex photosensitizers in the photoelectrode release electrons which are transported to the external load, leaving the photoelectrode in an oxidized state. The electrons are collected by the counter electrode and used to reduce the electrolyte. This charged electrolyte then reduces the positively charged photoelectrode, allowing the process to begin again. To improve the efficiency of this process, we explore the use of bismuth sulfide (Bi 2 S 3 ) and titanium oxide (TiO 2 ) composite as photoelectrode material and investigate their impact on the efficiency of DSSC.

Biological conversion of methane to methanol at high H 2 S concentrations with an H 2 S-tolerant methanotrophic consortium

To develop biological biogas to methanol conversion technology without costly hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) removal, a high H 2 S tolerant methanotrophic consortium (HTMC), was enriched from an anaerobic digester effluent in presence of 5.64 g/m 3 H 2 S in the gas phase. The HTMC can grow stably and produce methanol under conditions with CH 4 /air mixtures containing 5.64 g/m 3 of H 2 S. There is no significant (p>0.05) difference in cell yield or CH 4 to methanol conversion efficiency between trials with different H 2 S concentrations from 0 g/m 3 to 5.64 g/m 3 . Further, under optimal conditions, a cell yield of 0.333 g cells/g CH 4 , a methanol concentration of 0.28 mg/mL, and a CH 4 to methanol conversion efficiency of 0.22 mol/mol were obtained, respectively. Besides methanotrophs (14.85%) and other bacteria, Cyanobacteria were also identified in the HTMC with a high abundancy (32.16%), which could broaden the application of HTMC for simultaneous utilization of CH 4 and CO 2 from raw biogas.

Synthesis of uranium mixed anion compounds synthesized using the Boron-Chalcogen Mixture method: Ba 6 Co 6 U 0·9 1S 13·5 O 0.5 and Ba 5·47 K 0·53 Zn 6 US 13·5 O 0.5

Mixed anion compounds have exhibited interesting structures and properties that differ from compounds only incorporating a single anion in their composition. Unfortunately, difficulties in the synthetic methods used to obtain these materials has slowed the evolution of this field, prompting investigations into alternate synthetic pathways to these materials. Our recently establish Boron-Chalcogen Mixture (BCM) method, which was originally developed for the synthesis of pure actinide chalcogenides from oxides, has been adapted to achieve the partial oxide to sulfide conversion of Ba 2 MUO 6 (M = Co, Zn) which resulted in two new uranium (IV/V) oxysulfide compounds, Ba 6 Co 6 U 0·91 S 13·5 O 0.5 and Ba 5·47 K 0·53 Zn 6 US 13·5 O 0.5 These compounds crystallize in the tetragonal crystal system adopting the space group I4/mcm. Finally, their syntheses, crystal structures, and trends observed in the pursuit of these new mixed anion compounds are reported.

Selective Sorbent Design: CaS Aerogel for Rapid Remediation of Aqueous Pb (II)

Heavy metals are a persistent environmental problem due to their high toxicity, even at very low concentrations (parts per billion, ppb). The removal of such diluted heavy metals is challenging because of the competition the counterions (Ca 2+ , Na + , Mg 2+ , etc.) present in natural water bodies. The design of sorbents capable of removing ions below the action limit (15 ppb for Pb 2+ ) requires a strong driving force for selective uptake and rapid removal. In this work, we report the synthesis of porous CaS aerogels (surface area = 143.6 m 2 /g) by oxidative assembly of CaS nanoparticles and describe their use in selective Pb 2+ ion remediation from water. Despite the presence of amorphous CaCO 3 (up to 50 wt %) in the gel network, the gels demonstrated a capacity of 17.1 mmol Pb/g aerogel (3543 mg/g), and this could be augmented to 22.5 mmol Pb/g aerogel (4593 mg/g) by modifying the synthesis to reduce CaCO 3 content to ca. 15 wt %. Moreover, the selectivity of CaS aerogels toward Pb 2+ ions is high, as evidenced by little-to-no change in the distribution constant (K d ∼ 10 4 ) in the presence of competing ions (1 M) such as Na + , Mg 2+ , and Ca 2+ . During remediation with low concentrations (100 ppb) of Pb 2+ with CaS aerogels, the level of Pb 2+ dropped to 5.4 ppb (below the 15 ppb EPA limit) within 1 h with a 95.4% removal efficiency. In contrast to the CO 2 supercritically dried aerogels, lower surface area ambient dried gels (xerogels) only remove 40% of the lead ions from a 100 ppb solution, saturating within 1 h. The efficiency and rapidity of selective Pb 2+ uptake using CdS aerogels arise from a combination of a strong thermodynamic driving force for cation exchange (K eq = 2.5 × 10 27 ) and chemisorption along with favorable kinetics associated with the high surface area porous architecture. These results show that formation of high surface area metal chalcogenide aerogels by oxidative assembly to form nanocrystalline architectures, as previously demonstrated for II−VI and IV−VI semiconductors, can be extended to the more highly ionic alkaline earth sulfides.

Arsenic Fate in Peat Controlled by the pH-Dependent Role of Reduced Sulfur

Reduced sulfur (S) has a contrasting role in the fate of arsenic (As) in peatlands. Sulfur bridges provide efficient binding of As to organic carbon (C), but the formation of aqueous As–S species, so-called thioarsenates, leads to a low to no sorption tendency to organic C functional groups. Here, we studied how pH changes the role of reduced S in desorption and retention of presorbed As in model peat. Control desorption experiments without S addition revealed that As was mobilized, predominantly as arsenite, in all treatments with relative mobilization increasing with pH (4.5 < 7.0 < 8.5). Addition of sulfide or polysulfide caused substantial As retention at acidic conditions but significantly enhanced As desorption compared to controls at neutral to alkaline pH. Thioarsenates dominated As speciation at pH 7.0 and 8.5 (maximum, 79%) and remained in solution without (re)sorption to peat. Predominance of arsenite in control experiments and no evidence of surface-bound thioarsenates at pH 7.0 suggest mobilization to proceed via arsenite desorption, reaction with dissolved or surface-bound reduced S, and formation of thioarsenates. Our results suggest that natural or management-related increases in pH or increases in reduced S in near-neutral pH environments can turn organic matter from an As sink into a source.

Simulated Aquifer Heterogeneity Leads to Enhanced Attenuation and Multiple Retention Processes of Zinc

Alluvial aquifers serve as one of the main water sources for domestic, agricultural, and industrial purposes globally. Groundwater quality, however, can be threatened by naturally occurring and anthropogenic metal contaminants. Differing hydrologic and biogeochemical conditions between predominantly coarse-grained aquifer sediments and embedded layers or lenses of fine-grained materials lead to variation in metal behavior. Here, we examine processes controlling Zn partitioning within a dual-pore domain-reconstructed alluvial aquifer. Natural coarse aquifer sediments from the Wind River-Little Wind River floodplain near Riverton, WY, were used in columns with or without fine-grained lenses to examine biogeochemical controls on Zn concentrations, retention mechanisms, and transport. Furthermore, following the introduction of Zn to the groundwater source, Zn preferentially accumulated in the fine-grained lenses, despite their small volumetric contributions. While the clay fraction dominated Zn retention in the sandy aquifer, the lenses supported additional reaction pathways of retention—the reducing conditions within the lenses resulted in ZnS precipitation, overriding the contribution of organic matter. Zinc concentration in the groundwater controlled the formation of Zn-clays and Zn-layered double hydroxides, whereas the extent of sulfide production controlled precipitation of ZnS. Our findings illustrate how both spatial and compositional heterogeneities govern the extent and mechanisms of Zn retention in intricate groundwater systems, with implications for plume behavior and groundwater quality.
