A silver ion water sterilization system

Small amounts of silver are incorporated in mixture of ion exchange resins, and water passing through this mixture is thus exposed to silver ion concentration. System is useful in self-contained water systems except city water systems where residual chlorine level is stipulated.

Effects of the thermal sterilization procedure on polymeric products

Properties of samples are tested, after thermal exposure, and values are compared with unexposed samples. Thermal stability or compatibility ratings of formulated or compounded organic polymers using trade names are made and degree of change in measured properties is assessed. Products are rated compatible, marginal, or not compatible.

Application of planetary quarantine methodology and spacecraft sterilization technology to improved health care delivery.

In 1969 the Jet Propulsion Laboratory undertook an investigation to determine which of its space-derived capabilities could make significant contributions to the improvement of health care delivery in the U.S. The area of planetary quarantine was identified as one of high relevance. Two studies were conducted in this connection. The first study, which could contribute to infection reduction and control, was concerned with conversion of infection implicated complex, nonheat sterilizable equipment to dry heat, sterilizable equipment by changes in design and materials of construction. The second study area related to hospital acquired infection is clean room technology. A definite investigation has been performed to demonstrate and statistically evaluate performance under controlled conditions.

Self-sterilizing polymers

Addition of approximately 1% paraformaldehyde to room-temperature-vulcanizing potting polymer results in effective, controllable germicide. When heated above ambient temperatures, paraformaldehyde releases dry formaldehyde, which can penetrate enclosed areas and packages, will not damage material, and leaves no permanent residue.

Regenerating Water-Sterilizing Resins

Iodine-dispensing resin can be regenerated after iodine content has been depleted, without being removed from water system. Resin is used to make water potable by killing bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Regeneration technique may be come basis of water purifier for very long space missions. Enough crystalline iodine for multiple regenerations during mission can be stored in one small cartridge. Cartridge could be inserted in waterline as necessary on signal from iodine monitor or timer.

Beyond the sterile cockpit

Consideration is given to some of the negative aspects of the trend toward increased automation of aircraft flight decks. The history of automated devices for navigation, communications and detection on board aircraft is reviewed. Instances of automatic system failure are identified which have led to accidents, and the events surrounding the downing of Korean Airlines Flight 747 are reexamined within the context of a computer-based system failure. Finally, new software and interactive systems to reduce navigational error due to inadequate computer-assisted flight instruction (CAI) are described, with emphasis given to speech processing and intelligent CAI systems.

Mars soil - A sterile regolith or a medium for plant growth?

The mineralogical composition and the physical, chemical and mechanical properties of the Mars soil have been the subject of a number of studies. Though definitive mineralogical measurements are lacking, elemental-chemical analyses and simulation experiments have indicated that clays are major components of the soil and that iron is present as adsorbed ion and as amorphous mineral coating the clay particles (Banin, 1986). Whether this soil can support plant growth or food production, utilizing conventional or advanced cultivational technologies, is a question that has not been thoroughly analyzed, but may be of importance and usefulness for the future exploration of Mars. Assuming that the proposed model of Mars soil components is valid, and drawing additional information from the analyses of the SNC meteorites believed to be ejected Mars rocks - the present contribution analyzes and evaluates the suitability of the soil as a medium for plant growth, attempting to identify the most critical limiting factors for such an undertaking and the possible remedies.

Comparison of numerical simulation and experimental data for steam-in-place sterilization

A complex problem involving convective flow of a binary mixture containing a condensable vapor and noncondensable gas in a partially enclosed chamber was modelled and results compared to transient experimental values. The finite element model successfully predicted transport processes in dead-ended tubes with inside diameters of 0.4 to 1.0 cm. When buoyancy driven convective flow was dominant, temperature and mixture compositions agreed with experimental data. Data from 0.4 cm tubes indicate diffusion to be the primary air removal method in small diameter tubes and the diffusivity value in the model to be too large.

Determination of the Residence Time of Food Particles During Aseptic Sterilization

The paper describes a non-invasive method to measure the time an individual particle takes to move through a length of stainless steel pipe. The food product is in two phase flow (liquids and solids) and passes through a pipe with pressures of approximately 60 psig and temperatures of 270-285 F. The proposed problem solution is based on the detection of transitory amplitude and/or phase changes in a microwave transmission path caused by the passage of the particles of interest. The particles are enhanced in some way, as will be discussed later, such that they will provide transitory changes that are distinctive enough not to be mistaken for normal variations in the received signal (caused by the non-homogeneous nature of the medium). Two detectors (transmission paths across the pipe) will be required and place at a known separation. A minimum transit time calculation is made from which the maximum velocity can be determined. This provides the minimum residence time. Also average velocity and statistical variations can be computed so that the amount of 'over-cooking' can be determined.

Experimental Modeling of Sterilization Effects for Atmospheric Entry Heating on Microorganisms

The objective of this research was to design, build, and test an experimental apparatus for studying the parameters of atmospheric entry heating, and the inactivation of temperature-resistant bacterial spores. The apparatus is capable of controlled, rapid heating of sample coupons to temperatures of 200 to 350 C and above. The vacuum chamber permits operation under vacuum or special atmospheric gas mixtures.
