Emergence of the isotropic Kitaev honeycomb lattice $α$–RuCl 3 and its magnetic properties

Here, we present a comprehensive investigation of the crystal and magnetic structures of the van der Waals antiferromagnet $α$–RuCl 3 using single crystal x-ray and neutron diffraction. The crystal structure at room temperature is a monoclinic (C2/m). However, with decreasing temperature, a remarkable first-order structural phase transition is observed, leading to the emergence of a rhombohedral ($R\bar3$) structure characterized by three-fold rotational symmetry forming an isotropic honeycomb lattice. On further cooling, a zigzag-type antiferromagnetic order develops below $T_{\textrm{N}} = 6\sim6.6$ K. The critical exponent of the magnetic order parameter was determined to be $\beta = 0.11(1)$, which is close to the two-dimensional Ising model. Additionally, the angular dependence of the magnetic critical field of the zigzag antiferromagnetic order for the polarized ferromagnetic phase reveals a six-fold rotational symmetry within the ab–plane. These findings reflect the symmetry associated with the Ising-like bond-dependent Kitaev spin interactions and underscore the universality of the Kitaev interaction-dominated antiferromagnetic system.

La 2 ⁢O 3 ⁢Mn 2 ⁢Se 2 : A correlated insulating layered d-wave altermagnet

Altermagnets represent a new class of magnetic phases without net magnetization, invariant under a combination of rotation and time reversal. Unlike conventional collinear antiferromagnets (AFM), altermagnets could lead to new correlated states and important material properties deriving from their nonrelativistic spin-split band structure. Indeed, they serve as the magnetic analogue of unconventional superconductors and can yield spin-polarized electrical currents in the absence of external magnetic fields, making them promising candidates for next-generation spintronics. Here, we report altermagnetism in the correlated insulator, magnetically ordered tetragonal oxychalcogenide, L⁢a 2 ⁢O 3⁢ M⁢n 2 ⁢S⁢e 2 . Symmetry analysis reveals a 𝑑 𝑥 2 −𝑦 2 -wave-like spin-momentum locking arising from the M⁢n 2 ⁢O Lieb lattice, supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Magnetic measurements confirm the AFM transition below ∼166K while neutron pair distribution function analysis reveals a 2D short-range magnetic order that persists above the Néel temperature. Single crystals are grown and characterized using x-ray diffraction, optical and electron microscopy, and micro-Raman spectroscopy to confirm the crystal structure, stoichiometry, and uniformity. Furthermore, our findings establish L⁢a 2⁢ O 3 ⁢M⁢n 2⁢ S⁢e 2 as a model altermagnetic system realized on a Lieb lattice.

Electronic structure, magnetic properties, and pairing tendencies of the copper-based honeycomb lattice Na 2 Cu 2 TeO 6

Spin-1/2 chains with alternating antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) couplings have attracted considerable interest due to the topological character of their spin excitations. Here, using density functional theory and density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) methods, we have systematically studied the dimerized chain system Na 2 Cu 2 TeO 6 with a d 9 electronic configuration. Near the Fermi level, in the nonmagnetic phase the dominant states are mainly contributed by the Cu 3d x 2 -y 2 orbitals highly hybridized with the O 2p orbitals, leading to an “effective” single-orbital low-energy model. By calculating the relevant hoping amplitudes, we explain the size and sign of the exchange interactions in Na 2 Cu 2 TeO 6 . In addition, a single-orbital Hubbard model is constructed for this dimerized chain system where the quantum fluctuations are taken into account. Both AFM and FM couplings (leading to an ↑|-|↓-|↓-↑| state) along the chain were found in our DMRG and Lanczos calculations, in agreement with density functional theory and neutron-scattering results. The hole pairing binding energy ΔE is predicted to be negative at Hubbard U~ 11eV, suggesting incipient pairing tendencies.

Shear–Mediated Stabilization of Spin Spiral Order in Multiferroic NiI 2

Type-II multiferroicity from non-collinear spin order is recently explored in the van der Waals material NiI 2 . Despite the importance for improper ferroelectricity, the microscopic mechanism of the helimagnetic order remains poorly understood. Here, the magneto-structural phases of NiI 2 are investigated using resonant magnetic X-ray scattering (RXS) and X-ray diffraction. Two competing magnetic phases are identified. Below 60 K, an incommensurate magnetic reflection (q ≈ [0.143,0,1.49] reciprocal lattice units) is observed which exhibits finite circular dichroism in RXS, signaling the inversion symmetry-breaking helimagnetic ground state. At elevated temperature, in the non-polar phase (60 K < T < 75 K), a distinct q ≈ [0.087,0.087,1.5] magnetic order is observed, attributed to a collinear incommensurate (CI) state. The first-order CI-helix transition is concomitant with a structural transition characterized by a significant interlayer shear, which drives the helimagnetic ground state as evidenced by a mean-field Heisenberg model including interlayer exchange and its coupling to the structural distortion. Furthermore, these findings identify interlayer magneto-structural coupling as the key driver behind multiferroicity in NiI 2 .

Uniaxial stress study of spin and charge stripes in La1.875Ba0.125CuO4 by 139La NMR and 63Cu NQR

We study the response of spin and charge order in single crystals of La1.875Ba0.125CuO4 to uniaxial stress, through 139La nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and 63Cu nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR), respectively. In unstressed La1.875Ba0.125CuO4, the low-temperature tetragonal structure onsets below TLTT = 57 K, while the charge order and the spin order transition temperatures are TCO = 54 K and TSO = 37 K, respectively. We find that uniaxial stress along the [110] lattice direction strongly suppresses TCO and TSO, but has little effect on TLTT. In other words, under stress along [110] a large splitting (≈ 21 K) opens between TCO and TLTT, showing that these transitions are not tightly linked. On the other hand, stress along [100] causes a slight suppression of TLTT but has essentially no effect on TCO and TSO. Magnetic field H along [110] stabilizes the spin order: the suppression of TSO under stress along [110] is slower under H ∥ [110] than H ∥ [001]. We develop a Landau free energy model and interpret our findings as an interplay of symmetry breaking terms driven by the orientation of spins.

Emergent Inductance from Chiral Orbital Currents in a Bulk Ferrimagnet

Here, we report the discovery of a new form of inductance in the bulk ferrimagnet Mn 3 ⁢Si 2 ⁢Te 6 , which features strong spin-orbit coupling, large magnetic anisotropy, and pronounced magnetoelastic interactions. Below its Curie temperature (𝑇 𝐶 ≈ 78 K), Mn 3 ⁢Si 2 ⁢Te 6 hosts chiral orbital currents (COC) that circulate within the crystal lattice and give rise to collective electronic behavior [Control of chiral orbital currents in a colossal magnetoresistance material, Nature (London) 611, 467 (2022).]. By applying a magnetic field along the hard 𝑐 axis and driving the system with low-frequency currents, we uncover a giant inductive response up to millhenry scale, originating from first-order reconfigurations of COC domains. These domains act as coherent mesoscopic inductive elements that resist reversal upon current reduction, producing a large electromotive force and sharply increasing voltage. This emergent inductance defies classical models, occurs without superconductivity or engineered nanostructures, and opens a new frontier in orbital-based quantum functionality and device concepts.

Selected magnetoelectrical phonon stiffening in Cr 2 ⁢O 3

A thorough understanding of lattice dynamics, particularly how they couple with spin through spin-phonon interactions, is crucial for pioneering new spin-caloritronic applications. Here, despite extensive studies on Cr 2 ⁢O 3 , the origin of nonlinear thermal expansions and the unusual stiffening of optical phonon modes is still elusive. Through inelastic neutron scattering and atomistic calculations, we found that these behaviors can be attributed to the renormalization of electron states owing to the magnetic transition, and we ruled out the effects from thermal expansion, phonon anharmonicity, magnetostriction, or electron-phonon interactions. Importantly, our quantitative modeling suggests that the common belief that dynamic spin-phonon interactions are the origin of anomalous phonon energy stiffening in magnetic compounds does not apply in Cr 2 ⁢O 3 .

Lattice collective modes from a continuum model of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene

Here, we show that the insulating states of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene support a series of collective modes corresponding to local particle-hole excitations on triangular lattice sites. Our theory is based on a continuum model of the magic angle flat bands. When the system is insulating at moiré band filling ν = -3, our calculations show that the ground state supports seven low-energy modes that lie well below the charge gap throughout the moiré Brillouin zone, one of which couples strongly to THz photons. The low-energy collective modes are faithfully described by a model with a local SU(8) degree of freedom in each moiré unit cell that we identify as the direct product of spin, valley, and an orbital pseudospin. Apart from spin and valley-wave modes, the collective mode spectrum includes a low-energy intraflavor exciton mode associated with transitions between flat valence and conduction band orbitals.

Bose–Einstein condensation of a two-magnon bound state in a spin-1 triangular lattice

In ordered magnets, the elementary excitations are spin waves (magnons), which obey Bose–Einstein statistics. Similarly to Cooper pairs in superconductors, magnons can be paired into bound states under attractive interactions. The Zeeman coupling to a magnetic field is able to tune the particle density through a quantum critical point, beyond which a ‘hidden order’ is predicted to exist. Here, in this work, we report direct observation of the Bose–Einstein condensation of the two-magnon bound state in Na 2 BaNi(PO 4 ) 2 . Comprehensive thermodynamic measurements confirmed the two-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensation quantum critical point at the saturation field. Inelastic neutron scattering experiments were performed to establish the microscopic model. An exact solution revealed stable two-magnon bound states that were further confirmed by electron spin resonance and nuclear magnetic resonance experiments, demonstrating that the quantum critical point is due to the pair condensation, and the phase below the saturation field is likely the long-sought-after spin nematic phase.

Synthesis and Characterization of Metastable Cobalt Honeycomb KCoAsO 4

The Kitaev model has served as a long-sought-after target in the realization of a quantum spin liquid that could host Majorana Fermions. Such non-Abelian anyons could revolutionize quantum computing if properly implemented to overcome decoherence. A 3d 7 electronic configuration, like Co 2+ , has been explored by theory and experimental work to design Kitaev materials. Here, in this study, we report the synthesis of a new cobaltate honeycomb material KCoAsO 4 . The compound is synthesized through a low-temperature solution route and crystallized in space group R¯3 with lattice parameters a = 5.0394(1) and c = 28.6790(1) as determined by neutron powder diffraction. The crystal structure follows motifs similar to those of the honeycomb compound BaCo2(AsO 4 ) 2 but presents differing magnetic behavior. Magnetization/heat capacity measurements on the powder show antiferromagnetic transition T N = 14 K. Two lower-temperature transitions are present in susceptibility at low field that resemble spin reorientations. Magnetization data as a function of field have curvature indicative of metamagnetic behavior below the magnetic ordering temperature, with the magnetic ordering suppressed upon application of a higher magnetic field. Computational studies suggest the presence of a weak nearest-neighbor Kitaev term, K 1 , consistent with related honeycomb cobaltates. Together, the data suggest that this material should present a new platform for developing Kitaev quantum spin liquids.

Multitude of topological phase transitions in bipartite dice and Lieb lattices with interacting electrons and Rashba coupling

We report the results of a Hartree-Fock study applied to interacting electrons moving in two different bipartite lattices: the dice and the Lieb lattices, at half-filling. Both lattices develop ferrimagnetic order in the phase diagram U-λ, where U is the Hubbard on-site repulsion and λ is the Rashba spin-orbit coupling strength. Our main result is the observation of an unexpected multitude of topological phases for both lattices. All these phases are ferrimagnetic, but they differ among themselves in their set of six Chern numbers (six numbers because the unit cells have three atoms). Here, the Chern numbers |C| observed in our study range from 0 to 3, showing that large Chern numbers can be obtained by the effect of electronic correlations, adding to the recently discussed methodologies to increase |C| based on extending the hopping range in tight-binding models, using sudden quenches, or photonic crystals, all without including electronic interactions.

Probing the effect of magnetic field on charge order in the quasi-two-dimensional Mott insulator κ - (ET) 2 Hg(SCN) 2 Cl

Molecular-based quasi-two-dimensional charge-ordered Mott insulators can possess both spin S = 1/2 and an electric dipole degree of freedom residing on each (BEDT - TTF) 2 lattice site. There exists a theoretical proposal for a magnetoelectric effect in such a material, which can manifest itself as a sensitivity of charge distribution on (BEDT - TTF) 2 dimers to the magnetic field. Here in this work, we used Raman scattering spectroscopy in the magnetic field up to 31 T applied perpendicular to the two-dimensional triangular lattice planes to probe a magnetoelectric effect in $\kappa$ - (ET) 2 H g (SCN) 2 Cl. This is a model compound, which shows charge order and antiferromagnetic correlations at temperatures below 30 K. We discuss possible reasons for the absence of an observable magnetoelectric effect in the probed temperature and magnetic field ranges.

Operator product expansion for radial lattice quantization of 3D ϕ 4 theory

At its critical point, the three-dimensional lattice Ising model is described by a conformal field theory (CFT), the 3D Ising CFT. Instead of carrying out simulations on Euclidean lattices, we use the quantum finite elements method to implement radially quantized critical ϕ 4 theory on simplicial lattices approaching R × S 2 . Computing the four-point function of identical scalars, we demonstrate the power of radial quantization by the accurate determination of the scaling dimensions Δ ε and Δ T as well as ratios of the operator product expansion coefficients f σ σ ε and f σ σ T of the first spin-0 and spin-2 primary operators ε and T of the 3D Ising CFT. Strain-Modulated Slater-Mott Crossover of Pseudospin-Half Square-Lattice in ( SrIrO 3 ) 1 / ( SrTiO 3 ) 1 Superlattices

Here, we report on the epitaxial strain-driven electronic and antiferromagnetic modulations of a pseudospin-half square lattice realized in superlattices of (SrIrO 3 ) 1 /(SrTiO 3 )1. With increasing compressive strain, we find the low-temperature insulating behavior to be strongly suppressed with a corresponding systematic reduction of both the Néel temperature and the staggered moment. However, despite such a suppression, the system remains weakly insulating above the Néel transition. The emergence of metallicity is observed under large compressive strain but only at temperature far above the Néel transition. These behaviors are characteristics of the Slater-Mott crossover regime, providing a unique experimental model system of the spin-half Hubbard Hamiltonian with a tunable intermediate coupling strength.

String Phase in an Artificial Spin Ice

Abstract One-dimensional strings of local excitations are a fascinating feature of the physical behavior of strongly correlated topological quantum matter. Here we study strings of local excitations in a classical system of interacting nanomagnets, the Santa Fe Ice geometry of artificial spin ice. We measured the moment configuration of the nanomagnets, both after annealing near the ferromagnetic Curie point and in a thermally dynamic state. While the Santa Fe Ice lattice structure is complex, we demonstrate that its disordered magnetic state is naturally described within a framework of emergent strings. We show experimentally that the string length follows a simple Boltzmann distribution with an energy scale that is associated with the system’s magnetic interactions and is consistent with theoretical predictions. The results demonstrate that string descriptions and associated topological characteristics are not unique to quantum models but can also provide a simplifying description of complex classical systems with non-trivial frustration.

One-loop matching for quark dipole operators in a gradient-flow scheme

The quark chromoelectric dipole (qCEDM) operator is a CP-violating operator describing, at hadronic energies, beyond-the-standard-model contributions to the electric dipole moment of particles with nonzero spin. In this paper we define renormalized dipole operators in a regularization-independent scheme using the gradient flow, and we perform the matching at one loop in perturbation theory to renormalized operators of the same and lower dimension in the more familiar MS scheme. We also determine the matching coefficients for the quark chromo-magnetic dipole operator (qCMDM), which contributes for example to matrix elements relevant to CP-violating and CP-conserving kaon decays. The calculation provides a basis for future lattice QCD computations of hadronic matrix elements of the qCEDM and qCMDM operators.

Mott and generalized Wigner crystal states in WSe 2 /WS 2 moiré superlattices

Moiré superlattices can be used to engineer strongly correlated electronic states in two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures, as recently demonstrated in the correlated insulating and superconducting states observed in magic-angle twisted-bilayer graphene and ABC trilayer graphene/boron nitride moiré superlattices. Transition metal dichalcogenide moiré heterostructures provide another model system for the study of correlated quantum phenomena because of their strong light–matter interactions and large spin–orbit coupling. However, experimental observation of correlated insulating states in this system is challenging with traditional transport techniques. Here we report the optical detection of strongly correlated phases in semiconducting WSe 2 /WS 2 moiré superlattices. We use a sensitive optical detection technique and reveal a Mott insulator state at one hole per superlattice site and surprising insulating phases at 1/3 and 2/3 filling of the superlattice, which we assign to generalized Wigner crystallization on the underlying lattice. Furthermore, the spin–valley optical selection rules of transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructures allow us to optically create and investigate low-energy excited spin states in the Mott insulator. We measure a very long spin relaxation lifetime of many microseconds in the Mott insulating state, orders of magnitude longer than that of charge excitations. Here, our studies highlight the value of using moiré superlattices beyond graphene to explore correlated physics.

Local magnetic moments due to loop currents in metals

We present Hartree-Fock calculations on a simple model to obtain the conditions of formation of local magnetic moments due to loop currents $L$ $o$ and spin-loop currents $L$ $s$ and compare them to the conditions of formation of local spin moments $M$ which were given long ago in a similar approximation by Anderson. A model with three degenerate orbitals sitting on an equilateral triangle, with on-site and nearest-neighbor repulsions $U$ and $V$, respectively, and intersite kinetic energy, hybridizing with conduction electrons with a parameter $Δ$ is investigated. $L$ $o$ and $L$ $s$ are promoted by large $V$/$Δ$ and their magnitude is relatively unaffected by $U$/$Δ$. Spin-magnetic moments $M$ promoted by large $U$/$Δ$ on the other hand are adversely affected by $V$/$Δ$. In this model, $L$ $o$ for $V$ multiplied by the number of neighbors is approximately the same as the $M$ promoted by $U$ in Anderson’s local model for $M$. $L$ $o$ and $L$ $s$ are degenerate if exchange interactions and Hund’s rule are neglected but $L$ $o$ is favored when they are included. Many of the qualitative results are visible in an expression for the Hartree-Fock ground state energy derived as a function of small $L$ $o$ , $L$ $s$ , and $M$. Numerical minimization of the Hartree-Fock energy is presented for larger values. Additionally, we also briefly discuss the connection and differences of the interaction-generated orbital currents and spin currents discussed here and generalized to a lattice with the topological states in metals and semiconductors.
