Shear strength of a refractory high entropy alloy MoNbTaVW under high pressure

Radial X-ray diffraction (R-XRD) was performed in situ using a Panoramic Diamond Anvil Cell on the refractory high entropy alloy MoNbTaVW. The lattice parameters were determined through a Le Bail fit using a body centered cubic (BCC) lattice of symmetry $Im$$\overline{3}$$m$ (international space group number 229). Upper and lower bounds to the shear strength were determined up to 80 GPa nonhydrostatically using copper as a pressure standard. The equation of state was derived at the magic angle ψ = 54.7° and yielded a bulk modulus of K 0 = 220.8 ± 1.65 GPa. The experimental lattice parameters and bulk modulus match closely with corresponding density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The BCC phase remains stable up to the highest pressure of 80 GPa studied and is shown to be elastically anisotropic. The shear strength was found to saturate around 70 GPa with a value of τ = 1.75 GPa, and the shear moduli are presented in different limits of iso-strain and iso-stress.

Structural, magneto transport and magnetic properties of Ruddlesden–Popper La 2-2x Sr 1+2x Mn 2 O 7 (0.42≤x≤0.52) layered manganites

The magneto transport of Ruddlesden–Popper, La 2-2x Sr 1+2x Mn 2 O 7 (0.42≤x≤0.52), 2-dimensional bilayered manganites have been investigated in a broad temperature range. The samples have been synthesized using the solid-state reaction method. Rietveld refinement of the X-ray diffraction data indicates the tetragonal structure formation with I4/mmm space group. The resistivity curves of the samples present a general characteristic of metal-insulator (MI) transition at certain temperature (T MI ). Besides, for samples with x = 0.48, 0.50, and 0.52, at a certain temperature (T CO ) well below T MI the charge ordering is also evident. Furthermore, the samples display a shallow upturn in resistivity below T min due to the Kondo like spin scattering effect, weak localization and electron-phonon interaction. The high temperature semiconducting (T>T MI ) region, the resistivity curve follows the 3D Mott’s variable hopping transport mechanism. The overall suppression of resistivity accounts for a substantial magnetoresistance by applying a magnetic field and the characteristic change in T MI , T CO , and T min are discussed. Temperature-dependent magnetization demonstrates the suppression of ferromagnetism and evident of antiferromagnetic nature with an apparent charge ordering with increasing concentration of Sr 2+ .

Study of structural, transport and magneto-crystalline anisotropy in La 1-x Sr x MnO 3 (0.30 ≤ x ≤ 0.40) perovskite manganites

In this paper we present structural, transport, magnetic and magneto-crystalline anisotropy of La 1–x Sr x MnO 3 (х = 0.30, 0.33, 0.36, and 0.40) synthesized using the solid-state reaction method. The X-ray diffraction pattern of the samples is well indexed to the rhombohedral structure with R 3 - c space group. Lattice parameters and unit cell volume are found to decrease monotonically upon increasing Sr 2+ concentration at La 3+ site. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirms the presence of Mn 4+ and Mn 3+ , the ratio of which (Mn 4+ /Mn 3+ ) increases from 0.44 to 0.64 with increasing Sr 2+ concentration. From the ρ(T) and M(T) data analysis, we find that T MI and M S are larger for x = 0.33 composition, suggesting a weakening of the double-exchange interaction due to competing super-exchange interactions in x = 0.30, 0.36 and 0.40 samples. We calculated MCA constant (K 1 ) by fitting the saturation magnetisation data at a higher magnetic field using the law of approach model, M = M S [1-a/H-b/H 2 ]-χH with K 1 2 = (105/8)bMs 2 and is in the order of 10 5 erg/cm 3 .

Enhanced coercivity in Fe5C2/SiO2 core/shell nanocrystals

Rod-shaped Fe5C2 and core/shell Fe5C2/SiO2 nanocrystals were synthesized via a solution-based chemical method. Structural analysis confirmed the monoclinic phase of Fe5C2 with space group C2/c. Zero-field-cooling (ZFC) and field-cooling (FC) magnetization curves revealed distinct magnetic behaviors: uncoated Fe5C2 exhibited a low-temperature FC plateau indicative of strong dipolar interactions, while Fe5C2/SiO2 showed a monotonic increase in FC magnetization, suggesting reduced dipolar interactions due to SiO2 surface passivation. Isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM) and DC demagnetization (DCD) measurements supported this trend, with δM plots confirming weaker dipolar interactions in the coated sample. Bloch’s law fitting of temperature-dependent saturation magnetization showed a smaller Bloch’s constant for pure Fe5C2 and a larger value for Fe5C2/SiO2, reflecting enhanced surface disorder and reduced exchange coupling in the latter. Notably, Fe5C2/SiO2 demonstrated increased coercivity, attributed to decreased dipolar interaction and elevated surface anisotropy. Kneller’s law fitting yielded higher blocking temperatures for Fe5C2 (476 K) than Fe5C2/SiO2 (456 K), highlighting the impact of dipolar interactions on magnetic relaxation. These findings illustrate how SiO2 coatings effectively modulate dipolar interactions and enhance coercivity in Fe5C2 nanocrystals.

Controlling inversion disorder in a stoichiometric spinel magnet

In the study of frustrated quantum magnets, it is essential to be able to control the nature and degree of site disorder during the growth process, as many measurement techniques are incapable of distinguishing between site disorder and frustration-induced spin disorder. Pyrochlore-structured spinel oxides can serve as model systems of geometrically frustrated three-dimensional quantum magnets; however, the nature of the magnetism in one well-studied spinel, ZnFe 2 O 4 , remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate simultaneous control of both stoichiometry and inversion disorder in the growth of ZnFe 2 O 4 single crystals, directly yielding a revised understanding of both the collective spin behavior and lattice symmetry. Crystals grown in the stoichiometric limit with minimal site inversion disorder contravene all the previously suggested exotic spin phases in ZnFe 2 O 4 . Furthermore, the structure is confirmed on the F$\bar{4}$3m space group with broken inversion symmetry that induces antiferroelectricity. The effective tuning of magnetic behavior by site disorder in the presence of robust antiferroelectricity makes ZnFe 2 O 4 of special interest to multiferroic devices.

LiPF 6 under pressure: a symmetry-mode-based structural analysis

The lithium salt LiPF 6 is a key component in commercial lithium-ion battery (LIB) electrolytes. However, its structural properties under pressure remain unexplored, despite increasing interest in the effect of pressure on electrolyte behaviour, and a growing interest in high pressure synthesis of new Li-hexafluoride cathode materials. Here, we present the first high pressure neutron diffraction study of solid LiPF 6 up to 7.4 GPa. Refinements reveal that the ambient rhombohedral structure (space group R$\overline{3}$) remains stable throughout, with pressure accommodated primarily by tilting of the corner-shared LiF 6 and PF 6 octahedra and contraction of the LiF 6 units. In conclusion, this study establishes a foundation for understanding the phase behaviour of Li-based hexafluorides under extreme conditions.

An idealized model for the crystal structure of intermetallic compounds isostructural with Mg 3 Cr 2 Al 18

Mg 3 Cr 2 Al 18 (abbreviated in this report as MCA) is the parent phase for a large class of intermetallic compounds that belong to the cubic crystal space group, $Fd\overline{3}m$. The purpose of this paper is to introduce an ideal, unrelaxed crystal structure for compounds isostructural with MCA. There are five distinct atomic sublattices in MCA compounds, which can be denoted, $A, B, C, D,$ and $E$. With this, a general description for MCA structures can be written as $A^{8a}_{1}B^{16c}_{2}C^{16d}_{2}D^{48f}_{6}E^{96g}_{12}$, where the superscripts represent the Wyckoff special equipoints associated with the various sublattices in MCA, and the subscripts indicate the contributions of each sublattice to the stoichiometry of one formula unit in an any given MCA structured compound. Sublattices D and E are where deviations from ideality occur in real, MCA-like compounds. This paper examines MCA bond lengths, nearest-neighbour polyhedral arrangements, 3-D sublattice crystal structures, 2-D atom tessellation patterns, and crystal chemical effects associated with atomic relaxations on the $D$ and $E$ sublattices. The ideal MCA crystal structure developed in this report provides an appropriate initial structure for use as input to crystal structure refinements of diffraction data for MCA-like phases being examined experimentally, or as input for computational, atomistic simulations of the structures of such compounds.

Vibrational modes and crystallographic structure of Cd 3 As 2 and (Cd 1-x Zn x ) 3 As 2 epilayers

Low-temperature Raman scattering is used to study the crystal structure of molecular-beam epitaxially grown layers of the Dirac semimetal Cd 3 As 2 and its related alloy (Cd 1-x Zn x ) 3 As 2 . The combination of narrow-linewidth spectra, multiple growth directions and full polarization analysis allows improved accuracy in identifying the irreducible representation of over 57 Raman-active vibrations. Several disagreements with previous identifications are found. Structurally, the results agree with the centrosymmetric I41/acd space group of bulk-grown Cd 3 As 2 and are clearly distinct from the Raman spectra of nanoscale platelets and wires. Three-fold twinning is seen in (112) Cd 3 As 2 grown on (111) zincblende substrates corresponding to the three possible tetragonal orientations. In dilute (Cd 1-x Zn x ) 3 As 2 , phonons have a frequency and scattering amplitude dependence on Zn concentration that is continuous with Cd 3 As 2 but at least one frequency is absent at the alloy endpoint, preventing a simple one-mode description of the alloy phonon.

Short-range ferromagnetic order due to Ir substitutions in single-crystalline Ba(Co 1-x Ir x ) 2 As 2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.25)

The ternary-arsenide compound BaCo 2 As 2 was previously proposed to be in proximity to a quantum-critical point where long-range ferromagnetic (FM) order is suppressed by quantum fluctuations. In this paper we report the effect of Ir substitutions for Co on the magnetic and thermal properties of Ba(Co 1-x Ir x ) 2 As 2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.25) single crystals. These compositions all crystallize in an uncollapsed body-centered-tetragonal ThCr 2 Si 2 structure with space group I4/mmm. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal clear signatures of short-range FM ordering for x ≥ 0.11 below a nearly composition-independent characteristic temperature T cl ≈ 13 K. The small variation of T cl with x, thermomagnetic irreversibility between zero-field-cooled and field-cooled magnetic susceptibility versus T, the occurrence of hysteresis in magnetization versus field isotherms at low field and temperature, and very small spontaneous and remanent magnetizations <0.01 μ B /f.u. together indicate that the FM response arises from short-range FM ordering of FM spin clusters as previously inferred to occur in Ca(Co 1–x Ir x ) 2–y As 2 . Heat-capacity Cp(T) data do not exhibit any clear feature around Tcl, consistent with the very small moments of the FM clusters. The Cp(T) in the paramagnetic temperature regime 25–300 K is well described by the sum of a Sommerfeld electronic contribution and Debye and Einstein lattice contributions where the latter lattice contribution suggests the presence of low-frequency optic modes associated with the heavy Ba atoms in the crystals.

Mn-induced spin glass behavior in metallic Ir 3 Sn 7-x Mn x

Transition metal stannides are usually semiconductors with a narrow band gap. We report experimental investigation on metallic Ir 3 Sn 7– x Mn x ( x = 0 and 0.56). Single crystal x-ray diffraction refinement indicates that Ir 3 Sn 7– x Mn x crystals form a cubic structure (space group Im 3 - m ) with the lattice parameter a = 9.362(4) Å for x = 0 and 9.328(6) Å for x = 0.56. The electrical resistivity shows metallic behavior between 2 K and 300 K with T 2 dependence at T < 30 K for x = 0, reflecting the Fermi-liquid ground state. While Ir 3 Sn 7 exhibits weak diamagnetism, partial substitution of Sn by Mn results in spin glass behavior in Ir 3 Sn 7- x Mn x below T g ~ 13 K for x = 0.56. Remarkably, an upturn in the resistivity is observed in x = 0.56 below ~2 T g , suggesting strong spin fluctuation. This fluctuation is suppressed by the application of magnetic field, which is reflected in the observation of negative magnetoresistance. The unusual properties that emerge due to Mn doping are discussed.

Absence of long-range magnetic order in lithium-containing honeycombs in the Li–Cr–Sb(Te)–O phases

Li 3 ((LiCr)(Te/Sb))O 6 compounds where Cr atoms along with Li and Te or Sb are part of a honeycomb and are studied using magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and neutron diffraction. The oxides stoichiometries as determined from the neutron diffraction studies are Li 4.47 Cr 0.53 TeO 6 and Li 3.88 Cr 1.12 SbO 6 with a stable oxidation state of +3 for Cr. Both the compounds crystallize in space group C2/m with intermixing of cations at the 4g sites leaving the 2a sites preferentially for Te or Sb. Again, the Li + ions alone predominantly occur in the interlayer sites. Both the compounds show a broad anomaly in specific heat at 8 K, which is robust against 8 T. A corresponding anomaly is absent in the magnetic susceptibility but recovers from its derivative, dχ(T)/dT. Here, we ascertain the magnetic anomaly temperatures (T a ) of Li 4.47 Cr 0.53 TeO 6 and Li 3.88 Cr 1.12 SbO 6 as 5.9 K and 6.7 K respectively from specific heat. Although the physical properties indicated a low temperature anomaly, neutron diffraction data did not reveal a magnetic signal or a structural anomaly down to 1.5 K. This rules out a conventional long-range ordered magnetic ground state in either compounds. Combining the results from specific heat, neutron diffraction and electron paramagnetic resonance, we put forth a scenario of depleted honeycomb lattice of Cr 3+ with predominant short-range magnetic correlations as the magnetic ground states of the title compounds.

Structure and magnetism of the triangular lattice material YbBO 3

Abstract YbBO 3 is a member of the orthoborate family of materials which contains a triangular arrangement of Yb 3+ ions. Here we study the physical properties of YbBO 3 with neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering, specific heat, and ac susceptibility measurements. The neutron diffraction measurements confirm that our samples of YbBO 3 crystallize in the monoclinic space group C 2 / c (#15) which contains two crystallographically distinct Yb 3+ sites decorating a slightly distorted triangular lattice. Heat capacity and ac susceptibility measurements indicate a potential transition to magnetic order at 0.4 K. In agreement with these observations, neutron diffraction measurements at 0.044 K observe magnetic Bragg peaks which can be indexed by a propagation vector of (0 0 1). Although determining a unique spin configuration corresponding to the observed magnetic Bragg peaks is not possible, model refinements indicate that the ordered moments are likely in the range of 0.4–0.9 μ B and, notably, require moments on both Yb sites. In addition to the magnetic Bragg peaks, diffuse scattering at low Q is observed indicating that the transition does not correspond to complete long range magnetic order. The two-site picture for YbBO 3 is further evidenced by the number of crystal field excitations observed by inelastic neutron scattering measurements. Together these results show that YbBO 3 is a two-site triangular lattice material with signatures of long-range order as well as shorter ranged spin correlations.

Parameterizing empirical interatomic potentials for predicting thermophysical properties via an irreducible derivative approach: the case of ThO 2 and UO 2

The accuracy of classical physical property predictions using molecular dynamics simulations is determined by the quality of the interatomic potentials. Here we introduce a training approach for empirical interatomic potentials (EIPs) which is well suited for capturing phonons and phonon-related properties. Our approach is based on direct comparisons of the second- and third-order irreducible derivatives (IDs) between an EIP and the Born–Oppenheimer potential within density functional theory (DFT) calculations. IDs fully exploit space group symmetry and allow for training without redundant information. We demonstrate the fidelity of our approach in the context of ThO 2 and UO 2 , where we optimize parameters of an embedded-atom method potential in addition to core–shell interactions. Our EIPs provide thermophysical properties in good agreement with DFT and outperform widely utilized EIPs for phonon dispersion and thermal conductivity predictions. Reasonable estimates of thermal expansion and formation energies of Frenkel pairs are also obtained.

Large magnetoresistance and quantum oscillations observed in superconducting β -IrSn 4

Diverse quantum phenomena have been observed in TSn 4 transition metal (T) stannides, including superconductivity, nontrivial topology, and large magnetoresistance (MR) at low temperatures. Here, we report the experimental and theoretical investigation of tetragonal β-IrSn 4 (space group I 4 1 /acd) with the lattice parameters a = 6.362(3) Å and c = 22.723(0) Å. The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity indicates that β-IrSn 4 is a good metal with Fermi-liquid behavior above the superconducting transition at T c ∼ 0.7 K. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate it is non-magnetic. However, positive transverse MR with linear field dependence is observed. At T= 2 K and Μ 0 H = 14 T, the MR reaches 700% without sign of saturation. Shubnikov–de Haas oscillations are observed from proximity detector oscillator measurements up to 60 T. We experimentally extract several frequencies, and through comparison to first-principles calculations, identify corresponding electronic bands. For H // c, two strong oscillations, F 1 ≈ 109 and F 2 ≈ 302 T, allow us to determine effective masses 0.266m 0 and 0.300m 0 (m 0 is the free-electron mass), respectively. The topology of these bands is discussed.

Emergent symmetry in TbTe 3 revealed by ultrafast reflectivity under anisotropic strain

Here, we report ultrafast reflectivity measurements of the dynamics of the order parameter of the charge density wave (CDW) in TbTe 3 under anisotropic strain. We observe an increase in the frequency of the amplitude mode with increasing tensile strain along the a-axis (which drives the lattice into a > c, with a and c the lattice constants), and similar behavior for tensile strain along c (c > a). This suggests that both strains stabilize the corresponding CDW order and further support the near equivalence of the CDW phases oriented in a- and c-axis, in spite of the orthorhombic space group. The results were analyzed within the time-dependent Ginzburg–Landau framework, which agrees well with the reflectivity dynamics. Our study presents an ultrafast approach to assess the stability of phases and order parameter dynamics in strained systems.

Investigation of magnetic and electrical transport properties of YMB 4 (M = Cr, Fe, and Co) compounds

We have studied the structural, magnetic, and electrical transport properties of the YMB 4 series of compounds (M= Cr, Fe, and Co). These materials exhibit high stability and possess notable refractory and thermoelectric properties. Furthermore, recent theoretical predictions suggest that some of these compounds may display quantum magnetism and dimer formation among the magnetic ions. We have synthesized almost single phase YMB 4 compounds in the orthorhombic crystal structure (space group Pbam) using arc-melting and annealing. The Rietveld analysis of the room-temperature X-ray diffraction patterns reveals a clear change in the lattice parameter c, which correlates with the atomic radii of Cr, Fe, and Co. The temperature variation of resistivity measured between 2 K and 300 K reveals a metallic electron transport in all three YMB 4 compounds. However, no abrupt change in resistivity due to structural or magnetic phase transitions is observed. Additionally, a weak positive magnetoresistance of 1%–2% has been measured at 2.5 K, the contribution from the metallic impurity cannot be ruled out. The carrier concentration, on the order of 10 21 cm −3 , has been determined using conventional Hall measurements. The thermomagnetic curves recorded between 2 K and 350 K reveal the non-magnetic behavior of all these compounds. However, a small magnetic moment from paramagnetic/ferromagnetic impurity phases is detected at low temperatures. Above room temperature, no magnetic transition associated with the breaking of a dimer is observed.

Exploring few and single layer CrPS 4 with near-field infrared spectroscopy

Abstract We combine synchrotron-based near-field infrared spectroscopy and first principles lattice dynamics calculations to explore the vibrational response of CrPS 4 in bulk, few-, and single-layer form. Analysis of the mode pattern reveals a C 2 polar + chiral space group, no symmetry crossover as a function of layer number, and a series of non-monotonic frequency shifts in which modes with significant intralayer character harden on approach to the ultra-thin limit whereas those containing interlayer motion or more complicated displacement patterns soften and show inflection points or steps. This is different from MnPS 3 where phonons shift as 1/size 2 and are sensitive to the three-fold rotation about the metal center that drives the symmetry crossover. We discuss these differences as well as implications for properties such as electric polarization in terms of presence or absence of the P–P dimer and other aspects of local structure, sheet density, and size of the van der Waals gap.

Surface magnetism in Fe 3 GeTe 2 van der Waals ferromagnet

The surface magnetization of Fe 3 GeTe 2 was examined by low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM) using an off-normal incidence electron beam. We found that the 180o domain walls are of Bloch type. Temperature-dependent LEEM measurements yield a surface magnetization with a surface critical exponent β1 = 0.79±0.02. This result is consistent with surface magnetism in the 3D semi-infinite Heisenberg (β1 = 0.84±0.01) or Ising (β1 = 0.78±0.02) models, which is distinctly different from the bulk exponent (β = 0.34±0.07). Further, the measurements reveal the power of LEEM with a tilted beam to determine magnetic domain structure in quantum materials, without need for the use of spin-polarized electrons. Single crystal diffraction measurements reveal inversion symmetry-breaking weak peaks and yield space group P-6m2. This Fe site defect-derived loss of inversion symmetry enables the formation of skyrmions in this Fe 3 GeTe 2 crystal.
