High energy efficient solid state laser sources

Diode-laser-pumped solid-state laser oscillators and nonlinear processes were investigated. A new generation on nonplanar oscillator was fabricated, and it is anticipated that passive linewidths will be pushed to the kilohertz regime. A number of diode-pumped laser transitions were demonstrated in the rod configuration. Second-harmonic conversion efficiencies as high as 15% are routinely obtained in a servo-locked external resonant doubling crystal at 15 mW cw input power levels at 1064 nm.

Quantitative thermal diffusivity measurements of composites

A remote radiometric technique for making quantitative thermal diffusivity measurements is described. The technique was designed to make assessments of the structural integrity of large composite parts, such as wings, and can be performed at field sites. In the measurement technique, a CO2 laser beam is scanned using two orthogonal servo-controlled deflecting mirrors. An infrared imager, whose scanning mirrors oscillate in the vertical and the horizontal directions, is used as the detector. The analysis technique used to extract the diffusivity from these images is based on a thin infinite plate assumption, which requires waiting a given period of time for the temperature to equilibrate throughout the thickness of the sample. The technique is shown to be accurate to within two percent for values of the order of those for composite diffusivities, and to be insensitive to convection losses.

Nonlinear attitude control of elastic spacecraft-antenna system

An approach to large angle rotational maneuvers of a spacecraft-beam-tip body (an antenna or a reflector) configuration based on nonlinear invertibility and linear feedback stabilization is presented. A control law u sub d is derived to obtain independent decoupled control of attitude angles, lateral elastic deflections, slopes due to bending and angular deflection due to torsion at the tip of the beam using torquers and force actuators. For the stabilization of the elastic oscillations, a linear feedback control law, u sub s, is obtained based on a linearized model about the terminal state augmented with a servo-compensator. Simulation results obtained for single axis control, for simplicity, show that large slewing and elastic mode stabilization can be accomplished in spite of uncertainty in the system using the total control u = u sub d + u sub s.

A tunable, solid, Fabry-Perot etalon for solar seismology

A solid etalon has been designed and fabricated from a 50-mm diameter wafer of optical-quality lithium niobate. The finished etalon has a free spectral range of 0.325 nm at 588 nm. The parallel faces are coated with silver, and the central 15-mm aperture of the etalon has a finesse of 18.6. The reflective faces double as electrodes, and application of voltage will shift the passband. This feature was used in a servo circuit to stabilize the passband against temperature and tilt-induced drifts to better than three parts in one billion. Operated in the stabilized mode for day-long sessions, this filter alternately samples the wings of a narrow atomic absorption line in the solar spectrum and produces a signal proportional to velocity on the solar disk. The Fourier transform of this signal yields information on acoustic waves in the solar interior.

Searching Circuit For A Servoloop

Feedback error voltage forced into range of stability. Circuit connected in series with error-voltage line of feedback loop. When loop operates normally in stable region, searching circuit does not disturb operation, and error-voltage output of loop filter is control voltage. When servo unlocks and error-voltage output of loop filter wanders into unstable range, searching circuit forces control voltage to sweep through stable region repeatedly until lock recovered. Consists of two halves identical except polarities of some parts in each half opposite of corresponding parts in other half.

Three axis attitude control system

A three-axis attitude control system for an orbiting body comprised of a motor driven flywheel supported by a torque producing active magnetic bearing is described. Free rotation of the flywheel is provided about its central axis and together with limited angular torsional deflections of the flywheel about two orthogonal axes which are perpendicular to the central axis. The motor comprises an electronically commutated DC motor, while the magnetic bearing comprises a radially servoed permanent magnet biased magnetic bearing capable of producing cross-axis torques on the flywheel. Three body attitude sensors for pitch, yaw and roll generate respective command signals along three mutually orthogonal axes (x, y, z) which are coupled to circuit means for energizing a set of control coils for producing torques about two of the axes (x and y) and speed control of the flywheel about the third (z) axis. An energy recovery system, which is operative during motor deceleration, is also included which permits the use of a high-speed motor to perform effectively as a reactive wheel suspended in the magnetic bearing.

ARC length control for plasma welding

A control system to be used with a plasma arc welding apparatus is disclosed. The plasma arc welding apparatus includes a plasma arc power supply, a contactor, and an electrode assembly for moving the electrode relative to a work piece. The electrode assembly is raised or lowered by a drive motor. The present apparatus includes a plasma arc adapter connected across the power supply to measure the voltage across the plasma arc. The plasma arc adapter forms a dc output signal input to a differential amplifier. A second input is defined by an adjustable resistor connected to a dc voltage supply to permit operator control. The differential amplifier forms an output difference signal provided to an adder circuit. The adder circuit then connects with a power amplifier which forms the driving signal for the motor. In addition, the motor connects to a tachometor which forms a feedback signal delivered to the adder to provide damping, therby avoiding servo loop overshoot.

Fiber-linked interferometric pressure sensor

A fiber-optic pressure sensor is described which uses a diaphragm to modulate the mirror separation of a Fabry-Perot cavity (the sensing cavity). A multimode optical fiber delivers broadband light to the sensing cavity and returns the spectrally modulated light which the cavity reflects. The sensor's output spectrum is analyzed using a tunable Fabry-Perot cavity (the reference cavity) to determine the mismatch in the mirror separations of the two cavities. An electronic servo control uses this result to cause the mirror separation of the reference cavity to equal that of the sensing cavity. The displacement of the pressure-sensing diaphragm is then obtained by measuring the capacitance of the reference cavity's metal-coated mirrors. Relative to other fiber-optic sensors, an important advantage of this instrument is its high immunity to the effects of variations in both the transmissivity of the fiber link and the wavelength of the optical source.

Design of a force reflecting hand controller for space telemanipulation studies

The potential importance of space telemanipulator systems is reviewed, along with past studies of master-slave manipulation using a generalized force reflecting master arm. Problems concerning their dynamic interaction with the human operator have been revealed in the use of these systems, with marked differences between 1-g and simulated weightless conditions. A study is outlined to investigate the optimization of the man machine dynamics of master-slave manipulation, and a set of specifications is determined for the apparatus necessary to perform this investigation. This apparatus is a one degree of freedom force reflecting hand controller with closed loop servo control which enables it to simulate arbitrary dynamic properties to high bandwidth. Design of the complete system and its performance is discussed. Finally, the experimental adjustment of the hand controller dynamics for smooth manual control performance with good operator force perception is described, resulting in low inertia, viscously damped hand controller dynamics.

Adaptive proximate time-optimal servomechanisms - Continuous time case

A Proximate Time-Optimal Servo (PTOS) is developed, along with conditions for its stability. An algorithm is proposed for adapting the PTOS (APTOS) to improve performance in the face of uncertain plant parameters. Under ideal conditions APTOS is shown to be uniformly asymptotically stable. Simulation results demonstrate the predicted performance.

Decentralized adaptive control of robot manipulators with robust stabilization design

Due to geometric nonlinearities and complex dynamics, a decentralized technique for adaptive control for multilink robot arms is attractive. Lyapunov-function theory for stability analysis provides an approach to robust stabilization. Each joint of the arm is treated as a component subsystem. The adaptive controller is made locally stable with servo signals including proportional and integral gains. This results in the bound on the dynamical interactions with other subsystems. A nonlinear controller which stabilizes the system with uniform boundedness is used to improve the robustness properties of the overall system. As a result, the robot tracks the reference trajectories with convergence. This strategy makes computation simple and therefore facilitates real-time implementation.

Pulse-Population Modulation For Induction Machines

Low-frequency synthesizer developed to provide low-frequency waveform by synthesis from high-frequency power system. Waveform assembled by allowing conduction of discrete half cycles of high-frequency carrier. Frequency of synthesized wave controlled by pulse pattern. By controlling relationship between slip and stator frequencies, one operates induction motor either as motor or generator. Such bidirectional energy transducer used as starter/generator for engine, or as servo-mechanism for control of acceleration and deceleration. Other advantages include operation under controlled voltage-to-frequency ratios to maintain high-efficiency and high power factor, and no reflection of low-frequency noise into 20-kHz distribution bus.

A shared position/force control methodology for teleoperation

A flexible and computationally efficient shared position/force control concept and its implementation in the Robot Control C Library (RCCL) are presented form the point of teleoperation. This methodology enables certain degrees of freedom to be position-controlled through real time manual inputs and the remaining degrees of freedom to be force-controlled by computer. Functionally, it is a hybrid control scheme in that certain degrees of freedom are designated to be under position control, and the remaining degrees of freedom to be under force control. However, the methodology is also a shared control scheme because some degrees of freedom can be put under manual control and the other degrees of freedom put under computer control. Unlike other hybrid control schemes, which process position and force commands independently, this scheme provides a force control loop built on top of a position control inner loop. This feature minimizes the computational burden and increases disturbance rejection. A simple implementation is achieved partly because the joint control servos that are part of most robots can be used to provide the position control inner loop. Along with this control scheme, several menus were implemented for the convenience of the user. The implemented control scheme was successfully demonstrated for the tasks of hinged-panel opening and peg-in-hole insertion.

Control Of Flexible Structures-2 (COFS-2) flight control, structure and gimbal system interaction study

The second Control Of Flexible Structures Flight Experiment (COFS-2) includes a long mast as in the first flight experiment, but with the Langley 15-m hoop column antenna attached via a gimbal system to the top of the mast. The mast is to be mounted in the Space Shuttle cargo bay. The servo-driven gimbal system could be used to point the antenna relative to the mast. The dynamic interaction of the Shuttle Orbiter/COFS-2 system with the Orbiter on-orbit Flight Control System (FCS) and the gimbal pointing control system has been studied using analysis and simulation. The Orbiter pointing requirements have been assessed for their impact on allowable free drift time for COFS experiments. Three fixed antenna configurations were investigated. Also simulated was Orbiter attitude control behavior with active vernier jets during antenna slewing. The effect of experiment mast dampers was included. Control system stability and performance and loads on various portions of the COFS-2 structure were investigated. The study indicates possible undesirable interaction between the Orbiter FCS and the flexible, articulated COFS-2 mast/antenna system, even when restricted to vernier reaction jets.

Dynamic evaluation of a traction-drive joint for space telerobots

Presented is an analysis and evaluation of a prototype traction-drive joint for robotic manipulators, developed under NASA sponsorship. A dynamic model is developed using the Lagrange formulation. Controllability, observability, dynamic stability, and response characteristics of the joint to test inputs are studied. A linear quadratic regulator (LQR) is implemented on the joint model to determine a basis for evaluating the performance of the traction-drive joint under servo control. An evaluation of the results and directions for future investigations are presented.

An imaging vector magnetograph for the next solar maximum

Measurements of the vector magnetic field in the solar atmosphere with high spatial and temporal resolution over a large field of view are critical to understanding the nature and evolution of currents in active regions. Such measurements, when combined with the thermal and nonthermal X-ray images from the upcoming Solar-A mission, will reveal the large-scale relationship between these currents and sites of heating and particle acceleration in flaring coronal magnetic flux tubes. The conceptual design of an imaging vector magnetograph that combines a modest solar telescope with a rotating quarter-wave plate, an acousto-optical tunable prefilter as a blocker for a servo-controlled Fabry-Perot etalon, CCD cameras, and a rapid digital tape recorder are described. Its high spatial resolution (1/2 arcsec pixel size) over a large field of view (4 x 5 arcmin) will be sufficient to significantly measure, for the first time, the magnetic energy dissipated in major solar flares. Its millisecond tunability and wide spectra range (5000 to 8000 A) enable nearly simultaneous vector magnetic field measurements in the gas-pressure-dominated photosphere and magnetically dominated chromosphere, as well as effective co-alignment with Solar-A's X-ray images.

Model evaluation, recommendation and prioritizing of future work for the manipulator emulator testbed

The Manipulator Emulator Testbed (MET) is to provide a facility capable of hosting the simulation of various manipulator configurations to support concept studies, evaluation, and other engineering development activities. Specifically, the testbed is intended to support development of the Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS) and related systems. The objective of this study is to evaluate the math models developed for the MET simulation of a manipulator's rigid body dynamics and the servo systems for each of the driven manipulator joints. Specifically, the math models are examined with regard to their amenability to pipeline and parallel processing. Based on this evaluation and the project objectives, a set of prioritized recommendations are offered for future work.
