Abstract Biological evolution has led to precise and dynamic nanostructures that reconfigure in response to pH and other environmental conditions. However, designing micrometre-scale protein nanostructures that are environmentally responsive remains a challenge. Here we describe the de novo design of pH-responsive protein filaments built from subunits containing six or nine buried histidine residues that assemble into micrometre-scale, well-ordered fibres at neutral pH. The cryogenic electron microscopy structure of an optimized design is nearly identical to the computational design model for both the subunit internal geometry and the subunit packing into the fibre. Electron, fluorescent and atomic force microscopy characterization reveal a sharp and reversible transition from assembled to disassembled fibres over 0.3 pH units, and rapid fibre disassembly in less than 1 s following a drop in pH. The midpoint of the transition can be tuned by modulating buried histidine-containing hydrogen bond networks. Computational protein design thus provides a route to creating unbound nanomaterials that rapidly respond to small pH changes.

Compositionally graded electrospray deposition combined with grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering forms a high-throughput approach for mapping phase behavior in ternary mixtures as demonstrated here using block copolymer blends.
Shape complementarity between polymers is a hallmark of biological systems ( e.g. DNA base pairing and protein binding interactions). Here we explore the role of shape complementarity between sequence-defined N -alkyl peptoids in crystal lattices.

A new mononuclear iron(ii) SCO compound featuring H-bonding donor and acceptor units provides an entry to a purely supramolecular switchable {Fe 4 } tetrahedron that exhibits a singular magnetic behavior for each of the four Fe(ii) centers.
In this study, a gold surface is functionalized by chemisorption of the enantiopure N,N'-bis-[2,2';5',2"]tert-thiophene-5-yl methylcyclohexane-1,2-diamine (2T3N), a chiral oligothiophene derivative, via overnight incubation in a 2T3N ethanol solution. The Au|2T3N interface is characterized by x-ray photoelectron circular dichroism and comparing x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and electro-desorption results. Charge transmission at the Au|2T3N| solution interface is characterized by recording the cyclic voltammetry of the Fe(III)/Fe(II) reversible redox couple, finding a charge transfer rate constant, k°, variation from 1 × 10 -1 to 3.3 × 10 -2 cm s -1 , when comparing the bare Au and the Au|2T3N interfaces, respectively. The “anomalous” high value of k° found for the chiral Au|2T3N interface can be rationalized on the basis of the chiral-induced spin selectivity effect, as further proved by magnetic–conductive atomic force microscopy measurements at room temperature. A spin polarization of about 30% is found.
We report the synthesis and temperature-dependent morphologies of a series of polylactide--poly (-decalactone)--polylactide (LDL) triblock copolymers with M n = 16.0 – 18.1 kg / mol and volume fractions f L = 0.27 – 0.31 and associated core-shell bottlebrush (csBB) polymers, which derive from enchaining LDL triblocks through a polymerizable midchain functionality. While the LDL triblocks form micellar Frank-Kasper A15 and phases due to the conformational asymmetry of this monomer pair, the csBB morphologies sensitively depend on the backbone degree of polymerization ( N bb ). At low N bb values, micellar Frank-Kasper phases with the brush backbone situated in the matrix domain are stable, albeit with a modest reduction in the mean interfacial curvature evidenced by a to A15 order-to-order transition. However, larger N bb values drive csBBs to form hexagonally packed cylinders phases. This N bb -dependent phase behavior is rationalized in terms of a star-to-bottlebrush transition. At low N bb values, the csBBs are akin to star polymers with pointlike junctions that can support complex micelle packings. As N bb increases, the csBBs adopt cylindrical molecular geometries with extended backbones situated in the matrix domain that prefer hexagonally packed cylinders morphologies.
