Study of prompt $D^0$ meson production in $p$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{N}\;\mathrm{N}}}=5$ TeV

Production of prompt $D^0$ mesons is studied in proton-lead and lead-proton collisions recorded at the LHCb detector at the LHC. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.58±0.02 nb -1 recorded at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5 TeV. Measurements of the differential cross-section, the forward-backward production ratio and the nuclear modification factor are reported using $D^0$ candidates with transverse momenta less than 10 GeV/ c and rapidities in the ranges 1.5 < y* < 4.0 and -5.0 < y* < -2.5 in the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass system.

Inclusive J/ψ production at mid-rapidity in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV

Inclusive J/ψ production is studied in minimum-bias proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 5.02 TeV by ALICE at the CERN LHC. The measurement is performed at mid-rapidity (|y| < 0.9) in the dielectron decay channel down to zero transverse momentum p T , using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of L int = 19.4 ± 0.4 nb -1 . The measured p T -integrated inclusive J/ψ production cross sec- tion is dσ/dy = 5.64 ± 0.22(stat.) ± 0.33(syst.) ± 0.12(lumi.) μb. The p T -differential cross section d 2 σ/dp T dy is measured in the p T range 0–10 GeV/c and compared with state-of- the-art QCD calculations. The J/ψ &#12296pT&#12297 and &#12296B 2 T &#12297 are extracted and compared with results obtained at other collision energies.

Searches for low-mass dimuon resonances

Searches are performed for a low-mass dimuon resonance, X, produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.1 fb -1 and collected with the LHCb detector. The X bosons can either decay promptly or displaced from the proton-proton collision, where in both cases the requirements placed on the event and the assumptions made about the production mechanisms are kept as minimal as possible. The searches for promptly decaying X bosons explore the mass range from near the dimuon threshold up to 60 GeV, with nonnegligible X widths considered above 20 GeV. The searches for displaced $X → µ^+µ^-$ decays consider masses up to 3 GeV. None of the searches finds evidence for a signal and 90% confidence-level exclusion limits are placed on the $X → µ^+µ^-$ cross sections, each with minimal model dependence. In addition, these results are used to place world-leading constraints on GeV-scale bosons in the two-Higgs-doublet and hidden-valley scenarios.

Measurement of differential ZZ + jets production cross sections in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

Diboson production in association with jets is studied in the fully leptonic final states, pp → (Z/γ$^{*}$)(Z/γ$^{*}$) + jets → 2ℓ2ℓ′ + jets, (ℓ, ℓ′ = e or μ) in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$ collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. Differential distributions and normalized differential cross sections are measured as a function of jet multiplicity, transverse momentum p$_{T}$, pseudorapidity η, invariant mass and ∆η of the highest-p$_{T}$ and second-highest-p$_{T}$ jets, and as a function of invariant mass of the four-lepton system for events with various jet multiplicities. These differential cross sections are compared with theoretical predictions that mostly agree with the experimental data. However, in a few regions we observe discrepancies between the predicted and measured values. Further improvement of the predictions is required to describe the ZZ+jets production in the whole phase space.

Search for a heavy pseudoscalar Higgs boson decaying to a 125 GeV Higgs boson and a Z boson in final states with two tau and two light leptons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV

A search for a heavy pseudoscalar Higgs boson, A, decaying to a 125 GeV Higgs boson h and a Z boson is presented. The h boson is identified via its decay to a pair of tau leptons, while the Z boson is identified via its decay to a pair of electrons or muons. The search targets the production of the A boson via the gluon-gluon fusion process, gg → A, and in association with bottom quarks, $b\overline{b}A$. The analysis uses a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV. Constraints are set on the product of the cross sections of the A production mechanisms and the A → Zh decay branching fraction. The observed (expected) upper limit at 95% confidence level ranges from 0.049 (0.060) pb to 1.02 (0.79) pb for the gg → A process and from 0.053 (0.059) pb to 0.79 (0.61) pb for the $b\overline{b}A$ process in the probed range of the A boson mass, mA, from 225 GeV to 1 TeV. The results of the search are used to constrain parameters within the $M^{125}_{h,EFT}$ benchmark scenario of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model. Values of tan β below 2.2 are excluded in this scenario at 95% confidence level for all mA values in the range from 225 to 350 GeV.

Search for black holes and sphalerons in high-multiplicity final states in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV

A search in energetic, high-multiplicity final states for evidence of physics beyond the standard model, such as black holes, string balls, and electroweak sphalerons, is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the CMS experiment at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in 2016. Standard model backgrounds, dominated by multijet production, are determined from control regions in data without any reliance on simulation. No evidence for excesses above the predicted background is observed. Model-independent 95% confidence level upper limits on the cross section of beyond the standard model signals in these final states are set and further interpreted in terms of limits on semiclassical black hole, string ball, and sphaleron production. In the context of models with large extra dimensions, semiclassical black holes with minimum masses as high as 10.1 TeV and string balls with masses as high as 9.5 TeV are excluded by this search. Results of the first dedicated search for electroweak sphalerons are presented. An upper limit of 0.021 is set on the fraction of all quark-quark interactions above the nominal threshold energy of 9 TeV resulting in the sphaleron transition.

Searches for pair production of charginos and top squarks in final states with two oppositely charged leptons in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

A search for pair production of supersymmetric particles in events with two oppositely charged leptons (electrons or muons) and missing transverse momentum is reported. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV collected with the CMS detector during the 2016 data taking period at the LHC. No significant deviation is observed from the predicted standard model background. The results are interpreted in terms of several simplified models for chargino and top squark pair production, assuming R-parity conservation and with the neutralino as the lightest supersymmetric particle. When the chargino is assumed to undergo a cascade decay through sleptons, with a slepton mass equal to the average of the chargino and neutralino masses, exclusion limits at 95% confidence level are set on the masses of the chargino and neutralino up to 800 and 320 GeV, respectively. For top squark pair production, the search focuses on models with a small mass difference between the top squark and the lightest neutralino. When the top squark decays into an off-shell top quark and a neutralino, the limits extend up to 420 and 360 GeV for the top squark and neutralino masses, respectively.

Search for heavy resonances decaying into a vector boson and a Higgs boson in final states with charged leptons, neutrinos and b quarks at $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV

A search for heavy resonances, decaying into the standard model vector bosons and the standard model Higgs boson, is presented. The final states considered contain a b quark-antiquark pair from the decay of the Higgs boson, along with electrons and muons and missing transverse momentum, due to undetected neutrinos, from the decay of the vector bosons. The mass spectra are used to search for a localized excess consistent with a resonant particle. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{−1}$ collected in 2016 by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data are found to be consistent with background expectations. Exclusion limits are set in the context of spin-0 two Higgs doublet models, some of which include the presence of dark matter. In the spin-1 heavy vector triplet framework, mass-degenerate W′ and Z′ resonances with dominant couplings to the standard model gauge bosons are excluded below a mass of 2.9 TeV at 95% confidence level.

Search for the production of four top quarks in the single-lepton and opposite-sign dilepton final states in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for the standard model production of four top quarks (pp$\to\mathrm{t\overline{t}t\overline{t}}$) is reported using single-lepton plus jets and opposite-sign dilepton plus jets signatures. Proton-proton collisions are recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.8 fb$^{-1}$. A multivariate analysis exploiting global event and jet properties is used to discriminate $\mathrm{t\overline{t}t\overline{t}}$ from $\mathrm{t\overline{t}}$ production. No significant deviation is observed from the predicted background. An upper limit is set on the cross section for $\mathrm{t\overline{t}t\overline{t}}$ production in the standard model of 48 fb at 95% confidence level. When combined with a previous measurement by the CMS experiment from an analysis of other final states, the observed signal significance is 1.4 standard deviations, and the combined cross section measurement is 13$^{+11}_{-9}$ fb. The result is also interpreted in the framework of effective field theory.

Measurement of $J/ψ$ production cross-sections in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5 TeV

The production cross-sections of J/ψ mesons in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 5 TeV are measured using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.13 ± 0.18 pb -1 , collected by the LHCb experiment. The cross-sections are measured differentially as a function of transverse momentum, p T , and rapidity, y, and separately for J/ψ mesons produced promptly and from beauty hadron decays (nonprompt). With the assumption of unpolarised J/ψ mesons, the production cross-sections integrated over the kinematic range 0 < p T < 20 GeV/c and 2.0 < y < 4.5 are σ prompt J/Ψ = 8.154 ± 0.010 ± 0.283 μb, σnonprompt J/Ψ = 0.820 ± 0.003 ± 0.034 μb, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These cross-sections are compared with those at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV and 13 TeV, and are used to update the measurement of the nuclear modification factor in proton-lead collisions for J/ψ mesons at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5 TeV. The results are compared with theoretical predictions.

Search for supersymmetry in events with at least one photon, missing transverse momentum, and large transverse event activity in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV

A search for physics beyond the standard model in final states with at least one photon, large transverse momentum imbalance, and large total transverse event activity is presented. Such topologies can be produced in gauge-mediated supersymmetry models in which pair-produced gluinos or squarks decay to photons and gravitinos via short-lived neutralinos. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{−1}$ of proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016. No significant excess of events above the expected standard model background is observed. The data are interpreted in simplified models of gluino and squark pair production, in which gluinos or squarks decay via neutralinos to photons. Gluino masses of up to 1.50-2.00 TeV and squark masses up to 1.30-1.65 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, depending on the neutralino mass and branching fraction.

Strong constraints on the b → sγ photon polarisation from B0 → K*0e+e-decays

An angular analysis of the B 0 → K* 0 e + e - decay is performed using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb - 1 of pp collisions collected with the LHCb experiment. The analysis is conducted in the very low dielectron mass squared ( q 2 ) interval between 0 . 0008 and 0 . 257 GeV 2 , where the rate is dominated by the B 0 → K * 0 γ transition with a virtual photon. The fraction of longitudinal polarisation of the K * 0 meson, F L , is measured to be F L = (4 . 4 ± 2 . 6 ± 1 . 4)%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The \( {A}_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathrm{Re}} \) observable, which is related to the lepton forward-backward asymmetry, is measured to be \( {A}_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathrm{Re}} \) = - 0 . 06 ± 0 . 08 ± 0 . 02. The \( {A}_{\mathrm{T}}^{(2)} \) and \( {A}_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathrm{Im}} \) transverse asymmetries, which are sensitive to the virtual photon polarisation, are found to be \( {A}_{\mathrm{T}}^{(2)} \) = 0 . 11 ± 0 . 10 ± 0 . 02 and \( {A}_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathrm{Im}} \) = 0 . 02 ± 0 . 10 ± 0 . 01. The results are consistent with Standard Model predictions and provide the world’s best constraint on the b → sγ photon polarisation.

Inclusive search for highly boosted Higgs bosons decaying to bottom quark-antiquark pairs in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV

A search for standard model Higgs bosons (H) produced with transverse momentum (p$_{T}$) greater than 450 GeV and decaying to bottom quark-antiquark pairs ($ \mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}} $) is performed using proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb$^{−1}$. The search is inclusive in the Higgs boson production mode. Highly Lorentz-boosted Higgs bosons decaying to $ \mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}} $ are reconstructed as single large-radius jets, and are identified using jet substructure and a dedicated b tagging technique based on a deep neural network. The method is validated with Z →$ \mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}} $ decays. For a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV, an excess of events above the background assuming no Higgs boson production is observed with a local significance of 2.5 standard deviations (σ), while the expectation is 0.7. The corresponding signal strength and local significance with respect to the standard model expectation are μ$_{H}$ = 3.7 ± 1.2(stat)$ {}_{-0.7}^{+0.8} $(syst)$ {}_{-0.5}^{+0.8} $(theo) and 1.9 σ. Additionally, an unfolded differential cross section as a function of Higgs boson p$_{T}$ for the gluon fusion production mode is presented, assuming the other production modes occur at the expected rates.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Probing effective field theory operators in the associated production of top quarks with a Z boson in multilepton final states at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for new top quark interactions is performed within the framework of an effective field theory using the associated production of either one or two top quarks with a Z boson in multilepton final states. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 of proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Five dimension-six operators modifying the electroweak interactions of the top quark are considered. Novel machine-learning techniques are used to enhance the sensitivity to effects arising from these operators. Distributions used for the signal extraction are parameterized in terms of Wilson coefficients describing the interaction strengths of the operators. All five Wilson coefficients are simultaneously fit to data and 95% confidence level intervals are computed. All results are consistent with the SM expectations.

Partial wave analysis of the charmed baryon hadronic decay $ {\Lambda}_c^{+} $ → Λ π +π 0

Based on e + e - collision samples corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4 fb -1 collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4.6 GeV and 4.7 GeV, a partial wave analysis of the charmed baryon hadronic decay ${\Lambda}_c^{+}$ → Λπ + π 0 is performed, and the decays ${\Lambda}_c^{+}$ → Λρ(770) + and ${\Lambda}_c^{+}$ → Σ(1385)π are studied for the first time. Making use of the world-average branching fraction $\mathcal{B}$ (${\Lambda}_c^{+}$ → Λπ + π 0 ), their branching fractions are determined to be $\mathcal{B}$(${\Lambda}_c^{+}$ → Λρ(770) + ) = (4.06 ± 0.30 ± 0.35 ± 0.23) x 10 -2 , $\mathcal{B}$(${\Lambda}_c^{+}$ → Σ(1385) + )π 0 ) = (5.86 ± 0.49 ± 0.52 ± 0.35) x 10 -3 , $\mathcal{B}$(${\Lambda}_c^{+}$ → Σ(1385) 0 )π + ) = (6.47 ± 0.59 ± 0.66 ± 0.38) x 10 -3 , where the first uncertainties are statistical, the second are systematic, and the third are from the uncertainties of the branching fractions $\mathcal{B}$ ${\Lambda}_c^{+}$ → Λπ + π 0 and $\mathcal{B}$(Σ(1385) → Λπ). In addition, the decay asymmetry parameters are measured to be αΛρ(770)+ = - 0.763 ± 0.053 ± 0.045, $\alpha$ Σ(1385)+π 0 = -0.917 ± 0.069 ± 0.056, and $\alpha$ Σ(1385) 0 π + = -0.789 ± 0.098 ± 0.056.

In-Situ SEM High Strain Rate Testing of Large Diameter Micropillars Followed by TEM and EBSD Postmortem Analysis

Background Dislocation dynamic simulations are intended as a tool to understand and predict the mechanical behavior of metallic materials, but its prediction has never been directly verified by experiments due to differences in specimen strain rate and size. Objective In this work, a comprehensive experimental framework is proposed to attempt direct comparison between experiments and discrete dislocation dynamics (DDD) modelling. Methods By integrating high-throughput sample fabrication and a customized testing apparatus, the sample size and strain rate typically employed in DDD simulations are explored experimentally. Constitutive properties such as stress-strain response are measured, and microstructural information is obtained from transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging, electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), and TEM-based orientation mapping. Results Magnesium and copper were selected, as case studies, to demonstrate the newly developed experimental procedure. Measured stress-strain responses for Mg are consistent with those obtained with a miniaturized Hopkison bar experiments. Furthermore, by exploiting the validated workflow, the effect of strain rate on micropillar heterogeneous deformation and associated dislocation plasticity were revealed. Conclusion The work establishes a methodology for the systematic study of not only metals but also other materials and structures at the microscale and high strain rates.

Search for new phenomena in final states with two opposite-charge, same-flavor leptons, jets, and missing transverse momentum in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV

Search results are presented for physics beyond the standard model in final states with two opposite-charge, same-flavor leptons, jets, and missing transverse momentum. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{−1}$ of proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016. The analysis uses the invariant mass of the lepton pair, searching for a kinematic edge or a resonant-like excess compatible with the Z boson mass. The search for a kinematic edge targets production of particles sensitive to the strong force, while the resonance search targets both strongly and electroweakly produced new physics. The observed yields are consistent with the expectations from the standard model, and the results are interpreted in the context of simplified models of supersymmetry. In a gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking (GMSB) model of gluino pair production with decay chains including Z bosons, gluino masses up to 1500–1770 GeV are excluded at the 95% confidence level depending on the lightest neutralino mass. In a model of electroweak chargino-neutralino production, chargino masses as high as 610 GeV are excluded when the lightest neutralino is massless. In GMSB models of electroweak neutralino-neutralino production, neutralino masses up to 500-650 GeV are excluded depending on the decay mode assumed. Finally, in a model with bottom squark pair production and decay chains resulting in a kinematic edge in the dilepton invariant mass distribution, bottom squark masses up to 980–1200 GeV are excluded depending on the mass of the next-to-lightest neutralino.

Generative AI models for learning flow maps of stochastic dynamical systems in bounded domains

Simulating stochastic differential equations (SDEs) in bounded domains, presents significant computational challenges due to particle exit phenomena, which requires accurate modeling of interior stochastic dynamics and boundary interactions. Despite the success of machine learning-based methods in learning SDEs, existing learning methods are not applicable to SDEs in bounded domains because they cannot accurately capture the particle exit dynamics. We present a unified hybrid data-driven approach that combines a conditional diffusion model with an exit prediction neural network to capture both interior stochastic dynamics and boundary exit phenomena. Our ML model consists of two major components: a neural network that learns exit probabilities using binary cross-entropy loss with rigorous convergence guarantees, and a training-free diffusion model that generates state transitions for non-exiting particles using closed-form score functions. The two components are integrated through a probabilistic sampling algorithm that determines particle exit at each time step and generates appropriate state transitions. Here, the performance of the proposed approach is demonstrated via three test cases: a one-dimensional simplified problem for theoretical verification, a two-dimensional advection-diffusion problem in a bounded domain, and a three-dimensional problem of interest to magnetically confined fusion plasmas.
