X-rays from radio pulsars - The portable supernova remnants

Neutron stars are the longest-lived remnants of supernova explosions. As a reservoir of thermal energy remaining from the explosion and generated by frictional coupling between core and crust, as a storehouse of magnetic and rotational kinetic energy which allows the star to act as a high energy particle accelerator, and as the source of a deep gravitational potential which can generate heat from infalling matter, neutron stars remain capable of producing high energy radiation for a Hubble time. The results of an extensive survey of supernova remnants and radio pulsars performed with the imaging instruments on board the Einstein Observatory are reviewed and the implications of these results for pulsar physics and for the origin and evolution of galactic neutron stars are discussed.

Portable pallet weighing apparatus

An assembly for use with several like units in weighing the mass of a loaded cargo pallet supported by its trunnions has a bridge frame for positioning the assembly on a transportation frame carrying the pallet while straddling one trunnion of the pallet and its trunnion lock, and a cradle assembly for incrementally raising the trunnion. The mass at the trunnion is carried as a static load by a slidable bracket mounted upon the bridge frame for supporting the cradle assembly. The bracket applies the static loading to an electrical load cell symmetrically positioned between the bridge frame and the bracket. The static loading compresses the load cell, causing a slight deformation and a potential difference at load cell terminals which is proportional in amplitude to the mass of the pallet at the trunnion.

Portable Hydraulic Powerpack

Rechargeable hydraulic powerpack functions as lightweight, compact source of mechanical energy. Self-contained hydraulic powerpack derives energy from solid chemical charge. Combustion of charge initiated by small hammer, and revolving feeder replaces charges expended. Combustion gases cool during expansion in turbine and not too hot for release to atmosphere. Unit has applications driving wheelchairs and operating drills, winches, and other equipment in remote areas. Also replaces electric motors and internal-combustion engines as source of power in explosive atmospheres.

Portable 90 degree proof loading device

A hydraulically actuated device is described for applying a test load to a bearing or the like to prove the integrity of its mounting or staking within a bore in a housing such as gear case. To accommodate limited access situations, the device is constructed in a right angle configuration in which a hydraulic cylinder applies axial pressure to a first thrust rod assemly which includes a first thrust rod through a threated spindle driving a linearly translated cam. Cam follower wheel transfers the translation to a second thrust rod assembly which includes a horizontal shaft and a spindle within a cross-arm housing portion and a tubular housing portion. The same second thrust direction applies the bearing loading in either of two directions depending upon the shape of the interface parts. The interface parts can bear on the bearing from either side with respect to the bearing mounting structural part.

The force on the flex: Global parallelism and portability

A parallel programming methodology, called the force, supports the construction of programs to be executed in parallel by an unspecified, but potentially large, number of processes. The methodology was originally developed on a pipelined, shared memory multiprocessor, the Denelcor HEP, and embodies the primitive operations of the force in a set of macros which expand into multiprocessor Fortran code. A small set of primitives is sufficient to write large parallel programs, and the system has been used to produce 10,000 line programs in computational fluid dynamics. The level of complexity of the force primitives is intermediate. It is high enough to mask detailed architectural differences between multiprocessors but low enough to give the user control over performance. The system is being ported to a medium scale multiprocessor, the Flex/32, which is a 20 processor system with a mixture of shared and local memory. Memory organization and the type of processor synchronization supported by the hardware on the two machines lead to some differences in efficient implementations of the force primitives, but the user interface remains the same. An initial implementation was done by retargeting the macros to Flexible Computer Corporation's ConCurrent C language. Subsequently, the macros were caused to directly produce the system calls which form the basis for ConCurrent C. The implementation of the Fortran based system is in step with Flexible Computer Corporations's implementation of a Fortran system in the parallel environment.

Portable, Controlled-Load-Rate Tension Tester

Tensile-testing machine for ceramic and foam materials has selfcontained air supply with built-in airflow controller. New machine easily moved to point of use, and loads applied automatically at constant rate of increase, without fluctuations caused by manual control of supply pressure. Eliminates impact after failure of specimen so it does not damage itself. Potential applications of machine include tensile tests of large composite parts that contain localized defects and adhesion tests of virtually any bonded structure.

Development of a menu of performance tests self-administered on a portable microcomputer

Eighteen cognitive, motor, and information processing performance subtests were screened for self-administration over 10 trials by 16 subjects. When altered presentation forms of the same test were collectively considered, the battery composition was reduced to 10 distinctly different measures. A fully automated microbased testing system was employed in presenting the battery of subtests. Successful self-administration of the battery provided for the field testing of the automated system and facilitated convenient data collection. Total test administration time was 47.2 minutes for each session. Results indicated that nine of the tests stabilized, but for a short battery of tests only five are recommended for use in repeated-measures research. The five recommended tests include: the Tapping series, Number Comparison, Short-term Memory, Grammatical Reasoning, and 4-Choice Reaction Time. These tests can be expected to reveal three factors: (1) cognition, (2) processing quickness, and (3) motor. All the tests stabilized in 24 minutes, or approximately two 12-minute sessions.

Radiometric calibrations of portable sources in the vacuum ultraviolet

The primary UV radiometric calibration standards of the Atomic and Plasma Radiation Division of the NBS are the hydrogen arc and the blackbody line arc. The secondary standards are the argon mini- and maxiarcs, and the deuterium arc lamp. Calibration methods involving both spectral radiance and irradiance, as well as the evaluation of their uncertainties, are discussed. Attention is given to the establishment of an irradiance scale, and the absolute spectral irradiance, measured as a function of wavelength, at a 50-cm distance from the field aperture for five different continuum sources.

The FORCE: A portable parallel programming language supporting computational structural mechanics

This project supports the conversion of codes in Computational Structural Mechanics (CSM) to a parallel form which will efficiently exploit the computational power available from multiprocessors. The work is a part of a comprehensive, FORTRAN-based system to form a basis for a parallel version of the NICE/SPAR combination which will form the CSM Testbed. The software is macro-based and rests on the force methodology developed by the principal investigator in connection with an early scientific multiprocessor. Machine independence is an important characteristic of the system so that retargeting it to the Flex/32, or any other multiprocessor on which NICE/SPAR might be imnplemented, is well supported. The principal investigator has experience in producing parallel software for both full and sparse systems of linear equations using the force macros. Other researchers have used the Force in finite element programs. It has been possible to rapidly develop software which performs at maximum efficiency on a multiprocessor. The inherent machine independence of the system also means that the parallelization will not be limited to a specific multiprocessor.
