Flame-resistant thin panels of glass fabric-polyimide resin laminates

With a cured polyimide resin content of less than about 20 percent by weight of the finished part, glass fabric laminates which have good structural properties and are self-extinguishing in a pure oxygen atmosphere can be prepared in the thickness range of 0.035 to 0.08 inch.

High-temperature, long-life polyimide seals for hydraulic actuator rods

Two types of polyimide seals are developed for hydraulic actuator rod in low pressure second stage of two-stage configuration. Each seal melts test objectives of twenty million cycles of operation at 534 K. Analytical and experimental study results are discussed. Potential applications are given.

Low-void polyimide resins for autoclave processing

Development of an advanced A-type polyimide, which can be used to produce autoclave molded, low-void content composites suitable for use at temperatures up to 316 C is reported. It consists of a mixture of methyl nadic anhydride, an 80:20 molar ratio of methylene dianaline and thiodianilene, and pyromellitic dianhydride.

Time and temperature dependent modulus of pyrrone and polyimide moldings

A method is presented by which the modulus obtained from a stress relaxation test can be used to estimate the modulus which would be obtained from a sonic vibration test. The method was applied to stress relaxation, sonic vibration, and high speed stress-strain data which was obtained on a flexible epoxy. The modulus as measured by the three test methods was identical for identical test times, and a change of test temperature was equivalent to a shift in the logarithmic time scale. An estimate was then made of the dynamic modulus of moldings of two Pyrrones and two polyimides, using stress relaxation data and the method of analysis which was developed for the epoxy. Over the common temperature range (350 to 500 K) in which data from both types of tests were available, the estimated dynamic modulus value differed by only a few percent from the measured value. As a result, it is concluded that, over the 500 to 700 K temperature range, the estimated dynamic modulus values are accurate.

Graphite fluoride as a solid lubricant in a polyimide binder

Polyimide resin (PI) was shown to be a suitable binder material for the solid lubricant graphite fluoride, (CF(1.1))n. Comparisons were made to similar tests using PI-bonded MOS2 films, graphite fluoride rubbed films, and MOS2 rubbed films. The results showed that, at any one specific temperature between 25 and 400 C, the wear life of PI-bonded graphite fluoride films exceeded those of the other three films by at least a factor of 2 and by as much as a factor of 60. Minimum friction coefficients for the PI-bonded films were 0.08 for graphite fluoride and 0.04 for MOS2. The rider wear rates for the two PI-bonded films at 25 C were nearly equal.
