BLOB: An unsupervised clustering approach to spatial preprocessing of MSS imagery

A basic concept of Multispectral Scanner data processing was developed for use in agricultural inventories; namely, to introduce spatial coordinates of each pixel into the vector description of the pixel and to use this information along with the spectral channel values in a conventional unsupervised clustering of the scene. The result is to isolate spectrally homogeneous field-like patches (called blobs). The spectral mean vector of a blob can be regarded as a defined feature and used in a conventional pattern recognition procedure. The benefits of use are: ease in locating training units in imagery; data compression of from 10 to 30 depending on the application; reduction of scanner noise and consequently potential improvements in classification/proportion estimation performances.

Feed System Design Considerations for Large Space Antenna Systems. Part 2: Single Aperture with Overlapping Feeds

Contiguous multiple beams are used to make use of the set of frequency bands at different beams at different geographical locations and achieve the most efficient use of precious frequency allocation. This is feasible only if the interference among cochannel beams is below some acceptable level, by carrier/interference (C/I) ratio. Individual beam patterns of very low sidelobes, which in turn necessitates narrow feed are required. A physically realizable solution to this problem entails either more than one reflector, more complicated optics, or breaking of each feed into a cluster of smaller elements, some of which would then be shared by adjacent beams. The latter, however, requires a complicated beamforming network (BFN) for the proper feeding of the elements. The feedpacking problem is not unique to reflector antennas and exists in lens type antennas as well. The BFN and associated problems are present in the phased array antennas and on a much larger scale. Poor scan capabilities are associated with reflector systems. The scan properties of offset fed reflector systems can be improved by choosing a very large focal length to parent reflector diameter ((F/Dp) ratio, which requires a longer boom to support the feed. In the case of reflectors with cluster feed arrangements, the scan capability for smaller F/Dp ratios is improved by proper adjustment of cluster element excitations. Such a system seems to be appropriate for up to 10 beamwidths scan. For a larger number of beams, systems with wider scan capabilities, such as phased arrays or phased array/reflector combinations, become more appealing.

Atomic-scale probing of short-range order and its impact on electrochemical properties in cation-disordered oxide cathodes

Abstract Chemical short-range-order has been widely noticed to dictate the electrochemical properties of Li-excess cation-disordered rocksalt oxides, a class of cathode based on earth abundant elements for next-generation high-energy-density batteries. Existence of short-range-order is normally evidenced by a diffused intensity pattern in reciprocal space, however, derivation of local atomic arrangements of short-range-order in real space is hardly possible. Here, by a combination of aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction, and cluster-expansion Monte Carlo simulations, we reveal the short-range-order is a convolution of three basic types: tetrahedron, octahedron, and cube. We discover that short-range-order directly correlates with Li percolation channels, which correspondingly affects Li transport behavior. We further demonstrate that short-range-order can be effectively manipulated by anion doping or post-synthesis thermal treatment, creating new avenues for tailoring the electrochemical properties. Our results provide fundamental insights for decoding the complex relationship between local chemical ordering and properties of crystalline compounds.

CNO abundances in the quintuplet cluster M supergiant 5-7

We present and analyze infrared spectra of the supergiant VR 5-7, in the Quintuplet cluster 30 pc from the Galactic center. Within the uncertainties, the [C/H],[N/H], and [O/H] abundances in this star are equal of Ori, a star which exhibits mixing of CNO processed elements, but distinct from the abundance patterns in IRS 7.

Current Structure and Nonideal Behavior at Magnetic Null Points in the Turbulent Magnetosheath

The Poincaré index indicates that the Cluster spacecraft tetrahedron entraps a number of 3-D magnetic nulls during an encounter with the turbulent magnetosheath. Previous researchers have found evidence for reconnection at one of the many filamentary current layers observed by Cluster in this region. We find that many of the entrained nulls are also associated with strong currents. We dissect the current structure of a pair of spiral nulls that may be topologically connected. At both nulls, we find a strong current along the spine, accompanied by a somewhat more modest current perpendicular to the spine that tilts the fan toward the axis of the spine. The current along the fan is comparable to the that along the spine. At least one of the nulls manifests a rotational flow pattern in the fan plane that is consistent with torsional spine reconnection as predicted by theory. These results emphasize the importance of examining the magnetic topology in interpreting the nature of currents and reconnection in 3-D turbulence.

Dual Channel Dual Staging: Hierarchical and Portable Staging for GPU-Based In-Situ Workflow

In-situ workflows have emerged as an attractive approach for addressing data movement challenges at very large scales. Since GPU-based architectures dominate the HPC landscapes, porting these in-situ workflows, and, specifically, the inter-application data exchange, to GPU-based systems can be challenging. Technologies such as GPUDirect RDMA (GDR), which is typically used for I/O in GPU applications as an optimization that circumvents the CPU overhead, can be leveraged to support bulk data exchanges between GPU applications. However, current GDR design often lacks performance portability across HPC clusters built with different hardware configurations. Furthermore, the local CPU may also be effectively used as an auxiliary communication mechanism to offload data exchanges. In this paper, we present a dual channel dual staging approach for efficient, scalable, and performance-portable inter-application data exchange for in-situ workflows. This approach exploits the data access pattern within in-situ workflows along with the inherent execution asynchrony to accelerate data exchanges and, at the same time, improve performance portability. Specifically, the dual channel dual staging method leverages both the local CPU and the remote data staging server to build a hierarchical joint staging area and uses this staging area to transform blocking inter-application bulk data exchanges into best-effort local data movements between GPU and CPU. The dual channel dual staging is implemented as a portability extension of the Dataspaces-GPU staging framework. We present an experimental evaluation of its performance, portability, and scalability using this implementation on three leadership GPU clusters. The evaluation results demonstrate that the dual channel dual staging method saves up to 75% in data-exchange time compared to host-based, GDR, and alternate portable designs, while maintaining scalability (up to 512 GPUs) and performance portability across the three platforms.

Single-cell RNA sequencing of batch Chlamydomonas cultures reveals heterogeneity in their diurnal cycle phase

The photosynthetic unicellular alga Chlamydomonas (Chlamydomonas reinhardtii) is a versatile reference for algal biology because of its ease of culture in the laboratory. Genomic and systems biology approaches have previously described transcriptome responses to environmental changes using bulk data, thus representing the average behavior from pools of cells. Here, we apply single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) to probe the heterogeneity of Chlamydomonas cell populations under three environments and in two genotypes differing by the presence of a cell wall. First, we determined that RNA can be extracted from single algal cells with or without a cell wall, offering the possibility to sample natural algal communities. Second, scRNA-seq successfully separated single cells into nonoverlapping cell clusters according to their growth conditions. Cells exposed to iron or nitrogen deficiency were easily distinguished despite a shared tendency to arrest photosynthesis and cell division to economize resources. Notably, these groups of cells not only recapitulated known patterns observed with bulk RNA-seq but also revealed their inherent heterogeneity. A substantial source of variation between cells originated from their endogenous diurnal phase, although cultures were grown in constant light. We exploited this result to show that circadian iron responses may be conserved from algae to land plants. We document experimentally that bulk RNA-seq data represent an average of typically hidden heterogeneity in the population.

Ab Initio Study of the Beryllium Isotopes 7 Be to 12 Be

We present a systematic ab initio study of the low-lying states in beryllium isotopes from 7 Be to 12 Be using nuclear lattice effective field theory with the N 3 ⁢LO interaction. Our calculations achieve good agreement with experimental data for energies, radii, and electromagnetic properties. We introduce a novel, model-independent method to quantify nuclear shapes, uncovering a distinct pattern in the interplay between positive and negative parity states across the isotopic chain. By combining Monte Carlo sampling of the many-body density operator with a novel nucleon-grouping algorithm, the prominent two-center cluster structures, the emergence of one-neutron halo, complex nuclear molecular dynamics such as 𝜋 orbital and 𝜎 orbital, emerge naturally.

Electronic surface reconstruction of TiO 2 nanocrystals revealed by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

The identification of lattice multiphases in TiO 2 nanocrystals is studied by high resolution transmission electron microscope and electron diffraction patterns. Based on the spectroscopic analysis using soft x-ray absorption and resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering, it is believed that the oxygen vacancies at the interface exhibit structural distortion of the TiO$^{8-}_6$ cluster around the defect site as for the multiphase lattice. We elucidate that the extra 3d electrons nearby induce the inelastic scattering features with the excitation energy dependence owing to different energy relaxation processes, a characteristic of the electron-phonon coupling or the nature of the electron-hole pair at the intermediate state. The manifold dd excitations driven by the strong interaction between Ti-3d and O-2p electrons are noticeably rich, coexisting on both Ti and O sites. Finally, this sophisticated experiment can advance the perspective of nanocomposite TiO 2 for various interactions of surface Ti 3+ in applications of future devices.

X-ray burst sources

Current knowledge of sources of X-ray bursts, defined as having rise times of less than a few seconds, durations of a few seconds to a few minutes and a generally regular recurrence pattern, is reviewed. An examination of the galactic distribution of X-ray burst sources, which has been confirmed by SAS-3 rotating modulation collimator observations, reveals that the burst sources are spread along the galactic equator and clustered near low galactic longitudes, unlike the distribution of globular clusters. At least four X-ray burst sources have been associated with steady X-ray sources based on positional coincidence, and it has been found that the X-ray bursts are less intense but harder than steady X-ray emission from these sources. Individual burst sources, including MXB1659-29, which has not been identified with a steady X-ray source, the source in NGC6624 which has been identified with 3U1820-30, MXB1837+05, associated with Ser X-1, three burst sources near the galactic center and the rapid burster MXB1730-335 are briefly discussed.

The emergence and transmission dynamics of HIV-1 CRF07_BC in Mainland China

A total of 1155 partial pol gene sequences of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 CRF07_BC were sampled between 1997 and 2015, spanning 13 provinces in Mainland China and risk groups [heterosexual, injecting drug users (IDU), and men who have sex with men (MSM)] to investigate the evolution, adaptation, spatiotemporal and risk group dynamics, migration patterns, and protein structure of HIV-1 CRF07_BC. Due to the unequal distribution of sequences across time, location, and risk group in the complete dataset (‘full1155’), subsampling methods were used. Maximum-likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic analysis as well as discrete trait analysis of geographical location and risk group were carried out. To study mutations of a cluster of HIV-1 CRF07_BC (CRF07-1), we performed a comparative analysis of this cluster to the other CRF07_BC sequences (‘backbone_295’) and mapped the mutations observed in the respective protein structure. Our findings showed that HIV-1 CRF07_BC most likely originated among IDU in Yunnan Province between October 1992 to July 1993 [95 per cent hightest posterior density (HPD): May 1989–August 1995] and that IDU in Yunnan Province and MSM in Guangdong Province likely served as the viral sources during the early and more recent spread in Mainland China. We also revealed that HIV-1 CRF07-1 has been spreading for roughly 20 years and continues to cause local transmission in Mainland China and worldwide. Overall, our study sheds light on the dynamics of HIV-1 CRF07_BC distribution patterns in Mainland China. Our research may also be useful in formulating public health policies aimed at controlling acquired immune deficiency syndrome in Mainland China and globally.

Assessing Machine Learning as a Tool to Explain Variance in Deployed Photovoltaic (PV) System Degradation

Degradation remains a large uncertainty in forecasting production for PV plants, creating significant risk for developers and financiers. This study aims to quantify the distribution and drivers of degradation across 10,000 PV systems deployed for distributed or utility generation by training a machine learning model to predict year-over-year degradation rates from metadata characteristics. A combination of K-Means clustering and random forest regressor were found to associate multiple metadata features as potential drivers of degradation, including module characteristics, system design, and climate features. From this, it is inferred that if machine learning is able to find complex patterns between metadata features and system performance loss, such methods can be employed to help developers and financiers make data-informed decisions when estimating long-term energy production forecasts in financial models.

Lattice model theory of the equation of state covering the gas, liquid, and solid phases

The three stable states of matter and the corresponding phase transitions were obtained with a single model. Patterned after Lennard-Jones and Devonshires's theory, a simple cubic lattice model containing two fcc sublattices (alpha and beta) is adopted. The interatomic potential is taken to be the Lennard-Jones (6-12) potential. Employing the cluster variation method, the Weiss and the pair approximations on the lattice gas failed to give the correct phase diagrams. Hybrid approximations were devised to describe the lattice term in the free energy. A lattice vibration term corresponding to a free volume correction is included semi-phenomenologically. The combinations of the lattice part and the free volume part yield the three states and the proper phase diagrams. To determine the coexistence regions, the equalities of the pressure and Gibbs free energy per molecule of the coexisting phases were utilized. The ordered branch of the free energy gives rise to the solid phase while the disordered branch yields the gas and liquid phases. It is observed that the triple point and the critical point quantities, the phase diagrams and the coexistence regions plotted are in good agreement with the experimental values and graphs for argon.

Advanced 30/20 GHz multiple beam antenna for future communications satellites

The technologies which will be implemented in advanced satellite communications systems being studied by NASA and the intended coverage scenarios are described. The systems will function at 30/20 GHz with 2.5 GHz bandwidth for the uplink and downlink. Subfrequencies will have 500 MHz bandwidth and operations will include TDMA modes. Sample scan patterns are presented for the centerminous U.S. The signals will be broadcast from a multibeam offset Cassegrain reflector antenna to obtain a low sidelobe, wide angle scan. Three contiguous low sidelobe beams will be generated with a diplex feed cluster and a 19 element scanning beam-forming network. The same technology will be used to double the capacity of current 14/12 GHz satellites.

Observations of 3C 273 with the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope

The observations of the quasar 3C 273 taken with the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph in 1991 February are presented here. We have included both the reduced raw data, and smoothed and deconvolved spectra. Also, a list of observed absorption lines is presented. The data comprise 11 spectra, including one low resolution and 10 medium resolution observations. The wavelength region covered ranged from about 1150 to 2820 A, but was not all inclusive. The procedures used to obtain and reduce the data, including corrections for fixed pattern noise, compensation for the effects of spherical aberration in the HST primary mirror, and objective detection of weak absorption lines, are described. We also have included a short discussion on the detection of galactic Ni II and Virgo cluster metal lines.

DFT-based mesoscopic interactions of N adatoms on Cu(100)

The first-principles density functional theory (DFT) method is used to directly calculate the interactions of N atoms of various configurations on Cu(100) surfaces. This allows us to derive a mesoscopic substratemediated interaction model. We find that, for these Cu(100)-supported two-dimensional N clusters, oscillating substrate-mediated interactions obtained from an elastic eigenvector approach including a mesoscopic interacting range (called the mesoscopic model) have reasonable agreement with the DFT results. The DFT periodic boundary conditions are properly mapped into the mesoscopic model. The model is used to analyze the energies of c(2×2) square islands independent of their sizes. Previous experimental studies have shown that, in the low coverage region, N atoms agglomerate to isolated square islands of about 5 nm × 5 nm in size with a c(2×2) structure. With increasing coverage, those islands form regular patterns but do not touch below about 0.4 monolayers. From previous experiments and calculations, the square island pattern shows significant elastic effects which are now confirmed.

Nanocrystalline Chalcopyrite Materials (CuInS2 and CuInSe2) via Low-Temperature Pyrolysis of Molecular Single-Source Precursors

Nanometer sized particles of the chalcopyrite compounds CuInS2 and CuInSe2 were synthesized by thermal decomposition of molecular single-source precursors (PPh3)2CuIn(SEt)4 and (PPh3)2CuIn(SePh)4, respectively, in the non-coordinating solvent dioctyl phthalate at temperatures between 200 and 300 C. The nanoparticles range in size from 3 - 30 nm and are aggregated to form roughly spherical clusters of about 500 nm in diameter. X-ray diffraction of the nanoparticle powders shows greatly broadened lines indicative of very small particle sizes, which is confirmed by TEM. Peaks present in the XRD can be indexed to reference patterns for the respective chalcopyrite compounds. Optical spectroscopy and elemental analysis by energy dispersive spectroscopy support the identification of the nanoparticles as chalcopyrites.
