SiLix-C Nanocomposites

For this Phase II project, Superior Graphite Co., in collaboration with the Georgia Institute of Technology and Streamline Nanotechnologies, Inc., developed, explored the properties of, and demonstrated the enhanced capabilities of novel nanostructured SiLix-C anodes. These anodes can retain high capacity at a rapid 2-hour discharge rate and at 0 C when used in Li-ion batteries. In Phase I, these advanced anode materials had specific capacity in excess of 1,000 mAh/g, minimal irreversible capacity losses, and stable performance for 20 cycles at C/1. The goals in Phase II were to develop and apply a variety of novel nanomaterials, fine-tune the properties of composite particles at the nanoscale, optimize the composition of the anodes, and select appropriate binder and electrolytes. In order to achieve a breakthrough in power characteristics of Li-ion batteries, the team developed new nanostructured SiLix-C anode materials to offer up to 1,200 mAh/g at C/2 at 0 C.

Ionizing Organic Compound Based Nanocomposites for Efficient Gamma-Ray Sensor

Thin film and nanocrystalline materials of oxides have been very attractive choice as low cost option for gamma-ray detection and have shown great promise. Our studies on pure oxide films indicated that thickness and microstructure have pronounced effect on sensitivity. Since the interaction of gamma-ray with composites involves all three interaction processes; photoelectric effect, Compton scattering, and pair production, composites containing ionic organics have better chance for enhancing sensitivity. In the composites of ionizing organics oxidation effect of unusual oxides changes much faster and hence increases the sensitivity of radiation. In this study, we have used nickel oxide and titanium oxide in ionic organics to develop composite materials for low energy gamma-ray sensing. We prepared composites containing ethylene carbonate and evaluated the effect of commercial Cs-137 radiation source by studying current-voltage relationship at several frequencies. Radiated samples showed higher resistivity compared to as prepared composites.

Broadband Characterization of Stress Induced Anisotropy in Nanocomposite Co74.6Fe2.7Mn2.7Nb4Si2B14

We report on the broadband characterization of Co74:6Fe2:7Mn2:7Nb4Si2B14 (at%) melt-spun, soft magnetic alloy ribbons after various secondary processing treatments. Ribbons were investigated in the as-cast (melt-spun) condition, after annealing under stress at 50 - 200 MPa, and after transverse magnetic field (TMF) annealing. The magnetization dynamics of these materials have been studied from 10 - 60 GHz using ferromagnetic resonance (FMR). The in-plane uniaxial anisotropy was determined from the FMR data and permeability extracted for each condition. The permeability determined from broadband FMR was in good agreement with independently determined values using vibrating sample magnetometry and impedance spectrometry of toroidal cores. The effective damping parameter (α (sub ϱff)) of all the samples was close to 0.015 except for the TMF sample, which showed higher damping, possibly due to two magnon scattering.
