Predictor-corrector procedures for thermal buckling analysis of multilayered composite plates

A study is made of two predictor-corrector procedures for the accurate determination of global, as well as detailed, thermal buckling response characteristics of composite plates. Both procedures use first-order shear deformation theory in the predictor phase, but differ in the elements of the computational model being adjusted in the corrector phase. The first procedure calculates a posteriori estimates of the composite correction factors and uses them to adjust the transverse shear stiffnesses of the plate. The second procedure calculates a posteriori the functional dependence of the displacement components on the thickness coordinate. The corrected quantities are then used in conjunction with three-dimensional equations to obtain better estimates for the different response quantities. Extensive numerical results are presented, showing the effects of variation in the geometric and lamination parameters for antisymmetrically laminated composite plates subjected to uniform temperature rise, on the accuracy of the thermal buckling response obtained by predictor-corrector procedures.

Fault characterization of a multilayered perceptron network

The results of a set of simulation experiments conducted to quantify the effects of faults in a classification network implemented as a three-layered perception model are reported. The percentage of vectors misclassified by the classification network, the time taken for the network to stabilize, and the output values are measured. The results show that both transient and permanent faults have a significant impact on the performance of the network. Transient faults are also found to cause the network to be increasingly unstable as the duration of a transient is increased. The average percentage of the vectors misclassified is about 25 percent; after relearning, this is reduced to 10 percent. The impact of link faults is relatively insignificant in comparison with node faults (1 percent versus 19 percent misclassified after relearning). A study of the impact of hardware redundancy shows a linear increase in misclassifications with increasing hardware size.

Wave propagation in a multilayered laminated cross-ply composite plate

Dispersion of guided waves in a cross-ply laminated plate has been studied here using a stiffness method and an exact method. It is shown that the number of laminae strongly influences the dispersion behavior. Further, it is found that when the number of laminae is sufficiently large, then the dispersion behavior can be predicted by treating the plate as homogeneous with six stiffness constants obtained by using an effective modulus method.

Ultrasonic characterization of multilayered thick composite plates

Guided wave propagation in a periodically laminated plate is considered when each lamina is transversely isotropic with its symmetry axis lying in the plane of the graphite-epoxy plate. The dispersion behavior of propagation modes influences the dynamic response and can be used to ultrasonically characterize the mechanical properties of the laminated plate. It is assumed that fibers are oriented at 90 deg to one another in adjacent layers and all the laminae are of equal thickness. Results obtained are in good agreement with exact solutions of previous studies.

Thermomechanical buckling and postbuckling of multilayered composite panels

A study is made of the thermomechanical buckling and postbuckling responses of flat unstiffened composite panels. The panels are subjected to combined temperature change and applied edge displacement. The analysis is based on a first-order shear deformation, von Karman type nonlinear plate theory. A mixed formulation is used with the fundamental unknowns consisting of the generalized displacements and the stress resultants of the plate. An efficient multiple-parameter reduction method is used in conjunction with mixed finite element models, for determining the stability boundary and postbuckling response. The reduction method is also used for evaluating the sensitivity coefficients which measure the sensitivity of the buckling and postbuckling responses to variations in the different lamination and material parameters of the panel. Numerical results are presented showing the effects of variations in the laminate stacking sequence, fiber orientation, number of layers and aspect ratio of the panels on their thermomechanical buckling and postbuckling responses and their sensitivity coefficients.

Postbuckling of multilayered composite plates subjected to combined axial and thermal loads

A study is made of the postbuckling response of composite plates subjected to combined axial and thermal loadings. The analysis is based on a first-order shear deformation, von Karman type of nonlinear plate theory. A mixed formulation is used with the fundamental unknowns consisting of the generalized displacements and the stress resultants of the plate. An efficient reduction method is used in conjunction with mixed finite element models for determining the stability boundary and the postbuckling response of the plate. Sensitivity derivatives are evaluated and used to study the sensitivity of the postbuckling response to variations in the different lamination and material parameters of the plate. For quasi-isotropic plates, numerical results are presented showing the effects of variations in the material characteristics and fiber orientation of individual layers on the postbuckling response of the plate.

Development Of Multilayer Metallic Mesh Low-Pass Infrared Filters

Prototype filters exhibit desired transmissivity vs. wavelength. Etched-metallic-film low-frequency-pass (long-wavelength-pass) filters with relatively sharp cut-on at wavelengths of 30 to 40 micrometers developed for use in infrared instruments. Filters particularly useful in observing astronomical bodies exhibiting wide temperature dynamic range. Reduction in signal dynamic range (due to temperature extremes) accomplished by blocking short-wavelength radiance by using low-pass metallic mesh filters.

Imaging performance of multilayer X-ray mirrors

We analyze soft X-ray images of the solar corona, obtained on the day of the solar eclipse in July 1991, and find that the deviations of our telescope mirror from the perfect surface are less than 1 A for spatial periods between 1 micron and 1 mm. Our thin film deposition technique allows us to reduce errors over larger periods to the 1 A level. Thus, we are able to produce larger (diameter over 20 cm) X-ray mirrors with diffraction limited resolution below 0.01 arcsec.

Thermomechanical buckling of multilayered composite panels with cutouts

A study is made of the thermomechanical buckling of flat unstiffened composite panels with central circular cutouts. The panels are subjected to combined temperature changes and applied edge loading (or edge displacements). The analysis is based on a first-order shear deformation plate theory. A mixed formulation is used with the fundamental unknowns consisting of the generalized displacements and the stress resultants of the plate. Both the stability boundary and the sensitivity coefficients are evaluated. The sensitivity coefficients measure the sensitivity of the buckling response to variations in the different lamination and material parameters of the panel. Numerical results are presented showing the effects of the variations in the hole diameter, laminate stacking sequence, fiber orientation, and aspect ratio of the panel on the thermomechanical buckling response and its sensitivity coefficients.

Extrapolation limitations of multilayer feedforward neural networks

The limitations of backpropagation used as a function extrapolator were investigated. Four common functions were used to investigate the network's extrapolation capability. The purpose of the experiment was to determine whether neural networks are capable of extrapolation and, if so, to determine the range for which networks can extrapolate. The authors show that neural networks cannot extrapolate and offer an explanation to support this result.

High-reflective multilayers as narrowband VUV filters

A novel coating has been developed for the 120-230 nm wavelength VUV region which yields significantly higher reflectivity over selectable bandwidths and can be used to fabricate high-performance narrowband reflection filters; the spectral properties of such filters are greatly enhanced through their use in tandem. The coating uses a combination of high and low refractive index dielectric pairs. The proper choice of high-low ratio reduces the effects of VUV absorption for high refractive index films whose extinction coefficient is much higher than for a low-index material.

Multilayer thin film design for far ultraviolet polarizers using an induced transmission and absorption technique

An explanation of induced transmission for spectral regions excluding the far ultraviolet (FUV) is given to better understand how induced transmission and absorption can be used to design effective polarizers in the FUV spectral region. We achieve high s-polarization reflectance and a high degree of polarization (P equals (Rs-Rp)/(Rs+Rp)) by means of a MgF2/Al/MgF2 three layer structure on an opaque thick film of Al as the substrate. For example, our polarizer designed for the Lyman-alpha line (lambda equals 121.6 nm) has 87.95 percent reflectance for the s-polarization case and 0.43 percent for the p-polarization case, with a degree of polarization of 99.03 percent. If a double reflection polarizer is made with this design, it will have a degree of polarization of 99.99 percent and s-polarization throughput of 77.35 percent.

Multilayer relaxation and surface structure of ordered alloys

Using BFS, a new semiempirical method for alloys, we study the surface structure of fcc ordered binary alloys in the Ll(sub 2) structure (Ni3Al and Cu3Au). We show that the surface energy is lowest for the mixed composition truncation of the low-index faces of such systems. Also, we present results for the interlayer relaxations for planes close to the surface, revealing different relaxations for atoms of different species producing a rippled surface layer.

Multilayer thin film Hall effect device

A Hall effect device and a method of obtaining a magnetic field map of a magnetic body with the Hall effect device are presented. The device comprises: (1) a substrate, (2) a first layer having a first Hall coefficient deposited over the substrate, and (3) a second layer having a second Hall coefficient deposited over the first layer, the first and second layers cooperating to create, in the Hall effect device, a third Hall coefficient different from the first and second Hall coefficients. Creation of the third Hall coefficient by cooperation of the first and second layers allows use of materials for the first and second layers that were previously unavailable for Hall effect devices due to their relatively weak Hall coefficient.

HZE beam transport in multilayered materials

A nonperturbative analytic solution of the high charge and energy (HZE) Green's function is used to implement a computer code for laboratory ion beam transport in multiple-layered materials. The code is established to operate on the Langley nuclear fragmentation model used in space engineering applications. Computational procedures are established to generate linear energy transfer (LET) distributions for a specified ion beam and target for comparison with experimental measurement. Comparison with Fe-56 ion with Pb-Al and Pb-(CH2)(x) targets shows reasonable agreement.

Finite element buckling and postbuckling solutions for multilayered composite panels

A study is made of the buckling and postbuckling responses of flat, unstiffened composite panels subjected to various combinations of mechanical and thermal loads. The analysis is based on a first-order shear deformation von Karman-type plate theory. A mixed formulation is used with the fundamental unknowns consisting of the strain components, stress resultants and the generalized displacements of the plate. The stability boundary, postbuckling response and the sensitivity coefficients are evaluated. The sensitivity coefficients measure the sensitivity of the buckling and postbuckling responses to variations in the different lamination and material parameters of the panel. Numerical results are presented for both solid panels and panels with central circular cutouts. The results show the effects of the variations in the fiber orientation angels, aspect ratio of the panel, and the hole diameter (for panels with cutouts) on the stability boundary, postbuckling response and sensitivity coefficients.

Thermomechanical postbuckling of multilayered composite panels with cutouts

The results of a study of the detailed thermomechanical postbuckling response characteristics of flat unstiffened composite panels with central circular cutouts are presented. The panels are subjected to combined temperature changes and applied edge loading (or edge displacements). The analysis is based on a first-order shear deformation plate theory. A mixed formulation is used with the fundamental unknowns consisting of the generalized displacements and the stress resultants of the plate. The postbuckling displacements, transverse shear stresses, transverse shear strain energy density, and their sensitivity coefficients are evaluated. The sensitivity coefficients measure the sensitivity of the post-buckling response to variations in the different lamination and material parameters of the panel. Numerical results are presented showing the effects of the variations in the hole diameter, laminate stacking sequence, fiber orientation, and aspect ratio of the panel on the thermomechanical postbuckling response and its sensitivity to changes in panel parameters.
