High Flux Isotope Reactor Neutron Spectrum Shape Estimation From Activation Experiment Data

Here, this article provides a comprehensive review of historical irradiation dosimetry available for different locations within the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). This article includes a summary of the available measured activation target data covering a span of over 15 years and 39 experimental campaigns, including 200 individual sample locations evaluated. Using this broad set of data, we reconstruct historic average neutron spectra shapes for HFIR at various locations, including within the flux trap region, beryllium reflectors, and hydraulic tube (HT) regions, at both the 100- and 85-MW operational power. Our findings indicate that the general axial flux distribution shows a relatively small change in transition from 100- to 85-MW operating power, with differences of -6% to +15% for the thermal energy range and around -16% to +8% for the fast range, indicating a sharper drop-off of the thermal neutron flux away from the axial center. Compared with historical dosimetry estimates of the HFIR flux shape, we generally find a moderately broader axial profile shape for thermal neutrons in the interior target regions for the 100-MW samples evaluated but relatively close agreement for the present 85-MW flux shape for both thermal and fast fluxes.

Surrogate Distributed Radiological Sources—Part II: Aerial Measurement Campaign

In this second part of a multipaper series, we present results from outdoor aerial measurements of surrogate distributed gamma-ray sources. Here we detail the design, manufacture, and testing of 300 individual ~7 mCi Cu-64 sealed sources at the Washington State University (WSU) research reactor and their deployment in various source patterns (each comprising up to 100 point sources) during the aerial measurement campaign. We show the results of two such measurements, in which approximate source shapes and qualitative source intensities can be seen from the count rate versus position plots, even without performing reconstructions. We also detail our efforts in ground-truthing the deployed sources and comparing measured gamma-ray data to model predictions. In particular, we compare measured versus expected count data using the Poisson deviance formalism of Part I to evaluate whether the fielded surrogate point-source arrays “look like” their truly continuous distributed source analogs. More generally, we find that the point-source array technique provides high source placement accuracy, relative ease of quantifying the true source configuration, scalability to source dimensions of ≲100 m, ease of reconfiguration and removal, and relatively low dose to personnel. Finally, we consider potential improvements and generalizations of the point-source array technique for future measurement campaigns.

Planar Transformer With Asymmetric Integrated Leakage Inductance Using Horizontal Air Gap

This article presents a novel planar-based transformer winding and core structure with controllable leakage inductance generation for integrated magnetics applications. As a result of limitations in integrated magnetics from the literature, a new approach is proposed utilizing semi-interleaved windings and controllable leakage via a leakage flux core leg featuring a horizontal air gap. Here, the proposed transformer design is analyzed via detailed reluctance modeling to determine closed-form equations for the magnetizing and asymmetrically distributed leakage inductances. Next, a genetic-algorithm-based multiobjective design optimization problem is developed, seeking to minimize the core and winding losses of the proposed transformer subject to a set of parametric and geometric constraints in a dc-ac dual-active-bridge topology for microinverter applications. The optimization was extended to include other integrated magnetic structures from the literature, where it is determined that the proposed transformer is superior from the perspectives of efficiency, footprint area, and parasitic capacitance. Based on the results of the optimization analysis, two designs with theoretical transformer California Energy Commission (CEC) efficiency drops (i.e., CEC efficiency reduction specifically due to the transformer loss mechanisms) of 1.19% and 0.83% were fabricated and evaluated for electrical and thermal performance in the proposed 40 V, 400 W microinverter.

A Prototype High-Voltage Pulsed Power Supply for Control of the ITER Shattered Pellet Injection System Flyer Plate Valve

A high-voltage pulsed power supply (HVPPS) has been designed, prototyped, and tested for driving an eddy current actuated propellant valve for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) disruption mitigation system. The high-voltage (HV) dc supply output voltage is software programmable, and the energy storage capacitor bank can be readily reconfigured as 200, 400, 600, and 800 μ F, enabling testing and optimization of both the valve drive and valve systems. Multiple system parameters are monitored before, during, and after each firing of the valve. The system parameters are both displayed and stored for further analysis. Control of the setup, firing sequence, and data collection is automated using a LabVIEW-based control program. The programmability and reconfigurability of this system collectively provide a flexible and robust platform for system refinement and optimization. In this article, a summary of the system will be provided including operational sequences, HV switching and associated triggering methods and circuits, and results measured while firing a solid frozen pellet. Additionally, planned refinement activities toward meeting all requirements for ITER integration will be discussed.

On a High-Mirror Stellarator Reactor Exploratory Concept With Neutrons Concentrated on Centrifuge Liquids

In the framework of fusion energy research based on magnetic confinement, stellarators allow numerous degrees of freedom for the design of the magnetic trap and plasma shape. Taking advantage of these features, some plasma shapes might benefit several of the many integrated elements involved in commercial fusion reactors, like, e.g., decreasing the number, mass and complexity of replaced activated in-vessel components (IVC) (i.e., by using liquids), extraction of large power, tritium generation, and remote maintenance. Certainly, free-surface liquid materials were proposed for tokamaks and field-reversed configuration (FRC) to try to improve some of such elements, i.e., in advanced power extraction (APEX) studies. Some reactor-relevant quasi-isodynamic (QI) magnetic configurations exhibit a relatively straight sector of plasma and high magnetic mirror. The combination of those elements and possibilities in a single stellarator reactor concept might have some advantages, in spite of the uncertainties due to the current low technological readiness level (TRL). The proposed and studied reactor concept is based on a vacuum vessel having short curved sectors and longer wide cylindrical sectors, which encloses a high-mirror low-vertical-excursion magnetic configuration, and swirling liquids or rotating cylinders, which centrifuge molten Li salts located at the low field region. Thus, the molten salts (if possible covered by a thin layer of liquid lithium) would be located on the internal perimeter of the cylinder, to act as particle exhaust (except for helium), neutron power extractor, and tritium breeder. The high-mirror feature tries to concentrate the neutron power at the cylindrical sectors, which might avoid using breeding materials at the curved sectors. The different elements of the concept are exploratorily studied and defined, and the difficulties assessed.

A Hybrid DC Fault Primary Protection Algorithm for Multi-Terminal HVdc Systems

Protection against dc faults is one of the main technical hurdles faced when operating converter-based HVdc systems. Protection becomes even more challenging for multi-terminal dc (MTdc) systems with more than two terminals/converter stations. In this paper, a hybrid primary fault detection algorithm for MTdc systems is proposed to detect a broad range of failures. Sensor measurements, i.e., line currents and dc reactor voltages measured at local terminals, are first processed by a top-level context clustering algorithm. For each cluster, the best fault detector is selected among a detector pool according to a rule resulting from a learning algorithm. The detector pool consists of several existing detection algorithms, each performing differently across fault scenarios. The proposed hybrid primary detection algorithm: i) offers superior performance compared to an individual detector through a data-driven approach; ii) detects all major fault types including pole-to-pole (P2P), pole-to-ground (P2G), and external dc faults; iii) identifies faults with various fault locations and impedances; iv) is more robust to noisy sensor measurements compared to existing methods; v) does not require exhaustive simulation and sampling for training the model. Performance and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm are evaluated and verified based on time-domain simulations in the PSCAD/EMTDC software environment. The results confirm satisfactory operation, accuracy, and detection speed of the proposed algorithm under various fault scenarios.

A look at the Soviet space nuclear power program

The Soviet Union has been flying nuclear power sources in space since about 1965. For the most part these nuclear power sources have been low-power nuclear reactors using a thermoelectric conversion principle. Recently the Soviet Union has flown two satellites using a higher power reactor that employs a thermionic conversion system. Reentry of two of the earlier reactors on board Cosmos 954 and Cosmos 1402 plus the recent potential accident involving Cosmos 1900 have focused world attention on Soviet usage of space nuclear power. Despite these problems the evidence points toward a continued Soviet usage of nuclear power sources in space.

Preliminary Stress-Annealing Process and its Effect on Magnetic Properties of Fe-based Soft Magnetic Alloys

Stress-annealing (SA) is a novel secondary processing technique capable of significantly increasing magnetic anisotropy and controlling magnetic permeability in planar-cast amorphous precursor ribbons. In this technical memorandum, measures taken to improve the mechanical handling of brittle Fe-based ribbons are described for a custom SA system. This system was then used to process a series of Fe-based alloys (Fe-2Nb-2Mo-1Cu-15.5Si-7B at.%, Fe-5Co-3Ta-1Cu-16Si-6.5B at.%, and Fe-5Co-3Ta-1Cu-16.5Si-6B at.%) and the resulting magnetic properties were determined. The Fe-5Co-3Ta-1Cu-16.5Si-6B at.% alloy was found to be the most promising composition of the three in terms of surviving an optimized spool-to-spool continuous SA process under 90 MPa of tensile stress at 650 °C using a feed rate of 75.5 in/min, which equated to approximately 10 second anneal time. These optimally annealed ribbons exhibited flat hysteresis loops with a saturation magnetization of nearly 1.2 T, low magnetic coercivity (≈ 2 A m-1), and relative permeability of approximately 500.

Modeling and Mitigation of dv/dt and Transmission Line Effect for Motor Drive System in Electric Aircraft Propulsion

Due to constraints in space and structure as well as other practical limitations in aircraft system, the motor controller or electric motor are often installed far away from each other and interconnected via long cables. This amplifies the transmission line effect excited by the dv/dt PWM voltage and induces high voltage stress on the machine winding. This paper investigates the state-of-art modeling approaches for such systems, identifies several limitations in matching the tested voltage reflection waveform in terms of peak voltage, oscillation frequency and damping speed, and offers several key considerations not well covered in literature or in engineering practice. It then proposes a practical modeling methodology which, as validated by experimental results, truly captures these critical reflection voltage specs. To mitigate the high peak voltage and strong oscillation, dv/dt filter is applied and a parametric design optimization based on widely adopted LC-R topology is illustrated, which not only alleviates the voltage stress but also minimized the power loss of the passive damping resistor.
