1:70-Scale Model Testing of the Reference OpenSource Controller (ROSCO) on the IEA-Wind 15MW Reference Wind Turbine Including Floating Feedback: Preprint

This paper presents results from the Floating Offshore-wind Controls Advanced Laboratory (FOCAL) Experimental campaign performed at the University of Maine's (UMaine's) Harold Alfond Wind/Wave Ocean Engineering Laboratory (W2). The project involves four Froude-scaled test campaigns considering the International Energy Agency (IEA) Wind 15MW Reference Wind Turbine deployed on the VolturnUS-S semi-submersible platform with tuned-mass damper (TMD) elements in the hull. The turbine employs real-time rotor torque and blade pitch control through the Reference OpenSource Controller (ROSCO), including the additional control strategies of ROSCO's thrust peak shaving and a floating feedback control loop. Results with the floating feedback control are considered in this paper and show a significant reduction in platform pitch motion and loads around the platform pitch natural frequency with minimal negative impact of rotor power quality.

A theoretical and experimental study of planing surfaces including effects of cross section and plan form

A summary is given of the background and present status of pure-planing theory. Data for models having sharp chines have been obtained for a rectangular flat plate and two V-bottom surfaces having constant angles of dead rise of 20 degrees and 40 degrees and also for rectangular-flat-plate surfaces having very slightly rounded chines. The theory presented in NACA Technical Note 3233 for a rectangular flat plate is revised and extended to include triangular flat plates planing with base forward and V-shaped prismatic surfaces having a constant angle of dead rise, horizontal chine flare, or vertical chine strips. The agreement between the results calculated by the proposed theory and the experimental data is satisfactory for engineering calculations of lift and center-of-pressure location.

In Situ Transmission Electron Microscopy of High-Temperature Inconel-625 Corrosion by Molten Chloride Salts

This paper describes an approach to monitor high temperature molten chloride (MgCl 2 -NaCl-KCl) salt corrosion of Inconel-625 alloy in real time at high spatial resolution. The approach is based on a micro-environmental-cell assembly integrated into a transmission-electron-microscope goniometer to examine in situ the salt-alloy interface during corrosion, employing real time electron diffraction and imaging. It establishes procedures to minimize incorporation of H 2 O or O 2 from atmosphere in the chloride salts during sample fabrication and corrosion, which is critical to understanding the fundamental corrosion mechanisms. A clustering algorithm and a 2D Gaussian fit function are used to determine diffraction spot intensities in in situ diffraction patterns, to quantify alloy corrosion. This facilitates quantitative observation of the evolution of individual grains, in contrast to conventional macroscopic corrosion rate quantification. The isothermal corrosion rate of Inconel-625 in an anhydrous, unoxidized salt-stack is 220 ± 30 μm year -1 at 700 °C and 350 ± 20 μm year -1 at 800 °C. However, the corrosion rate at 700 °C increases five-fold to 1000 ± 170 μm year -1 when the salt stack is air-exposed, indicating the dominant effects of hydrated or oxidized impurities on corrosion acceleration. Furthermore, real time imaging of the microstructure evolution suggests that corrosion is initiated at grain boundaries.
