Solar hot water systems application to the solar building test facility and the Tech House

Projects which relate to the current national thrust toward demonstrating applied solar energy are discussed. The first project has as its primary objective the application of a system comprised of a flat plate collector field, an absorption air conditioning system, and a hot water heating system to satisfy most of the annual cooling and heating requirements of a large commercial office building. The other project addresses the application of solar collector technology to the heating and hot water requirements of a domestic residence. In this case, however, the solar system represents only one of several important technology items, the primary objective for the project being the application of space technology to the American home.

Thermal Storage Integrated into Air-Source Heat Pumps to Leverage Building Electrification: A Systematic Literature Review

Air-source heat pumps (ASHPs) can support a decarbonized economy by replacing combustion appliances in homes and electrifying heating systems in buildings. However, ASHPs have not seen significant adoption primarily due to deteriorated performance under cold conditions - at very low temperatures they require auxiliary resistance heating to meet the heating demand and defrost the evaporator. The additional heat lowers the system efficiency. Thermal energy storage (TES) is a candidate technology to help overcome some of these issues. This paper presents a systematic literature review to map the existing research on the integration of TES into ASHPs. Our review of 59 publications indicates that thermal storage increases the ASHP coefficient of performance by 27% on average, albeit with higher initial cost compared to conventional fossil-fueled heating systems. Phase change materials may be ideal to be integrated with ASHPs due to their high energy density and compact design, but only a few publications address TES sizing and design. First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics are widely used to create metrics to assess ASHP-TES integration, and only recently have cost and environmental impact been explored. This literature review suggests that more comprehensive metrics are needed to evaluate the potential benefits of ASHP-TES systems.

System Study: Residual Heat Removal 1998-2020

This report presents an unreliability evaluation of the residual heat removal (RHR) system in two modes of operation (low-pressure injection in response to a large loss-of-coolant accident and in response to post-trip shutdown cooling) at 104 U.S. commercial nuclear reactors. Demand, run hour, and failure data from 1998–2020 for selected components were obtained from the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) Industry Reporting and Information System (IRIS), formerly the INPO Consolidated Events Database (ICES). The unreliability results are trended for the most recent 10-year period while yearly estimates for system unreliability are provided for the entire active period. No statistically significant increasing or decreasing trends were identified in the RHR results.

The development of a residential heating and cooling system using NASA derived technology

A study to determine the technical and economic feasibility of a solar-powered space heating, air-conditioning, and hot water heating system for residential applications is presented. The basic system utilizes a flat-plate solar collector to process incident solar radiation, a thermal energy storage system to store the collected energy for use during night and heavily overcast periods, and an absorption cycle heat pump for actually heating and cooling the residence. In addition, heat from the energy storage system is used to provide domestic hot water. The analyses of the three major components of the system (the solar collector, the energy storage system, and the heat pump package) are discussed and results are presented. The total system analysis is discussed in detail, including the technical performance of the solar-powered system and a cost comparison between the solar-powered system and a conventional system. The projected applicability of the system to different regions of the nation is described.

In-Flight Performance of the TES Loop Heat Pipe Rejection System: Seven Years in Space

The Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) instrument heat rejection system has been operating in space for nearly 8 years since launched on NASA's EOS Aura Spacecraft. The instrument is an infrared imaging fourier transform spectrometer with spectral coverage of 3.2 to 15.4 microns. The loop heat pipe (LHP) based heat rejection system manages all of the instrument components waste heat including the two mechanical cryocoolers and their drive electronics. Five propylene LHPs collect and transport the instrument waste heat to the near room temperature nadir viewing radiators. During the early months of the mission, ice contamination of the cryogenic surfaces including the focal planes led to increased cryocooler loads and the need for periodic decontamination cycles. Focal plane decontamination cycles require power cycling both cryocoolers which also requires the two cryocooler LHPs to turn off and on during each cycle. To date, the cryocooler LHPs have undergone 24 start-ups in orbit successfully. This paper reports on the TES cryocooler loop heat pipe based heat rejection system performance. After a brief overview of the instrument thermal design, the paper presents detailed data on the highly successful space operation of the loop heat pipes since instrument turn-on in 2004. The data shows that the steady-state and transient operation of the LHPs has not changed since 2004 and shows consistent and predictable performance. The LHP based heat rejection system has provided a nearly constant heat rejection heat sink for all of its equipment which has led to exceptional overall instrument performance with world class science.

Design and analysis of aerospace structures at elevated temperatures

An account is given of approaches that have emerged as useful in the incorporation of thermal loading considerations into advanced composite materials-based aerospace structural design practices. Sources of structural heating encompass not only propulsion system heat and aerodynamic surface heating at supersonic speeds, but the growing possibility of intense thermal fluxes from directed-energy weapons. The composite materials in question range from intrinsically nonheat-resistant polymer matrix systems to metal-matrix composites, and increasingly to such ceramic-matrix composites as carbon/carbon, which are explicitly intended for elevated temperature operation.

Development of a Power Electronics-based Testbed for a Flexible Combined Heat and Power System

A flexible combined heat and power (F-CHP) concept, enabled by a power electronics-based power conditioning system (PCS), has been recently proposed as a cost-effective way for supporting the grid with high penetration of renewable energy sources. To verify the design, control, and performance of the overall system, a laboratory-scale testbed is essential. This paper focuses on the development of a power electronics-based testbed for such a F-CHP system. The developed testbed can test the control, grid-connected mode operation, islanded mode operation, and mode transitions, including planned/unplanned islanding and reconnection, of the F-CHP system. In the grid-connected mode, both the steady state and transients of the ac grid can be emulated, and various grid support functions can be tested with the help of the developed PCS converter. In the islanded mode, the external ac loads can also be supported by the F-CHP system. Also, the central controller, which is implemented in a NI CompactRIO, can be tested. Experimental test results for the grid-connected mode, islanded mode, and mode transitions are provided to validate the testbed design.

Geomatchd

Geomatchd is a software tool to assist non-experts in the rapid conceptual design of geothermal district heating systems. This tool comprises three main parts: user-side heating and cooling demand profiles, district heating and cooling (DHC) network models for sizing and optimal layout selection, and geothermal system models for heat extraction calculation and cost comparison. The architecture of Geomatchd is opensource and is intended to simplify efforts by other coders to improve on existing functions, to add functions and to leverage available existing code and data – to improve the tool for public use. Geomatchd and the material supporting its development may provide a more intuitive window on district heating and the use of local shallow geothermal resources.

Transverse flat plate heat pipe experiment

The Transverse Flat Plate Heat Pipe is a thermal control device that serves the dual function of temperature control and mounting base for electronic equipment. In its ultimate application, the heat pipe would be a lightweight structural member that could be configured in a platform or enclosure, and provide temperature control for large space structures, flight experiments, and equipment. The purpose of this experiment is to evaluate the zero g performance of several heat pipe modules. Performance assessment will include: (1) the systems heat transport capability; (2) temperature drop between evaporator and condensor; and (3) the ability to maintain temperature over varying duty cycles and environments. Also, performance degradation, if any, will be monitored over the length of the LDEF mission. The objective of this experiment is to demonstrate that a self-regulated heat pipe thermal control system can maintain hardware temperatures within tolerances of + or - 9 F or less with varying heat inputs, independent of vehicle payload orientation.
