Charge order induced Dirac pockets in the nonsymmorphic crystal TaTe 4

The interplay between charge order (CO) and nontrivial band topology has spurred tremendous interest in understanding topological excitations beyond the single-particle description. In a quasi-one-dimensional nonsymmorphic crystal TaTe 4 , the (2a×2b×3c) charge ordered ground state drives the system into a space group where the symmetry indicator features the emergence of Dirac fermions and unconventional double Dirac fermions. In this study, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, we provide evidence of the CO induced Dirac fermion-related bands near the Fermi level. Furthermore, the band folding at the Fermi level is compatible with the new periodicity dictated by the CO, indicating that the electrons near the Fermi level follow the crystalline symmetries needed to host double Dirac fermions in this system.

Crucial role of thermal fluctuations and vertex corrections for the magnetic pseudogap

It is generally believed that in a two-dimensional metal, whose ground state is antiferromagnetically ordered with Q = (π,π), thermal (static) magnetic fluctuations give rise to precursor behavior above TN in which the spectral function of a hot fermion (the one for which k and k + Q are Fermi surface points) contains two peaks, separated by roughly the same energy as in the antiferromagnetically ordered state. The two peaks persist in some range of T > T N and eventually merge into a single peak at zero frequency. This behavior is obtained theoretically by departing from free fermions in a paramagnet and evaluating the dressed fermionic Green's function by summing up infinite series of diagrams with contributions from thermal magnetic fluctuations. We show, following that keeping vertex renormalization diagrams in these series is crucial as other terms only broaden the spectral function of a hot fermion but do not shift its maximum away from zero frequency. As the consequence, the magnetic pseudogap should be treated as an input for theories that neglect vertex corrections, such as, e.g., Eliashberg theory for magnetically mediated superconductivity. We also analyze the potential pseudogap behavior at T = 0. Here, we argue that it may exist, but only at a finite correlation length, and not as a precursor to antiferromagnetism.

Hidden conformal symmetry from the lattice

We analyze newly expanded and refined data from lattice studies of an SU(3) gauge theory with eight Dirac fermions in the fundamental representation. We focus on the light composite states emerging from these studies, consisting of a set of pseudoscalars and a single light scalar. We first consider the view that this theory is just outside the conformal window. In this case, the pseudoscalars arise from spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry. Identifying the scalar in this case as an approximate dilaton, we fit the lattice data to a dilaton effective field theory, finding that it yields a good fit even at lowest order. For comparison, we then consider the possibility that the theory is inside the conformal window. The fermion mass provides a deformation, triggering confinement. We employ simple scaling laws to fit the lattice data, and find that it is of lesser quality.

Topological Circular Dichroism in Chiral Multifold Semimetals

Uncovering the physical contents of the nontrivial topology of quantum states is a critical problem in condensed matter physics. Here, we study the topological circular dichroism in chiral semimetals using linear response theory and first-principles calculations. We show that, when the low-energy spectrum respects emergent SO(3) rotational symmetry, topological circular dichroism is forbidden for Weyl fermions, and thus is unique to chiral multifold fermions. This is a result of the selection rule that is imposed by the emergent symmetry under the combination of particle-hole conjugation and spatial inversion. Using first-principles calculations, we predict that topological circular dichroism occurs in CoSi for photon energy below about 0.2 eV. In conclusion, our Letter demonstrates the existence of a response property of unconventional fermions that is fundamentally different from the response of Dirac and Weyl fermions, motivating further study to uncover other unique responses.

Axions, WIMPs, proton decay and observable r in SO(10)

Abstract We explore some experimentally testable predictions of an SO (10) axion model which includes two 10-plets of fermions in order to resolve the axion domain wall problem. The axion symmetry can be safely broken after inflation, so that the isocurvature perturbations associated with the axion field are negligibly small. An unbroken gauge $$Z_2$$ Z 2 symmetry in SO (10) ensures the presence of a stable WIMP-like dark matter, a linear combination of the electroweak doublets in the fermion 10-plets and an SO (10) singlet fermion with mass $$\sim 62.5 \; \textrm{GeV}\; (1 \; \textrm{TeV}) $$ ∼ 62.5 GeV ( 1 TeV ) when it is mostly the singlet (doublet) fermion, that co-exists with axion dark matter. We also discuss gauge coupling unification, proton decay, inflation with non-minimal coupling to gravity and leptogenesis. With the identification of the SM singlet Higgs field in the 126 representation of SO (10) as inflaton, the magnetic monopoles are inflated away, and we find $$0.963 \lesssim n_s \lesssim 0.965$$ 0.963 ≲ n s ≲ 0.965 and $$0.003 \lesssim r \lesssim 0.036$$ 0.003 ≲ r ≲ 0.036 , where $$n_s$$ n s and r denote the scalar spectral index and tensor-to-scalar ratio, respectively. These predictions can be tested in future experiments such as CMB-S4.

Using Tau Leptons as a Tool for Studying the Higgs in the SM and Beyond

In the Standard Model, the mass generation of fermions is achieved through the Higgs Yukawa coupling. There exists several more fundamental theories, such as super- symmetry, that could imply deviations of the couplings of the observed Higgs boson to down-type fermions, such as the τ lepton. Therefore, it is necessary to demonstrate the direct coupling of the Higgs boson to the fundamental fermions and to demonstrate the proportionality of the Higgs boson coupling strength to their mass. Furthermore, any deviations from Standard Model expectation could hint at beyond the Standard Model physics. We summarize a measurement of Higgs to Tau leptons at CMS using a simplified template cross section scheme as well as a differential measurement as a function of Higgs transverse momentum, leading jet transverse momentum and the number of jets present in the event. We also summarize recent calorimeter trigger related activities which will help to improve Higgs to fermion measurements in the future runs at the LHC.

Quantum simulation of massive Thirring and Gross--Neveu models for arbitrary number of flavors

The study of fermionic quantum field theories is an important problem for realizing the standard model of particle physics on a quantum computer. As a step towards this goal, we consider the massive Thirring and Gross--Neveu models with arbitrary number of fermion flavors, $N_f$, discretized on a spatial one-dimensional lattice of size $L$ in the Hamiltonian formulation. We compute the gate complexity using the higher-order product formula and using block-encoding/qubitization and quantum singular value transformations in the limit of large $N_f$ and $L$. We also prepare the ground states of both models with excellent fidelity for system sizes up to 20 qubits with $N_f = 1,2,3,4$ using the adaptive-variational quantum imaginary time algorithm. In addition, we also classify the dynamical Lie algebras of these relativistic fermionic models and show that they belong to the same isomorphism class. Our work is a concrete step towards the quantum simulation of real-time dynamics of large $N_f$ fermionic quantum field theories models relevant for chiral symmetry breaking, understanding dimensional transmutation, and exploring the conformal window of field theories on near-term and early fault-tolerant quantum computers.

Nucleon Mass and Charges with Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics

Neutrino oscillation experiments are designed to measure neutrino masses and mixing parameters by scattering them off nuclei such as carbon, oxygen, and argon in detectors. Predictions of neutrino-nuclei cross sections from the Standard Model are needed to extract these parameters, but their theoretical uncertainties remain large due to the complexity of nuclear and hadronic physics. This situation needs to be improved in order to satisfy the precision needs of future experiments. In this dissertation, we focus on working towards a first-principles calculation of the nucleon axial form factor with lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Nucleon axial form factor, which parametrizes the weak responses of a proton or neutron, is difficult to measure experimentally, and it is a dominant uncertainty in neutrino-nuclei cross-section calculations for incoming neutrino energies at around 1 GeV. So a theoretical calculation with lattice QCD provides a non-ambiguous determination of the form factor that could help reducing the uncertainty. The notorious signal-to-noise problem renders calculations of nucleon observables computationally intensive in lattice QCD. In this work, we investigate the use of staggered fermions in nucleon calculations. Staggered fermions are the most computationally efficient fermion discretization in lattice field theory, but certain theoretical issues have so far prevented their applications to nucleon physics. As a stepping stone towards a full calculation of the nucleon axial form factor, this dissertation provides a comprehensive theoretical framework on how to calculate the nucleon mass, vector charge, and axial charge with staggered fermions, together with numerical results demonstrating the methodology. This framework can be generalized to the form factor calculation that will appear in the near future.

Naturally Self-Tuned Low Mass Composite Scalars

Scalar bosons composed of a pair of chiral fermions in a non-confining potential have an effective Yukawa coupling, $g$, to free external chiral fermions. At large distance a Feynman loop of external fermions generates a scale invariant potential, $V_{loop}\propto -g^2/{\rho^{2}}$, for separation $\rho$, which acts on valence fermions. This generally forces the $s$-wave ground state to deform to a static, zero mass, configuration, and for slowly running, perturbative $g$, a large external "shroud" wave function forms. This is related to old results of Landau and Lifshitz in quantum mechanics. The massless composite scalar boson ground state is then an extended object. Infra-red effects can generate a small mass for the system. This points to a perturbative BEH-boson composed of top and anti-top quarks and a novel dynamical mechanism for spontaneous electroweak symmetry breaking.

Majorana versus Dirac Constraints on the Neutrino Dipole Moments

Massive neutrinos are guaranteed to have nonzero electromagnetic moments and, since there are at least three neutrino species, these dipole moments define a matrix. Here, we estimate the current upper bounds on all independent neutrino electromagnetic moments, concentrating on Earth-bound experiments and measurements with solar neutrinos, including the very recent results reported by XENONnT. We make no simplifying assumptions and compare the hypotheses that neutrinos are Majorana fermions or Dirac fermions. In particular, we fully explore constraints in the Dirac-neutrino parameter space. Majorana and Dirac neutrinos are different; for example, the upper bounds on the magnitudes of the elements of the dipole moment matrix are weaker for Dirac neutrinos, relative to Majorana neutrinos. The potential physics reach of next-generation experiments also depends on the nature of the neutrino. We find that a next-generation experiment two orders of magnitude more sensitive to the neutrino electromagnetic moments via $\nu_{\mu}$ elastic scattering may discover that the neutrino electromagnetic moments are nonzero if the neutrinos are Dirac fermions. Instead, if the neutrinos are Majorana fermions, such a discovery is ruled out by existing solar neutrino data, unless there are more than three light neutrinos.

The deconstruction of flavor in the privately democratic Higgs sector

The Standard Model (SM) of particle physics fails to explain the observed hierarchy in fermion masses or the origin of fermion-flavor structure. We construct a model to explain these observations in the quark sector. We introduce a spectrum of new particles consisting of six of each — massive singlet vector-like quarks (VLQs), singlet scalars, and SU(2)-doublet scalars. SM quark masses are generated when the neutral components of the SU(2)-doublet scalars acquire non-zero vacuum expectation values (VEVs). We impose global symmetries to ensure that Yukawa couplings stay roughly flavor diagonal and democratic (of the same order), as well as to suppress tree-level flavor-changing neutral currents. Quark-mass hierarchy then follows from a hierarchy in scalar VEVs. The singlet scalars also acquire weak-scale VEVs. Together with the VLQs, they act as messengers between different generations of quarks in the SM. These messenger particles are responsible for generating the elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Masakawa (CKM) matrix which depend on the ratios of the singlet VEVs and VLQ masses. Constructed this way, the CKM matrix is found to be independent of the SM fermion masses. Using the measured values of the CKM matrix elements and assuming order-one couplings, we derive constraints on the masses of the VLQs and discuss prospects for probing our model in the near future.

Nonergodic dynamics in disorder-free potentials

Highlights: • Dynamics in tilted lattices with harmonic confinement is reviewed. • Both spinless and spinful fermions are analyzed. • Local effective tilt is the relevant parameter for nonergodicity. • Neel or domain wall initial states are studied. • Domains with similar spin orientation act as transport and communication barriers. We review the dynamics of interacting particles in disorder-free potentials concentrating on a combination of a harmonic binding with a constant tilt. We show that a simple picture of an effective local tilt describes a variety of cases. Our examples include spinless fermions (as modeled by Heisenberg spin chain in a magnetic field), spinful fermions as well as bosons that enjoy a larger local on-site Hilbert space. We also discuss the domain-wall dynamics that reveals nonergodic features even for a relatively weak tilt as suggested by Doggen et al. (2020). By adding a harmonic potential on top of the static field we confirm that the surprising regular dynamics is not entirely due to Hilbert space shuttering. It seems better explained by the inhibited transport within the domains of identically oriented spins. Once the spin-1/2 restrictions are lifted as, e.g., for bosons, the dynamics involve stronger entanglement generation. Again for domain wall melting, the effect of the harmonic potential is shown to lead mainly to an effective local tilt.

Structure of the Majorana Clifford group

In quantum information science, Clifford operators and stabilizer codes play a central role for systems of qubits (or qudits). In this study, we study their analogs for systems composed of Majorana fermions. In this case, a crucial role is played by fermion parity symmetry, which is an unbreakable symmetry present in any system with fundamentally fermionic degrees of freedom. We prove that the subgroup of parity-preserving Majorana Cliffords can be represented by the orthogonal group over the binary field 𝔽 2 , and we show how it can be generated by braiding operators and used to construct any (even-parity) Majorana stabilizer code. We also analyze the frame potential for this so-called p-Clifford group when acting on a fixed-parity sector of the Hilbert space, proving that it is equivalent to the frame potential of the ordinary Clifford group acting on the same sector.

Large tunable anomalous Hall effect in the kagome antiferromagnet U 3 Ru 4 Al 12

The Berry curvature in magnetic systems is attracting interest due to the potential tunability of topological features via the magnetic structure. f electrons, with their large spin-orbit coupling, abundance of noncollinear magnetic structures, and high electronic tunability, are attractive candidates to search for tunable topological properties. In this study, we measure anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the distorted kagome heavy fermion antiferromagnet U 3 Ru 4 Al 12 . Furthermore, a large intrinsic AHE in high fields reveals the presence of a large Berry curvature. Moreover, the fields required to obtain the large Berry curvature are significantly different between B ∥ a and B ∥ a * , providing a mechanism to control the topological response in this system. Theoretical calculations illustrate that this sensitivity may be due to the heavy fermion character of the electronic structure. These results shed light on the Berry curvature of a strongly correlated band structure in magnetically frustrated heavy fermion materials but also emphasize 5 f electrons as an ideal playground for studying field-tuned topological states.

Crystalline solutions of the Kohn-Sham equations in the fractional quantum Hall regime

A Kohn-Sham density functional approach has recently been developed for the fractional quantum Hall effect, which maps the strongly interacting electrons into a system of weakly interacting composite fermions subject to an exchange correlation potential as well as a density dependent gauge field that mimics the "flux quanta" bound to composite fermions. To get a feel for the role of various terms, we study the behavior of the self-consistent solution as a function of the strength of the exchange correlation potential, which is varied through an ad hoc multiplicative factor. Here, we find that a crystal phase is stabilized when the exchange correlation interaction is sufficiently strong relative to the composite-fermion cyclotron energy. Various properties of this crystal are examined.

Mutually elusive: Vectorlike antileptons and leptoquarks

We study the properties of vectorlike fermions that have the same gauge charges as the Standard Model lepton doublets, but opposite lepton number. These antileptons undergo decays mediated by heavier scalar leptoquarks, while the symmetries of this renormalizable model protect the vectorlike fermions and the leptoquarks from standard decays probed so far at colliders. We derive upper limits on the new Yukawa couplings imposed by flavor-changing processes, including 𝐵 → 𝐾⁢$v\bar{v}$ and $𝐵_𝑠$ − $\bar{𝐵}_𝑠$ mixing, and show that they are compatible with prompt antilepton decays at the LHC for wide parameter ranges. If the new particles couple predominantly to second-generation quarks, then their collider probes involve multiple jets and two taus or neutrinos, and are hampered by large backgrounds. If couplings to third-generation quarks are large, then the collider signals involve top quarks, and can be probed more efficiently at the LHC. Even in that case, both the vectorlike fermion doublet and the leptoquarks remain more elusive than in models with standard decays.

Quantum Criticality of Antiferromagnetism and Superconductivity with Relativity

We study a quantum phase transition from a massless to massive Dirac fermion phase in a new two-dimensional bipartite lattice model of electrons that is amenable to sign-free quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Importantly, interactions in our model are not only invariant under SU(2) symmetries of spin and charge like the Hubbard model, but they also preserve an Ising-like electron spin-charge flip symmetry. From unbiased fermion bag Monte Carlo simulations with up to 2304 sites, we show that the massive fermion phase spontaneously breaks this Ising symmetry, picking either antiferromagnetism or superconductivity, and that the transition at which both orders are simultaneously quantum critical belongs to a new “chiral spin-charge symmetric” universality class. We explain our observations using effective potential and renormalization group calculations within the framework of a continuum field theory.

Fractional Quantum Hall Effect with Unconventional Pairing in Monolayer Graphene

Motivated by the observation of even denominator fractional quantum Hall effect in the n = 3 Landau level of monolayer graphene [Kim et al., Nat. Phys. 15, 154 (2019)], we consider a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer variational state for composite fermions and find that the composite-fermion Fermi sea in this Landau level is unstable to an f-wave pairing. Analogous calculation suggests the possibility of a p-wave pairing of composite fermions at half filling in the n = 2 graphene Landau level, whereas no pairing instability is found at half filling in the n = 0 and n = 1 graphene Landau levels. The relevance of these results to experiments is discussed.
