A fast algorithm for the calculation of junction capacitance and its application for impurity profile determination

A fast algorithm is described which calculates the space charge layer width and junction capacitance for an arbitrary impurity profile and for plane, cylindrical and spherical junctions. The algorithm is based on the abrupt space charge edge (ASCE) approximation. A method to use the algorithm for the determination of impurity profiles for two-sided junctions is presented. An expression is derived for the built-in voltage to be used for capacitance calculations with the ASCE approximation. Experimental evidence is given that the algorithm permits very accurate capacitance calculations and also predicts the exact temperature dependence of the junction capacitance.

Operating manual: Fast response solar array simulator

The fast response solar array simulator (FRSAS) is a universal solar array simulator which features an AC response identical to that of a real array over a large range of DC operating points. In addition, short circuit current (I sub sc) and open circuit voltage (V sub oc) are digitally programmable over a wide range for use not only in simulating a wide range of array sizes, but also to simulate (I sub sc) and (V sub oc) variations with illumination and temperature. A means for simulation of current variations due to spinning is available. Provisions for remote control and monitoring, automatic failure sensing and warning, and a load simulator are also included.

Experimental physics characteristics of a heavy-metal-reflected fast-spectrum critical assembly

A zero-power critical assembly was designed, constructed, and operated for the purpose of conducting a series of benchmark experiments dealing with the physics characteristics of a UN-fueled, Li-7 cooled, Mo-reflected, drum-controlled compact fast reactor for use with a space-power electric conversion system. The experimental program consisted basically of measuring the differential neutron spectra and the changes in critical mass that accompanied the stepwise addition of (Li-7)3N, Hf, Ta, and W to a basic core fueled with U metal in a pin-type Ta honeycomb structure. In addition, experimental results were obtained on power distributions, control characteristics, neutron lifetime, and reactivity worths of numerous absorber, structural, and scattering materials.

Fast-acting self-healing metallic fuse.

Description of a fast-acting nonmechanical self-healing mercury fuse capable of protecting a high current circuit or device from overcurrent fault damages. Basically the self-healing fuse consists of two enclosed mercury reservoirs connected by a fine capillary tube filled with mercury that serves as the fusing element. It is pointed out that a better understanding of the energy conversion process involved in the operation of the device could help explore other device configurations (such as a tapering geometry and use of magnetic field to drive the arc into the fuse wall on inductive loads, etc.) and thus extend the range of capabilities for this type of protective device.

Hanle-effect mean-life measurements on aligned fast ions.

Mean lives of several levels of the first two ionized states of argon were obtained by Hanle-effect measurements on the fast-beam particles, following coherent alignment of the magnetic substates by beam-foil interaction. The g factors of the levels were obtained by observation of quantum beats. Mean lives are compared with results of the usual beam-foil mean-life measurement technique. We show that the Hanle effect can sometimes clarify beam-foil results.

Improved fast response pressure gauge for shock reflection studies in ionized gases.

An improved design is presented for a fast response pressure gauge (0.1 microsec risetime) suitable for short duration measurements on the end wall of a shock tube. The design includes standard components to facilitate gauge construction, and it utilizes dual capacitive sensing elements together with a signal differencing scheme to permit use of the gauge in ionized gases. Pressure-time records obtained with the gauge are presented showing details of pressure profiles on the shock tube end wall for reflecting shock waves in ionized gases.

Fast-interface-state losses in charge-coupled devices.

A simple model is presented that makes it possible to predict signal losses in charge-coupled devices due to fast-interface-state trapping. Presented experimental losses in a twelve-bit two-phase charge-coupled device with overlapping Si and Al gates are shown to agree well with the prediction of the model.

Broadening of fast-beam spectral lines due to diffraction at the entrance slit of a spectrometer.

Experimental and theoretical demonstration of the necessity to take into account the effects of diffraction at a spectrometer's entrance slit in adjusting the spectrometer for observation of fast-beam spectral lines under conditions of minimum linewidth. An approximate expression is obtained for the optimum entrance slit width to be used in order to avoid the pronounced broadening of the spectral lines that occurs for very narrow entrance slits.

Mean lifetimes and equilibrium abundances in the fast CN cycle.

It is shown that the production of small nitrogen to carbon ratios is possible, in contrast to the equilibrium production in the ordinary CN cycle. Associated with such a production are high ratios of C-13/C-12 and of N-15/N-14. The final ratios depend on the conditions under which cessation of hydrogen burning occurs under astrophysical circumstances. A table showing proton capture mean lifetimes of CN nuclei is provided together with tables of the equilibrium abundances in a fast CN cycle. The ratios of final abundances of nitrogen to carbon as functions of temperature are also presented.

Fast digital noise filter capable of locating spectral peaks and shoulders

Experimental data frequently have a poor signal-to-noise ratio which one would like to enhance before analysis. With the data in digital form, this may be accomplished by means of a digital filter. A fast digital filter based upon the principle of least squares and using the techniques of convoluting integers is described. In addition to smoothing, this filter also is capable of accurately and simultaneously locating spectral peaks and shoulders. This technique has been adapted into a computer subroutine, and results of several test cases are shown, including mass spectral data and data from a proportional counter for the High Energy Astronomy Observatory.

Determination and evaluation of performance limit criteria of fast-response electrohydraulic servosystems

Limit criteria for determining the dynamic performance capabilities of high performance, fast-response (greater than 100 Hz) electrohydraulic servosystems are presented. A detailed analysis of the maximum load locus of these systems is used as a basis for the derivation of improved limit criteria. These criteria predict the maximum performance limits caused by system nonlinearities and physical limitations. The criteria are applied to experimental data to verify their validity. Design criteria which assist in the selection of system components for optimal performance are also discussed.

Fast-spectrum space-power-reactor concepts using boron control devices

Several fast-spectrum space power reactor concepts that use boron carbide control devices were examined to determine the neutronic feasibility of the designs. The designs considered were (1) a 199-fuel-pin, 12-poison-reflector-control-drum reactor; (2) a 232-fuel-pin reactor with 12 reflector drums and three in-core control rods; (3) a 337-fuel-pin design with 12 incore control rods; and a 181-fuel-pin design with six drums closely coupled to the core to increase reactivity per drum. Adequate reactivity control and excess reactivity could be obtained for each concept, and the goals of 50,000 hours at 2.17 thermal megawatts with a lithium-7 coolant outlet temperature of 1222 K could be met without exceeding the 1-percent-clad-creep criterion. Heating rates in the boron carbide were calculated, but a heat transfer analysis was not done.

Calculated power distribution of a thermionic, beryllium oxide reflected, fast-spectrum reactor

A procedure is developed and used to calculate the detailed power distribution in the fuel elements next to a beryllium oxide reflector of a fast-spectrum, thermionic reactor. The results of the calculations show that, although the average power density in these outer fuel elements is not far from the core average, the power density at the very edge of the fuel closest to the beryllium oxide is about 1.8 times the core avearge.

Stress wave calculations in composite plates using the fast Fourier transform.

The protection of composite turbine fan blades against impact forces has prompted the study of dynamic stresses in composites due to transient loads. The mathematical model treats the laminated plate as an equivalent anisotropic material. The use of Mindlin's approximate theory of crystal plates results in five two-dimensional stress waves. Three of the waves are flexural and two involve in-plane extensional strains. The initial value problem due to a transient distributed transverse force on the plate is solved using Laplace and Fourier transforms. A fast computer program for inverting the two-dimensional Fourier transform is used. Stress contours for various stresses and times after application of load are obtained for a graphite fiber-epoxy matrix composite plate. Results indicate that the points of maximum stress travel along the fiber directions.
