Case Study: Hybridizing Nuclear Energy Systems in the U.S.

This case study was presented at the ICTP-IAEA VIRTUAL Course on Nuclear-Renewable Integrated Energy Systems: Phenomenology, Research and Development. It provides preliminary results on an analysis of hybridizing the two nuclear power plants owned by Xcel Energy and located in Minnesota. The analysis extends previous analyses that provided only price-taker results. Those assume adjusting the generation sold to the grid does not impact locational marginal electricity prices nor do they estimate impacts on the total net cost to serve the load. This presentation summarizes the new technique that was developed to both optimize the size and operations of the hybridized system and the resulting impacts on the grid when it is operated optimally.

Visual Modeling for Complex System Valuation: Implementation Guidance

Within the Transactive Systems Program (TSP) at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) the need to incorporate a valuation analysis design early within the research process of transactive energy systems led to development of a valuation methodology. This methodology allows the modeling of economic exchanges within a complex system and supports the evaluation of individual stakeholder economic outcomes in addition to systemwide costs and benefits. The use of visual modeling practices enables the research team to reach common understanding and agreement on the analysis design within the complex system. While this methodology was developed for the valuation of transactive energy systems, it can be applied to any complex system where a granular economic analysis is desired. It allows for the inclusion of equity analyses and ties individual activities and microeconomic outcomes with the systemwide macroeconomic impacts. This document serves as implementation guidance for analysts planning to deploy the methodology within a research study. The appendixes provide specific guidance on how this methodology is deployed within the TSP at PNNL for analysts seeking guidance for deployment within that context.

Baseline Testing of the Club Car Carryall With Asymmetric Ultracapacitors

The NASA John H. Glenn Research Center initiated baseline testing of the Club Car Carryall with asymmetric ultracapacitors as a way to reduce pollution in industrial settings, reduce fossil fuel consumption, and reduce operating costs for transportation systems. The Club Car Carryall provides an inexpensive approach to advance the state of the art in electric vehicle technology in a practical application. The project transfers space technology to terrestrial use via non-traditional partners, and provides power system data valuable for future space applications. The work was done under the Hybrid Power Management (HPM) Program, which includes the Hybrid Electric Transit Bus (HETB). The Carryall is a state of the art, ground up, electric utility vehicle. A unique aspect of the project was the use of a state of the art, long life ultracapacitor energy storage system. Innovative features, such as regenerative braking through ultracapacitor energy storage, are planned. Regenerative braking recovers much of the kinetic energy of the vehicle during deceleration. The Carryall was tested with the standard lead acid battery energy storage system, as well as with an asymmetric ultracapacitor energy storage system. The report concludes that the Carryall provides excellent performance, and that the implementation of asymmetric ultracapacitors in the power system can provide significant performance improvements.

Energy Paths for the Yurok People

The Yurok Tribe has been working for more than two decades to bring adequate, cost-effective energy services to their Tribal members. With the completion of the electric line extension to Wautec, they are well on their way to an effective and sustainable energy future. However, there is still much work to be done; many Tribal households in the Upper Reservation are still without reliable, affordable electric power. Now the Tribe needs to determine the next steps to realize their energy vision. This Yurok Tribe energy strategic planning study examined electricity usage, costs and infrastructure, as well as electricity needs on the Reservation. It also assessed the Tribe’s energy resources. Equipped with this information, the project team conducted an energy options analysis that examined different project opportunities and identified key projects that are both feasible to implement and will help the Tribe reach its stated Energy Vision. There are still numerous households in the Upper Reservation and adjacent lands that are without grid electric power, and it is likely that most of them will remain disconnected from the grid because of their remoteness. To provide these community members with reliable, affordable, modern energy services their homes will need to be electrified via a robust off-grid energy services program that installs and maintains off-grid energy systems. This is the key need that is explored and addressed in this plan.

Energy Scheduling-based Operating Envelopes including a Distribution System Branch Screening Algorithm

This paper presents an energy scheduling-based formulation for computing operating envelopes including a distribution branch screening algorithm, termed DBS-ES. The contribution of the paper is two-fold: firstly, it presents an innovative methodology for calculating operating envelopes using energy scheduling (baseline), and secondly, it enhances this methodology by incorporating a custom distribution branch screening algorithm (DBS-ES). The custom algorithm leverages power system knowledge to reduce both model build time and total processing time while maintaining the same scheduling results as the baseline. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated through experiments on the IEEE13, IEEE123, and EPRI Secondary test feeders. Results highlight a 24.5% decrease in model build time and an 8.17% decrease in total processing time when using DBS-ES compared to the baseline, specifically for the IEEE123 test feeder. Additionally, the paper briefly discusses the influence of utility-controlled storage on computing operating envelopes, noting a general incre

The Role of Energy Storage in the Uptake of Renewable Energy: A Model Comparison Approach

The power sector needs to ensure a rapid transition towards a low-carbon energy system to avoid the dangerous consequences of greenhouse gas emissions. Storage technologies are a promising option to provide the power system with the flexibility required when intermittent renewables are present in the electricity generation mix. This paper focuses on the role of electricity storage in energy systems with high shares of renewable sources. The study encompasses a model comparison approach where four models (GENeSYS-MOD, MUSE, NATEM, and urbs - MX) are used to analyse the storage uptake in North America. The analysis addresses the conditions affecting storage uptake in each country and its dependence on resource availability, technology costs, and public policies. Results show that storage may promote emissions reduction at lower costs when renewable mandates are in place whereas in presence of carbon taxes, renewables may compete with other low-carbon options. The study also highlights the main modelling approach shortcomings in the modelling of electricity storage in integrated assessment models.

Optimal Dispatch for the US Virgin Islands to Increase Renewable Rates in Saint Croix

The US Virgin Islands, like many other small island nations, face significant challenges related to its energy supply. Their dependency on imported fossil fuels not only drives up energy costs, but also contributes to different environmental problems. Nevertheless, their generally sunny and windy climate makes this archipelago an ideal location for renewable energy development. Increasing the use of sources such as wind, and solar can help reduce their energy dependency, lower their levelized cost of electricity, and improve the health and wellbeing of local communities. In this paper, an optimal dispatcher is employed to analyze the implications on energy security of employing different technology options according to the plans of the local system operator. In this context, short term stability is ensured by inserting operational constraints in the energy management system based on stability analysis developed in PSCAD. The results highlight the usefulness of integrating PV and battery system, while further analysis are required to justify integrating wind power.

Convex Optimization of Integrated Power-Gas Energy Flow Model With Applications to Probabilistic Energy Flow

Energy flow calculation is a fundamental problem of the integrated power and gas system (IPGS) operation and planning. However, the nonlinear gas flow model introduces major challenges to the energy flow calculation. In this paper, we propose a tractably convex optimization model to solve the energy flow problem in IPGSs. It is demonstrated that the proposed optimization model has the same optimal solution as the original nonlinear steady energy flow model. Also, piecewise linearization is adopted to tightly linearize the nonlinear objective function of the model, which transforms the formulated convex optimization into a linear program one. Thus, the computation complexity of the proposed energy flow model is significantly reduced as compared with the existing methods. In addition, the proposed model can be extended to probabilistic energy flow estimation. Extensive case studies are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed energy flow model using three IPGSs.
