Midlatitude electron precipitation: A possible source of contamination of galactic X and gamma-ray measurements

The effect of trapped and precipitated particles in the magnetosphere on the measurement of galactic X-rays and gamma rays is discussed. To minimize contamination caused by electron precipitation, most galactic X-ray and gamma ray measurements are conducted at equatorial or relatively low to middle latitudes where the influence of auroral effects is expected to be small. Substorm-related VLF phase perturbations also affect the measurements. If such perturbation are indicative of electron precipitation at middle to low latitudes, then their relatively high frequency of occurrence, as many as 100 per year, is evidence that electron precipitation at these latitudes may pose a problem to some galactic X-ray and gamma ray measurements. Charts and maps are presented to show: (1) phase recordings from sixteen sub-ionospheric VLF propagation paths, (2) map of great circle propagation paths, (3) ionization rates in the nighttime ionosphere due to several sources, and (4) computer phase variation for the NLK-APL path versus electron flux for different e-folding energies.

Standard deviation of scatterometer measurements from space.

The standard deviation of scatterometer measurements has been derived under assumptions applicable to spaceborne scatterometers. Numerical results are presented which show that, with sufficiently long integration times, input signal-to-noise ratios below unity do not cause excessive degradation of measurement accuracy. The effects on measurement accuracy due to varying integration times and changing the ratio of signal bandwidth to IF filter-noise bandwidth are also plotted. The results of the analysis may resolve a controversy by showing that in fact statistically useful scatterometer measurements can be made from space using a 20-W transmitter, such as will be used on the S-193 experiment for Skylab-A.

Effects of experimentally measured pressure oscillations on the vibration of a solid rocket motor

Results are presented of firing a Nike rocket against a backstop for the purpose of obtaining pressure fluctuations in the rocket case and determining their relationship to structural vibrations of the case. Special care was required to obtain these pressure fluctuations because of the much higher static pressure generated in the rocket. Very small pressure fluctuations within the rocket case can cause significant vibration levels. A previously observed high frequency was shown to decrease with time before completely disappearing at about 1 second of burning time. The vibration of the case itself is probably related to the longitudinal structural modes at frequencies below 500 Hz and is dependent on local structural conditions at frequencies above this value.
