Considerations for design of future research and development interactive image analysis systems

Future interactive image analysis systems must provide for the increased processing requirements imposed by a thermal channel to LANDSAT-3 and the increased number of spectral channels with significantly higher spatial resolution provided by the LANDSAT-D thematic mapper. Other design considerations must include the rapidly changing technology in memories and special purpose processors, as well as the analyst-machine interface and the human factors involved. The centralized and distributed system approaches are examined in relation to the optimum design configuration of future systems.

Consideration of design and calibration of terrestrial reference solar cells

A discussion is presented on the problems encountered in the design of a reference cell that meets basic criteria, starting with basic design considerations, and proceeding with the precautions taken to ensure a global monitoring capability. The effects of the variations in atmospheric conditions on the calibration and use of reference cells are presented along with a discussion of the simplifications brought about by the use of spectrally matched test and reference cells. Finally, a method of matching test modules and arrays to reference cells by a red/blue response ratio technique is described.

Research instrumentation for tornado electromagnetics emissions detection

Instrumentation for receiving, processing, and recording HF/VHF electromagnetic emissions from severe weather activity is described. Both airborne and ground-based instrumentation units are described on system and subsystem levels. Design considerations, design decisions, and the rationale behind the decisions are given. Performance characteristics are summarized and recommendations for improvements are given. The objectives, procedures, and test results of the following are presented: (1) airborne flight test in the Midwest U.S.A. (Spring 1975) and at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida (Summer 1975); (2) ground-based data collected in North Georgia (Summer/Fall 1975); and (3) airborne flight test in the Midwest (late Spring 1976) and at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida (Summer 1976). The Midwest tests concentrated on severe weather with tornadic activity; the Florida and Georgia tests monitored air mass convective thunderstorm characteristics. Supporting ground truth data from weather radars and sferics DF nets are described.

Considerations for spacecraft design for MSAT

The paper describes the system design considerations and design activities performed at Spar Aerospace in the last 18 months in support of the development of a Canadian Mobile Communication Satellite (MSAT). Recent evolving international agreements and events of importance to MSAT are the emergence of the U.S. Operator and the Mobile WARC 1987. Their impacts on the system requirements and system design are discussed. Solutions to these new requirements are implemented into the 9 Beam baseline design. The system design and the parallel technology development permit the support of a commercial flight program.

Iodine solid sorbent design: a literature review of the critical criteria for consideration

Designing sorbents for iodine capture in different conditions requires selection and optimization of a large and diverse range of variables. These variables fall into general categories (or features) of sorbent activity, sorbent stability, and the fate of the loaded material in terms of the disposal (waste form) options available. To illustrate, silver-loaded, high-porosity sorbents make for maximized iodine capture and less pressure drop in a column-based sorption system approach, however, this high porosity can lead to less mechanically stable sorbents. Additionally, waste forms containing silver must also be compliant with additional criteria for hazardous waste disposal. Thus, all these aspects must be considered simultaneously when selecting a sorbent for utilization under specific conditions. Information is given for different types of sorbent design considerations for different operating conditions and some emphasis is also given on promising alternatives for silver as the active (chemisorption-based) getter metal. Discussion is given around demonstrated options for waste forms for different metal-iodide compounds.

Safety considerations in the design of manned spaceflight hardware

Some of the significant potential hazards affecting NASA's planned space-flight initiatives are discussed together with the safety design strategies they mandate. Attention is given to the role played by NASA's newly centralized safety organization during the design of manned space flight hardware and software. Prompt-effect/physical hazards include fire, explosions and depressurization, and natural and man-made space debris. Delayed-effect hazards include radiation and toxic contamination, microgravity effects, crew illness and injury, and isolation. Safety design considerations for software and hypersonic transatmospheric vehicles are evaluated.

Considerations for Radiator Design in Multi-Megawatt Nuclear Electric Propulsion Applications

A key performance parameter determining the feasibility and performance of a multi-megawatt nuclear electric vehicle is the power systems specific mass (mass per unit of electric power output). The specific mass of the main radiators is the largest single element within the power system and can be greatly affected by numerous assumptions and design considerations. Among these are the number of parallel fluid loops, the overall geometry and view factor of the radiator, and for high temperature systems the method for accommodating the temperature limit of water heat pipes. Analyses are performed to develop an understanding of this trade space to enable a more accurate mass estimate and to help guide technology development efforts.
