HYPERS Software Development

Providing software support for HYPERS and creating internal tools. NASA has a long and decorated history of spaceflight innovation and achievements. The next great endeavor is NASA’s Journey to Mars, which will be achieved with the Space Launch System (SLS) and Orion capsule. Developing and testing these systems is no easy feat. Commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) tools do not always provide enough functionality for engineers to do their job efficiently, making internal custom-made tools is necessary to meet the expected launch date. The purpose of this internship was to provide software support to the Storable Propellants and Hydraulic Systems Branch, specifically the Hypergolics Software (HYPERS) team. This included developing tools to parse unique measurements from the vehicle into the format specified by the HYPERS team. Displays were also created per requirements. Another major component of this internship was to create an intuitive interactive offline graphing application. The current tool for plotting vehicle data does not have all the functionality and features that HYPERS would like. By inputting a vehicle data file, the application plots the data based on the time range and components the user would like to view. After the graph is generated, the user is able to zoom in, pan horizontally, add comments, hover over data points, and take a snapshot of the current state of the graph. These additional features will help engineers quickly investigate the relationship between vehicle components through data visualization.

Novel Deployable Sunshade for a Formation-Flying Telescope

- Deployable sunshade is based on folding paper party decoration. - Cellular structure creates strong, rigid form. - Instead of folding flat, the cellular fan is wrapped around a central hollow core to accommodate a focusing optic. - Imbedded spring ribs deploy the cellular fan into a large disk. - Shade is constructed of thermal blanket materials and is sewn together rather than glued. - Design bears some resemblance to JPL starshade, but is a much simpler design - JPL design includes pantograph-like mechanical structure and motors to drive deployment.

Genetically engineered Foot and Mouth Disease Virus and related proteins, polynucleotides, compositions, methods and systems

Genetically engineered Foot and Mouth Disease Virus (FMDV) and related engineered proteins and polynucleotides, nanolipoprotein particles, compositions, methods and systems are described. The genetically engineered FMDV is modified by the strategic insertion of a protein tag into select regions of the FMDV genome which encode viral proteins that are exposed on the surface of the FMDV viral capsid. The inserted protein tag is displayed as a decoration or attachment on the viral capsid surface.

From PeleC to PeleACC, to PeleC++

PeleC is an Exascale Computing Project application for simulating compressible combustion in complex geometries. It has been built on top of the popular AMReX library. In the beginning of the Exascale Computing Project, PeleC was focused on KNL. It uses a mixture of C++, C, and kernels written in Fortran to obtain performance by focusing on vectorization. Recently we have taken two approaches in deciding PeleC's future for obtaining performance on exascale GPU machines. In the first programming model, we decorated the Fortran kernels with OpenACC directives. This expedited our ability to run at large scales on Summit's GPUs, where we achieved a significant speedup over the CPUs on Summit. The second programming model involved rewriting the Fortran kernels in C++ and using AMReX's Kokkos-like lambda abstractions for running on the GPU. This resulted in similar speedups on Summit's GPUs over merely utilizing the CPUs. Both approaches involved AMReX's management of memory transfers between the device and host. In this work, we compare and contrast the benefits and pitfalls to both programming approaches regarding performance, performance portability, and productivity. We also discuss advantages we have found in taking the time to modernize our code and why have chosen a specific pathway to prepare our code for the future DOE exascale machines.

Polyoxometalate derivatized metal oxide electrodes

A porous transparent electrode is formed where a film comprising of semiconducting nanoparticles is decorated with polyoxometalates (POMs) bonded to their surfaces. The semiconducting nanoparticles are transparent metal oxide. The semiconducting nanoparticles include tin-doped indium oxide (ITO), fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO), or titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ). In an embodiment, the POM is [SiW 12 O 40 ]L 4− ; [α-P 2 W 18 O 62 ] 6− ; or [α 2 -P 2 W 17 O 61 ] 10− . The semiconducting nanoparticles bond to the POM through a combination of electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonds. The porous transparent electrode can be placed in a protonated form or ion-paired with alkali metal cations or tetraalkylammonium cations.

CiteSoft_Py

There is a need to provide a way for dev-users (Scientists, Engineers, and other Software Developers) to get credit (citations) when they contribute to an important software package - particularly a large package that is already established. Various solutions (including cross package) solutions do exist, but a simple standard format that can work between multiple packages and multiple languages in a modular way is not widely available. CiteSoft_py is a python implementation of CiteSoft. CiteSoft is a plain text standard consisting of a format and a protocol that exports the citations for the end-users for whichever softwares they have used. CiteSoft has been designed so that software dev-users can rely upon it regardless of coding language or platform, and even for cases where multiple codes are working in a coupled manner. The CiteSoft_py implementation includes python decorators to make wrappers for facile use. The purpose is that when dev-users (scientists, engineers and professional programmers) contribute to a collaborative software project, that the appropriate citations (e.g., journal article, conference proceeding) are provided to the end-user. The end-user does not need to know how to use a command line interface, API, etc.
