Ensuring a Nuclear Power Plant Safe State Following an EMP Event - Task 7 Deliverable: EMP Testing of Secondary Coupling to Instrumentation Cables

Sandia National Laboratories performed tests to address the potential vulnerability concerns of a coupled High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP) inducing secondary coupling onto critical instrumentation and control cables in a nuclear power plant, with specific focus on early-time HEMP. Three types of receiving cables in nine configurations were tested to determine transfer functions between two electrically separated cables referenced to the common mode input current on the transmitting cable. One type of transfer function related the input short circuit current and resulting open circuit voltage on the receiving cable. The other transfer function related the input short circuit current and the resulting short circuit current on the receiving cable. A 500 A standard HEMP waveform was input into the transfer functions to calculate peak coupling values on the receiving cables. The highest level of coupling using the standard waveform occurred when cables were in direct contact, with a peak short circuit current of 85 A and open circuit voltage of 9.8 kV, while configurations with separated cables predicted coupling levels of less than 5 A or 500 V.

Investigation of Surface and Marine-Cloud Coupling and its Impact on Cloud Droplet Number Concentrations and Cloud Cover Over the Southern Ocean

The proposed work involves characterizing and quantifying both the thermodynamic and dynamical coupling of marine low clouds (MLC) with the sea surface using Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) observations during MARCUS field campaign and an LES model. ARM data from multiple sensors will be used (e.g., Doppler cloud radar, ceilometer, and microwave radiometer) to characterize the MLC-surface coupling by virtue of the vertical structure and integrated quantities of boundary-layer clouds, aerosols, as well as atmospheric profiles and surface meteorology. We have used a combination of case studies and statistics-based composite analyses to find any linkages between large-scale dynamics, MLC-surface coupling, and cloud and boundary layer properties, the sequence of which reflects the chain of causality. An LES model with explicit aerosol physics, which includes the cycle of aerosols by being consumed as CCN and be regenerated following cloud droplet evaporation, has been run to determine the sources and sinks of Nd and their dependence on the degree of MLC-surface coupling. We have examined the systematic differences in both Nd and cloud occurrence between the two clusters under different meteorological conditions and further examine their respective roles, as well as causal relationships by means of LES modeling. This study helped improve our understanding of the ACI by differentiating the dynamic role of the coupling and cloud physics denoted by Nd, bridging the linkage in the chain toward understanding mechanisms governing the persistence of MLC over the Southern Ocean, solving the long-lasting problem of the cloud cover underestimation over the SO by GCMs. Ample ARM data and LES model have been employed to achieve the objectives of the study.

Wire Scanner Assessment of Transverse Beam Size in the Fermilab Side-Coupled Linac

The Fermilab Side-Coupled Linac contains seven 805 MHz modules accelerating H- beam from 116 MeV to 400 MeV. Each module contains at least one wire scanner, yielding beam intensity at positions along a transverse direction. These wire scanners each contain three wires, mounted at different angles: "X", "Y", and 45° between "X" and "Y" to analyze coupling. Recently, a significant amount of transverse X-Y coupling was identified within wire scanner data from the Side-Coupled Linac, which has been present in data from the past decade. This realization has prompted an investigation into the wire scanner's utility as a diagnostic tool in the Fermilab Linac. This work presents efforts to better characterize the wire scanners' limitations and the phenomenon occurring in the Side-Coupled Linac.

Deriving Effective Coupling Strength With Born-Oppenheimer Approx.

Tunable couplers have been important in the development of superconducting quantum computers. The ability to maintain zero coupling between qubits during operation, a feature of high-fidelity quantum gates, has been shown to be possible with the use of tunable couplers. As an example, Sete et al., 2021 showed this was possible with a tunable coupler between transmons: the qubit-coupler and qubit-qubit couplings create a net effective coupling strength between the qubits that can be tuned to zero. However, the derivation of the effective coupling strength between the qubits is quite complex. We propose a simpler method of obtaining this effective coupling with the Born-Oppenheimer approximation.

The Influence of Shallow Subsurface Properties on Particle Motion in Acoustic-Seismic Coupling

Atmospheric acoustic waves transmit energy into the solid Earth through air-to-ground coupling. These waves are recorded by seismic sensors and provide insight into both atmospheric phenomena and subsurface properties. Interpreting these signals is often challenging because they are modulated by subsurface structure and the incidence angle of the acoustic wave. This study examines acoustic--seismic coupling generated by the 2012 Camp Minden Explosion, which was recorded by hundreds of seismoacoustic stations. We apply a novel technique to quantify the seismic particle motion, model coupled waves with a propagator matrix approach, and apply a Bayesian inversion to infer properties of the shallow subsurface. Our analysis reveals that prograde motion is widespread and focused in low shear-wave velocity regions, such as the Mississippi Embayment, and retrograde motion is more common in higher shear-velocity areas. Inversion results at some stations produce plausible subsurface models with strong waveform fits, while inversions at other sites are less successful. These results indicate prograde particle motion in air-to-ground coupled waves is more prevalent than previously recognized and may serve as a diagnostic for shallow velocity structure. Our comprehensive modeling and inversion framework provides a potential method to extract layered near-surface properties from acoustic-seismic coupling observations.

Radical Coupling Reactions of Hydroxystilbene Glucosides and Coniferyl Alcohol: A Density Functional Theory Study

The monolignols, p-coumaryl, coniferyl, and sinapyl alcohol, arise from the general phenylpropanoid biosynthetic pathway. Increasingly, however, authentic lignin monomers derived from outside this process are being identified and found to be fully incorporated into the lignin polymer. Among them, hydroxystilbene glucosides, which are produced through a hybrid process that combines the phenylpropanoid and acetate/malonate pathways, have been experimentally detected in the bark lignin of Norway spruce (Picea abies). Several interunit linkages have been identified and proposed to occur through homo-coupling of the hydroxystilbene glucosides and their cross-coupling with coniferyl alcohol. In the current work, the thermodynamics of these coupling modes and subsequent rearomatization reactions have been evaluated by the application of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The objective of this paper is to determine favorable coupling and cross-coupling modes to help explain the experimental observations and attempt to predict other favorable pathways that might be further elucidated via in vitro polymerization aided by synthetic models and detailed structural studies.
