Comparison of the Isothermal Oxidation Behavior of As-Cast Cu-17%Cr and Cu-17%Cr-5%Al: Oxidation Kinetics - Part 1

The isothermal oxidation kinetics of as-cast Cu-17%Cr and Cu-17%Cr-5%Al in air were studied between 773 and 1173 K under atmospheric pressure. These observations reveal that Cu- 17%Cr-5%Al oxidizes at significantly slower rates than Cu-17%Cr. The rate constants for the alloys were determined from generalized analyses of the data without an a priori assumption of the nature of the oxidation kinetics. Detailed analyses of the isothermal thermogravimetric weight change data revealed that Cu-17%Cr exhibited parabolic oxidation kinetics with an activation energy of 165.9 9.5 kJ mol-1. In contrast, the oxidation kinetics for the Cu-17%Cr- 5%Al alloy exhibited a parabolic oxidation kinetics during the initial stages followed by a quartic relationship in the later stages of oxidation. Alternatively, the oxidation behavior of Cu-17%CR- 5%Al could be better represented by a logarithmic relationship. The parabolic rate constants and activation energy data for the two alloys are compared with literature data to gain insights on the nature of the oxidation mechanisms dominant in these alloys.

An Analysis of the Internal Truth Files for a CAST 4000 GPS Simulator for Two Rocket Launches and One Weather Balloon Flight

The CAST GPS 4000 simulator can create scenarios using external trajectories. The following information must be provided: time from a given epoch (a constant sampling rate must be used); position, velocity and acceleration in Earth Centered Earth Fixed (ECEF) coordinates; elements of the matrix that transforms from the body-axis coordinate system to the ECEF frame; and the angular velocity of the body-axis system relative to ECEF coordinates. The initial latitude, longitude, altitude, and UTC time must also be provided during the scenario setup. The simulator recomputes the positions and velocities using the given accelerations and a constant jerk model. The results are the internal "truth file".

Impact Toughness and Heat Treatment for Cast Aluminum

A method for transforming a cast component made of modified aluminum alloy by increasing the impact toughness coefficient using minimal heat and energy. The aluminum alloy is modified to contain 0.55%-0.60% magnesium, 0.10%-0.15% titanium or zirconium, less than 0.07% iron, a silicon-tomagnesium product ratio of 4.0, and less than 0.15% total impurities. The shortened heat treatment requires an initial heating at 1,000deg F. for up to I hour followed by a water quench and a second heating at 350deg F. to 390deg F. for up to I hour. An optional short bake paint cycle or powder coating process further increase.

Low Pressure Flame Blowoff from the Forward Stagnation Region of a Blunt-Nosed Cast PMMA Cylinder in Axial Mixed Convective Flow

Low-pressure blowoff experiments were conducted with a stagnation flame stabilized on the forward tip of cast PMMA rods in a vertical wind tunnel. Pressure, forced flow velocity, gravity, and ambient oxygen concentration were varied. Stagnation flame blowoff is determined from a time-stamped video recording of the test. The blowoff pressure is determined from test section pressure transducer data that is synchronized with the time stamp. The forced flow velocity is also determined from the choked flow orifice pressure. Most of the tests were performed in normal gravity, but a handful of microgravity tests were also conducted to determine the influence of buoyant flow velocity on the blowoff limits. The blowoff limits are found to have a linear dependence between the partial pressure of oxygen and the total pressure, regardless of forced flow velocity and gravity level. The flow velocity (forced and/or buoyant) affects the blowoff pressure through the critical Damkohler number residence time, which dictates the partial pressure of oxygen at blowoff. This is because the critical stretch rate increases linearly with increasing pressure at low pressure (sub-atmospheric pressures) since a second-order overall reaction rate with two-body reactions dominates in this pressure range.

Systems and Methods for Fabricating Structures Including Metallic Glass-Based Materials Using Low Pressure Casting

Systems and methods to fabricate objects including metallic glass-based materials using low-pressure casting techniques are described. In one embodiment, a method of fabricating an object that includes a metallic glass-based material includes: introducing molten alloy into a mold cavity defined by a mold using a low enough pressure such that the molten alloy does not conform to features of the mold cavity that are smaller than 100 microns; and cooling the molten alloy such that it solidifies, the solid including a metallic glass-based material.

The Role of Alerting System Failures in Loss of Control Accidents CAST SE-210 Output 2

This report is part of a series of reports that address flight deck design and evaluation, written as a response to loss of control accidents. In particular, this activity is directed at failures in airplane state awareness in which the pilot loses awareness of the airplane's energy state or attitude and enters an upset condition. In a report by the Commercial Aviation Safety Team, an analysis of accidents and incidents related to loss of airplane state awareness determined that hazard alerting was not effective in producing the appropriate pilot response to a hazard (CAST, 2014). In the current report, we take a detailed look at 28 airplane state awareness accidents and incidents to determine how well the hazard alerting worked. We describe a five-step integrated alerting-to-recovery sequence that prescribes how hazard alerting should lead to effective flight crew actions for managing the hazard. Then, for each hazard in each of the 28 events, we determine if that sequence failed and, if so, how it failed. The results show that there was an alerting failure in every one of the 28 safety events, and that the most frequent failure (20/28) was tied to the flight crew not orienting to (not being aware of) the hazard. The discussion section summarizes findings and identifies alerting issues that are being addressed and issues that are not currently being addressed. We identify a few recent upgrades that have addressed certain alerting failures. Two of these upgrades address alerting design, but one response to the safety events is to upgrade training for approach to stall and stall recovery. We also describe issues that are not being addressed adequately: better alert integration for flight path management types of hazards, airplanes in the fleet that do not meet the current alerting regulations, a lack of innovation for addressing cases of channelized attention, and existing vulnerabilities in managing data validity.

On the Corrosion Response of Novel Heat Exchangers Manufactured by Casting of Al-Ce-Mg Alloy

Developing low-cost and durable heat exchangers is critical for next-generation heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. The emerging requirement to minimize the total refrigerant charge inventory while ensuring a uniform distribution of refrigerant has led to the deployment of advanced manufacturing strategies. At the same time, corrosion is a longstanding issue for metal components, especially those used in heat exchanger (HX) applications. In this study, Al-Ce-Mg alloy-based HXs have been investigated. The corrosion resistance of HXs prototype manufactured by the casting process has been examined and the potential of a new manufacturing approach has been explored to meet the requirements of emerging needs.

Increasing melt efficiency and secondary alloy usage in aluminum die casting

In this project, the focus was to develop thermodynamic and kinetic models for the aluminum melting process involving secondary alloys, refractory materials and flux materials. The major research outcome of this study is 1) the refractory composition of CaO (8-12%), microsilica (1-3%), BaSO 4 and/or BaO (no more than 5%), B 2 O 3 (5%) and Al 2 O 3 (balance) effectively reduced the reactions with liquid Al and alloying/impurity elements and heat transfer during melting and holding process. 2) a flux composition of NaCl-KCl-(1-10%)KAlF 4 exhibited an effective covering effect and prevented the dross formation during melting of Al process. 3) A high Fe (0.44%) content recycled Al alloy with compatible mechanical properties was developed based on the impurities control methods, which provides great potential to replace the commercial structural alloys from primary Al and increase the usage of secondary alloys.
