Residual estimation for grid modification in wall-modeled large eddy simulation using unstructured high-order methods

Here, the accuracy and computational cost of a large eddy simulation are highly dependent on the computational grid. Building optimal grids manually from a priori knowledge is not feasible in most practical use cases; instead, solution-adaptive strategies can provide a robust and cost-efficient method to generate a grid with the desired accuracy. We adapt the residual estimation algorithm developed by Toosi and Larsson for Discontinuous Galerkin Spectral Elements Methods (DGSEM) to guide the grid-adaptation process. The core of the method is the computation of the estimated modeling residual using the polynomial basis functions used in DGSEM, and the averaging of the estimated residual over each element. The final method is assessed in multiple channel flow test cases and for the transonic flow over an airfoil, in both cases making use of mortar interfaces between elements with hanging nodes. The method is found to be robust and reliable, and to provide solutions on grids with significantly fewer elements at comparable accuracy compared to when using human-generated grids.

Scatter and Blur Corrections for High-Energy X-Ray Radiography

High-energy X-ray radiography is useful as a highly penetrating method for imaging through dense materials. However, the primary modes of interaction of X-rays at these energies involve scattering or the production of secondary high-energy photons, which can interfere with the image. In addition, detector blurring, often resulting from scatter within the detector, can reduce image sharpness. Both of these processes can be mitigated with the use of convolution kernels, with the main challenge being that the proper kernel to use is not known, particularly for the scatter contribution. By radiographing solid slabs of uniform attenuation, we show that point spread functions and material-specific point scatter functions can be determined to significantly reduce the effect of detector blurring and object scatter. Constraining the fits to the slabs and uniform transmission within the slabs is sufficient to recover these functions. A functional form that reproduces the angular distribution of high-energy bremsstrahlung X-rays is presented for recovering point scatter functions. In conclusion, the method is applied to radiographs of objects from bremsstrahlung X-ray sources operating at 4- and 7.5-MV endpoint energies and a significant increase in sharpness is observed.

A Contextually Supervised Optimization-Based HVAC Load Disaggregation Methodology

This paper presents a novel contextually supervised optimization-based approach for disaggregating heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) loads using smart meter or Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition data. To disaggregate the load into HVAC loads, large and infrequently used loads (LIUL), and base loads, we formulate an optimization problem to minimize a set of five loss terms, consisting of the reconstruction errors of the overall load profile, the ramp rate losses, and three distinct loss functions linked with the HVAC load, base load, and LIUL, respectively. To enhance accuracy, we incorporate two forms of contextual information into the problem formulation. First, we utilize mutual information to estimate HVAC energy consumption. Second, we employ a base load dictionary to constrain HVAC load estimation errors. The obtained HVAC load profiles are fine-tuned by abnormal ramp detection followed by binary hypothesis testing. Here, the proposed method is developed and tested using sub-metered residential and commercial building data. Simulation results show that the proposed method outperforms existing methods across various data resolutions and load aggregation levels, showing excellent transferability and generalizability.

Chemistry of the thermal water samples of the Camas Prairie area in Idaho, USA

This dataset includes chemistry of geothermal water samples of the Camas Prairie area in Idaho. The samples included in this dataset were collected over the period of 2016-2019. Collection/analysis of new water samples and compilation of existing water chemistry database were conducted for Snake River Play Fairway Project. All chemical analysis of the samples were conducted in the Analytical Laboratory at the Center of Advanced Energy Studies (unless otherwise indicated) in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Isotope analysis were conducted in analytical/isotope measurement labs at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Utah State University, and University of Utah.

Play Fairway Analysis Retrospective GeoRePORTs

NREL, as part of the Play Fairway Analysis (PFA) Retrospective and with assistance from PFA PIs, completed GeoRePORTs for the sites identified in Phases 1&2 of the DOE PFA projects. The GeoRePORT (geothermal resource portfolio optimization and reporting technique) uses two factors to describe a specific project; grade and project readiness level. Grade describes the quality or potential of a project while project readiness level shows the progress of research and development. The categories that factor into the total grades and readiness levels are Geological, Technical, and Socio-Economic.

Upper-air soundings collected during the CROCUS Urban Canyons 2024 campaign in Chicago, Illinois USA

Funded by the Department of Energy’s Office of Science, Biological and Environmental Research program, Community Research on Climate and Urban Science (CROCUS) studies urban climate change and the impact it has on communities, with particular focus on disinvested, under-resourced communities. This information leads to new insights on urban climate challenges and informs future actions for mitigating and adapting to climate change at the street, neighborhood and regional levels. As part of the CROCUS effort, the Urban Canyons 2024 project was undertaken to study conditions at unprecedented detail over various neighborhoods in Chicago, Illinois. This dataset consists of upper air soundings that were collected as part of this effort. Soundings were launched during two intensive observing periods, IOP1 occurred on 22-23 July 2024, while IOP2 occurred on 27-28 July 2024. For IOP1, soundings were launched at coordinated times from three sites, Shedd Aquarium in Downtown Chicago, Abizu Campus High School in Humboldt Park, and Gary Comer Youth Center in West Woodlawn. For IOP2, the Gary Comer site was replaced by a neighborhood site in West Woodlawn, Chicago. The Abizu Campos site was operated by Valparaiso University and used iMET-4 rawinsondes, the other sites were operated by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and used GRAW DFM-19 sondes. This dataset contains netCDF files containing quality-controlled temperature, dewpoint, geopotential height, pressure, and vector wind measurements at 1 second intervals following launch. These files are readable by the open-source netCDF software libraries available in many software packages (i.e., python, R, fortran, C++, etc.). The dataset also contains quicklook plots of each launch on a skew-T log-p thermodynamic diagram. These are in png format viewable by most web browsers.
