Constraints on resolving meso-alpha and meso-beta phenomena using a space-based Doppler lidar wind profiler

Lidar shot management and wind computation algorithms are used to determine the constraints on resolving mesoscale (alpha and beta) wind fields. Examples of simulated Doppler lidar performance in resolving wind gradient features are presented using currently proposed scan and signal processing parameters, and GCM model outputs are used as input wind fields. Results indicate that with the present constraints on lidar lifetime, scan rates, and orbit altitudes, the limits of mesoscale wind feature resolution are close to wavelengths of 100 km.

Further observations of SCC in alpha-beta brass Considerations regarding the appearance of crack arrest markings during SCC

A series of constant displacement and constant extension rate stress corrosion cracking (SCC) tests was performed on an alpha-beta brass alloy in 1 N Na2SO4 solutions. The chosen mechanical and electrochemical conditions resulted in predominantly transgranular, cleavage-like failure at high (about 8 to 50 microns/s) average crack propagation rates. Crack arrest markings were observed on selected transgranular facets, which almost exclusively bordered regions of ductile overload failure. It is proposed that the observed crack velocities and the specific nature of the arrest mark appearance are most consistent with a cracking mechanism involving adsorption or some other interaction with a damaging environmental species.

Antiphase boundaries in epitaxially grown beta-SiC

When the surface of beta-SiC, grown epitaxially on (001) silicon by chemical vapor deposition, is chemically etched, boundaries appear which may be observed by optical or scanning electron microscopy. Examination by plan-view and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy shows boundaries in the film which exhibit line or fringe contrast. Convergent beam electron diffraction has been used to show that these boundaries separate domains that are in an antiphase relationship to each other. A model is presented which discusses the formation of these domains from independent nucleation on a stepped substrate surface.

Pioneer 10 observations of the Beta Cephei stars Gamma Pegasi and Delta Ceti

The results of analyzing broad-band Pioneer 10 photometric observations of the low-amplitude pulsating Beta Cephei stars Gamma Pegasi and Delta Ceti are reported. Periods and light curve amplitudes of 3.649 + or - 0.020 hr, 0.05 + or - 0.02 mag for Gamma Peg and 3.869 + or - 0.020 hr, 0.13 + or - 0.02 mag for Delta Ceti are obtained; a power spectrum analysis of the data reveals no other periods. No evidence is found for a phase shift between the light curve maxima in the UV and visible regions. The observed amplitudes combined with published visual and near-UV data suggest a flux and temperature variability of about 200 solar luminosities and 250 K for Gamma Peg and about 600 solar luminosities and 450 K for Delta Cet. These results are compared with others obtained with satellite and ground-based instrumentation.

TEM investigation of beta-SiC grown epitaxially on Si substrate by CVD

A transmission electron microscopy study is being conducted on the microstructure of beta-SiC films grown epitaxially on 001-plane silicon by chemical vapor deposition. Observations have been made in plain view and in cross-section. A high density of stacking faults has been found in the bulk of the epilayer which are bounded by partials of the Shockley type with Burgers vectors 1/6 211-line. Cross-sectional high resolution electron microscopy of the interface has shown it to be semicoherent with misfit dislocations to accommodate the lattice parameter difference between the substrate and the epilayer. In addition to misfit dislocations, a high density of twins and some stacking faults are present in the SiC near the interface. Mechanisms for the nucleation and growth of these defects are discussed.

Simulation of amplitude-modulated circularly polarized Alfven waves for beta less than one

The nonlinear properties of the amplitude-modulated circularly polarized Alfven wave are studied for beta less than one. The temporal behavior of the wave packet of the electromagnetic hybrid simulation is compared with a numerical solution of the derivative nonlinear Schroedinger (DNLS) equation. It is shown that the left-hand-polarized mode evolves into a shocklike structure due to the modulational instability. However, both cyclotron damping and a snowplow effect near the steepened wave packet suppress its further steepening, contrary to the predictions of the DNLS equation. For the right-hand mode, formation of the shock does not take place, and the initial time development is well described by the DNLS equation. The daughter Alfven wave and ion acoustic waves are excited due to the decay instability at a later time. Heating or acceleration of the particles takes place for both left- and right-hand waves. Energy transfer from the wave to the particles occurs effectively when substantial modulation in the wave amplitude is present.

A calorimetric determination of the enthalpy of formation and a description of the defect structure of the ordered beta-phase /Ni, Cu/ /1-x/ Al/x/

In order to describe thermodynamically the defect structure of an ordered B-Hume-Rothery phase, the heat of formation of (Ni,Cu)(1-x)Al(x) was measured at 1100 K as a function of concentration in the range x (sub Al) = 0.4 and 0.55 for three substitution rations x (sub Ni)/x (sub Cu) = infinity; 11; 5. The heat of formation of the NiAl beta-phase is strongly negative. For the stoichiometric composition it is -72.2 kJ/g-atom. On both the nickel-rich side and the aluminum-rich side the magnitude of the enthalpy of formation decreases linearly with concentration. Substitution of nickel for copper decreases the magnitude of the enthalpy of formation over the entire homogeneity range for the phase (Ni,Cu)(1-x)Al(x). The curve for the enthalpy of formation as well as the literature values for the chemical potential of aluminum are described with great accuracy by the disorder model of Wagner-Schottky.

The ultraviolet spectrum of Beta Lyrae

The high-resolution UV spectrum of Beta Lyrae observed with the IUE satellite between 1980 and 1986 is analyzed. A complete list of line identifications for the entire spectral range of the IUE (1225-3125 A) is presented. The main spectral features are P Cygni profiles of resonance lines of high ionization states typical of stellar winds, some of which are combined with a broad emission feature due probably to an accretion disk; P Cygni profiles due to moderately ionized atoms in the iron group (mostly Fe III and Ni III); and absorption lines of elements in lower ionization stages, such as S II, Si II (higher multiplets), Ni II, and a large number of Fe II lines.

Lattice defects in beta-SiC grown epitaxially on silicon substrates

Defects generated on beta-SiC grown on a (001) silicon substrate by chemical vapor deposition are characterized and their mechanism of formation discussed. It is argued that nucleation plays a primary role in this heteroepitaxial system where the lattice mismatch is so large.

Microscopy of epitaxially grown beta-SiC on 001-plane silicon

Various defects occurring in epitaxially grown layers of beta-SiC are characterized by TEM, and the mechanisms of growth and defect formation are discussed. In particular, attention is given to the following types of defects: misfit dislocations, interfacial twins, antiphase boundaries, threading dislocations, and wide stacking faults. Details of the experimental procedure are given.

A study of the continuum flux and the line structure in the IUE spectrum of Beta Lyrae

A study of the available archival IUE images of Beta Lyrae has led to the following results: (1) for lambda in the range of 1250 - 1500 A, the eclipse depth at second conjunction is slightly larger than the eclipse depth at primary conjunction; they are equal at about 1670 A; (2) the profiles of the resonance lines of SiIV (and the same seems to be true for NV and CIV) can be described as composite, formed by the superposition of a stationary P Cygni profile that suggests a velocity of approach of -170 km/s and a broad, less strong, emission that seems to yield a velocity distribution in antiphase with the velocity curve of the B8 II component of the system; and (3) the emission lines of the intercombination doublet of semiforbidden N II at about 2140 A suggest a velocity of about -130 km/s. The interpretation of the latter composite profile appears similar to the one suggested by Sahade (1966) to describe H-alpha and He I 5876 and He I 6678, and by Batten and Sahade (1973) to describe H-alpha.

Synthetic uvby-beta photometry of HD 12856 and HD 13890

Stromgren and H-beta colors have been measured from spectrophotometric observations of two Be stars without published photometry in Per OB1: HD 12856 (B0 pe) and HD 13890 (B1 III:pe). Stellar parameters and improved spectral types are then derived from the color indices and the calibrations of Jakobsen (1986). These are compared with the parameters of normal B stars and are used to estimate the evolutionary status of the stars.

Resolution of the circumstellar disk of Beta Pictoris at 10 and 20 microns

Observations at 10 and 20 microns with about 5 arcsec resolution are presented of the central, approximately 13 arcsec diameter region of the A5 dwarf Beta Pictoris. These observations resolve the inner disk and provide important constraints for models of the star and a basis for removing some of their ambiguities. The evidence indicates that submicron-sized grains emit much of the excess 10 and 20 micron radiation from the star. The characteristics of the dust are discussed, and the possibility that comets form the dust reservoir is considered.

The location of the Ca II ions in the beta Pictoris disk

Echelle spectra of beta Pictoris have been obtained in the region of the Ca II 8542A line which arises from the metastable 3d 2D5/2 level. A narrow, weak, circumstellar absorption line is seen at the stellar radial velocity. A simple theory is developed of the radiative pumping of the metastable levels of the Ca II ions by the radiation from the star at the H and K lines. The relatively large fractional population, N3(Ca II)/N1(Ca II) of roughly 0.05, observed for the metastable level then requires that the calcium absorbers be largely concentrated within about 1 AU of the star. This result confirms two previous, independent estimates of the location of this gas. A time-variable circumstellar component of the 8542A line also is found at an infall velocity of about 15 km/s.

Clenbuterol, a beta(2)-agonist, retards atrophy in denervated muscles

The effects of a beta(2) agonist, clenbuterol, on the protein content as well as on the contractile strength and the muscle fiber cross-sectional area of various denervated muscles from rats were investigated. It was found that denervated soleus, anterior tibialis, and gastrocnemius muscles, but not the extensor digitorum longus, of rats treated for 2-3 weeks with clenbuterol contained 95-110 percent more protein than denervated controls. The twofold difference in the protein content of denervated solei was paralleled by similar changes in contractile strength and muscle fiber cross-sectional area.

Effect of 0.1 at. pct Zirconium on the cyclic oxidation resistance of beta-NiAl

The effect of 0.1 at. pct Zr on the cyclic oxidation of hipped beta-NiAl was studied. Oxidation testing was performed in static air at 1100-1200 C, using 1-hr exposure cycles for test times up to 3000 hr. The weight change versus time data were modeled with the COSP computer program to analyze and predict cyclic-oxidation behavior. Zr additions significantly change the nature of the scale-spalling process during cooling, so that the oxide spalls near the oxide-air interface at a relatively low depth within the scale. Without Zr, the predominantly alpha-Al2O3 scale tends to spall randomly to bare metal at relatively high effective-scale-loss rates, particularly at 1150 C and 1200 C. This leads to higher rates of Al consumption for the Zr-free aluminide and much earlier depletion of Al, leading to eventual breakaway (i.e., failure).

A study of native oxides of beta-SiC using Auger electron spectroscopy

Thermal and anodic oxide films of beta-SiC are analyzed using Auger electron spectroscopy. Auger depth-composition profiles are obtained in order to determine the chemical composition of the oxide films. The position and shape of silicon spectral peaks are used to estimate the chemical bonding of the oxide constituents. It is found that the wet thermal oxide is almost stoichiometric but contains about 14 pct C. Dry oxide, on the other hand, has less than 3 pct C but is highly nonstoichiometric. The C content in the anodic oxide is 12 pct. Anodic oxide films, like dry-oxide films, are nonstoichiometric. A model of the SiC oxidation process is presented.

Thermoelastic micromechanical stresses associated with a large alpha-silicon carbide grain in a polycrystalline beta-silicon carbide matrix

The thermoelastic micromechanical stresses associated with a single large hexagonal alpha-SiC grain within a fine-grain-size cubic (3C) beta-SiC matrix were calculated. The naturally occurring residual stresses which are created during cooling from the processing temperatures and the effects of superimposed applied external stresses are both considered. A significant effect of the shape or geometry of the alpha-SiC grain is revealed, with the largest residual stresses associated with the naturally occurring tabular or platelet structure. The stresses are compared with the published strength results for these materials, which suggests that the residual stresses assume a significant role in the strength reduction that is observed.
