Strongly anisotropic antiferromagnetic coupling in EuFe 2 As 2 revealed by stress detwinning

Of all parent compounds of iron-based high-temperature superconductors, EuFe 2 As 2 exhibits by far the largest magnetostructural coupling due to the sizable biquadratic interaction between Eu and Fe moments. While the coupling between Eu antiferromagnetic order and Fe structural/antiferromagnetic domains enables rapid field detwinning, this prevents simple magnetometry measurements from extracting the critical fields of the Eu metamagnetic transitions. Furthermore we measure these critical fields by combining x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy with in-situ tunable uniaxial stress and applied magnetic field. The combination of two tuning knobs allows us to separate the stressdetwinning of structural domains from the field-induced reorientation of Eu moments. Intriguingly, from the critical field values we find that the Eu interplanar interaction is strongly anisotropic. We argue that this anisotropic exchange term is likely a consequence of the strong anisotropy in the magnetically ordered Fe layer, which highlights the non-trivial interplay between Eu-Fe magnetism in this system.

Universal fluctuating regime in triangular chromate antiferromagnets

In this work, we report x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and muon spin relaxation (μSR) measurements, as well as density-functional band-structure calculations for the frustrated S=3/2 triangular lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet (TLHAF) α-HCrO 2 (trigonal, space group: $R\bar{3}m$). This compound undergoes a clear magnetic transition at T N ≃22.5 K, as seen from the drop in the muon paramagnetic fraction and concurrent anomalies in the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat capacity. Local probes (NMR and μSR) reveal a broad regime with slow fluctuations down to 0.7T N , this temperature corresponding to the maximum in the μSR relaxation rate and in the NMR wipe-out. From the comparison with NaCrO 2 and α-KCrO 2 , the fluctuating regime and slow dynamics below T N appear to be hallmarks of the TLHAF with ABC stacking. We discuss the role of interlayer frustration, which may have impacted recent spin-liquid candidates with triangular geometry.

Antiferromagnetic character of the quantum phase transition in the Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice

In this work we provide a unified, comprehensive treatment of all operators that contribute to the antiferromagnetic, ferromagnetic, and charge-density-wave structure factors and order parameters of the hexagonal Hubbard Model. We use the Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm to perform a systematic, carefully controlled analysis in the temporal Trotter error and of the thermodynamic limit. We expect our findings to improve the consistency of Monte Carlo determinations of critical exponents. We perform a data collapse analysis and determine the critical exponent β = 0.898 (37) for the semimetal-Mott insulator transition in the hexagonal Hubbard Model. Our methods are applicable to a wide range of lattice theories of strongly correlated electrons.

Three-dimensional stacking of canted antiferromagnetism and pseudospin current in undoped Sr 2 IrO 4 : Symmetry analysis and microscopic model realization

Recent optical second-harmonic generation experiments observed unexpected broken spatial symmetries in the undoped spin-orbit Mott insulator Sr2 IrO4, leading to intensive debates on the nature of its ground state. Here we propose that it is a canted antiferromagnetism (CAF) with a hidden order of circulating staggered pseudospin current. Symmetry analysis shows that a proper c-axis stacking of the CAF and the pseudospin current lead to a magnetoelectric coexistence state that breaks the twofold rotation, inversion, and time-reversal symmetries, consistent with experimental observations. We construct a three-dimensional Hubbard model with spin-orbit coupling and structural distortion for the five localized 5d Wannier orbitals centered at Ir sites and demonstrate the microscopic realization of the desired coexistence state in a wide range of band parameters via a combination of self-consistent Hartree-Fock and variational calculations.

Static and dynamic magnetic properties of honeycomb lattice antiferromagnets Na 2 M 2 TeO 6 , M = Co and Ni

The magnetic structures and spin dynamics of Na 2 CO 2 TeO 6 and Na 2 Ni 2 TeO 6 are investigated by means of elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements and the results are discussed in the context of a generalized Kitaev-Heisenberg model on a honeycomb lattice with strong spin-orbit coupling. The large number of parameters involved in the Hamiltonian model is evaluated by using an iterative optimization algorithm capable of extracting model solutions and simultaneously estimating their uncertainty. The analyses indicate that both Co 2+ (d 7 ) and Ni 2+ (d 8 ) antiferromagnets realize bond-dependent anisotropic nearest-neighbor interactions and support the theoretical predictions for the realization of Kitaev physics in 3 d electron systems with effective spins S = 1/2 and 1. By studying the Na-doped system Na 2.4 Ni 2 TeO 6 , we show that the control of Na content can provide an effective route for fine-tuning the magnetic lattice dimensionality, as well as to controlling the bond-dependent anisotropic interactions.

Magnetic structure and exchange interactions in the Heisenberg pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd 2 Pt 2 O 7

In this report the Heisenberg pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd 2 Pt 2 O 7 is one of a series of gadolinium pyrochlore compounds with a variety of B-site cations. Despite the expected simplicity of a spin-only Gd 3+ Heisenberg interaction model, the gadolinium pyrochlore series exhibits various complex magnetic ground states at low temperature. Gd 2 Pt 2 O 7 displays the highest temperature magnetic order of the series with $T_N$=1.6 K, which has been attributed to enhanced superexchange pathways facilitated by empty $5d$ $e_g$ Pt orbitals. In this study, we use various neutron scattering techniques on an isotopically enriched polycrystalline 160 Gd 2 Pt 2 O 7 sample to examine the magnetic structure and spin-wave excitation spectrum below $T_N$ in order to extract the dominant exchange interactions. We find that the ground-state magnetic structure is the Palmer-Chalker state previously seen in Gd 2 Sn 2 O 7 with an associated gapped excitation spectrum consistent with enhanced exchange interactions between further near-neighbor Gd 3+ ions. We confirm this exchange model with analysis of the magnetic diffuse scattering in the paramagnetic regime using polarized neutrons.

Coexistence of non-Abelian chiral spin liquid and magnetic order in a spin-1 antiferromagnet

We study the ground-state properties of a spin-1 Heisenberg model on a square lattice with the first- and second-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings $J_1$ and $J_2$ and a three-spin scalar chirality term $J_\chi$. Using the density matrix renormalization group calculation, we map out a global phase diagram including various magnetic order phases and an emergent quantum spin liquid phase. The nature of the spin liquid is identified as a bosonic non-Abelian Moore-Read state from the fingerprint of the entanglement spectra and identification of a full set of topological sectors. We further unveil a stripe magnetic order coexisting with this spin liquid. Furthermore, our results not only establish a rare example of non-Abelian spin liquids in simple spin systems but also demonstrate the coexistence of fractionalized excitations and magnetic order beyond mean-field descriptions.

Large anomalous Hall effect induced by weak ferromagnetism in the noncentrosymmetric antiferromagnet CoNb 3 S 6

We study the mechanism of the exceptionally large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the noncentrosymmetric antiferromagnet CoNb 3 S 6 by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and magnetotransport measurements. From ARPES measurements of CoNb 3 S 6 and its family compounds (FeNb 3 S 6 and CoNb 3 S 6 ), we find a band dispersion unique to the Co intercalation existing near the Fermi level. We further demonstrate that a slight deficiency of sulfur in CoNb 3 S 6 eliminates the ferromagnetism and the AHE simultaneously while hardly changing the band structure, indicating that the weak ferromagnetism is responsible for the emergence of the large AHE. Based on our results, we propose Weyl points near the Fermi level to cause the large AHE.

Anticollinear order and degeneracy lifting in square lattice antiferromagnet LaSrCrO 4

In this work, we report the static and dynamic magnetic properties of LaSrCrO 4 , a seemingly canonical spin-3/2 square-lattice antiferromagnet that exhibits frustration between magnetic layers—owing to their AB stacking—and offers a rare testbed to investigate accidental-degeneracy lifting in magnetism. Neutron diffraction experiments on single-crystal samples uncover a remarkable anticollinear magnetic order below T N = 170 K characterized by a Néel arrangement of the spins within each layer and an orthogonal arrangement between adjacent layers. To understand the origin of this unusual magnetic structure, we analyze the spin-wave excitation spectrum by means of inelastic neutron scattering and bulk measurements. A spectral gap of 0.5 meV, along with a spin-flop transition at 3.2 T, reflect the energy scale associated with the degeneracy-lifting. A minimal model to explain these observations requires both a positive biquadratic interlayer exchange and dipolar interactions, both of which are on the order of 10 –4 meV, only a few parts per million of the dominant exchange interaction J 1 ≈11 meV. These results provide direct evidence for the selection of a noncollinear magnetic structure by the combined effect of two distinct degeneracy lifting interactions.

Possible coexistence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic spin fluctuations in the spin-triplet superconductor UTe 2 revealed by 125 Te NMR under pressure

We report a spin-triplet superconducting state mediated by ferromagnetic (FM) spin fluctuations has been suggested to occur in the newly discovered heavy-fermion superconductor UTe 2 . However, the recent neutron scattering measurements revealed the presence of antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin fluctuations in UTe 2 . Here, we report the 125 Te nuclear magnetic resonance studies of a single-crystal UTe 2 , suggesting the coexistence of FM and AFM spin fluctuations in UTe 2 . Owing to the two different Te sites in the compound, we conclude that the FM spin fluctuations are dominant within ladders and the AFM spin fluctuations originate from the interladder magnetic coupling. Although AFM spin fluctuations exist in the system, the FM spin fluctuations in the ladders may play an important role in the appearance of the spin-triplet superconducting state of UTe 2 .

Canted antiferromagnetic phases in the candidate layered Weyl material EuMnSb 2

EuMnSb 2 is a candidate topological material which can be tuned towards a Weyl semimetal, but there are differing reports for its antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases. The coupling of bands dominated by pure Sb layers hosting topological fermions to Mn and Eu magnetic states provides a potential path to tune the topological properties. In this study we present single-crystal neutron diffraction, magnetization, and heat-capacity data as well as polycrystalline 151 Eu Mössbauer data which show that three AFM phases exist as a function of temperature, and we present a detailed analysis of the magnetic structure in each phase. The Mn magnetic sublattice orders into a C-type AFM structure below T N Mn = 323 (1) K with the ordered Mn magnetic moment μ Mn lying perpendicular to the layers. AFM ordering of the Eu sublattice occurs below T N Eu1 = 23 (1) K with the ordered Eu magnetic moment μ Eu canted away from the layer normal and μ Mn retaining its higher temperature order. μ Eu is ferromagnetically aligned within each Eu layer but exhibits a complicated AFM layer stacking. Both of these higher-temperature phases are described by magnetic space group (MSG) $\mathcal{Pn'm'a'}$ with the chemical and magnetic unit cells having the same dimensions. Cooling below T N Eu2 =9 (1) K reveals a third AFM phase where μ Mn remains unchanged but μ Eu develops an additional substantial in-plane canting. This phase has MSG $\mathcal{P11}$ $\frac{2_1}{a′}$. We also find some evidence of short-range magnetic correlations associated with the Eu between 12 K≲ T≲ 30 K . Using the determined magnetic structures, we postulate the signs of nearest-neighbor intralayer and interlayer exchange constants and the magnetic anisotropy within a general Heisenberg model. We then discuss implications of the various AFM states in EuMnSb 2 and their potential for tuning topological properties.

Surface and electronic structure at atomic length scales of the nonsymmorphic antiferromagnet Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6

We performed scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS) measurements to investigate the Zintl phase Eu 5 ⁢In 2 ⁢Sb 6 , a nonsymmorphic antiferromagnet. The theoretical prediction of a nontrivial Fermi surface topology stabilized by the nonsymmorphic symmetry motivated our research. On the cleaved (010) plane, we obtained striped patterns that can be correlated to the stacking of the [In 2 ⁢Sb 6 ] 10- double chains along the crystallographic c axis. The attempted cleavage along the a axis revealed a more complex pattern. We combined the STS measurement on nonreconstructed (010) and (081) surfaces with DFT calculations to further elucidate the electronic structure of Eu 5 ⁢In 2 ⁢Sb 6 . From our investigations so far, direct experimental evidence of the predicted topological surface states remains elusive.

Rare-earth monopnictides: Family of antiferromagnets hosting magnetic Fermi arcs

We report since the discovery of topological insulators a great deal of research effort has been devoted to magnetic topological materials, in which nontrivial spin properties can be controlled by magnetic fields, culminating in a wealth of fundamental phenomena and possible applications. The main focus was on ferromagnetic materials that can host Weyl fermions and therefore spin-textured Fermi arcs. The recent discovery of Fermi arcs and new magnetic band splitting in the antiferromagnet (AFM) NdBi has opened up new avenues for exploration. Here we show that these uncharted effects are not restricted to this specific compound, but also emerge in CeBi and NdSb when they undergo paramagnetic to AFM transition. Our data show that the Fermi arcs in NdSb have twofold symmetry, leading to strong anisotropy that may enhance effects of spin textures on transport properties. Our findings thus demonstrate that the RBi and RSb series are materials that host magnetic Fermi arcs and may be a potential platform for modern spintronics.

Strain-induced orbital-energy shift in antiferromagnetic RuO 2 revealed by resonant elastic x-ray scattering

In its ground state, RuO 2 was long thought to be an ordinary metallic paramagnet. Recent neutron and x-ray diffraction revealed that bulk RuO 2 is an antiferromagnet with T N above 300 K. Furthermore, epitaxial strain induces superconductivity in thin films of RuO 2 below 2 K. Here, we present a resonant elastic x-ray scattering study at the Ru L 2 edge of the strained RuO 2 films exhibiting the strain-induced superconductivity. Here, we observe an azimuthal modulation of the 100 Bragg peak consistent with bulk. Most notably, in the strained films displaying superconductivity, we observe a ~ 1 eV shift of the Ru e g orbitals to a higher energy. The energy shift is smaller in thicker, relaxed films and films with a different strain direction. Our results provide further evidence of the utility of epitaxial strain as a tuning parameter in complex oxides.

Magnetic structure and spin dynamics of the quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet Zn-doped copper pyrovanadate

We report magnetic properties of the antiferromagnet Zn x Cu 2-x V 2 O 7 (ZnCVO) with x ≈ 0.06 have been thoroughly investigated on powder and single-crystal samples. The crystal structure determination using powder x-ray and neutron diffraction confirms that our ZnCVO samples are isostructural with β-Cu 2 V 2 O 7 (β-CVO) with a small deviation in the lattice parameters. Macroscopic magnetic property measurements also confirm the similarity between the two compounds. The Cu 2+ spins were found to align along the crystallographic c axis, antiparallel to their nearest neighbors connected by the leading exchange interaction J 1 . Spin dynamics reveals a typical symmetric spin-wave dispersion with strong interactions in the bc plane and weak interplane coupling. The exchange interaction analysis indicates that the spin network of ZnCVO is topologically consistent with the previous DFT prediction but the values of leading exchange interactions are contradictory. Furthermore, rather than the predicted 2D honeycomb structure, the spin network in ZnCVO could be better described by the anisotropic 2D spin network composed of J 1 , J 5 , and J 6 interactions, four bonds per one spin site, coupled by weak interplane interactions.

Topological antiferromagnetic semimetal for spintronics: A case study of a layered square-net system EuZnSb 2

Here, we use the first-principles and effective Hamiltonian methods to study the electronic structure and magnetic properties of a recently synthesized layered antiferromagnetic square-net topological semimetal EuZnSb2 [Phys. Rev. Res. 2, 033462 (2020)]. The main message of the paper is that effects of small changes in the band structure produced by the magnetic ordering and changes in the orientation of the Néel vector are amplified in such transport properties as the spin Hall conductivity. We predict that the effects of the broken symmetry introduced by the ordering of the Néel vector, being very weak in the bulk, are pronounced in the surface electronic dispersion, suggesting that surface probes may be more suited to measure them. The coexistence of the magnetism with many other competing phases make this material interesting and possibly useful for quantum spintronics applications.

Multipartite entanglement in the one-dimensional spin- 1 2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet

Multipartite entanglement refers to the simultaneous entanglement between multiple subsystems of a many-body quantum system. While multipartite entanglement can be difficult to quantify analytically, it is known that it can be witnessed through the quantum Fisher information (QFI), a quantity that can also be related to dynamical Kubo response functions. In this work, we first show that the finite temperature QFI can generally be expressed in terms of a static structure factor of the system, plus a correction that vanishes as T→0. This implies that the static structure factor witnesses multipartite entanglement near quantum critical points at temperatures below a characteristic energy scale of the system. Therefore, in systems with a known static structure factor, we can deduce finite temperature scaling of multipartite entanglement and low temperature entanglement depth without knowledge of the full dynamical response function of the system. This is particularly useful to study 1D quantum critical systems in which sub-power-law divergences can dominate entanglement growth, where the conventional scaling theory of the QFI breaks down. Furthermore, the 1D spin- 1 2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model is an important example of such a system, and we show that multipartite entanglement in the Heisenberg chain diverges nontrivially as ~ln(1/T) 3/2 . We verify these predictions with calculations of the QFI using conformal field theory and matrix product state simulations. Finally, we discuss the implications of our results for experiments to probe entanglement in quantum materials, comparing to neutron scattering data in KCuF 3 , a material well described by the Heisenberg chain.

Increased localization of Majorana modes in antiferromagnetic chains on superconductors

Magnet-superconductor hybrid (MSH) systems are a key platform for custom-designed topological superconductors. Ideally, the ends of a one-dimensional MSH structure will host Majorana zero-modes (MZMs), the fundamental unit of topological quantum computing. However, some experiments with ferromagnetic (FM) chains show a more complicated picture. Due to tiny gap sizes and hence long coherence lengths, MZMs might hybridize and lose their topological protection. Recent experiments on a niobium surface have shown that both FM and antiferromagnetic (AFM) chains may be engineered, with the magnetic order depending on the crystallographic direction of the chain. While FM chains are well understood, AFM chains are less so. Here, we study two models inspired by the niobium surface: A minimal model to elucidate the general topological properties of AFM chains and an extended model to more closely simulate a real system by mimicking the proximity effect. Here, we find that, in general, for AFM chains, the topological gap is larger than for FM ones, and thus, coherence lengths are shorter for AFM chains, yielding more pronounced localization of MZMs in these chains. While for some parameters AFM chains may be topologically trivial, we find in these cases that adding an adjacent chain can result in a nontrivial system, with a single MZM at each chain end.
